@Throes:
IMO this is not a legit reason to allow crap to go on with the new dub. It's like saying, "I don't care if Luffy ate the FUCK YOU FRUIT in the new dub, because at least we don't have to deal with 4kids' anymore." Yeah, the 4kids dub was bad. Yeah, they don't have it anymore. SO FUCKIN' WHAT.
I think that people need to treat the FUNimation dub as if it were the original dub. And no, I'm not advocating that FUNimation use "gomu gomu no" for the attack names, since "gum gum" is a fairly accurate translation, and it matches the flaps, which is one of the most important things in dubs.
Gum Gum and King of the Pirates are the major things right now that I've heard so far that I don't like about the new dub. King of The Pirates seems like a completely awkward and pointless name change and I just dont like Gum Gum (nor do I think Luffy would call his attacks that). It seems like something dub companies would realistically want to use given its the name that sounds the most similar and seems like it could work at first glance, but it just doesn't fit the show or the character to me. Obviously I can tolerate them and enjoy the dub anyway (which is going to be far, far better than 4Kids), but I'll always like the original Japanese One Piece the best for sure. I'm a guy who prefers sub anime the vast majority of the time I watch stuff anyway, so keep that in mind.
Cowboy Bebop is one of the very few times I prefer the dub. If every dub was anywhere near that level of acting, direction, and overall just taking the source material that seriously in general, things would be a different story for me. It wasn't that they got everything 100% accurate to the original, but how incredibly well they where able to adapt the show into English without doing anything stupid (namely the dialog is very good and there are no notable bad voices). It hardly even feels like a dub and more like its a standalone show that was originally in English, which is what every dub should strive to be. Obviously its not perfect, but as a dub its on a level higher than most.
I really hope they don't screw up Luffys voice by the way. I'd consider him easily the hardest character in the show to cast, and a generic annoying goofy little kid voice that isn't capable of being serious or showing emotion is not something I want to see happen again. That would be a far bigger deal than any of this other stuff and could potentially ruin the dub (just like how the Death Note dub is fixing to be ruined because of Lights voice). Usopp might also be hard to cast if the company doesn't understand his character, but as long as Funi sticks strictly to voice actors who do a wide range of tones and emotions for the characters and not just one goofy sounding voice it should be fine.
