Lol as a fan of the series as you claim yourself you should actually play all of them to understand at least the basics.
Tone it down with the self-satisfied "True Fan" attitude. Opting to focus on the mainline games in a series is a perfectly valid approach, especially for a self-proclaimed more casual fan like Supernova. You shouldn't need to play all the nonnumbered pre/inter/sequels to keep track of the main plot.
A non-comprehensive list of things that'll be alien to people who just played KH I and II:
- Who is Xehanort?
- Why are there so many Xehanorts?
- Who is Aqua, Ven, Terra and Vanitas?
- What is the Chi-blade?
- Who is Xion?
- Why is everyone alive again?
- What is the deal with 13 darknesses and 7 lights?
-
I'd call BBS a main line game, even if not numbered. I'd guess that they will explain again the DDD mess in III
-
BBS is absolutely crucial, yet it is also something you've only played if you own a PSP or bought the confusingly titled "2.5 HD remix", which is not simply a HD update of KHII with extra content. It is also a game that barely features the main characters of the preceding titles, and which is the fourth release, yet the first in the chronology. Its totally fair for more casual fans to pass it by; In any other series but Kingdom hearts, it would never be "required reading".
-
BBS (and 2.8) are currently the only KH games I haven't played.
The only thing that sucks is that while my brother has an Xbone for KH3, it'd be really sweet to buy 2.5 ReMix….which is PS3/4 only.
-
I was this close of going full "I'm playing all kh again" last week, if it wasn't because DDD is not available online, I'd be all over that.
-
I don't have DDD anymore, but I did beat it on the 3DS. It was pretty fun, but the story made me want to hit my head with a coconut.
And I don't just mean all the time travel nonsense, I'm personally really bothered with the Musketeer world, like it's fun but conceptually, it makes no sense to me. So….France became Disney?? Alternate versions of Donald, Goofy, and Mickey exist? If Donald and Goofy went with Sora to that world, would there be some kind of temporal paradox?
-
I blame back to the future. There are no such thing as temporal paradoxes (paradoxii?) unless the author specifically states it. Time travel isn't a thing, when it shows up you need to establish the rules on it, and defaulting to back to the future is a mistake.
Default to futurama instead.
Besides, aren't those like "dream" worlds? The worlds and memories of worlds destroyed by heartless that didn't restore themselves by virtue of plot like the lion king and beauty and the beast?
Speaking of convoluted:

Aqua: At last…Walt's will...His Magic Kingdom...is complete. Somewhere out there, I know he's laughing. We are rodents, drawn by a man. Unless the light is put out, the DARKNESS cannot be erased. So long as there is light, erasing DARKNESS will do no good. GASP. I...am Oswald's doppelganger. And you are his. Just like Walt. You're...pretty good!

Damn I need a refersher of this story.

I had the opportunity to play the game at Japan Expo in France.
The demo consisted of two segments : the fight against the rock titan in Olympus Colosseum and looking for the missing toys in the new Toy Box world.
gameplay :
the command menu consists of attack, magic, items and link….I am stupid and completed the demo without trying link :'(
Attack uses a level 0 command style to do basic combos, the new thing is that pressing the right arrow lets you change your level 0 command style !!! Yes there are different level 0 command style.
Magic is the same as usual. With the difference that you can glide on your own ice and use the wind to jump higher. It uses the magic points the same as KH2 (auto refill when empty)
Didn't use items.
The focus jauge is used for shotlock. As usual you use it to target as many enemies as you can. But when you are ready, you can press different butons instead of just X. This will result in different attacks :).
As in Aqua's episode, using different techniques will let you get a special attack like mega magic, changing command style (as in birth by sleep) or team up with your party members to launch a coop attack. When you unlock one you don't have to use it right away, you have a time limit to use it. You can even unlock several at the same time and choose the order to use them.
Sora can run on walls (horizontally or vertically) and it really feels great. Much easier than in dream drop distance.Good points :
- the game looks amazing ! as usual, flawless animation during the fights, amazing lighting effects on the magic, some attacks even have temporary effect on the environment
- the fights are ridiculously dynamic, you keep changing command style every 5 seconds and every new styles is more badass and visually impressive than the previous one
- the areas's size are pretty big, kind of like Dream Drop Distance. But Sora's acrobatics are much easier to control. No weird dash or wall jumping and pole grabbing, just run on a wall to climb it and go all the way to the top. It's simple but much better IMO
- Sora has so much stuff in his move set that you never end up smashing the X button on the attack command because you ran out of focus or magic. You always find a new move to try, and they are all awesome.
- the fight against the titan is completely different and pretty badass. Yes! Even the part on the magic train is actually badass. And it's optional, kind of like using Pegasus against the Hydra in KH 2
- when Buzz and Woodie join your party, they stay here at all times along Donald and Goofy ! You have 4 team mates ! You don't have to choose two of them specifically.
Bad Points
- I know I will not mind in the actual game, but the demo's cutscenes were waaaaaay tooooo looooong. I came to play the game! Not watch a movie. I had to skip them at some point.
- Loading time between rooms is waaaaaay toooooo loooooong. Felt like the old games.
- I said the fights are very satisfying...but they are also somehow frustrating. Sora does a lot of amazing move...but it doesn't feel like you are responsible for it. The absence of tutorial in the demos makes it impossible to know how you unlock a command style or a coop move. You just press triangle to use them whenever you unlock one, but I don't know why I unlocked one....it's toooo easy. You get rewarded with amazingly powerful attacks by playing casually. I somehow managed to summon a giant tower or a pirate ship...but I don't know how to reproduce that move cause I don't know how I did it the first time. Hopefully they made those easier to use in the demo so that player can enjoy everything and they will be harder to use in the real game.
- As I just said Sora uses incredibly powerful attacks without breaking a sweat...but the enemies can't handle them, they are too weak compared to Sora. Before you know it you can launch a mega magic or change style, or do a coop move.....but everyone around you is already dead because of the first shotlock. If strong moves are so easy to use in the final game you should definitely play in the hardest difficulty.
-Voice acting and animation during the cutscenes (that I didn't skip) are average as usual

