The only problem with Goku's sub voice is it sounds too young.
Sean has much more serious problems, namely constipation, cheesyness, overacting, lack of acting.
Know what his role in Berserk was?
Gaston.
Sean is not a Goku, Sean is a Gaston.

In regards to 16 having a synthisized voice, and this somehow being fitting, let us look at the story and see why this was moronic…
Could it be that THE FACT THAT HE WAS FULLY MECHANICAL WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SUPRISE?! It wasn't revealed that he was 100% machine until Cell tried to absorb him. Until then, it was assumed that he was an organic cyborg, like 17 and 18 (a plot point removed from the dub. All references to them once being human were removed, as well. Probably so FUNi could call the Artificial Humans "Androids").
I will say, though, that I do like Falcouner's music, to a point. The Japanese BGM is a tad cheesy (which I can forgive; the show is old as hell, as most people forget), and I like how Falcouner composed theme BGMs for the characters (and I absolutely love the feeling of crisis his "Cell Returns" BGM has. it's almost like Cell's own theme song is freaking out at his revival). The problem is that, in America, there's this goofy rule that cartoon BGM can never, ever, be quiet. There can be NO moment of silence. EVER. Music and/or dialogue must be playing at every second. This amounts to music that won't shut up, and superfluous dialogue where there was originally silence. This annoys the crap outta me. At least the Japanese BGM knew when to shut up and let the wind howl.
Plus, let's face it, Norio Wakamoto is the king of Japanese bad guy VAs. That man MADE Cell. As good as Clarke was, he just can't top Wakamoto's Cell. I could go into it, but I don't wanna rant.
Ah, there's more to say, but, again, I don't wanna rant. If this topic keeps livin', I'll probably throw in a few more points, but Cap'n Carter stole most of my opinions. I will say, though, that the insert song for when Gohan went SS2 was perfect and epic. I absolutely hate Gohan, but that moment kicked fucking ass thanks to that song, and the mood it set.
Yes, since obviously the people who created the original didn't know what they were doing as they created it with that music in mind.
FYI, there's no 'music' let alone 'rock' in the dub. It's a guy with a synthesizer making beeps and bleeps that sound stripped from a Mega Man game from 1994.
While I agree with the general point, I have to say that the NES Megaman games actually had good music.
I'm always back and forth. Some of the Japanese voices bother me, but so many of the dub voices bother me. Same with the music, the dub should've always had the Japanese music. I'm still undecided, but the original has a slight advantage. I would like to buy the new box set, hearing the dub voices over the Japanese soundtrack should be great, but the some of the FUNI voices are a little whack. The Ocean voices were godly. Too bad the dub wasn't.
I grew up with the dub, but after watching the Japanese version, my stomach turns when I try to return to the dub. The music, voices and script of the Japanese version just…pwn the dub.
Sadly, the Ocean Group's continuation is horrible. I've seen clips, and man… Scott McNiel, whoever does Krillin (I forget), and Brian Drummond are the ONLY people on there who can act worth a damn. Cell was horrible, #17 was flat, and Goten was god awful. Urgh... Plus, the dub is just as bad and hacked up as the first US dub we can remember. 'Member them parachutes?!
Everyone remembers the parachutes line, it is a classic. But we shouldn't forget that the original edited dub also completely made shit up about Goku's father, i guess they never anticipated making it all the way to the point where goku's lineage was explained
Don't forget the one thing that we all owe the Ocean dub for…..
being "OVER NINE-THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAND!"
Seriously though, what's up with the 9000 thing, i've seen the video, it doesn't seem particularly amusing to me. It's a pretty good line, and Drummond delivers it well (and it makes me feel really old to say this) but I just don't get the phenomenon that has risen out of this clip.
It could just be the fact that I had to watch the first two fucking seasons at least 3 or 4 times when they aired on toonami before Funi started making season 3.
It's become a meme because of how Drummond goes over the top with it, and how easy it is to say things are OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!

The new redub of the Saiyan/Namek arcs don't keep the original soundtrack either. It's a completely new one, but it's quite good in my opinion.
Meh, I guess i'll just settle for "not getting it".

