Single player mode confirmed. I'm sold.

In my eyes, making a piranha plant the first DLC fighter makes it extremely easy to say no to the Fighter Pass. I mean, it's only a decent deal because it makes getting all five fighters a couple dollars cheaper, but if the first one is a piranha plant, I'm better off just buying them individually. Is it exciting anyone?

Piranha Plant owns, Geno gtfo

Wow uh…..things took quite a turn. umm.....UMMM?
! Okay so Grinch leak is false. Ken and Incineroar instead. I do like the latter's moves and they gelled together well in this fighting CGI trailer, so y'know, I'll take it. Some were VERY salty in the chat, but what can you do? Most of us liked the roster when K.Rool and Ridley came our way, throw in a few more.
I can't say I'm super thrilled at announcing DLC this early, but Nintendo would be stupid not to capitalize on it. Rip Isaac and Shadow, but there's still some more surprises on the horizon. Get some sleep Sakurai.
! Spirits Mode is…..something. I felt like it was the Orders mode, being a single player mode that's fun to tinker with but not super meaty, but there's an actual adventure behind it! It gives the trophy/etc. collection a greater sense of purpose, although i guess they're more like stickers between we have 2Ds renders?? Point is, I'm willing to give it a try. There's some event mode style stuff in there too.
! Online I mostly glossed over since I'm not gonna be a regular customer of the service but again, I'd be willing to tinker with it a few times. More customization is always nice.
! Piranha Plant is.....um.......I mean, it's free, but I thought Sakurai was just gonna say "fooled ya". It was the most bizarre thing of the direct, i can't even properly process it.
! Yay for Black Knight Assist Trophy. -
Piranha Plant is a more appealing old-school WTF character to me than Duck Hunt at least.

There's your SMRPG rep.

I had to try extremely hard to not disturb my coworkers at my reaction to Piranha Plant, and the thought of using it to beat up my friends had me grinning from ear to ear. Its so amazingly silly. Exactly why I've ever played Smash. Sooooooo imma say yes?
-
I have to say, I really wasn't a fan of this direct, but damn if I'm not a sucker for that adventure mode. The whole spirits mode thing was way too fleshed out to just be another sticker on the bottom of trophy deal. And fully voiced cutscene with talking Zelda? Sold.
Of course Kirby is the one to survive tho, Sakurai would never let his boy be Thanos'd.
-
Oh yeah, little Mac died.
-
The only good thing about this leak was the salt from Geno fans.

-
About the free dlc character, kinda has to be outside of the 5 planed right? It doesn't come with a stage, and if you get it for free then they can't (or fucking shouldn't) charge for it in the fighters pass.

Piranha Plant, Our Lord and Savior, is separate from the 5 DLC.

Cloud still feels like an outsider in this game. Like in a collaboration party everybody brings their best dishes and foods and drinks and everything for a lot of peoplele, and square brings a bag of chips and a six pack.

To me, Smash has always been a mascot fighter that offers players the chance to play as important characters in their favorite games. Even though I don't like Incineroar, I understand its inclusion, but it's a plant. Might as well put in the rotomdex or Link's mailbox from Wind Waker.

They brought two beers that they won't let anyone else drink and leave early without helping clean up the couch.
Also, "multiple music tracks" indicates that we're getting nothing out of Square for DLC.
-
I guess it(joke characters)'s just not for me. Oh well, still a pretty great roster.
-
I wouldn't be feeling nearly as salty if Sakurai didn't give Isaac the deconfirmed forever Assist Trophy status. I'd rather he be missing and possibly show up than in the game at all.
-
Kirby and his friends Shantae, Geno, and Revolver Ocelot are going to save the universe.
-
Good presentation. A lot of interesting stuff content wise.
My expectations were low concerning new characters. We got 3 and I liked what I saw. I certainly didn't expect PP but it seems fun.
No Isaac unfortunately for me but at least I know it now. That won't prevent me for pointlessly hoping for Felix as DLC :)
More seriously, about the 5 DLC characters, knowing that recent Switch characters couldn't make it, that a lot of them were deconfirmed today (spirits, costumes or AT) and that they won't be echoes my prediction would be, I'm expecting Elma to be among those 5.
For the others, I think we will definitely get another Namco character (Heihachi being quite likely).
That's all I have for now as very likely DLC. Hopefully the wait for the reveal of the content of the fighter pass won't be too long.
Edit : Removed Geno of my prediction (deconfirmed : spirit)