new reveal trailer just dropped!
and the full one comes out on the 18th during TGS.

please let steve buscemi reprise his role
Really excited to see more of these worlds! Never saw Big Hero 6 but even that looks pretty cool. And the Gummi Ships!

Big Hero 6 was a fun movie. Although it shouldn't have beat How to Train Your Dragon 2 for the Oscar.

Mothafuckin Ultros Gummi Ship.

I love the bee heartless.

The clock is the best thing. The hands are pointing at 13 (yes a clock with 13) and 7 signifying the 13 darknesses Vs the 7 lights
-
Plot Twist: As per the cover art, we've been playing as/collecting the 13 points of Darkness and half of of the 13 Norts of Darkness are actually the points of Light

So last night after years of mishaps, I've finally beaten Kingdom Hearts 2 and I loved it. The game is easier than the first, which for me is great. Funnily enough, I've seen people not liking the Pride Lands, but I really loved it, but I might be biased since Lion King is my favorite animated Disney movie. Though, I was constantly wondering where Zazu was. I've also seen people talk about Donal being useless, but I found his healing useful. I usually kept him in my party and tossed Goofy out for whatever Disney character came along. At least until I found out I need to train the forms to get stuff like High Jump and Air Dodge, which just frustrated me since I was trying to get all the puzzle pieces lol
I've started BBS for the first time and so far I'm not liking the battle system with the command deck nearly as much. The camera also seems to be too close to the characters and the font in the reports book makes the entries harder to read, because it feels so claustrophobic. I wish they would'Ve fixed that for the HD version. Also, the board game is weird and from the little I've played, I don't care for it. Too slow and the hud covers so much of it.
Also, the Universed are weird and just there. I've had no explanation so far of them. I've finished up Snow White, which had a weird abrupt ending and started Cinderella.

Hmm i'm guessing you started with Ventus don't know if you know this but BBS its better play in certain order Terra , Ventus and Aqua you get full story that way ,its save file for each character and you get extra chapters after you complete all three.
You don't need to touch the Command Board at all but you get nice abilities from it and train the ones you have ,the other minigames that appear you only have to play once unless you want Xehanort letters ,i find them to be necessary to fully understand story .
Unversed will get explain on certain character story mostly.
Advice i have is focus on learning auto ability's like reducing cooldown.
Just warning the optional bosses are quite hard specially with Terra. -
Even when factoring in all three characters Snow White land has a big anitclimax, and gives the impression of being cut down due to time constraints

Just warning the optional bosses are quite hard specially with Terra.Ah. I thought I'd read years ago that Ventus was the easiest and Terra was the hardest, so I thought I'd start with the easiest and work my way up. Kinda makes sense to me. I keep hearing about the bad things Terra is doing from other people, and I was thinking the truth of what's going on with him is shown to me last, so it stays a mystery while I play as Ventus and Aqua.
I'm already up to Deep Space, so I don't think I'll start over. The ice cream mini-game with Huey, Dewey, and Louie was infuriating to me lol I get a "Good" and I still fail. Took me too long to finish that part.
I haven't been using the command board since, but I have been melding and training my commands to get new abilities, so far I've focused on HP ups, combo ups and faster recharges.
By the way, do I have to do the prologue again when I want to play the others?
@Daz:

