Nice chapter, I'm looking forward to seeing the ship from the deck and the inside, I bet it's really luxurious but still in a humple way to it fits the Strawhat's attitude. It has just been one awesome chapter after the other, ever since Luffy used gear 3 for the first time.
Chapter 436 "Pants from Franky★House" Discussion
-
-
Hey! Being "pants"-ed by your own family? Being shot out of a cannon? Being blackmailed into running naked through a crowded street in an attempt get your underwear back? … this isn't "convincing a reluctant crew member to join", this is hazing!
Last I checked, the name on the door was "Franky House", not "Frat House"!
Poor guy! Good thing he's so outrageous already, or he'd be crushed by the humiliation of it all.
I like the theories that Onigumo and 4ghost bring up, except that I expect Usopp to be in the disguise of Soge, since Soge is the one with the bounty, not Usopp. Franky could use that as a way to buy some more time for Usopp's and Luffy's inevitable (I hope!) reconciliation as well as Usopp's rejoining.
Just like Mearl Dox was – I was very happy to see Nami and Icebreg talking about the ease of navigating this new ship. I also like how it's implied, though not outwardly stated, that Iceberg seems to have as much faith in Nami's navigating abilities as Nami does. Nice! Since this, not fighting, is Nami's true talent, I hope we get to see a lot more of it in the future. Especially because we've had so many strong hints about the unpredictibility of the waters ahead.
SteveR -- we don't know what this ship is capable of yet, so it's probably to early to complain of "the same old shit" simply because you don't like the outward appearance of the ship. Since it's Franky's creation, it's almost guaranteed to be as wacky and unpredictable as Franky's own body modifications! ...
(There's a scene in the movie "Yellow Submarie" where the Beatles, just after boarding the submarine, run around the interior gleefully pushing buttons and pulling levers. It's one of my favorite scenes in the whole film, and I look forward to a similar moment on board this new ship where Luffy, Choppy, and Usopp press all the buttons and pull all the levers on the ship, much to Franky's delight, as well as concern.
Love the lawn! It's a natural home for BelleMere's trees; a convenient place for Robin to garden ; somewhere for Choppy to graze ; a spot for Usopp and and Luffy to frolic ; a place for Sanji to relax with a drink and a smoke ; and a much more comfortable spot for Zoro to sleep.
[a big "thanks!" to everyone who made this week's translation, scanlation, etc possible]
-
How the fuck can you garden like that? Is there any soil?
-
Is there any soil
It would seem so.
You'd be surprised how little soil it takes to keep a plant alive. I have a patio full of tiny potted plants, and as long as you feed and water them regularly, they need very little soil. And coincidentally, fish parts make excellent food for plants, so there will be no shortage of those in the Grand Line! -
Is the deck made of concrete? A wooden deck growing grass would present problems down the road, seeing as the root structure of the grass would tend to compromise the structure as a whole. Ah well, it's a manga after all. I'll stop 'overanalysing' and enjoy the ride.
By the way, looking through the translation I see that the ship is a brigantine, yet the katakana clearly state that it's a sloop. Are these just different names for the same type of ship?
-

Water rot/damage would be the biggest concern with a wooden deck, but root damage would be the second biggest concern – so if the deck is indeed wood, then it would need to be replaced every 8 months or so. (That's about as often as I have to replace the wooden planters on my patio).
Hey, that's a repair that Franky could do to pass the time and earn his keep if the ship is indeed "invincible" otherwise.
-
Oh in case you still don't know what the symbol is that I'm talking about it's:
! a bowl of soup
Actually it's the dingbat for hot springs. hot springs:

