Sometimes I feel authors are trying to make the most ridiculous hair in an attempt to stand out.

Sometimes I feel authors are trying to make the most ridiculous hair in an attempt to stand out.
This is the actual origin of weird and colorful hair in manga/anime though, right? And maybe also various exaggerated features, it's a stylistic element born of market forces and financial necessity. At least that's my understanding.
-
I gave it a try, but something really irks me even if I can't quite put my finger on it. The art is sometimes hard to read - possibly at large it is just as messy as the hair ; emotions are played to the extreme and faces are a little disturbing. Storytelling is maybe all over the place, there's a lot happening very fast in a single chapter between sick mom, cinderella-style stepfamily, school entrance exams…It's too much to take at once as far as I am concerned.
I like the piano theme, but it's possible I can't ever bring myself to enjoy that read
-
The chapter felt like it flew by, despite how much stuff was covered. I'm willing to give it a few more chapters and see how it progresses.
-

Well… yeah. That's entirely the point.
And if that's not appropriate you have to find something else to make them look distinctive.
-
I'd give that maybe 6/10. Art and story was a bit messy, but the idea itself is great and the art has an experimental touch I really like. The whole thing reminded me of the manga I read in the 00s. And while this first chapter had a lot of set up… after the chaos that is Red Hood, I appreciate knowing the setting and what to expect this early. Hopefully.
I'm giving this a shot, but can't say I'm too hopeful. The mangaka needs to either fix the messiness or make it actually enjoyable, because I doubt I'm gonna stand several chapters like this.
-
The "mediocre" guy who comes from the talented family and practiced for a month passed while the hardworking cousin who took piano classes forever didn't. Why are so many underdog stories botched like that?
-
tbf the main character also failed entirely as well. It was only the one dude in the hat who saw something in him that allowed him to pass.
-
Yeah, this feels like a big dud already.
-
Not my cup of tea either. Although i enjoy music serie usually. And they are rare in jump
But we already have Yazakura familly for the genious siblings
And if i want a great piano cindirella story, i can reread Nodame anytime -
And here I thought Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo was a weird title.
-
they skipped through the entire harry potter premise in 3 panels but spent 3 pages to set it up is a red flag for sure
-
Well… yeah. That's entirely the point.

Hair can be unique without it looking like the main character doesn't own a comb.

There's only so many "normal" styl;es you can do before it starts to all look the same. You have to start getting weird eventually.
If the series works people stop questioning it. Like in Dragonball Goku has horrible hair but you don't think of it. Yugioh you don't really notice it in the original series, just when the sequel series give their protags increasingly crazy multi-colored looks. WHat's Sailor Moon without the 6 foot long pigtails?

-
There are already plenty of successful music mangas so i don't really understand your point.
Of course you cannot give the reader the same emotions he would have when listening to a concert but it is still possible to make interesting stories and authors have found original ways to display musicNodame and Blue Giant are among my favourite mangas. Beck is a huge classic. Jump Square is currently having a music serie with Kono Oto Tomare. And there are hundreds of other examples
-
Nana is also really good. Nodame is underappreciated in the community but fondly look back on by the Japanese because of how good it was, transcending its genre.
Your Lie in April was originally a manga and despite the melodrama really drove home the hardships of music. Kids on the Slope was brilliant in depicting early jazz in this small window of history.
Really, the difference between a good music manga boils down to the research and whether the writer truly love and understand the history of the music it is depicting.
Without that research and tremendous effort, it will become superficial. E.g: Fuuka. -
I gotta admit, the main reason I'm sticking with this manga is because I like the mentor character. Their design is striking all the right chords.
Other than that I'm vaguely interested at best. I like the amateur feel, it definitely feels like a new author treading the waters and trying ideas they think might be cool. It's endearing, and now that Red Hood is out of the way I appreciate someone sincerely trying to bring their idea to life and sticking to it. There's downfalls though. This isn't a story for anyone who actually cares about the real-life intricacies of music, the whole piano thing feels more like a backdrop for the author to talk about emotion and visualize cool scenes. I really like some of the stuff they're drawing when the characters are playing, the school girls this chapter were pretty cool. But it falls down again by not providing stories that are interesting enough, or any sense of struggle where I really feel for the protagonist. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding what the story is trying to say.
I'm still uncertain what to think of it. Can't say I expect it to survive for long in this state - maybe if it lucks out and there's a lot of stinkers that keeps it afloat. Nor is it a manga I'd recommend people to read. But I think I'll stick with it for a while more and see where it goes, there really is something endearing about it that reminds me of the days when I just started drawing, not caring about what anyone else thought and doing stuff that made me happy.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Now that I think about it, I think I like this series because it feels like something I would create (if I ever get to making that fabled comic I've tried to do for like fifteen years now). Weird emotions, wavy art with flowy characters, abstract stuff and not really looking to deep into the mechanisms of things... to be honest I don't think I could create anything good, not even close to something like this that still has a lot of flaws, but I'm happy to look at this series and feel like there's someone else out there that draws a little bit like me.
-
Past my initial gripe with the talented vs hardworker theme (Lucky really hasn't been practicing hard), this manga does have some charm. It was interesting to me that the ilusions aren't just a narrative tool but real in-universe. So what appeared like a real life setting was in fact magic realism.
For now, I'm interested in brother 2's titan, what it represents and how will Lucky defeat it. -
I'm sticking with it. It can be a little hard to follow sometimes but its very different from all the other series in JUMP right now so I'm curious to see where it will go.
-
Interesting design choice to have the MC and his siblings have these big wacky proportioned hairstyles and everyone else has relatively normal hairstyles
So far it's keeping me in
-
The rankings the last few weeks don't look too good. Reading the last chapters my guts telling me it might be wrapping up, it could certainly end on a satisfying note at this point. But at the same time I really enjoyed the last two chapters and the series feels like it's steadily improving and finding it's own identity. Hoping my guts wrong and PPPPPP gets to continue for a while.
-
It's probably my favourite new series, but, yeah, it is not looking good…
-
Talk about unintentionally topical… good for Lucky he didn't go with the real world context of the song.
Feels like Lucky is starting to grow a spine this arc. It's nice to see. Can't wait to see where this chapter leads.

