Volume 85 Predictions/Discussion
-
-
Thanks for the info, prathlamm!
-
This volume has been all about Sanji reaching his lowest point, with Pudding's betrayal and the wedding plot(s) revealed, and then finally meeting Luffy and resolving to crash the wedding. Besides this, the Straw Hats have cleared their hurdles and reunited and, if not for Sanji's intentions right now, they could be on their way out of Totto Land with 3 poneglyphs in tow and nobody noticing… So, the story suggests a "hungry Luffy being fed by Sanji" cover, but two covers with Luffy and Sanji being so prominent in a row would be weird...
-
I expect Count Niwatori.
-
I'd say the volume is more about the Strawhats turning things around. So I'm guessing it'll have something to do with Luffy (and Nami?) breaking out of the book prison.
-
This'll probably be an action cover with Luffy and Nami breaking out of prison, and maybe of Pedro vs. Tamago. Background characters might be Jinbe and Pudding. Color…maybe lime green? I'm craving a red cover but that'll probably be saved for the next volume if you know what I mean
-
Pudding-swan's smile hits the cover showing her third-eye along with Nitro and Rabiyan laughing like madness just entered the room. Above the cover. In plain color
Luffy & Nami inside the prison book looking worried after Pudding's comment with Mont D'or's face surrounded by flames laughing at their side. Middle-side of the cover, normal color.
Sanji making the bento at the lowest part of the cover, normal color (weak color).Other option is a scope on the Luffy Vs Cracker, the Full Stomach mode middle-centered with Cracker at right and the Enraged Army's principals at the left, Pudding above in plain color and Baum down at the cover. Least happening, Cracker's face got an image on vol. 83.
-
I think this could be the villain cover arc or maybe it will be the next one?
Maybe it could be sanji and luffy with reiju and pudding?
-
I think Brook deserves a prominent spot on the cover.
-

I don't think this arc is going to have something like that. We don't really have a clear and focused villain group. It's more like a big huge mess with multiple factions, all kind of enemies of one another: Straw Hats, Big Mom's crew, Firetanks, Germa 66, Sun Pirates… Who knows who else is going to show up backing the Firetanks conspiracy? So far we've had only 3 villain group covers and they were for focused, rather small and emblematic villain groups: Baroque Works, CP9, Donquixote Pirates. I suppose we'll see the next one at Wano (I expect 1-on-1s for most of the crew there and at Raftel, basically).
-
I'd like to see the faces of the present members of the crew plus Jinbe, Pedro, Carrot, Reiju, Pudding, and Big Mom in the background, with sinister Pudding and Big Mom at the top. Then have Sanji small and alone in the foreground. Working title is "A Ray of Light."
-
I don't think they'd give away the evil Pudding twist right on the volume cover. Then again, they named a volume "The Death of Portgas D. Ace," so who knows.
-
This will probably have Pudding on the cover but I hope it doesn't spoil anything.
An idea I thought of is just Pudding smiling sweetly in the center while we see images of the straw hats fighting/struggling around her, kind of like the volume 23 cover with Vivi.
-
Can we have Pudding on the cover without her 3rd eye but on the inside flap her 3rd eye is revealed. That could be cool.
-

Only problem with this is how does oda cater to volume readers, has he ever majorly spoiled an event of this magnitude, on the cover of a volume before? Pudding isnt evil until 850, the 2nd chapter in the volume
-
Pudding most likely won't appear on the cover till she in a wedding dress.

You have big mom twice, who did you leave out the first time?

Bu-u-ut, i want Pudding-swan like right now D:
I'd remember seeing Pudding's good side on the background of the vol where the crew arrives Totland, right? It is more possible that i'm wrong, but still want it.
-
@Long:

No one. I was just specifying exactly where Pudding and Big Mom would be since the order of the others doesn't matter as much.
-
Chapter 857 is okay-ish to end the volume on since it concludes Sanji's reunion with the crew (besides meeting them face-to-face). But I would prefer to have Luffy's imminent meeting with Bege to be included as well. Especially since it would be pretty fitting to have the volume begin with the reveal of the Vinsmokes betrayal plan to have it end with a deal concerning a Big Mom betrayal plan. I just hope that the wedding day finally starts by Chapter 860 at most after all of this time we've spent hyping up how the event is in "just a few hours".
-
With Chapter 859 out, that makes eleven chapters since Volume 84 (which ended on Chapter 848). With the wedding about to start, I'm pretty sure that a twelfth chapter can't be squeezed in. So I think there are two possibilities for the amount of chapters Volume 85 may have. Eleven chapters, which would end on Chapter 859. It works well because Bege's plan has been laid out in full and the wedding will finally start in Chapter 860. However, I think it could also be only nine chapters, ending on Chapter 857. That actually works well too because it ends with Sanji reuniting with the crew, and Jimbei suggesting the deal with Bege works as an adequate cliffhanger. It would also allow the future Volume 86 to start off with Bege's plan being explained, which would then be shown off in action during the rest of the chapters in that specific volume. Ending on Chapter 858 can't work because it's right in the middle of the Bege meeting, and cutting the volume off right before Bege explains his plan would be cheap.
I think the most likely title for Volume 85 is A Ray of Light. Nothing else works better to sum up the Straw Hats' predicament of being betrayed by Pudding, but still managing to band together with optimism for their success and final escape. The Yonko Assassination Plan is cool, but too spoiler-heavy regarding Luffy and Bege's alliance. And if this volume is only nine chapters long, then The Yonko Assassination Plan can totally work as an awesome title since that's what the plot will center around in that volume.
-
I think chapter 859 will be the last one here. That closing narration box, with the tea party from hell about to begin, is too good a hook to not end on. 858 would also work, since the start of Bege's meeting is a strong scene to close on. That case would keep the volume from ending in an infodump, and would mean volume 86 gets to open with the plan, then spend the rest of its pagecount watching it go off the rails. That would be cool, but the end of 859 just feels like more of volume-ending line. And it means v86 can be all tea party, all the way through. That'll be some good hype for it.
The point's been made before in these threads, and I feel it bears being made again, a nine chapter volume is probably not happening at this point in the series. Back when it used to, every chapter had 19 pages. Now everything except the colour spread chapters has 17. A nine chapter volume at this point would be the shortest in OP's history by a margin of about 20 pages, assuming it doesn't get padded to hell and back with extra front and endpages. For that reason, it's super unlikely.
The cover, in my mind, will focus on Luffy and his team (including Jinbe and Sanji of course) more than the Charlottes. This is the book where they reunite and start pushing back at last. In fact, the only member of Big Mom's crew, if any, I expect to see is Pudding. For the squad in the mirror world we might even get some of the great shocked looks and face faults from the Brook rescue sequence played up for their cover poses, for a bit of lighheartedness. It's the scene with the best mix of being memorable without being spoilery for the front of the book, and while the volume is a bit downbeat and serious inside, as we reach a point of despair and start clawing our way back, it wouldn't be like Oda to dwell on that, even for the cover.
As a side note, the art for the cover of Jump #15 was super nice, and it'd be cool to see it again as an inside title page or something like that, and this is the soonest opportunity for it to happen. Fingers crossed.