Well if the deck below the lawn is also from the Adam wood then it might not be as big of a concern. Adam wood could have superior antirotting properities compared to "normal wood".
-
My favorite part in this chapter was actually the navy officer's "You forgot to take the lens cap off?" He just looks so diabolical when he says it.
-
Hah!
I can't believe it! Flaming Attachan!!! And he f'd up poor Sanji's moment of glory…
Ship is cool; Luffy having the Lion is fitting. I like the design on the crow's nest and helm. Those big iron running lights on the helm room are pretty cool too. Not to mention the sweet garden and aquarium. Also seems to be some masive cannon or jet thing on the back. I wonder if that is anything, or just part of the design...
And damn, what an unusual way for Luffy to get Franky to join. Ransom. Thank god for a well placed baseball. It looks like the kid on the side saved us the horror of the mechadong.
Man you gotta love Oda. Several chapters since Lucchi's defeat, and he keeps giving us interesting arc ending chapter's over-and over. Merry, Garp and Kobi, Shanks and Whitebeard, and finaly now the finale and it's still nothing you could predict.
-
Also got a question. On the same page we see Robin smiling when the crew is discussing the bounties. Why is Robin directing her smile towards Nami? I can't seem to think of a reasonable answer yet.
Oh that's because Robin has a crush on Nami . Is that what you want to hear?
Anyway back to the serious stuffs. I am glad that Luffy did not let Usopp get in his way of making decisions about the new crewmember. A true captain indeed, not pandering to any (ex-)crew member.
I think the ship is fine as well. It is very mugiwara and original in design. I won't want it to look like Shank's or Whitbeard's ship.

Please don't post usless stuff guys.
I have a feeling Usopp's return is going to be uneventive. He'll show up ready to make his big speech, and Luffy will be like "What the hell are you doing? Get on the ship."
That's what I fear…it would be lame. How can Usopp just jump on like nothing happened? I have to say though, that I thought Zoro's comment at the beginning was kind of odd...
(There's a scene in the movie "Yellow Submarime" where the Beatles, just after boarding the submarine, run around the interior gleefully pushing buttons and pulling levers. "So this is a submarine…"
"Soft isn't it?"
"Not if you're on the bottom."I love the Yellow Submarine. ^^ Sometimes One Piece reminds me of it.
BTW, it's been my hope for a long time that this new ship would work well in Usopp's gunning favor. Like lots of cool cannons.
@Private:
How the fuck can you garden like that? Is there any soil?
How do you think Nami took care of her tangerine trees all that time?
-
have to say though, that I thought Zoro's comment at the beginning was kind of odd…
Yeah, it just comes right out of nowhere with no context and then seems to be dropped so quickly after. I'm wondering if it's like that in the manga, or just in the translation. Has Stephen put up a translation for this chapter yet? I'll hold off any judgement about what Zoro is trying to say until I read Stephen's version of it.
I love the Yellow Submarine. ^^ Sometimes One Piece reminds me of it.
Agreed! (on both points). When the Mugiwara first entered the Calm Belt and found themselves on top of the nose of a Sea King, I found myself humming the theme song from "Yellow Submarine." I adore that film! It's so silly, yet has such incredible artwork. And full of puns. It seems like the sort of thing that Oda would love, too, so it's no stretch to imagine him being inspired by it, too.
"let's get this sub ship-shape!"
"but I like it submarine-shape instead …""Don't touch that lever!"
"I can't help it, I'm a born lever-puller!"Yikes, I'll be here all night if I start quoting it! :)
-
i really can't wait for the next arc now. i can't wait to see them meet a new enemy so we can see the four big guns in action. i also wonder who's gonna be the look out? will they need to recruit for that?
-
What a great dramatic way to recruit Franky! The new merry we've waited for so long is here! New story arc starting really soon! Oh happy day~~
-
Since Franky calls his invention the Soldier Dock System the best part of the ship I'm going to guess that it is significant to his own desire for the ship. Since Franky was traumatized by Spandam using his own ships against the people he loved, I'm thinking that the Soldier Dock System somehow protects the ship from unauthorized access. A system that will not aloow history to repeat itself in any way.
To Franky that would be perfect a ship that you can lock up and leave at dock and it will protect itself as if it were its own soldier. Who knows those masts might be able to telescope down into the ship and then something else closes off the deck.
-
Well, it looks like pretty much the whole damn town is there to witness Franky's answer. I'm sure there's a reason for this. Also, what is this "self-imposed duty" that keeps Franky at W7 Iceburg speaks of? Up until now, we've been given no hints of this sense of duty Franky feels towards W7 whatsoever. Is Oda planning to do a complete 180 on Franky's characterisation thus far? Here's hoping chapter 437 provides adequate answers to these questions.
-
the new ship is indeed a brig (or brigantine) and not a sloop. a sloop have only 1 mast, not squarred sails etc… for further detail, look at this page I found : http://www.flyinglab.com/pirates/shipguide/Frames.htm
-
That chapter was awesome. Thie new ship looks brilliant, and it's good we finally got a picture of Flaming Attachan (the guy that takes the bounty pictures for the Marines.)
-
That was a funny chapter, you gotta wonder why Franky didn't just turn around, walk into his house and get a new pair before chasing them XD. The new ship is awesome, the swing is dangerously close to the wall though.
-
I think there is a major conflict of terms about whether Franky invented the "Solar Dry Dock System" (AP Translation) or the "Soldier Dry Dock System" (the guys over at OP Manga V.2). Which is it?

