Ugh… Punk Hazard was THE place I was hoping for Blu-ray to start.
Guess Toei are never gonna let that happen huh?

Toei or Funimation. Who knows who is to blame. I don’t imagine it getting Blu-ray treatment anytime soon, considering the giant hiatus and return would’ve been the opportune time for them to switch formats.
It's gotta be Toei. One Piece is currently to my knowledge the ONLY show FUNimation has where we know HD Masters exist, and FUNi even uses them on digital services, but it hasn't gotten an HD Home video release.
Which is even more baffling because that includes Dragon Ball Z, Kai, and Super… ALL of which are Toei and ALL of which have Blu-ray releases.
We probably never going get a bluray release for the tv series at this point. Since there are other countries that already reach this point and still are releasing dvds. Couple examples, the French release is up to Whole Cake Island and its still being release on dvd. The German release is currently up to middle part of Dressrosa and its still being release on dvd.

Seconded. This was the chance to switch over and it didn't happen. I'll just continue to buy the DVDs to support the show–yet primarily watch it on the streaming service for better quality. I don't really believe streaming services when they claim to be anywhere near bluray quality, though; bluray is way more crisp on my TV. So bluray would've been the best of all options. It's a bummer that they didn't switch over. If I'm ever at a convention again, I'll try to ask someone.
There's probably a higher demand for DVDs than Blurays.
Now that I just don't get.
There is a lot of companies that still releases dvds over bluray. For example, both Shout Factory and Mill Creek mostly release dvd only and only have a few bluray releases.
DVD players still have a greater marketshare than Blu-ray.

Pretty much this. There several shows that I still collect are dvd only. For example, I recently got the complete Rookie Blue series boxset (Underrated drama in my opinion.) Outside of the first season, which was the only one that got a bluray release, the rest of the series was dvd only.
That's all a very good reason why the DVD release is continuing, it says nothing about why a Blu-ray release isn't happening period.
Almost always if something is getting a DVD release but NOT a Blu-ray release it's one of three reasons:
1: They don't believe there's enough demand for the property to justify the extra cost.
2: Good Quality HD Masters of the property don't exist.
3: Rights Issues.
We know 1 isn't true because the Movies get a Blu-ray release without issue, and we know 2 isn't true because FUNi uses the HD masters for streaming.
So it's gotta be 3.

Your counterpoint doesn't disprove #1. The movies may sell better than the episode sets. It's far less of a commitment for people to buy or collect the movies than the 900+ episodes. It still could be #1, or at least, Funimation's assumption that #1 is true.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I could be offbase here, but I feel like someone collecting a 900 episode show would prefer higher quality videos. If you're into it enough to collect such a long series, you'll probably be into it enough to want a good image.
Sure would be nice if we could get an announcement or confirmation of release schedule from Funimation…
For perspective, the chapters this will cover first came out 8 years ago in 2012, the time we started getting WSJ just two weeks behind Japan.

At this point, I am willing to forgive the wait if we could get a consisent release until at least the end of punk hazard. I realize with covid-19, that definitely stopped the dubbing process while they were likely working on dressrosa but I hope it won't be as long of a wait as the break have right now waiting for punk hazard.
Forgive the wait? Nah. If we’d been going one set every two months since the hiatus, we’d be seven sets into DR right now.
They’re not going to make up for lost time, but if they did, it would have to be literally one set a month for over a year.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I wonder if that was their plan: one set a month until they finish DR--or until they catch up. Hopefully they can continue with that plan after COVID has blown over enough. Seems like they at least wanted to get through DR, if not further.
They're not going to do a release every month. This is kinda similar situation like the release for the 2nd and 3rd volumes of Season 2, which were release back to back months. And then the releases went back to the normal every other month release.
Plus with the current situation, the dubbing for Dressrosa is going to slow really down. It took them three weeks to release episode 84 of My Hero Academia, a week ago and they still got four episodes left dub for the season.
But they're like 100 episodes ahead of releases–that's around 7-8 sets. Surely they could stand to do one a month for a little while? Obviously, they're behind on simuldubs, so that's a different situation. Hopefully this isn't a one time thing as you're saying.
There's nothing to forgive, really. I'm certainly not holding any grudges, I'll be buying it whenever they release it. It's just that they took so long that the momentum for people rushing to get it might take a hit. Time will tell if people will jump on board buying these sets again or not, with the Collections setting a hard standard to beat on value and quantity. But I do hope it works for them: the show is still great no matter when it's watched.

Would help the "momentum" if they'd bother to announce the new set anywhere. Hopefully we'll get a trailer soon and they'll sink a little money into promoting that. Would love to hear Cesar and Kin more on the trailer.
I don't expect collections to come out until next year or late this year. That's a second purchase for me, so I don't care much. Betting we'll get Smoker and/or Cesaer on two of those next three covers. Maybe Law instead of one of those (but if they're smart, they'll save Law for DR).

