Speaking of wishful thinking, I'd also like to see Sanji take down a main villian fo once. He's tough enough to handle it I htink, under the right motivation. Frankly, I think that Sanji usually fights people that are weaker then him from the start, and unlike Zoro and Luffy, he never pushes himself to his max and wins–like at Baratie his stamina gave out.

Sanji: Sanji's main job isn't fighting and his dream is not to be the best martial artist in OP world, so there's no real need to develop him the way Luffy and Zoro are developed.

Yeah…I guess "again" would fit. Many have forgotten those. I think it's more like "consistantly do badass stuff."

Terek and Aldrich's arguments regarding Usopp has nothing to do with Usopp just pwning someone. We all expect that it should happen sometime in the end.

We're just pissed because of the whole water7 fiasco. Usopp had strong character development there. In the EL part, he just, kinda….ran around in circles. Sure he helped to save Robin, but we just felt that it wasn't enough to top the intensity of the Usopp/Luffy altercation.

Right now, we're just waiting for the resolution to Luffy/Usopp's argument at the start of the arc. If Oda handles it haphazardly, or tries to "cheat" his way by making Usopp rejoin the crew in a hilarious manner, even Cosmic Debris said that she'd have to agree with me that it'd be a let-down considering the Usopp/Luffy argument had so much potential to develop Usopp as a character.

Me too! After Mihawk it's difficult because he can't lose, but a new uncertainty of some kind would be refreshing. Development outside of fighting would be nice, too.

I agree with this. Maybe it's me, but since Alabasta ended Zoro has becoming kinda bland, mostly sleeping or getting lost. Yeah, he got a couple of new techniques but that's it. At least an unusual situation like Sanji had when fought Calipha wouldn't hurt.

I have to admit, it is a shounen tradition mainly used but Usopp may not battle a main villian to be honest. MAIN villians always go to Luffy or Zoro's job.

Now he is becoming dead weight, as I knew most characters would become during the series. But, Sanji was absolutely useless in the series until he got his ass on Water 7. Now he became the Zoro of old….but those two are interchangeable at root story purpose.

Oda blows his character story load on the arc where they join most often. I think Robin was the only character since Nami that had something far more complex behind the scenes, and Nami was blowing it soon after she got into the series.

Who needs crotch imagery when we have naked Franky? XD

It's true that after each character's intro arc, they tend to stagnate. Oda creates situations that shake things up a bit, but he doesn't like to change them permenantly.

To add to this, i'm probably one of the few that isn't a big Franky fan, i think he'll become annoying quickly if his antics persist with the consistency we've seen so far in W7 and EL, but that's just me.

I also think most people forget how long the series has been running. everyone wants their characters fulled developed yesterday, but i think Oda is still going for the gradual steppings. If he didn't do this, and you think the characters have become bland now, imagine Sanji being able to fight a female w/o a second thought, or Zoro finding his way out of a maze by instinct, or Usopp not doing "Usopp Noise" in a serious fight. The characters are what they are, and i think Oda is trying to preserve that while giving them growth and a bit more depth.

Anyways, i'll be honest. i'm pretty bored w/ the crew. I'm way more interested in the side stories at the moment. Like, who are the other shichibukai, who are the other yonkou, who is the other admiral, will we ever see Ace vs BB, etc???

That's exactly how I feel. I wouldn't say that's the only reason I read OP, but it's not far. The world, side characters and antagonists are all far more interesting than the main cast.

You know, I agree with the fact that the Mugiwara have gotten stale. Except for Robin, who I can't comment on because she's WAY too much like me (Formerly quiet and reserved, now becoming more outgoing, very intelligent, analytical), the old characters have seemed rather bland lately. Even Usopp and Chopper, who always astounded me with their antics, seem rather boring (God, I laughed so hard at the "Ita. Ita. Ita!!!" Pun, and the "Shutup" Face.") Franky is fresh and he's funny. I dunno if I can tolerate the "Supaaaaa!" Pose every few minutes, but other than that, he's a fighter that's a cyborg and can upgrade infinitely, he's a grown man who's still eccentric, he's powered by cola (which can be upgraded; can you imagine hyper-carbonation?).

Plus, it'll be great to see the "Mentos and Cola" gag happen with Franky at some point.

Most of the Mugiwaras are getting bland, that I admit, but when it came to Robin in Enies Lobby, that was something VERY new as well as that "thing" with Franky. Franky may be one of the most amusing and unpredictable anticed Mugiwara to join so far.

I dunno what you guys are thinking but Robin is the one Straw Hat who I think is boring as hell.

She has a nice backstory and got some good development this arc, but personality wise she's pretty much the most boring.

Well, those are the fundamental characteristics of the characters, but at least to me it feels like they HAVE evolved somewhat since the start of the series. At least I don't think they are as one-dimensional as you describe.

Sanji has alot of empathy for Usopp, although he's certainly not desireable from a love-cook point of view. Robin has warmed up quite a bit to the rest of the crew. And Zoro, while he is always appearing outwardly emotionless for all serious situations has shown that he is concerned for the fates of him crewmembers, like when Ohm had injured Chopper and when Robin appeared to have left the crew. Nami isn't being totally greedy all the time either, as she has shown that she's willing to make personal risks for her friends without making a profit from it. Chopper is still growing up and learning that warrior/pirate-code stuff from Luffy, Sanji and Zoro. Usopp has left the crew, which is at least a change if nothing else. Luffy is Luffy.

