I''m not a big fan of Film Gold but conceptually just something akin to an underworld boss like Tesoro would be more interesting than the already stale "big inoperative legend from the past" again.
If anything, Stampede made me realize how bored I am with typical filler shonen movies, no matter how flashy it looked. And it really feels like audiences want something more substantial these days, when it comes to anime movies.
I think Stampede was enjoyable enough but there have been better One Piece films previously so its down to the next director and his crew to make something that's not only great on first viewing but is also rewatchable and entertaining. I can let Stampede off as it has been mentioned previously that the film is now a celebration of 20 years of One Piece in anime. Let's hope the next film is one of the memorable entries and not an extended episode (I saw the latest MHA film with my friend last week and he very much thought the film was this even though it had some great animation at times).

Man, I just saw Strong World in theaters last week with a friend (who is familiar with/likes One Piece but has never got too into it, but knows all the characters basically) and it was such a blast. I've seen it before, but it rocked to see it on the big screen. There's just something really fun and novel about it. No it's not a deep One Piece story, but it feels like One Piece and just a great little adventure that had enough weight to it. Nami of course was the standout, and it was also pretty funny. Of course you can complain about powerscaling and stuff (it doesn't feel like Shiki could ever come remotely close to the Yonko or something), but at the end of the day it was mostly a fun romp with characters we love on a theatrical budget. I did see Film Gold in theaters back in 2016 with my younger sister, we both really enjoyed that. I didn't get the chance to watch Stampede in theaters, but yeah it didn't feel as substantial to me. It was a great action sequence of a movie, it was flashy and fun. But even as not too deep as Strong World was, that sticks out as a lot more memorable and One Piece-y than Stampede.

There's of course the letters, but the pictures are always highlighting the color red. Wonder if that means anything?

Red for Luffy. Or maybe just the movie's aesthetic.

A former Rocks pirates villain would be the best way to go. WB, Kaido, Big Mom, Shiki etc that crew had many monsters that went on to make big names, no reason why 1 of them already name-dropped by Sengoku couldn't have been on the same level as they are now.

Of course it would be power level-fitting, but it would also honestly be boring. Since Strong World whatever pirate Straw Hats had to non-canonically fighting was a Level 6 Roger Era Pirate: Shiki, Redfield, Burnndy World, Bullet. Find a way to create a menace not lurking into the shadows for the last 20 years should be the first thing they need to establish to make the next villain somewhat less flat.

I loved Stampede for the one thing it did right: fanservice.
Other than that, yes, the villain was just another Broly and the movie was one giant action scene with bits of comedy thrown in.
It's one of those movies that's 99% better when you're in a theater full of screaming fans and not so great when you watch it at home alone.
-
Stampede was pretty much all spectacle, and in that I think it mostly succeeded, but yeah, there wasn't enough in the way of substance for my liking.
If they'd given it another 20-30 minutes to let the Strawhats hang out in the festival before the race (instead of cramming it all into the opening credits) and taken some extra time to develop the antagonists (and maybe given Festa some sidekicks), I think it would hold up quite a bit better in that regard…

What I like most about Stampede is that the movie knew it was all about fanservice. Never tried to pretend it was deep or had a super serious story, just went straight to the spectacle.
That said I hope the next movie goes back to a regular story, preferably one that's more about personal stakes and the strawhats instead of fighting a big legendary bad.

How about a movie where Luffy comes face to face with Garp for a final battle and giving kind of closure to Garps story.
Because I doubt Garp will still have any big role in the manga. -

@uniaka:
They already did former Roger pirate, former rival of Roger, former admiral, former ID level 6 prisoner, so I wonder way this movie will be about since it should be post wano.
Roger's apprentice.
I would've went with the most famous pirate back during Brook's prime just returning from space.

Some sources claiming leaks are calling it One Piece Red (which is ironic considering all the red in "Z"). Nothing confirmed but apparently it'll focus on Shanks and a new female character..
