I'm excited that this is coming out so soon!

I'm kind of worried, especially with the "expansion card packs released every month!!" are they going to be random packs and you might end up with copies of the same character or having to buy multiple if one character is rare to get. Also the fact that some can only be gotten by purchasing issues through the magazine editions of Shonen Jump or through events. Making it kind of difficult for foreign collectors, especially the event and magazine only ones which could be sold for higher prices on ebay or proxy buying sites.
-
Since it says that it will have information from all the past post timeskip arcs including the Whole Cake Island arc, I do hope that means we will get the entire Charlotte Family list revealed when this comes out on September 4th.
-
So, I like the idea. But there's a huge BUT. This will never be completely localised, as they already talk about events and magazine exclusives. Also, I do prefer a one book databook.

I get the feeling characters that appear in the manga (and novels that are in canon like the Ace one) will be part of the expansion packs, the cards that are part of events and magazine exclusives might likely center around characters that appear in movies that Oda is involved with. It's also possible these cards might be re-released in future expansion packs.

Considering that the binder will come with 32 starter cards that might not cover all of the New World arcs, depending on the content that might only cover Fishman Island and possibly Punk Hazard initially Dressrosa, Zou, and Whole Cake Island might be expansion packs.

Really? This databook which was the perfect opportunity to finally reveal the entire Charlotte Family all at once on September 4th, but now you're saying that might not even happen. I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, eh so far I'm not liking these whole card files that they're doing.
-
This sounds like something that'll eventually be compiled into a complete set of cards. I'd hope so at least, anyways.
Especially for the sake of collectors. Can you imagine having to deal with scalpers for the cards that were bundled in the magazine, and never seen again?
-
This new format doesn't convince me
I hope monthly expansion packs won't be random packs, and I hope too there won't be exclusive cards in events like Jump Festa becouse scalpers will make a fortune…
I hope there will be more classic Databooks in the future like Red, Blue, Yellow or Green

Yup, all valid ones to be certain, that said I'm sure you'll all be pleasantly surprised/perfectly fine with the final outcome.
Re: special unique cards, it's not like y'all aren't going to scan 'em and make them available for printout anyway. If anything it makes it easier for you.

Well, you are part of the staff (lucky), so you're likely privy to information on the fanbook that you can't divulge to us right now due to legal reasons. But because your part in this project I trust your judgment that'll we will be "pleasantly surprised/perfectly fine with the final outcome."
Especially the fact that you are talking several people on this forum, who are foreign buyers who have an interest in this book.
-
I like the idea of a card for every character. There are a LOT of characters to go around if you count the obscure ones.
Are they eventually going to reach more than 1,000 cards? And is Oda going to draw each one himself or will they be taken from the manga and colored? -
Ok so Im having a bit of trouble reading this. How large are these cards because im imagining there might not be a ton of room so are these like trading cards? But maybe without random chance draws like a pack of pokemon cards. Huh.
With the concern about scanning, people collecting these are after authenticity, the info will be available online as it always is early but it being copied on some cheap paper isnt gonna be what people want either
-
According to the official website Here , the Vivre Card book has 32 cards once you buy it as a standard .
The price for the book will be about 11-12$ + Tax
According to another source , the expansion card pack will be monthly and there will be more than 400 cards ( characters ) each year ! .
-
I'll fucking buy this shit. These words alone are so tempting.
-
So the first card of the Vivre card book is decided to be for Monkey D Luffy ! and we can see that there are 4 digits (0001) so we can expect more than 1000 cards already !
-