But I agree that One Piece's main appeal now lies in the story of the world itself, not on the mugiwara cast of characters. Which is a good thing, in my opinion.

Me too. I read OP because the mythology is great. The story regarding the blank history, the story of Roger and the "older fogeys" who've existed before the Age of Piracy, the story of why and how the WG came into power and what the OP is and the phoneglyphs intrigue me more than me wanting to see the characters kick ass.

It's funny how views differ. I'm the exact opposite. I don't think the world is really all that spectacularly designed, and the plot is outright glacial, but I think the characterization is heads above most shounen series. It's just that the traits beyond the immediate obvious points are more subtle. Oda doesn't have them scream "Look! Now something has happened and here is how I feel and here, my personality will change suddenly!" to keep readers' attention.

It's also funny how many readers like OP but for totally different reasons.

I haven't gotten to the point where I am tired of the main cast. Maybe certain individuals, but most of them still interest and entertain me. I'm still more interested in the characters then the side stuff myself, even if they aren't going through any earthshaking changes. They're all lovable characters. That's what drew me into the story in the first place. Unlike a different shounen story in which the main characters really do bore me right from the start and the side characters are the ones I'm more interested in.

Well, after nearly 450 chapters, it's nigh impossible not to get a little bored with the main characters. They may be getting a little bland, but I still find them perfectly likeable and everything.

I guess I am more interested in the One Piece world itself than the character interaction. With all the factions and conflicts and unknowns I just find it intriguing.

Naruto is OK. I just find him annoying most of the time, except for when he gets serious. But eventually that becomes predictable. I haven't even made it to the much poo-poo'd 2 year time skip yet.

Haha…. they would ignore each other for the majority of the series and occasionally try to kill each other when forced to work together. You have to throw someone else in the mix to balance them out. One Piece characters are the most fun when all the different personality quirks mesh together.

As it's been said, it should be expected that with a series this long that we'll all start to feel a little bit of staleness here and there. I'm surprised I don't feel that more. Most anime/manga series start to bore me after a couple of seasons. My attention span is short.

I like all of it, the main cast is awesome when compared with other shonen.

That's why it's also really good, it's surrounded by lots of crap things making it look better.

And that works for me and I don't question that, I want to keep loving One Piece.

I'm pretty much like you, I guess. I just enjoy what Oda does with his characters, the way everything plays out, but I'm not a big fan of his universe or the overall plot. I'm not saying Oda has done a bad job with the plot though. The story is entertaining. Heck, I wouldn't be an active member of these forums if I didn't fully enjoy what One Piece has to offer and I would had stopped reading it years ago (and I would had looked for better things to like instead).

Well, I see TWO things that can POSSIBLY (but maybe unlikely) happen.
1. They realize that Ussop is gone, but he's actually found a way to be a stowaway on their new ship, and he comes out and suprises them.

2. Ussop is left on Water 7 and sets off on his own little adventure (maybe a mini-arc on the cover) and come back stronger, and by stronger, i mean just better tricks up his sleeve, like a banana peel trick or something

I think that's what some people want.

As for how he could get stronger in Elbaf, I have no idea myself. I was wondering if Coby has anything to do with how some people come out with this idea. When Coby was introduced, he was worse than Usopp. After joining the marine for less than a year, he becomes badass. They could be thinking, if it works for Coby, why not Usopp? And nope, I don't quite agree with this theory myself.

I woudn't call it power up. Simply-One Piece gets two or three arcs without him while enduring brutal training in Warrior Village like Koby and Hel was with Garp.

Well, that's what works for the rest of them. Of course, that includes:

-going through extreme circumstances. The next guy that hit's Usopp with a 2-ton bat, stabs him 5 times, and throws him down a 1 story build is going to be surprised… hahaha, I'd like to see that.

With that said, the "rock club thug," from the Kuro arc wouldn't stand a chance against Usopp now. Sanji probably couldn't beat Jyabura without being pushed to the edge by Gin or Mr. 2. Mr.1 brought Zoro to a new level.

-Rivalry? This is out of nowhere, but I think it's Sanji's reason for improvement.

-Training inbetween on the ship. Zoro's method, or maybe for the rest of the crew.

-Fighting to your nakama! (...god what a dorky phrase.) Anyway, this is Luffy's reason--he made gear 2 for this. In fact, this is a big motivator for Usopp to, as seen in Alabasta. If Jyabura had threathened one of Usopp's nakama more directly, Usopp would have litteraly gone SSJ and blown up all of Enies Lobby and Namek too. Of course, all the SHs could do that, even Nami.

However, as for his rejoining, I'm kind of hoping that Luffy doesn't make it easy. I'd love a chapter that ends with Luffy answering Usopp's request to join with an intense, "NO!"

Then, Luffy makes Usopp do something to join. I imagine this:

Luffy: Our crew is going to the New World soon! If you want to live with us, you'll have to endure challenges a lot bigger then before! Can you handle it?

Usopp cletches his fist in anger

Usopp: YES!!

...something like that. Oda's at least good at climaxes and conclusions, such as Sanji after losing to Calipha. That's the last sting of hope, Usopp's conclusion.

No that's not right he needs to do something heroic like saving the whole crew, making luffy want him back. after that Usopp needs to be a man and apologise then he can rejoin
