Im surprised Ippo understood so well but that's great.

Ippo vs Date is really a great read. Also I always liked that Date was one of the few fighters Takamura didn't mock and even praised.

I enjoy this fight a lot more than I thought I would and it's not just because of Sendo. I'm not saying that Alf has become an amazing character out of a sudden but the way he has been portrayed in this fight so far made him grow on me.

You so rarely get to see Takamura with "equals" so it feels even more interesting to see him interact with someone he doesn't view like a kid brother or an enemy but just as a bud of equal standing

I think Date was tho only active Japanese fighter that got a world title match at that point and that was even before Takamura even got his chance so it make sense he'd sees him differently. Also it's one of those few time where Takamura acts like a proud big brother publicly. Asking Date to not underestimate Ippo.
I still quickly scroll but I'm letting the Gonzales v Sendo match play out so I can read it in one go.
Ah there we go, the mandatory handicap.
Now for gradual cornering followed by the my spirit is stronger rebound.
I have a feeling that the headbutt block will come back to bite Alf.
Considering how much power Sendo is packing in the smashes (enough to make Alf wary of countering them),
I somehow don't think he did enough to avoid taking significant damage.
He might be in for a wobble at a crucial moment.
Sendo is a Saiyan confirmed.
Chapter #1307:
! Lord Jesus, I had the Opening theme to the original series playing during this chapter and when Sendou came back for the win I just about shit myself with how well it synced to the song.
! SENDO YOU BEAUTIFUL LAD, I'M SHAKING
! But for real, that was fucking cool.
I was totally fooled and thought he was done.
Then BOOM, the money shot.
! I'm happy and irritated at these turn of events. While Sendo winning was unexpected and fantastic, Gonzale's character has lost any sort of value other than being Ippo's comeback victory. His whole character was defined by getting a rematch with Martinez. Since Sendo's the one whose going to be sacrificed to that Altar, all Gonzalez can do now is make Ippo ready for his turn. Also I'm really irritated by the fact that Sendo did such a fantastic job just by using his normal strategies and instincts against perfect Gonzales while Ippo was completely clowned by Gonzales using high level chess-like boxing strategies and could only get a chance when Gonzales shifted to berserk mode. It just makes Ippo look out of his depth and incompetent though it's not the first time the author pulled that shit, remember Woli?