Haha. I saw that, then came to this forum too late to post it. Would much prefer a trailer, but at least they officially announced it. Makes me feel more confident that it won't be delayed.
There's definitely some brand synergy going on with FUNi and Netflix making announcements at the same time for the same month.
Really hope that Netflix gets the dub
Toei just tweeted this 25 minutes ago. It's a bunch of pirate flags spelling out "DUB", with the message "coming soon". They're probably talking about the June 9 street date for the next One Piece DVDs, but they're kinda late getting in on that announcement. Could also be a Netflix reference, I suppose.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, just noticed that the Netflix "trailer" announcement uses the standard "blue" One Piece logo, and not the modified "gold" logo that FUNimation uses on all releases. Not sure it's that relevant to anything.
Weird. What announcement could they have now? Unless the coming soon is referencing not a new announcement but the June dates (Netflix, S10 DVD) given yesterday.
Maybe they're dropping the set early on FunimationNow? A man can dream.
EDIT: The account's last four post were about OP on Netflix and S10 DVD, so they're probably just celebrating the news or suggesting that Netflix will have the dub.

Oh, hey. I did something useful:
Assuming all sets will be 13 episodes, here are the new characters in each set. I only used the episode guide wikia, so I'm not sure if their appearance means they have a voice in that set. Would take way more effort to figure that out. I've bolded the ones I'm certain are voiced that set.
S10V1 (587): Caesar, Monet, Kin, Brownbeard
S10V2 (588-600): Yeti Cool Bros, Vergo
S10V3 (601-613): Machvise, Baby 5, Gladius, Lao G, Giolla, Momonosuke
S10V4 (614-625): Buffalo
S11V1 (626-638): Diamante, Sugar, Trebol, Fujitora, Gatz, Violet, Sai, Boo, Chinjao, Rebecca, Funk Bros, Elizabello II, Suleiman, Abdullah, Jeet, Orumbus, Cavendish, Bart, Maynard, Blue Gilly, Hack
EDITS: Changing list as people tell me which voices definitely are/aren't in the sets.

Well I can most certainly assure you that Pica will not have any voicework in Voyage One of Dressrosa, since his voice was intended to be a rather ridiculous reveal about half way into the arc…

Ah, yeah. I think he just shows up with the other commanders. I'll cut his name from that list.
I know with the pandemic going on, some things can't be helped, but just thinking about how long it will take for FUNi to get through releasing the sets for dressrosa give me a headache lol. I could see us not being done till 2022.

That’s far more likely than not, actually. The only hope is that they find safe enough conditions to get back to work by mid to late this year and that they continue releasing every 1-1.5 months.
This post from Toei Animation scared the fuck out of me.

Is there any precedent for two dubs continuing simultaneously? Would be interesting if Netflix had a new dub. And it sure would explain the two year silence—a battle over rights.
But yeah, it’s probably just poor wording on their part; they probably just meant PH.
Yeah, the picture that use in the post is from the first Punk Hazard episode.

Netflix posted a video preview (no dialogue)
The downside however is that NF probably has exclusivity so OP return to toonami (or television broadcast) is not likely at this point

One Piece returning to TV probably wasn't going to happen regardless
It’ll find more new viewers on Netflix than it ever would on Toonami. I get the nostalgia for having it on tv, but Netflix is the better choice for the success of Op in the US.

but they didn't say anything about new dub, and if it had one i assumed they would have mentioned it.
People didn't know about the new Netflix Eva dub cast until the day of release when they were hearing it for themselves. Though I don't think that'll happen here, I'm fairly confident Netflix wouldn't bother trying to redub what's still a very modern dub of such a long series.
One Piece is currently to my knowledge the ONLY show FUNimation has where we know HD Masters exist, and FUNi even uses them on digital services, but it hasn't gotten an HD Home video release.
Not to mention that they didn't even bother with stand-alone DVD release for the last few TV specials.
The only hopes for BDs I can think of now are very slim ones: either Funi releases the Collections as BDs (unlikely when these are the 'budget' versions) or they make BDs for Australasia/the UK as the parent company of the local distributors (maybe being a different region to Japan would help, but I don't think there's any precedent for Funi doing this).
There's no reason Netflix would spend the extra money to dub it when they can just buy Funimation's dub as they've done for countless other series. …except that they might have some sort of want for ownership of the OP brand since they're sinking a ton of money into the live action series (which will be ten episodes long to start).

That is not true. People knew there was going to be a redub for Netflix because several members of the old cast explicitly said there was going to be one and they werent going to be on it.

yeah. Eva premiered there June 2019 and Rei's VA posted in … late November 2018, that she wasn't going to be apart of it. So, what about 6 months early

It would be more productive to just buy the rights to the Funimation dub and pay them to keep making it.
There's no way a rush dub of the first 130 episodes is going to be great.

I agree. That said, we can't be sure until there's official confirmation. Also, we can't be sure it was "rushed."
I would have thought that by 2007 Toei would ask for ownership of the dub as part of their agreement with Funimation. I wonder if they'll use the modified credits/logos or if it'll just be the dub over the Japanese footage.
I hope Netflix has the funimation dub. That means funimation was paid money, which is great for them continuing the series. It’s possible that financial injection is what got them to start redubbing and sinking more resources into the dub.
Toei has the rights to the Funimation dub, not Funimation. Any licensing company that wants to buy the dub goes through Toei. MangaUK and Madman Australia don't buy the rights of the dub from Funimation, everything is from Toei.
I think the same is with netflix. Funimation is not benefiting if netflix has the Funimation dub.

Huh? Funimation doesn’t own the rights to their own dub? This doesn’t sound right to me at all. Source?