Ah, thank you for reminding me! I think my misunderstanding of that was the first conversation we ever had. XD
Just thinking of a Luffy and Bege-centric cover is getting me all giddy (not that it will happen in Volume 85 specifically). Pudding needs to be somewhere on the cover though due to how big the betrayal is. Either that, or she needs to be front and center in Volume 86 due to that covering the wedding before it goes to hell. Face faults from the Brook rescue mission is funny and definitely sounds like something Oda would want to work into a volume cover too.
-
It is quite obvious that the volume's title is going to be Goat Overload.
That was the most significant chapter of the pack.

Gangster Gastino needs to appear as well, in 86
That would be a hell of a cover, Capone/Luffy/Gastino
-
Since the moment I read the chapter, I thought that Luffy/Capone/Gastino cover paralleling the 68 one (my favourite PTS) would be awesome. It would probably fit the next volume more though as it would spoil too much (and the numbers would match). As for this one, I assume we're gonna get way too many characters not creating any coherent image.

Volume 85 is the first-selling / category comic, in Amazon-jp ( Currently )
-
According to Amazon-jp, the volume 85 will consist 200 pages which i will be 10 chapters from chapter 849 - Chobro in the Land of Mirrors to 858 - Meeting.

I would find it more interesting that the volume end on the chapter 859:sad:

I understand why, but it also makes sense to begin Volume 86 with Chapter 859. It details Bege's plan in full at the start, which will be shown in full during the next few chapters in that volume.
-
Oh hey, I didn't think I saw a pagecount there when I checked it earlier in the day. That's cool! Feels earlier than usual. Maybe we can hope for a slightly early cover reveal as well. Unlikely, but I hope…
859 and 860 were both good closing possibilities, and I have no issue with what we're getting here. Vol 85 is gonna be a solid book, and 86 is building to be even better.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, with this info I almost want to preemptively peg chapter 860's "Emperor Assassination Plan" as the title for vol 86. I know we only have two other chapters to go on, but it feels like a really good fit.

just noticed the date here….his wasnt some elaborate extra early april fools day prank was it

This volume cover will be the last opportunity for Oda to display Luffy without a tooth on the cover.
I hope we at least get that.

Or it could happen at the end of the series in a cover showcasing Luffy vs Blackbeard

I'll humor that idea by saying this. If Oda intended to have Luffy gradually lose some of his teeth so he can be paralleled with Blackbeard in their future clash, then why wasn't the tooth loss permanent?

It wouldn't be appealing for the main character to keep that look for the next 40 or so volumes (and would lose some significance when it's finally portrayed against BB). If it happens it may be close to their clash (or during the fight) and this incident will just be remembered by then with Sanji probably. Or Oda could very well do it now too with Luffy smiling, in contrast to the future cover where he will be angry :ninja:
-
Man, the crew changed a lot over the years.
-
I like it.
still not cover with Pudding, I'm surprised.
-
Is it just me or is Reiju drawn kind of weird?
-

Yeah, I thought she looked "fan-art" cover like but the others look legit.
-
I was expecting Capone would be on this cover. Well, I hope he appears in the next one, at least. Nonetheless, it's a good cover.
-
Title of the Volume Liar from Chapter 856

Your wish has been granted.
-
Is it just me or is Reiju drawn kind of weird?
Probably feels that way because Oda's never, or almost never, drawn a character with lipstick before. At least in color. Also she's positioned to be very in-your-face on the illustration.
It is kind of odd to me that Sanji was omitted entirely (personally I would've expected his relieved/crying face when he comes upon Luffy to be where his sister is), but otherwise that's a very good group shot, and I really like the choice of color. Chopper and Carrot being so prominent also makes sense given how they were the MVPs of these chapters.
Though that Pedro looks almost like it was merely copy-pasted from an earlier illustration. I think it's 'cause the pose is almost identical to the colorspread that had everyone drawn in that Japanese paint style.
-
He´s drawn characters with lipstick: Caesar, Iceburg, Kid. Just to name a few.
The cover is ok on its own, but we´ve seen the formula quite often lately: Vol 43, 64 and 81 inmediately come to mind. And I would have much preferred to see some new characters in color, or at least any hint that they allied themselves with Capone.
-
There is something wierd, I can't find Sanji on the cover… and Pedro is blonde????
-
That thoothless Luffy reminds me Balckbeard in Volume 25.