Are there any clips available?
There's some floating around YouTube here and there. You can find 'em pretty easy with a search. Ones that come to mind are Vegeta's Final Flash against Cell, Piccolo vs. #18, and Vegeta preparing to sacrifice himself (and robo-Goten trying to sound emotional…).
I like the subs better than the dub.
I prefer the subbed dragonball. I like to hear the japanese voices.
Wow, I was never aware that Ocean dubbed DBZ in its entirety, but I feel shocked that FUNImation has superior voices for many characters. However, I've always liked Vegeta's, Piccolo's, Nappa's, Krillin's, Tenshinhan's, Radditz's, and Yajirobe's Ocean Dub voices.
^
where did you see clips?
Just search "Dragonball Z Ocean Dub" on YouTube. You'll find many clips.
The Voices in the Engish version were OK at times, but I just can't get over the Script Changes and the Music… I mean, whatever the hell that is playing when Piccolo runs out to Save Gohan From Nappa was god aweful in the Dub, but it was a nice piece of Classical music in the Sub. Changing it was like Chaning From the New World Movement IV to some Synthesized piece of Shit for the Gomu Gomu No Storm. It just Ruined it
and Seriously, why Does Vegeta say things like "GREAT GALAXIES KAKAROTT!!"...
Sean is not a Goku, Sean is a Gaston.
He's also Amidamaru, which surprised me, since Carter was talking about Sean's range and I had no fudging idea he did that role for 4Kids. Sure, I knew he was active in New York but Amidamaru, god. Awesome.
=English, but wow. The bgm for that is so amazing, while the americans disapoints greatly.
Though Cell's VA in america kicks A LOT of ass. It almost balances it out. I love the japanese one too, but the american one is just amazing.
Yeah that was horrible, and when I mean horrible I mean god awful horrible.
'what was the bgm around 2:40…the music really brings out the tension of the scene
The only Funimation voices I really liked in the Dragonball Z dub were Sonny Strait and Daemon Clark. Chris Sabat was only good in Fullmetal Achemist.
Norio Wakamoto was a great Cell. Didn't he voice Kagato in Tenchi Muyo?
For Ocean they had the best explanation why no one was killed "Thank god it's Sunday or those building would have been full!!!!"
Damn man I was watching Vegeta's final flash clip in the ocean video and damn Drummond can't power up worth shit.

Wait, what? Final Flash wasn't in the Ocean Studios dub of DBZ.
I'm pretty sure that after FUNi had secured the rights on DBZ in America, ocean continued dubbing and their dubs were subsequently aired in Canada. At least that's what I gathered.
Kuririn is amazing in this scene though.
and time for DBZ funi vs ocean comparison
I like Ocean's voice for vegeta because he sounds more calm at times, but I like the way sabbat sounds so arrgont (sp) like vegeta acts. And Ocean's voice for cell is ugh.
edit: Watching all 3 dubs of Gohan turning SSJ 2, I really like how Funimation and Ocean (more so funimation because it sounds cooler) had cell say
"And there's another fighter…you could have saved."
Insted of "Nobody asked you, you factory defect"
Does anyone know a YT account that has uploaded the subbed eps od Dragonball? And by that I mean post Z, dragonball with chibi son goku and stuff.
Kuririn is amazing in this scene though.
H-h-holy shacks_!!_ I cannot believe this! o_O;
…
Haha, oh wow. One of the traits of the original Ocean Studios DBZ dub I liked a lot was how the episodes had a lot of energy and the voice actors gave performances that were befitting of that action; it's just awkward watching the Ocean dub with all the "detatched" DBZ movement, if one knows what I mean.
16 sucks, Clarke gave a superior Cell, Vegeta doesn't sound right anymore with his bulky body; when he was a slightly toned shrimp it was more befitting. Trunks is also inferior.
I see Ocean Studios added some stock sound effects. A good choice in my opinion, since all of Japan's effects date back from the '70s apparently.

Clarke's performance is a bit weak at first, but given all the FUNimation VA's were like that I suppose it's forgivable. I don't like Cell's Canadian voice at all, but Krillin is just as awesome as ever (not that his American voice was too terrible). Oh god, it's hard to admit this (?) but FUNimation's in-house music is far superior.
Drummond is great as always, but as I said earlier not befitting of Vegeta's later angular body.

Since when was being a kid = chibi? XD

Oddly enough, he also did the voice of Wapol in the 4Kids dub of One Piece. The man certainly has a range of sorts, it's just that he can't act for crap. I like his conversational Goku, but when he gets all battle-ready he sounds really dumb.
Yeah, I forget what I said about his range but I was probably mistaken. He DOES have a pretty decent overall range; it just doesn't really work when it comes to Goku. His Goku always sounded really flat to me.
I also hate when I'm watching something and I can instantly recognize his voice. It happens a lot with Eric Stuart a lot too (the "Brock syndrome").
@Cap'n:
Y

Aye, but it seems that kind of recognition is becoming a lot more popular since actors get fanbases. The best folk usually remain practically anonymous, like half the cast in Bleach and specifically Dave Wittenberg, who only became semi-famous as Kakashi.
Funny thing about Eric Stuart, although he's almost always recognized now, most people didn't know he was both Kaiba and Brock. I know I myself didn't know about that until about a year after YGO was airing, and one of my friends who has followed the series since 2001 and is a big fan didn't even know until January of this year.
It's mostly an exposure thing, I guess. I myself never even knew a guy like "Crispin Freeman" existed until his goons lobbied almost every place I went with shameless promotion of him.