My problem was that I didn't even realize the level was done. I just talked to the old lady, she said she saw Terra and then I was back in space. Not even "Well, I guess I'm done here" or, "Terra said he's leaving this place". She just says she doesn't know where he went. I didn't even get to explore the area she was in until I returned to look for stickers. Other worlds didn't have that problem.
-
By the way, do I have to do the prologue again when I want to play the others?
No ,you go to same worlds but to other zones that other characters can't access overall.
Just keep save file for each character be careful not overwrite a save file (you need this for extra content) and one for choosing the character .That's not worse minigame at least not for me , the words fruit ball makes me shudder.
Aqua is hardest to start with (quite frail) but becomes powerful later on, Terra is just slow and has meager magic , Ventus is the easiest to use from beginning but lacks power by end of it.
If you want tackle the extra content(optional bosses) go with Aqua.
Ah with Terra if you want Xehanort letters you have to complete arena if i'm remembering right ,that is going involve minigames besides fighting. -
-
I beat Ventus' story last night. I got used to the changed systems and enjoyed them, though not as much as KH2's. But, it did get me to use magic more. Thundaga was my most used thing in the end. It was great to kill groups and it let me use Rhythm Mixer. The last boss ended up being pretty easy since I overleveled to level 42.
I've decided to go with my original plan and I started as Aqua now. I was really surprised by how different her version of Cinderella's world is compared to Ventus'. It feels weird to be so weak again and I miss my high jump and super glide.
I am annoyed that despite grinding for a while, I killed less than 3000 Unversed. I need 10,000 for the secret ending xO.

As long as I don't have to do an even harder ice cream rhythm thing in the arena, I'm good lol. -

As long as I don't have to do an even harder ice cream rhythm thing in the arena, I'm good lol.He is slow overall, attack speed and movement(but his dodge helps this ,its more of dash really) but he does more damage with physical attacks then other two.
Hmm for story reasons mostly i would advice leaving Aqua for last can't really elaborate on this for spoiler reasons.
Oh you probably already notice this but Aqua can block an attack from any direction(barrier around her) so block with healing its really good. Why do you need kill 10000 unversed? What difficulty did you choose?
Hope its proud because if it is standard ouch you have to complete report section(mickey mouse icon will appear when its complete) with each character to unlock the secret ending. -
I played them in paralel, so to keep the disney worlds connected, and avoid the power wipslash that you are experiencing.
-
Command Decks are love, Command Decks are life. Playing Kingdom Hearts III without them will personally make me feel more inhibited than satisfied.

Complete the Final Episode, Complete the Sticker Album with 140 points for all characters & Obtain the Keyslinger Trinity Trophy.
Keyslinger Trophy is:
Proof you have taken out 9,999 Unversed.
I played them in paralel, so to keep the disney worlds connected, and avoid the power wipslash that you are experiencing.
Eh, it's fine. I already have high jump and air dash back. And I leveled up Thunder to Thundaga as soon as possible.
-
Keyslinger Trophy
Ah that you don't need worry about that all that much since all three characters contribute to that anyway Aqua will help with that no problem.
Hmm yeah i read now that in Final Mix they made requirements easier to accomplish for the secret ending, it was way more time consuming before .

One day, my fever dream of Lance Bass returning to voice Sephiroth will come to fruition

KH1 had all-around great casting for the Final Fantasy characters and then KH2 happened and they all got replaced with ??????????????

I completed BBS today! I really enjoyed, though I did start getting tired by the time I was playing through with Terra and had to take breaks for days. I think I liked Ventus the most. Dude is just trying to make friends lol Terra's a big baby highly reminiscent of Anakin. He even had the "What have I done?!" line after striking down Eraqus. Aqua is fine. I took me a while to realize her actress is Thea from Arrow, but then I couldn't unhear it anymore.
So does Roxas look like Ventus because his light is in Sora?
I also did the special episode. It was cool to fight Heartless again. The boss was kind of easy, especially once I went into Rhythm Mixer mode.
And I've started DDD. So far I like it. I've finished Traverse Town. Hearing the music again was nice. I love how fast and agile the characters are. Having the roll and air dash from the start is a blessing. The Flowmotion stuff is fun, too. I'm not sure about the Drop stuff. What happens when it's empty? Do I get a game over or do I just switch to the other character? If it's the latter what happens in (boss) fights? It kind of feels like it hampers exploration since I'm always worrying about it.
And since I complained about it in BBS, I was happy to see the font in the reports section is more in line with the mainline games.
-
The only thing stoping me from an unhealthy kh binge is that dream drop distance is not a digital title, and the price tag of a PS4.
And that my parents are living with me and them asking me why I have "four Nintendos" is not a talk I Wana have.

No gameover, you just change to the other character. It doesn't matter what you're doing, you drop.
But there are items and such that can restore you drop bar. You're kinda supposed to strategize when your bar will reach zero so that you're not caught by surprise or break your flow.