Personally, I'm waiting for Stephen's translation of the chapter to clarify things.

@psycho wolvesbane:

In katakana, the name Franky uses is spelled 「ソルジャードックシステム」and it's the word ソルジャー (sorujyaa) that seems to be in doubt. However, since ソルジャー is a valid katakana spelling for soldier, I'm voting for "Soldier Dock System."

As others already have stated having grass on the deck is a bad idea.
1. Rot and roots destroy the wooden deck.
2. Salt water is bad for most grasses.
3. Having so little soil is generally bad for keeping themoisture which is necessary to keep nice grass.
4. You don't want to use any drinking water for watering the grass which would be need because of the thin soil.
5. The deck is a working area and the grass will become down trodden.I dislike the idea of having grass on the ship but it is no major issue since Oda has never aimed for realism.
Like the chapter and like most of the new ship, but I will probably get used to the things which I am currently doubtful of. Other than some initial scepticism of the new ship this chapter was awsome.
-
So what are they going to name the new ship? It's not complete until the ship has a name.
edit: Hey, what if this is Oda's dream ship? This might give us an insight to what Oda considers to be a ship that is enjoyable.

This ship is made out of super wood though ;p
The Grandline seems to get plenty of rain to water the deck too.
-
Thank you, Meujeudom. That clarified alot of things, especially the line "Many were classified as 'sloops', being put under the command of junior officers such as Master-and-Commander." How a brigantine can be called a sloop still puzzles me, but much of the nautical jargon was contradictory in nature. I'll chalk it up to having too many cool ship designs and not enough cool-sounding names to go around.
-
Maybe it's turf.

