Huh well he did kinda say he was opened to continuing it, so yeah alright. Just please plan your plots better dude, I like FT, but even I roll my eyes at some of the developments.
Fairy Tail Series IV Discussion

Who wanna bet that literally nothing will change writing wise compared to ft. Just some new chars that look like all the previous ones and friendship asspulls galore.
-
Well, can't say I'm surprised. A manga drawing machine like him would hardly rest for too long.
Maybe he used all this time to plan the plot in advance? :ninja:

As long as the plot thickens I'll be pleased.

^
That is guaranteed. xD -
Magic was actually created by a race of white aliens.
-
Time for Mashima's new, original manga.
-
Wow. As if Happy and Plue wasn't enough, he didn't even bothered changing Erza.
-
He could put it at least a little effort in making the characters look different…..I'll probably pass on it I haven't even read Fairy Tale in ages.
-
Honestly if you posted that and said it was a Fairy Tail spin off in the same universe, I'd believe it.
-
Only 3 designs look like characters that haven't shown up in Fairy Tail. Is this new? It's not Fairy Tail Z? And it's just about their kids?
-
I have zero hopes that he learned anything from fairy tails mistakes, considering it's fans hail it as a fantastic piece of art and encourage him to do more friendship ass pulls and just overall terrible writing.
And yeah, zero creativity to come up with slightly new character designs. All of them will basically be copies of fairy tail mooks.
-
He's more or less done the same with Fairy Tail after Rave.

Can it really be considered "mistakes" when it was such a comercial success though?
I'll probably give a hard pass on this. People voted with their wallets that what Mashima was doing was the right thing. I think it's dreadfull, so I have 0 hopes for whatever he's doing next. -
That image
It's like someone did really good knock off fanfiction.
-
Yeesh Mashima what's with you and the Plue character. He's in virutally everything of his works (even that Cococa pilot). Guess it's like a calling card to him I don't know.
Otherwise, yeah meh. I'm guessing this is suppose to be Natsu and Lucy's kids or something. Maybe an alternate universe deal ala UQ Holder hence the similar looks. He did say it was a spin-off. Honestly I'll check it out regardless, if only cause I still love Mashima's works and to see if having a fresh new series has made him better as a writer.
-
He said that he is becoming "a little confused" due to simultaneously working on his new manga (seen right), Fairy Tail, and an unnamed project
I think this is supposed to be the new Fairy Tail storyline, the title is just mistaken.

Let me pose this as a thought experiment: How many Fairy Tail characters have to appear in his new original work for it become a "Fairy Tail storyline?" As far as I can tell, it's already a Fairy Tail spinoff.

First chapter of the new series for anyone who wants to get into this whole thing again, for some reason.
Anyway, I think we can all agree that this does not need a new thread.
-
I read that entire chapter.
I just…I can't even.
I'm gonna try to not bring in Fairy Tail's baggage into this new series. It's a fresh start, and maybe Mashima has learned some lessons. His work ethic and dedication is still his most admirable quality.
But considering the designs feel so much like a fucking knock off, this is gonna be a bitter pill to swallow.
-
Frienship, friendship friendship.
Friends, my friends are friendship.
Friendship and friendship befriended friends, but friends friended friends. No friends is friend, as friend becomes friendship.
Friendship.
-
I'm only on page 11 and I already don't like how similar to FT this feels. The "fantasy", mc looking like Natsu with a different hair color + flashback of him being young involving the word dragon + main girl already have Lucy-like quirky moments, etc.
-
I dont know if it means anything but at least the premise and start is more interesing to me than fairy tail was. For all its story faults in later arcs the first 30 or so chapters were pretty boring
-
And finished. Honestly it felt very paint by the numbers (friendship friendship friendship), and I suppose the fantasy thing was more of a fakeout to instead by all sci-fi with it. In that case, Mashima, go all-out with it. Don't make every planet be fantasy magic fairy tail land #1938.
Ffs there was even a Happy clone.
-
I have zero expectations for this series, but I expect copious amounts of friendship, mysterious pasts that never get revealed, and enough fan service to make other shows go "tone it down'
Oh, and an absolute IRONCLAD commitment to the status quo.
-
that's the problem with it, I know they have names (does the girl??) but I just couldn't stop thinking "Natsu, Lucy, and Happy"
-