The picture on page 3 of this thread says the binder is 208 mm x 150 mm in inches and I might be off by this is 8 in x 5 in so the binder itself is a bit bigger than the other databooks so the cards might be smaller.
That's been my concern as well I did translate the bulleted sentences one said an expansion pack would be released each month (as well as ones available through events and magazines), but having them be random packs wouldn't be good choice in the long run, because the cards themselves don't have any additional use outside of them being used to build your own fanbook. It's not a card game like Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, or the various carddass games in Japan. So they might be expansion packs in the same vain as Cards Against Humanity or What Do You Meme?
However I came across this while trying to find any information for trying to pre-order this:
It says this book is "not considered a databook", any help as to why they're saying this is much appreciated.
-
but having them be random packs wouldn't be good choice in the long run
I agree, that wouldn't be a good choice.
-
This seems like a neat idea, but I'm not sure I'm a fan. We've gotten all the manga databooks here in Germany and I don't see this coming over. Hopefully, we eventually get another databook.
-
What meaningfull informations can we expect from this data book ?
-
Something else I was thinking about is cards for characters who have different forms, which granted isn't as widespread, but several do exist. Such as Luffy's Gear Fourth forms, Zoan-type devil fruit users (especially with Chopper and his numerous forms), Tamago's two additional forms from his devil fruit, or Caesar Clown's Shinokuni form (although that could just get a picture on the back of his card).
Or if two characters could be counted as one such as the Funk brothers or Abdullah and Jeet (especially the latter two since aside from height and weapon difference neither displayed any unusual abilities). Or Cavendish and Farul, will they get separate cards or will the latter just be featured on Cavendish's card but never get his own? (Which could also go for Doc Q and Stronger as well when they eventually reappear in the story).
-
Is there any examples of these cards, by chance?
-
Yeah! The style was revealed along with the cover.
-
I assume there is more information on the back of the card and the front is just for the character's general features.
There is not much text to describe the main character on this side is what I mean. -
Well, some universal factoids could be: Height, Age, Where they are from, Bounty/Marine Rank, things like that.
-
A picture of Monkey D Luffy card inside Vivre Card book :
!
-
Looks like Luffy is gonna be used as the reference for character's size comparison.
-
This databook will be worth it for me if all of the cards have older concept art and interesting history tidbits.
-
I might have found the ISBN for this fanbook:

You can pre order Vivre Card now in Amazon Japan!!!
-
^
It is written in the Amazon link コミック: 64ページ which means the book has 64 pages .I did write two days ago that the book has 32 as a standard , so this means each card has details on both sides which means 2 pages in one card ! 32 x 2 = 64
-
I noticed on Luffy's card that it lists the arcs he's been in (although it refers to them as episodes) and last one it lists appears to be Wano. I'm guessing that this binder will likely cover everything from the Fishman Island arc to the Wano arc. It's also likely they might release another binder since there is likely a limit to the number of cards the current binder can hold.
-
So Luffy is exactly as tall as Luffy. Can't say I'm surprised.
-
I emailed a guy in Japan I often do business with when I can't find an item through a proxy buying site, and he said based on the measurements on the ad (205 x 150mm) that the binder will likely be the size of an A4 book or a bit bigger.

So it is bigger than the other databooks, but still handbook sized. Although based on the size one can assume that the cards hopefully won't be in random packs as myself and a few others had feared. Hopefully they'll make a video covering the cards, so we know what material they'll be made out of, just to know how durable they'll be.

For example Koby was "Coby" for several chapters until his ship's flag gave us an official spelling or how Sarkies was "Sarquiss" until an exhibit gave us the official English spelling.

After the ahem Levely, I'll be taking all romanisations with a grain of salt. Likely they've had more time to edit and sort out this book than the weekly chapters, but that still burned out a lot of the faith I had in them on that front.

It could go back to Reverie in the volume release, this wouldn't be the first time a mistake was made in the magazine release (or changing something initially introduced from the chapter release to the volume release). Such as Crocodile regaining missing hand in the cover story or Katakuri's Devil Fruit originally being a Logia in the weekly chapter than changing it to a "Special" Paramecia in the volume release.
Also the cards could still reveal the names of the Devil Fruits for characters like Kin'emon, Kanjuro, Issho, Gallete, Mont-d'Or, and Opera (although for Kin'emon and Kanjuro it'll likely be revealed in the current arc, assuming their cards aren't released in an expansion pack before than).

While author's intent take priority 99.9% of the time, non English speaker trying to do English does NOT always take priority for an English audience. "How fast the time fleets" for instance is clearly wrong. Franky has been spelled "Flanky" here and there. And names like "Shiryu" being spelled "Shilliew". Or the recent Reverie thing.
Non Japanese names are the one case where Oda saying something is spelled a certain way doesn't actually mean its right, and the translator might need to take some liberties for localization. Especially any names loaded with L's or R's.
(And on top of that, translating between languagues is always an inexact science anyway. There can be multiple technically correct ways to do it. In Dragonball for instance, Goku, Gokuu, and Gokuh are all technically correct.)

Except Shiryu is a japanese name, not english. You would expect Oda to get that one right if he really wanted the character to be named that. I mean, he clearly went out of his way to make the name particularly not japanese both in the romanization and the way it is written (since it is in katakana rather than hiragana or kanji like the other "japanese named" characters).
Not arguing about your whole point, just this particular case because it is a pet peeve of mine.

Since One Piece is worldwide known I would kind of expect that the editors would look out for the romanisation. Dont get me wrong, I do not really care about a certain "romanisation" which the one piece wiki considers to be true than rather consistency in the romanisation which is totally off. It is a publishers job to spell check things and to look out for formal consistency.