I don´t see anything wrong with the lawn concept. Each family wants to have the perfect home where all members desires can be satisfied. And mostly this involves a lawn respectively a garden too.
The Strawhats are also a family. Not by blood relation but still a family. And they´ve just found a new home, a dream home. But since the Strawhats are pirates they don´t live on dry land but out at sea. So of course their dream home is not a house on land but a ship that sails. But does that mean that a ship as a home can´t have the same comfort a house as a home can´t have? I don´t why it should be like that, especially in such a story like One Piece.
Furthermore the concept of adding features to your ship to make it more home like isn´t something that never happened before. The most prominent example would probably be the holo decks in Star Trek. True this is a starship in outer space but the concept is the same. Instead of ship=home we have spaceship=home. Instead of located on the sea we have located in outer space. And of course the holo deck technology is far more advanced then simply a lawn but it is something that is there to make the crew forget for one second that they are surrounded by cold metal in cold space. It makes them feel at home.
Another series I can think of at the top of my head that used the same concept is the 80´s cartoon Ulysses 31 where the spaceship also had a huge garden on the higher levels.
It all can get nailed down quite easily: Home is where you live. And if you leave on the move then you have to take your home with you, with everything that makes a perfect home.
-
Yeah it is Soldier Dock System, if it were solar it'd be spelled with a ラ instead of a ル, maybe ソラー? ソーラー? Something like that.
-
You could always just line the bottom of the lawn soil and stuff with platic or something to keep water from contacting the ship's wood, as you would in typical landscaping.
-
The new ship is awesome…but I'm a lil disturbed by the "lion"..it looks like a bear with a flower around its neck.
Franky naked is really something new here in One Piece...wonder where oda got the idea of a pants-less franky runnin around water seven :D hilarious!
and sanji..well, I hope he'll be alright (but I think he won't)
lastly...all we need is Ussop and then they sail on..end of water seven-enneis lobby arc T^T
-
Each family wants to have the perfect home where all members desires can be satisfied. And mostly this involves a lawn respectively a garden too.
It's a weird AND stupid idea because:
1. This is a manga about pirates on the high seas, not some god dang nuclear family in a suburban home floating on the water.
2. Grass is a liability.
3. There's no utility from it since Luffy rides on the figurehead and Zoro leans against something.a dream home.
It's a blasted boat.
But since the Strawhats are pirates they don´t live on dry land but out at sea. So of course their dream home is not a house on land but a ship that sails.
It's not a dream home. It's a "home away from home"; the Straw Hats have their houses, but since they can't use 'em they're using an inferior, not SUPERIOR, substitute.
But does that mean that a ship as a home can´t have the same comfort a house as a home can´t have? I don´t why it should be like that, especially in such a story like One Piece.
First of all, where did this grass come from? There's been barely any grass in the series, and most of it was at Cocoyashi or Syrup village. There's none in Water 7, so pulling grass out of Oda's arse is just dumb.
No, it's not a dumb idea. I just finished talking with Carter about the implications of the word "gay", but it fits really well in this instance (culture-wise). Grass is the gayest part of One Piece since Mr.2. No, it's gayer than Mr.2.
Furthermore the concept of adding features to your ship to make it more home like isn´t something that never happened before.
Maybe because it wasn't supposed to happen?
The most prominent example would probably be the holo decks in Star Trek. True this is a starship in outer space but the concept is the same. Instead of ship=home we have spaceship=home. Instead of located on the sea we have located in outer space. And of course the holo deck technology is far more advanced then simply a lawn but it is something that is there to make the crew forget for one second that they are surrounded by cold metal in cold space. It makes them feel at home.
You're going to need to expand on this holodeck issue, since I've got no idea what you're talking about.
Another series I can think of at the top of my head that used the same concept is the 80´s cartoon Ulysses 31 where the spaceship also had a huge garden on the higher levels.
Necessary for breathing on a spaceship (utility). It's just bizarre on a pirate ship (aesthetics).
It all can get nailed down quite easily: Home is where you live. And if you leave on the move then you have to take your home with you, with everything that makes a perfect home.
Once again, its not a home. It's a god dang boat.
…
In closing, I should say Oda has no taste for aesthetics, as evident by Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Robin, and Ussop's clothes. Putting grass on the ship was a silly idea and I hope he gets rid of it soon.
-
My script for Chapter 436 is up here.
Before you read the script, please enjoy this new piece of the Stephen One Piece experience, which every week, will be a panel from the chapter with my own suggested dialogue artfully placed inside.

Once again, its not a home. It's a god dang boat.
What are you smoking?

Seriously, if you live on a boat, the boat is your home. The Mugiwara are a family, and the boat is their home. All of the crew members have homes back on their respective islands, but chances are they won't see those homes for quite a while, so the ship is their home away from home.
Thanks a lot for the translation Stephen, and I love the new weekly feature. XD

I agree with you, I'd just like to say that their ship is their primary home. They are pirates for life.
-
Ehh, sorry. Substitute "house" for home in that second bit.
But grass =/= home.
I agree with you, I'd just like to say that their ship is their primary home. They are pirates for life.
You know a square is a polygon, right?
-
@malintex_terek
so perfectionist..
if you dont want oda's manga then dont read it…
so what if mugiwaras call their ship as home?do we care even if you call yourself "goddess"?
-
i don´t get what´s so wrong with a lawn, but everyone has his own opinion about this kinds of things
-
lawn is good
very relaxing
good for stress
much better than arguing over internet 24/7 over nothing at all, stuff like lawns -
I'm still trying to figure out when a lawn become important to the storyline. WTF indeed
-
^lol, you´re right,so we don´t need to argue about smthing so insignificant^^
-
Anyway~ I never wanted franky to join, Now he is WHY!? I just hope he starts wearing pants.
-
^
i didn´t liked Franky at first either,but i think we´ll get used to him…
and about the part with the pants,i agree with you ;) -

But for the characters' clothing... and I think it's perfect for them :D.

And One Piece is, in truth, a very silly series. I mean… Look at the ships themselves (Merry and Beast King)... They're both silly looking.
I don't see how having grass in it is anymore silly, than an already silly-looking boat in a very silly at-times series like One Piece.
