@Nobodyman:
Bummer. I had no idea it was doing poorly in the ratings. Well, it was good while it lasted.
It’s a bit more complicated than numbers went down. Disney XD also gets nowhere near the viewers of Disney Channel because fewer packages carry it; look at Gravity Falls season 1 (where all the episodes first appeared on DC) and season 2 (where all but a few episodes first showed up on XD). That drop is not because GF became less popular, but because the first channel that aired new episodes was different. That’s what happened with Ducktales; the big spikes and dips in ratings changes are because of channel changes.
Ducktales, like quite a few shows on XD, does get aired on the Disney Channel. One of the new episodes is scheduled to show there this Sunday for example and did another last Sunday. How good are the numbers then; don’t know, probably nothing special, but that would help answer some questions and it’s not like it stopped airing on DC.
And honestly, most of cable is just struggling in general. A new show on CN will rarely to get more 0.5 in the ratings whereas a decade ago, even non-hits could get above 1.0. Disney channel used to get 2 million viewers in 2014, it’s about a quarter of that five years later. Streaming eats a lot of viewers who don’t want to pay extra for cable and like to watch shows on their own schedule. Heck. AT&T is struggling to sell Direct TV (to help pay off their debt); not a good sign. I have no clue how well Ducktales does on Disney+ but… the fact the Darkwing reboot is heading there probably means that Disney wants to test some waters.
To me the biggest sign Ducktales is in trouble isn’t the ratings per say, but the lack of reruns. There’s nothing on Disney Channel and only an hour or two on the weekends for XD. Not a good thing given how important reruns are on kid’s networks.
