cos: that's just creepy
They must bring back every 80's franchise. Next it will be the Smurfs!
Reminds me of American McGee's Strawberry Shortcake.
I have hopes for this new Thundercats…..well not really seeing as American animation has gone down the shitter.
Thundercats wasn't American animation anyway, it was produced and edited in the US but all the animation was done in Japan, just like Transformers.
Har har har, but that's not even the full of it; The studio that did the animation for Thundercats eventually became Ghibli!

Still, it was originally an American creation and was written and designed by Americans.
Yeah, I know, Miyazaki hired the Japanese team that worked for Rankin-Bass, and then they formed Studio Ghibli. They also were the ones that worked on stuff like the old Tolkien animations and The Last Unicorn.
@Advent`:

Yes, but that's not the animation part of it. :)
90% off all animated shows are outsourced to Korea anymore anyways.
Advent is spot on.
The credits of the Bleach Movie read like the closing of Winter Sonata.
Hell the credits to any cartoon show read like an oriental restaurant menu.
If I remember Inspector Gadget was made in Japan as well
Yep. Inspector Gadget:
The first sixty-five 22½-minute episodes were written, designed, storyboarded, and voiced-recorded in Canada at Nelvana Animation Studio, while being directed (long distance) by a French director. Most of these episodes were animated in Tokyo, Japan by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the studio that animated most DiC cartoons of the 1980s, while a few episodes were animated in Taiwan by Cuckoo's Nest Studio, before being finished in post production by the same Canadian studio Nelvana that did preproduction, and broadcast in the North America in September, 1983
Hey guys, just want to let you know that this is not official. I just found this guy's DA page: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29844617/?qo=5&q=by%3A2-cents&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps
Apparently he is a working professional in animation, so there is a possibility that this COULD happen, but it's only a pitch, and not something that's definately happening.
Whatever happened to stuff like:
This is one of the rare cases where I remember a cartoon from my elementary school days that looking back on doesn't suck. And what I mean by that is…very simple storylines with relatively simple animation that draw you in for 20 or so minutes and leave you satisfied. Naturally an American superhero animation lends itself to such a plot but regardless, I cannot think of many episodes of this series which actually sucked. There was what? That one episode with the Joker in a museum? Beyond that what else?
And no....not the shit it became on the WB.
I mean really folks. Animated programs these days are costantly 'toning down' everything from theme to design. This is the one animation I can think of that actually changed the design to make it even fuckin' creepier (Scarecrow).
You don't need a "pet monkey", hardcore music, PC bullcrap and a million things flying at the viewer to be good. Just a solid story and very few writers for animated programs today seem to be doing that.
I hope this will be different. But if it's anything like the recent bullcrap WB has spewed out....
Oh Fox Kids, why hast though abandoned the youth of today?
@Greg: If you liked BTAS series, you should watch the rest of the JLU. The plotlines are quite deep (seriously). The Cadmus Arc is the best arc. If I had to, I'd compare the Cadmus Arc to the Water7/EL Arc of One Piece. It's that good.
Anyways, back on topic.

You missed out on alot of great cartoons as a kid then. Mid to late 80s and the 90s had some of the best cartoons ever created.
And yest, Batman:TAS was quite possibly the best superhero cartoon ever made.

Which is what I thought too until I watched my old Saturday Morning tapes a few years ago.
Imagine my surprise when Ghostbusters was shit. Fantastic designs I'll grant but the dialogue was….the lines were okay but the delivery...man.
Uh....does "Saturday Morning" even mean anything anymore?
Gaara,
Well, one of my main points is that it doesn't need deep complex 'arcs' because the Fox (WB made) Batman had relatively simple plots, it was all in the delivery. There were some fairly basic 20 minute episodes in there that should have won awards. Like the origin of the Batmobile.
Uh...actually didn't it win some awards? Too lazy to Wiki.

actually, I find adding all that stuff makes it shit. They sacrifice a good story to throw in all these stupid bells and whistles, cause that's what the kiddies want. This is why I watch anime. Anime still has good stories.
I'm 25 and have always watched saterday morning cartoons. Then I stopped. OP, TMNT, and Winks were the only things keeping me up on Saterday mornings. and I'm sorry, Winks isn't that good to keep me wanting to turn on the TV in the morning. so, after 25 years, I've stopped watching Saterday morning cartoons.