<let me="" be="" cruel="">it could be Geno, I'd guess they don't own the rights to Mario RPG songs.</let>

Mixed thoughts on the direct. Ken and Incineroar look fun, but are pretty weak as the last revealed base characters - should have held off on revealing K. Rool or Simon if you ask me, they would have been way more exciting as final reveals. Online looks…better, I guess? Still doesn't look ideal, though. We'll have to wait and see how well it actually works.
Oh man, so many souls crushed with the spirits, assist trophies, and mii costume reveals. Sorry to anyone who was really hoping for Isaac or Rex, I know they were really requested. Also wasn't expecting an Arms rep to only be an assist trophy, though I'm actually kind of ok with that. Arms is fun, but not quite enough of a smash hit (heh-heh) to guarantee a fighter if you ask me, so this is an alright compromise.
Totally was expecting the DLC announcement, and it looks like all 5 will be pretty significant characters if each is getting its own stage and music tracks. There's still some hope for some of the more requested characters! Also, I don't care what anyone else says - Piranha Plant is an amazing and hilarious addition. Every new Smash Bros seems to get at least one new WTF character, and this is definitely the one for Ultimate.
Spirits looks interesting. Kind of like a combination of Adventure, Subspace, and Events. I like what we saw for the most part, especially the story tease at the end. I know they said it's more about fun than story, but I hope we get at least a couple more cutscenes, because that first one was really cool. Also, the main theme has lyrics?!

The bara furry with the flaming crotch is the character no 69. It couldn't have been any other.

Its one of the most iconic creatures in the entire Mario canon, has been a playable character before, and makes for a unique fighter.
But beyond all that: you asked if it anyone was excited, and I certainly am. Even if you don't personally understand it, I would absolutely play the heck out of Piranha plant.
-
I love that the running theme for all the reveal trailers of characters so far has been Nintendo characters brutally dying, then the story mode opens with mass death

Oh, the main protagonist of Eternal Darkness is in the website, as a ZSSamus Spirit.

I appreciate the return of the circa-1997 non-Sugimori Pokemon stock art, it takes me back.

I like it in the sense that it's the biggest WTF, and that is it's purpose, smash needs its wtf characters to be smash. But this will be taken as an insult ot almost all the factions (The Waddle Dees, the Waluigis, the Genos, etc)
But on it's moveset, it's presentation, and what kind of characters it opens the doors to? I'm not sold on the consequences of letting a generic mook plant into the battle.

About the World of Light stuff: Thank you Shulk for giving everybody a head start on their inminent death.
There is kinda of a lot of gacha mechanics on the spirits mode (sans paying for them), and no intention of porting it to an app.
I saw one of the many leaks and stuff that claimed the return of stickers, but never the retirement of trophies. I now wonder what we collect out of classic mode.