Woli sucked.
! Sendo spent most of his match getting fucked up before pulling out his win. I dont think it makes Ippo imcompetent because he lost. They have different style and Sendo didnt pull a clinic. They both had intense match against Gonzalez. One got a narrow win and the other got a decent loss. It also is a thing where people where criticizing Ippo style of getting destroyed to win and also the whole Ippo had gotten complecent.
! No one is beating Martinez unless it's Ippo. The question become what defeat would have the bigger impact. Gonzalez getting beaten or Sendo. There's a point to be made about Ippo seeing someone who defeated him get destroyed. But I feel we already had a similar scenario with Date and they had a stronger scenario from the baton pass and being a presence in the manga much before the whole thing. Sendo and Ippo are friends or at least extremely friendly, their style are often compared and Ippo tend to feel strongly about the peers he bonded with early in his carreers. So a Sendo lost would feel much more visceral to him.
! So while I think getting a revenge would have been better for Gonzalez character. Story wise both side had value.
Where is the chapter? I don’t see it on mangadex or mangakakalot.
Thank you! Is that normally the place it releases first?
Thank you! Is that normally the place it releases first?
Yes. It's also where the r/HajimeNoIppo sub-reddit relies on.
Guess only Ippo gets to struggle in the world rankings. I feel petty but it irks me a little how his rival just brute forces his way into the world championship. I know Sendo isn't the plan guy, but if he had some observation or was exploiting some flaw it would've felt less so.
We'll probably learn that Sendou was using some sort of strategy in the next chapter. He swung first with his broken hand, so what if that was a lure to manipulate Alf's movements?
Sendo was always supposed to be like Ippo's antithesis. Everything Ippo knows about boxing has been beaten into him (literally) through constant training and teaching. Sendo has always been almost pure instinct, although you could say he was "polished" by his coach.
I feel kinda bad for Alf, but I have always figured Sendo would be the first "sacrifice" to Martinez before Ippo. And that's going to be brutal.
However you slice it, Sendo’s fight against Martinez, whenever it is, wont be anytime soon.
He’s gonna have to fix that fist, first.
I’d also wager in the long term that if Morikawa’s any least bit serious about the dangers of Sendou’s style of “tank it with my face” boxing, ultimately, Sendo’s boxing career isn’t going to be a super long one…
Sendo must have a harder skull than Ippo if he hasn't gotten punch drunk by now.
I don't know. I have no problems with this being the outcome of the fight and I really enjoyed it overall. However I think that all things considered it came a little too soon. Of course I wouldn't like for this match to drag on endlessly but considering the grand stage we're at the match now doesn't seem to be on a whole different level than other difficult matches. I admit that my memory might be playing tricks on me here but when Ippo fought Alf it somehow felt much more like a higher level from what we've seen before whereas here I now just feel like "well, this wasn't THAT difficult in the end". Of course you could extend the fight by Sendo falling down first panel next chapter or Alf actually getting up but at this point I don't think that the fight needs to be extended anymore.
All in all, not saying that it was bad. Just that for me personally it happened a bit too quick in the end.
It felt kind of easy. Like Ippo was getting stumped and trying all these moves and techniques, and the secret was to just be a man, eat the counter face first and then punch him even harder. I mean Ippo eats Sendo smashes like breakfast, and how he folded against Alfs punch gave the impression that his skills made the counter hits worse and not something you just braced for and ate. But i dunno maybe i'm misremembering how it all went down, just rambling

That's pretty much how I remember it too hence why I'm stuck with a feeling of "this is it?". The more I think about it the more this Alf and the one that fought against Ippo don't seem to be the same person. I mean I like the moment where Alf completely forgot about Ricardo and just seemed to enjoy the fight with Sendo but he was so much more on a higher level against Ippo.
I get the whole Sendo is built for fighting and he is like a literal feral animal thing. But that this alone is enough to take him where Ippo could not go feels off. Like dealing with the pressure of being in a cage with a wild animal thing feels played out since the king of Japan tournament, but here is the second best fighter in his class and he folds completely to that. Ippo conquered his big punch + scary aura combo waaay way back, and i really want for the next chapter to explain a bit on why Alf became so much mentally weaker during this match or what Sendo did beyond putting on pressure and aiming for a lucky punch.
in before sendo puts his title match against ricardo on the line as a bait for hippo to make it come back so that the author can have his cake and eat it too
It was confirmed that Ippo "had gotten weaker", I guess in that he was forgetting his basics and was too focused on other things. That and all he was thinking about was, "showing the world that his coach's training worked". He wasn't thinking about aiming for the world or anything like that, i.e. not enough ambition. For Sendo it's always about winning and beating the crap out of people, which probably works better against someone like Alf.
And Sendo kinda has to put his fight with Martinez on hold because he broke his fist.
I feel like Ippo is definitely going to come back after this fight. Hell, what if Sendou forced Ippo to fight Ricardo in his place? Ippo can lose but learn a lot from the fight and then turn around and begin to make a name for himself on the world stage? That or Ippo actually wins, assuming Morikawa is trying to wrap the series up finally while he still can.
Well that was . . a bit of a surprise:
https://mangakakalot.com/chapter/read_hajime_no_ippo_manga/chapter_1308
! I actually wouldn't mind if Sendo retired too now. Obviously won't gonna happen, but he has no realistic way of even achieving more than Date against Ricardo, let alone win. He only won because Alf wanted to go machismo mode and slug it out instead of sticking to tactical boxing. And maybe he could pass the baton (back) to Ippo now, to finish what he started. Problem is, Ippo can't just challenge Ricardo coming out straight from retirement, so god knows how many matches will he need to clim back to even be a world ranker. He has an advantage that Ricardo knows him already, but still. What do you guys think?
Sendo is losing bad to Ricardo. I imagine Ippo will destroy somene, get a decent challenge for a second, then a real ranking match, then either the ricardo match or one last match before it. So 3-4 match before Ricardo.
Im waiting for Miyata having the WBC championship and either Ippo will challenge win and then do a reunification with Ricardo. Or Ippo get the WBA from Ricardo and they do the reunification match.
I used to think Sendo and Miyata would fight it out to get the WBC title.
Only person I see beating Ricardo is Miyata. That is probably after he beats Sendo, who is actually my favorite character. It would set up a perfect Miyata/Ippo finale.