So this chapter, or at least the first half, was a retelling of the oneshot ( https://imgur.com/gallery/OQJXzlZ ).
Hino is one of my favourite characters. Really looking forward to his performance. And it is interesting to see Lucky return to his previous "make my siblings happy" state.
PS: I've just noticed that Sorachika, Sikato and Don have a lot more black keys in their eyes than Reijiro, Mimin and Fanta. I suppose that it shows their Doriki levels.
-
I've been quietly rooting for this series. I dunno, I might also be a sucker for a rainbow-haired cast. Or that I think an anime adaptation would really let it blossom with its visuals (a la Cantabile, Your Lie in April?)

Things are heating up but with a chapter title like that I hope it's not signaling the end of the series. Back then when it was young, the joke was always that the sign of the axe would come in the form of the mom's health, but I think in this case it's also pretty integral with this particular sibling. Fingers-crossed for the series in the weeks to come
-
This series has really grown on me. I was a bit worried when Lucky lost his personality but seems it was meant to be intentionally unsettling.
I like how among the manga I'm currently reading PPPPPP is kinda doing it's own little thing. It fills the craving for something experimental. Plus I love the blend of using music to create fantastical landscapes - those are the prettiest pages.
-
This arc has been somewhat confusing to me. I don't really get the deal with Lucky's ego/split personality. Also Sorachika's so OP that he feels out of place.
-
The idea with Lucky is that if he was selfish and played for himself then he would probably be the best musician out of all of them. But he got so influenced by outside sources as a child that he began playing exclusively to make others happy and it made him worse. Sorachika wants him to go back to being the selfish version becuase he believes Lucky is holding himself back but Lucky doesn't want that because he doesn't want to become something he thinks is uncareing / unkind (like his father).

Chapter 57: https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1014691
It really says something when the visuals on paper can really make you visualize the scene in motion. Sorta meta!
-
Series ending with chapter 70, that's a bummer. I felt that it had lots of whimsical aspects and some spooky vibes. I admired the creativity with the musical art and the way it was showing without telling, so I was low-key looking forward to how the anime adaptation would've gone. Something along the lines of Your Lie in April. Also imagined Mimin to be voiced by Saori Hayami for some reason!
-
Wow, I didn't expect that. It's true that it wasn't ranking well in the TOC lately and it felt like it was rushing some things (Dada backstory, learning Don's dream, meating Sikato), but I still thought it was safe.
It's different from the rest of the series and it had so much left to tell.... -
Dang, that sucks. This wound up one of my favourites on Mangaplus. I'm half-surprised it's ending. It would never be a hit among the masses but I thought it was safe since it's been running fairly long.
It's no masterpiece but it's very unique. It's abstract take on exploring emotions and characters was fascinating, the character designs charming and it was nice to have a series being different. It was beautiful when it went all out during the musical scenes.
Best way I'd describe it is meandering through a garden. There's no clear direction of where it wants to go and do, but it kinda gets away with it. You're appreciating this little world, stopping to look at the flowers and discovering new things as you go, relaxing in the atmosphere.
It's a shame. I really wanted to spend more time here.
I hope we get the volumes in English, I'd be interested in collecting this one.

This is the saltiest ending since Red Hood.
-
I'm not gonna lie, I'm laughing my ass off over here.
-
End with a bang huh? This made me imagine if Naruto ever got cut early like this, the 9 tails would've said f-this and murdered the village.
Hmm, thinking of a manga's bad ending route would make an interesting new thread
-
OMG that's quite a memorable ending. One uping Will Smith.
I hope she changes magazines going forward...I believe she would do better in a monthly or more artsy publication, although that would lower my chances of putting her new works under my radar.
-
lmao what a weird-ass ending. I'm really curious at what point they find out it was ending because some parts of this last section felt like wrap-up, some felt randomly inserted and then this chapter feels like its out of nowhere.
-
If things haven’t changed, they get a warning and wait a few more chapters before being told to wrap it up in a few? I can’t look atm so I’m not sure if things start to add up if you look at the point where the mom’s condition was getting worse. I got the feeling it was definitely over by the time the girl decided to be a conductor which lead to the Dada flashback.
-
To put a proper farewell to the series, I'm happy I read this and I look forward to collecting the volumes if they're ever released in English. While there's a lot you could criticise I find it hard to, kinda in the same way I'm less inclined to criticise an indie game compared to an AAA title.
The flaws didn't really matter compared to enjoying this abstract, different little world that the author presented as they wanted. Good or bad, PPPPPP did it's own thing and stayed true to it. With all my anxiety about my own writing it's something I find inspiring.

I'd love this! It'd be interesting to see what people would think constitutes a bad ending.
Though I'd probably just end up writing alternate fan fic scenarios instead of actual bad endings :P -
