Eiichiro Oda Comment for "ONE PIECE Game Award" contest.
https://game-creators.camp/contests/onepiece_game
https://i.imgur.com/pQg62yp.jpgI didn't imagine they would do such a great initiative, I was already thinking about how to organize myself while reading rules, but then I saw it's limited only to Japan residents
-
I don't envy the judges having to go through approximately one billion identical MMORPG open world that recreates the whole planet pitches that you wouldn't even be able to explore at your own pace anyway because as soon as you hit the Grand Line your log pose funnels you down a linear string of stages until you get valuable and highly limited tools like eternal poses and vivre cards. It wouldn't work, guys, it just wouldn't work.
I think the highest potential untested OP game idea is actually a collectathon 3d platformer in the vein of Mario Odyssey. The infinitely-repeating open world pitch comes from a really understandable desire to explore every nook and cranny of the manga's world. And I get it. But that idea overlooks how much of the full world would just be empty ocean and, again, a forced linear string of locations for the majority of the game. So we compromise by cutting the potential tedium of sailing and making each of the main locations from the crew's adventure into a focused mini-sandbox. Levels big enough to explore, but small enough to still have details and rewards hidden around every corner, and be meaningfully populated with recognisable characters. Give them quests and objectives based on the subplots and fights we remember. Milk that nostalgia. Hide some easter eggs.
What do we collect? Berries, meat, straw hat flags that symbolically represent solving the locals' problems and getting the plot one step closer to the boss fight, it doesn't matter. How you find them, what you recognise and who you meet on the way matters more.
Key to this is Luffy as a playable character. He's got a built-in grappling ability, which is a great platformer tool, a ground and air dash, maybe a hover from Gum Gum UFO, and all the bouncy properties of rubber (so hey, no fall damage). Key mechanics could include working out slingshot angles to get to collectables, or inflating Gum Gum Balloon during a fall to bounce super high off the landing (or bounce at an angle, if you hit a rooftop or a slope) to get where you need to go. You could easily fill any island's main city with tantalising strings of ledges, platforms and grabable points leading up to the big towers with sparkly bits on top for great platforming. A rubber pirate is a born jumpman! The game almost designs itself!
Obviously you'd have enemies and bosses around the place as well, but we've had a lot of One Piece fighting games and action things like Pirate Warriors. Luffy as a fighter is pretty fleshed out, mechanically. I want to see what can be done to make him feel good to move around and get the jumping, bouncing and snap-to moves feeling as smooth as possible. Give me that rubber physics system with systemic momentum and gravity that'll fill the speedruns up with crazy glitches and impossible leaps.
That or I guess Super Smash Bros Ultimate with One Piece characters. That's a fighting game I could live with.

That one already exists multiple time over now (but we should get another one)
-
I'd really like another Ganbarion take on a 2D fighting game, less like Gigant Battle and more like Jump Ultimate Stars [loads of manga scenes, the koma system was interesting and evocative of great mangá moments, there's little elements of RPG through the plataform-action-thing that sold the game to me…]
but i'd also like to see they trying something besides fighting games. in the past we had some kind of tag game (Treasure Battle), a baseball spin off, a scrolling game (Round the Land), mini-game collection (Pirate Carnival), action-adventure (Unlimited Cruise, World Seeker) and RPG (Romance Dawn), so it would be fun to see the developers try something new. I believe we are past the risk of a racing game, and gacha games are really unappealing to me, so I'm looking forward to what's next.

Eiichiro Oda Comment on My Hero Academia: Drawing Smash Pamphlet !
" When you try to draw a character from BNHA, you'll find that their design are so elaborate. I feel like if you need to draw them in action, it would be much easier to do so with less details, but that's why Horikoshi is so amazing- he actually enjoys drawing like that! The character's feelings are so strong that I get caught up in it and feel like my own body is impacted. That's why I just know that this manga is sure to capture the hearts of all readers! Congratulations on your first Exhibition! "

Eiichiro Oda tribute to Boku no Hero Academia :wub::wub:

I never thought I'd say that about one of Oda's drawings, but I…don't like it that much. I guess it shows just how much work goes into the costume design of MHA. I think Oda commented about that in a recent weekly author's notes.
-
I can only imagine how stoked Horikoshi must be to have someone he drew fanart for in the past now draw one of his characters. It's gotta be big for him.
-
I love the way his hair and face is drawn. It's a kind of face I haven't seen in One Piece. The whole drawing gives me slight Naruto vibes.
So happy for Horikoshi. This is awesome.
-
Gotta be honest, it gives me the vibe that Oda doesn't follow MHA that much.
It's a nice drawing but it's lacking impact imo, it's just very cookie cut. -
it looks kinda bad. maybe because Horikoshi art is ultra detailed and Oda's quite cartoon-ish and clean…? Dunno, I liked Oda's Jotaro, but this one goes in the same batch as the ugliest Goku ever he drew for a SJ cover a few years ago.

It wasn’t Oda’s design to begin with, but the attempt and gesture is still nice.

Glénat announces that One Piece Volume 1 reaches 1,000,000 copies in France!!
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
More details from French market.
- One Piece has sold more than 25,000,000 copies in France.
- In 2020, One Piece sales were 8,3% of all French market (2,179,989 copies).
- 570,000 copies sold in the first 2 month of 2021, 115% more than in 2020.
-
Would be nice to see the sale numbers of OP in each country. France was always a strong supporter.

@Don:
Would be nice to see the sale numbers of OP in each country. France was always a strong supporter.
Panini is OP's publisher in Brazil and it's unofficially known that it's one of their best sellers (not as good as Nardo, but it's doing great). We don't have a clue about numbers yet, but Brazil was never big on books or comics so I don't expect the number to be anywhere close to 5k per volume

Books in Brazil dont need to say how many copies they print, like in the page where they said where it was printed and the copyright, etc?
But, selling less than 5k copies per volume seems low for a country the size o Brazil.
Can they actually turn a profit, after distribution? -
I've never seen anyone get a grip of those numbers. Not in the 00s, 10s or now.
From what a translator or editor let us eventually know, they do have profit enough to keep bringing 10-15 new titles yearly even though we are in the middle of an economic crisis.
-
Now that's something I'd never expect.

Will that be the Top 50 characters Coverspread?
Because I can't think of another way of putting 50 characters in a spread. -
Given how busy Oda's pages can get and how much fun we all have hunting Pandaman (hey when was the last time we saw him?) it actually kinda works as a crossover idea. I have no idea how anyone managed to connect those dots in the first place, but now that it's happened I can see it.
-
This is perfect for One Piece. Can't wait for the next chapter!
Another thing I'd love to see from One Piece is one of those 1000-piece puzzles with loads of characters and hidden goofy moments.