I never liked that line in the dub, myself, particularly because the rewritten dialogue had that problem of cramming things down your throat. Yes, we get it, Cell is trying to goad Gohan, you don't have to change every 3 lines to add more taunts, the Cell Jr.s mercilessly beating his friends makes that crystal clear, thanks. I like how Cell originally tells 16 "you're not motivating him with your speech, we're doing this my way" (paraphrasing), stomps his head, and insults him after he kills him. Shows how much of a bastard Cell is, and belittiling 16 like that after his big nice-nice speech worked well.
And that superfulous dialogue in place of Unmei no Hi is just lame. That song made that moment so awesome. Basic "I'll defeat you you evil man" "ohmigawd Gohan" crap just doesn't compare…
Oh, and Ocean's redone sound effects are BEYOND corny. And why do the Cell Jr.s sound like friggin' midgets?!

Pretty much anything Dragonball is taken off youtube rather quickly, and there's hardly anything japanese on the site in the first place. The only way to get japanese Dragonball with subs would propably be the FUNI DVDs. (And those are actually very good, with an average of between 10 to 20 episodes per set, and no missing content except animation changes for the openings and endings, and the next episode-previews.)
On-topic: I prefer the japanese version. All the dubs have too inaccurate scripts, the Z-music is bad, the GT-music is AWFUL, and there aren't many good VAs in there either. The japanese one has great voices AND music, so it's much better for me.
Actually, that's not entirely true about the subs. There are fansubs floating around on the internet for the entire series, I posted a link for them on the first or second page of this discussion (depending how many responses per page you use).
They aren't of particularly good quality, and they are missing openings, endings, and recaps, but they are free, and good enough to give a test run to see if the series is actually worth purchasing, that's what i did.
You mean the AHQ ones? I've always wanted to download some of their DBZ fansubs (in particular the uncut episodes of the Saiyan saga that are only available with the screen cropped in that recent remastered set).
But the AHQ torrents never work for me. I left the torrent up for weeks and never got a single KB done. Wish I could find them on direct download or IRC or something.
Try the torrents i posted on the first page, i downloaded the entire series from those torrents last year, but i cherrypicked a few episodes of those torrents recently because i deleted about half the series, they should be active, if not just a little slow.
Yeah, those are the ones I already tried. I don't get why they don't work for me though. I use torrents all the time and this usually doesn't happen.
I tried them with my apartment internet connection and my home internet connection, but I couldn't even get a single KB of an episode to download.
I'm gonna go against the majority notion of "OMGZ Gokuz soundz like a girlz" & say that I like Nozawa's performance as Son Goku for the entirety of Dragon Ball (including Z). While in the DBZ anime, she may pass off as a little too high-pitched at times, I still felt she was able to pull off the character. For me Goku is the embodiment of an innocent & naive character that was born on the other side of the mountains, something that Nozawa can easily replicate. For some reason, alot of that was lost in the various incantations of it's Dub counterparts. While I didn't particularly mind the performances, alot of the script writing is infected with out of character moments. That being said, I prefer the subs.
Regarding the music, Dragon Ball (& Z) is generally a vintage show aimed for children/youth demographic while still appealing to those of all ages (similar to One Piece), so it's understandable that it has orchestrated music that has a fine line between Scooby Doo & Star Wars. The same can be said for One Piece, just not as much.
I actually like both of them.
They each give you a different feeling. I like the Subbed Version because of the great music and the great VA's, while I like the Dub for its take on the show. I grew up with the dub, so I generally gravitate towards it. Though, don't get the impression that I never change the Language on my DVD's every now and then.

Yeah, this post pretty much sums up my beliefs.
Funny thing is, even with watching the dub first, when I started watching subs, I never once objected to Goku's voice. However, giving Bardock and Turles the same voice diminished their characters.

On Tullece's sake, he's pretty much a what-if Goku was evil kinda character. So it makes sense, that he would have the same seiyuu naturally. I agree Bardock should've had a different seiyuu, if not for the sake of consistency. It really doesn't make sense when most of the Son family is voiced by Nozawa, yet Raditz is voiced by Shigeru Chiba.