Miyata is not beating Ricardo in a weight thats not his since they presented Ricardo as the ultimate fighter of his class. Miyata also isnt losing and undermining the value of the Miyata Ippo fight. Both characters need to still have their great reputation when facing Ippo. So he's taking the WBC.
Ricardo is seemingly so skilled and well rounded that he'd make Takamura look like an amateur. I don't see frail counter puncher guy defeating a man like that, even by lucky punch.
I believe Morikawa actually ranked Takamura as better than Ricardo in a previous chapter in terms of pound for pound.

I mean Sendo took out Gonzales with Machismo and Ricardo got almost screwed by a 9 round planned counter. So I dont put above the author to put narrative above strict logic. Its just that doing a fight between them fucks up the narrative for 1 of them. They both the ultimate goal for Ippo. One in skills and the other emotionally.

Of course he won’t not when Takamura can just win by asspull.

Morikawa already killed the hype for that by having Ippo lose two fights in a row and this was after Ippo got his ass waxed by Gedo & Woli.
I believe Morikawa actually ranked Takamura as better than Ricardo in a previous chapter in terms of pound for pound.
In potential and at his prefered weight i could see it. But the Takamura who came close to losing against both birds seems notably less impressive than the guy nobody has been able to touch for a decade, let alone push his limits.
Sendo is the type to evolve in the middle of matches, not during training:
https://mangakakalot.com/chapter/read_hajime_no_ippo_manga/chapter_1309
And yeah, we kinda forgot that Martinez has a fight too.
Martinez is always an interesting character:
https://mangakakalot.com/chapter/read_hajime_no_ippo_manga/chapter_1310
Ricardo being on the look-out for someone to really challenge him…the loneliness of the strongest. I wonder when Ippo will finally seek him out?
Ippo still need a trigger to truly go for Martinez. The thing he loves boxing but he isn't really into competition or being the best.
Exactly. You need serious ambition to go after someone like Martinez, which Ippo just doesn't have.
Exactly. You need serious ambition to go after someone like Martinez, which Ippo just doesn't have.
Sendo will be the sacrificial limb. And if you time it right you could have Miyata having just won the WBC while Ippo is about to face Martinez and a open challenge to whoever wins the WBA match. So Ippo will be pump to avenge Sendo and fight Miyata.
Today we learned something about Philadelphia:
https://mangakakalot.com/chapter/read_hajime_no_ippo_manga/chapter_1311
So does he go down on first round or not?
Today we learned something about Philadelphia:

Besides the fact they hate Santa Claus and liked Philly native Joe Frazier so much they didn't erect a statue of him until after he died while a statue of Rocky Balboa which was made specifically for Rocky III was kept in the City?
For a moment I was really expecting them to not move for the entire first round^^
So i guess it is fair to assume that this guy is supposed to be greater than Date. Since Martinez sort of dares to hope that he maybe could give him some challenge. But since Ricardo has been built up to be so otherworldy it is hard to imagine him struggling like any of the other big dogs. I'm going to guess that it will be one of those this trick bothers him for a solid round then he smacks him down
This guy may be more talented than Date, but does he have Date's SPIRIT?