I know, "children's entertainment" is going to the dogs. Instead of writing entertaining stories, it's gone to "will this hold their short attention span enough" and "will parents/FCC complain about it" and "is this in line with the shallow trends of today's fickle youth?".
I hope this will be different. But if it's anything like the recent bullcrap WB has spewed out….
Before you hope anything, realize that as I just said, this is really just a possible idea, nobody is actually making any effort to produce a Thundercats remake right now.
Might as well talk about it here than start a new thread.
Looks like a live action movie is on the horizon. Lovely.
this is terrible…..at least in he-man they actually kept him buff instead of making him into a near bishonen scrawny asshole.Lets hope this remake never takes place.
I forsee panthro using pop culture references
the new thundercats look really, really gay. God, the old school ones were the best. Everything in the 90s was great. GI Joe, Thundercats, even Captain Planet.
I miss being 5.
Thundercats was from the 80s
Thundercats and JI Joe weren't 90s cartoons, they both ended in the 80s. I'll reserve my opnion on Captain Planet, since I was well outside its targeted age bracket when it was on. But yeah, the 80s nostalgia's in full swing and the Hollywood remake machine's on board. ^^;
Edit: Nevermind. xD Cosmic set the record straight.
Seriously, instead of spending all their money on cheap remakes of 80's shows they should just run the originals for a brief test period and see how they do.. Yes, there will be a certain demographic of watchers who will be turned off by the designs and the 'non-anime flashy animation styles' but what harm could it do? (I certainly would enjoy seeing some episodes of Thundercats and various other 80's-90's cartoons; instead of watching some of the shows they put out these days..) Then if the originals don't do all that well, they could go ahead and try to air the more modernized versions and see if they have a place amongst today's youth.
And while we're on the subject of bringing old shows back… Does any network still show Loony Tunes these days? I can't tell you how much I miss that program on CN..
Thundercats was from the 80s
90s, 80s both really the same thing. I was referring to late 80s and early 90s
Guys, the Lion-O design was a fan creation, and there is no new cartoon in the works. Old thread. :P
This is the first I've heard of a movie, though. Who knows whether it'll happen or not.
90s, 80s both really the same thing. I was referring to late 80s and early 90s
Speaking as someone who grew up in both decades, uhh, yeah, there's a difference, trust me.
And you know what's really funny (to me) about this rumored new movie? This very morning my roommate was bitterly theorizing that there'd be a Thundercats movie sometime soon if the Transformers one did well. Tickled me.
Speaking as someone who grew up in both decades, uhh, yeah, there's a difference, trust me.
meh. whatever.
THUNDER! THUNDER! THUNDERCATS! HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
It's true, even late 80's and early 90's were rather different and transitional.
I'm still waiting for the return of the Smurfs and Snorks :3 Noooooo

i don't think this would work, outside of nostalga. the whole mentality of kids shows nowadays is different. Heck, all shows are different nowadays. it's what is normal in society for that time. Just try going back and watching some old show, like the jeffersons, or full house. Not the same as it was in the 80's/90's. Maybe we'll come back to that mentality at some point. I mean, we swung back and picked up 70's and 80's fashion again. I just don't think we're there yet, TV wise. So, if they want to make money off of 80's charicters, they gotta redo it to apeal to today's youth.
We all say it sucks cause we remember the old one, and adore that one. but todays kiddies don't know that. I mean, would you go back and watch Gumbi? probably not. My dad, however, who grew up on it, was finatic when I found some old episodes for him. (i thought they were lame)

You bring up very good points. I hadn't thought of it that way before.
jaw drops Say what?
It's a bad year to be a celebrity.
I'm assuming there is a connection here.
Damn O_O Just damn, he will be missed.
What the hell? Seriously, what? :O What the- I'm in complete shock. O.O
2009 all over again.
Like last year, now I'm waiting in complete dread. Everyone cool was dying, now they're getting actively killed.
Bumping for Thundera.
is this real?
what is this?
Bumping for Thundera.

whoah. never saw that. hope it's good.
Yeah, the Studio 4°C thread was posted in the anime section.
I'd love to see Leonard Starr come back and pen a few episodes. Also hoping Bruce Timm has some involvement.
Pics are from London Toy Fair, apparently.
Also merchandise:
!
Looks good to me. Hopefully the storytelling is good.
Really like the new style for Cheetarah…and a tad surprised they dumped the Wilys but I sort of hope we get the later Thunderans later on at least. (well Lynx-O and Pumira...Bengali maybe but he's good at reparing the Sword of Omens)