Ok, gonna write some thoughts to process this. Overall that was disappointing.
Ken and Incineroar would have been exciting, if it weren't for asshole leakers insisting on them for months now. What could have been an amusing surprise was instead the harbinger of the darkest timeline.
I strongly dislike everything they showed about spirits for a ton of reasons:
- It's a cute way to combine trophies with single-player, but it just winds up making all these characters feeling like Brawl stickers. There's no real impact to seeing these characters or having them "in your team". It's like if I wanted to have a pokemon with me in real life, so I carry a sticker of them in my backpack.
- Trophies existed as a cool incentive to do different things in the game. That's gone now. We still have the wall of lamentations, sure, but the reward is… a picture? I mean... literally anyone could just super easily take any picture so what's the point? Fuck, actually... can we still take pictures?
- This mode has the same exact problem that Smash 4 single player had. Basically, single player content for a fighting game should actually help you get better in that fighting game, teach you good habits and movements and all that. That's why break the targets is great, and board the platforms, and home-run contest. But fuck it all those are gone.
Instead we have the same thing as Smash 4 where the advent of "customizable stats" means every single fight is a different story. Sure, I could get used to, say, Ridley's physics by playing Spirits with him, but then I'll also get used to bullshit stats from my spirits and get used to bullshit enemy stats from THEIR spirits and items and all that. It's also not real progression if I could do the same exact shit nearly every fight, and in the meantime my spirit levels up and my character gets buffed while I learn jack shit. - In the middle of this, I get to walk around the weirdly artistic map doing random shit. It's cute but... it honestly feels like filler in between fights that doesn't actually do anything. It's like the overworld mode in Mario + Rabbids, there to make it feel immersive but instead just getting in the way. And at least in M+R there was purpose to moving around. I would need to see more of the overworld to know what exactly is the point, but we barely got any look at that.
- This whole bullshit where each spirit has different stats and you can rotate them and there's skill trees and there's a bullshit mini-game to "kill" the evil trophy and you can buy spirits with in-game currency and....
WHY IS THIS A MOBILE GAME. Also, do we seriously need skill trees and stats and battle triangles in fucking Smash Brothers? Do we seriously need more fucking systems? Goddamn Sakurai, stop adding a million systems and mini-games to every game you touch.
So, about music. All the stages are instantly unlocked but we still have to buy the actual music? Fuck man, that's going to take a year. At the least I fucking hope that I can specifically buy the songs I want. If that shit is randomized again I'm gonna be pissed.
They talk about online again, and again that shit kills the direct.
No, I don't want to use your stupid phone app.
No, your bullshit global smash power doesn't mean jack shit to me. Being number 123,252 doesn't tell me jack shit. It doesn't tell anyone anything. Someone have a higher number than me, is that because they play more or have a higher success ratio or maybe they just played more recently and there's more players now? Fucking useless number.
Also remember all those great modes you talked about last direct? Can I play them online? NO IDEA. Squads? Smashdown? How many people can fit in a lobby? Tournaments?
ALSO ALSO, how does the matchmaking actually prioritize GSP, Preferences AND Distance? Does this mean in Japan I'll be able to constantly find good matches while in bumfuck, USA people might as well give up? Because that's exactly what that sounds like. But hey, that's just another symptom of Nintendo being fucking incompetent at online. Now, DLC.
You have a plan for DLC and you doom characters like Isaac, Spring Man, Ribbon Girl and Rex to ATs and Mii costumes? God fuck man.
Oh look, there's splatoon 2 mii costumes... why not just make these extra skins for the inklings man? Have you considered people would love skins for the ACTUAL fighters?
And then, you introduce the concept of an echo fighter and then when talking about DLC you're all "nah man, no echo fighters this time" like they're polished turds. Why the fuck don't you toss in extra DLC fighters by adding echo fighters? It's a fucking freebie.
You also do all this fucking massacre of fans dreams with all these bullshit ATs and spirits, AND THEN you decide to show Piranha Plant. What the actual goddamn fuck man. Waluigi? Yea, leave that man as an assist trophy. But PIRANHA PLANT, PEOPLE WILL LOVE THAT.
I mean, yea, it's fucking hilarious and unique and that's great, but why the ever-living fuck did they think the best timing to reveal this would be after the murder of everything fans dreamed of? Terrible pacing man, you should have just saved K. Rool for the end of this direct. I also find it dickish to have an actual fighter be exclusive as a pre-order bonus and presumably extra cost to people that don't. That's a dickish pre-order bonus. And now for another year of "which character will it be?" in which a million fake leakers will continue thriving and random-ass third parties like Minecraft Steve get in before goddamn Dixie Kong or Rhythm Heaven or Banjo Kazooie. I'm calling it.
edit: also, the fucking treehouse plays like 3 or 4 matches, NO ONE PICKS K. ROOL, and then they switch to pokemon let's go. Seriously man? Oh, but they'll come back for more!! Well fuck you bitches, people have work now so thanks a lot.
-
How can you not love this motherfucker?
-
Incineroar is for the children, brother.
-
Haven't seen the trailer so I know nothing about Spirits or anything. I'm at work, but because of the Leak I decided "Screw it, just read up on it" and have been.
I really liked the leak because of Geno and Banjo, but I never got too attached to it. No matter how real it seemed, I always remembered it could be fake, so I'm not bothered by this.
I'm pretty happy with the roster we're getting.
Incineroar is neat. Figured there'd be a Gen 7 Pokémon and was surprised that leak didn't have one.
Ken as an Echo is so incredibly obvious pick, but odd that Shadow isn't. that seems like a no-brainer.
Phirana Plant is out of nowhere but seems like it'd be fun.
5 Characters in DLC? Ok. Did we get confirmation that this is all the DLC there will ever be, or is this just like the "First Wave"?
Either way:
Dixie Kong
Geno
Banjo
Chorus Kids
Bowsette
IsaacGimme that and I declare Perfect roster.
Also, is there a nice high-res EVERYONE IS HERE Banner that includes the new charas? My work one is out of date. It's still missing Isabelle even lol.

Isaac was shown as an assist trophy so he's probably deconfirmed. Chorus Kids are a Spirit but who knows if that counts as deconfirmation for DLC characters.

Smash that shift + f5 to get it to reload. But the website is probably overloaded by people doing that.
No surprises under pokemon summons, just a few returning ones.
Music is the lyrics version of the theme and the Su&Mo battle theme.
And after all of this, the ones untouched by Thanos are Geno and Banjo&Kazooie.
No idea on who could be the DLCs, but for maximum salt it will include one Fire Emblem sword user from the new game.
There is at least some tiering in online with the masters division or something, the "We'll pay extra atention to this one in balancing the game" one.
-
Aren't Banjo and Kazooie owned by Microsoft now? Is there some reason that so many people have expected them to be available that I'm not aware of?
-
The more I think about the spirits-adventure thing, the more I feel it will be a chore… hopefully I'm wrong.
Oh and I just remembered All-star mode is now a glorified multi-man smash... urgh!
This is actually the first time that the "main" single-player mode is seeming super tedious. Like literally nothing but a big grindfest that combines the worst parts of its inspirations (event matches, buffed up amiibo fighters, collecting mechanics, etc). It really does seem like some crummy free-to-play gacha micromanagement slog so far. The replacement of trophies is crushing to me because I was always fascinated by them, and the "replacement" is nowhere near satisfying by comparison. Other than music (which I hope isn't a pain to unlock…) it was what I really was excited to collect.
I guess I can still hope for some cool challenges, but it also depends on what other modes we still get. They seemingly even fucked up All-star as you mentioned, but what about even basic stuff like Home Run Contest? Sigh.
-
Aren't Banjo and Kazooie owned by Microsoft now? Is there some reason that so many people have expected them to be available that I'm not aware of?
1: He's a major part of Nintendo history. Rare was a BIG Part of Ninty in the SNES and especially N64 Era.
2: Microsoft has made comments to the effect that "We'd be cool letting Banjo bein Smash"
3: Nintendo and Microsoft have been hyping up crossplay between their systems and fostering an air of "We get along and are friends". In a way, this was kindof a big Fuck you to Sony who wasn't allowing Cross Play until after this pressure got put on them, but still.