Exactly, the characters aren't unique enough to make me think about anything else except for 'Is that Timeskip Lucy, and Grey and Natsu's love child?"
I mean, I'll give Mashima like 10 or so chapters to get them developed, but there is so little effort put into the designs so far.
-
it's how they were acting, too. Lucy 2 being all wide-eyed, dressed more casually, boobs being flaunted, Natsu 2 being a meathead with the motivation "muh friends".
Also wait, that little drill-nosed thing on the colorspread…..i've seen that before...

I'm ok with Happy being there, he's the mascot.
I just hope Mashima learns his lessons because Fairy Tail had a SHIT ton of potential to be something truly great. He is more than capable of producing wonderful work, I just hope he tries.
-
The designs are similar, but I think it's nothing out of the ordinary for an author with an established artstyle. Everything Toriyama has ever done looks derivative of Dragon Ball and Dr Slump. Let's not forget that Fairy Tail borrowed Plue and SiegHart from Rave Master, and that Gray was a Musica clone when he was first introduced (and Natsu and Lucy very reminiscent of Haru and Elie). I'm sure these new characters will come into their own with time.
About the first chapter, I thought it was fine. The background art is good as always and the change to sci-fi was refreshing in that regard.
We'll see how it develops, it is in the long term that Mashima's writing tends to fall apart. -
First page alone I thought Gray, Lucy and Happy were heading for Adventure. Seriously there are other animals besides cats. Also other hair styles exist…sigh
-
I don't even care that it looks just like fairy tail, but it's 80 pages of boring. The only thing I liked was the dragon ship. Just compare 80 pages of OP with this…
-
Even for Mashima, using the word "friendship" like 30 times in this chapter alone is insane.
Other than that boobs, a feminine character that just cries and an interesting premise that in the hands of a good author could be promising…but we are talking about Mashima here. -
Fairy Tail Z - Friendship in Space!
-
-
80 pages of blah. Wow Mashima you outdone yourself.
-
Half of the chapter should have been Not Natsu goffying around with Demon King that is totally not the Igneel of this story.
-
Mashima has clearly stopped giving a fuck about putting in a decent effort to write a somewhat original manga and has chosen to go by cookie cutter tactics that many other shonen authors had employed. And he most likely will get away with it as he is pretty much riding on the coattails of his own fame thanks to the success of Rave and Fairy Tail.
Honestly, it says a lot when the only things that even looked interesting were the mecha king and the dragon!
Although, I can't help but feel that the dragon somewhat resembles the condor from _The Mysterious Cities of Gold_.
@darktravis:Anyway, I think we can all agree that this does not need a new thread.
I don't.
Start a new thread!
@Long:I dont know if it means anything but at least the premise and start is more interesing to me than fairy tail was. For all its story faults in later arcs the first 30 or so chapters were pretty boring
The Eisenwald arc was NOT boring.
-
hmmm. It's a little more different than I was expecting so far setting wise but character wise so far pretty similar. the huge emphasis on friendship isn't a good sign….it won't be bad if it doesn't get too obnoxious...in which it was quite so so far. Also Mashima could have at least given Happy a different name -_-.
I'll keep reading for now but keeping expectations low
-
Maybe it would be better for Mashima to just give this work an early mercy killing and retire. :ermm:
-
Friendship! I mean: the whole "Let's be mean so he goes away, while we die a pathetic death" was dumb and forced. What will happen when he goes back to see them, and find them either inactive or completelly scrapped? Is a shonen protagonist so dumb that he wouldn't understand that his robot friends are going to shut donw and can't repair them with resources of the island/planet and need to go out to the "mainland" to find parts, no matter the number of friendship speeches or hours trying to fix them? Or did he know that they were acting and just obtuselly followed the script?
-
Also wait, that little drill-nosed thing on the colorspread…..i've seen that before...
He's here since Rave so what is the problem he appears again ?
-
Sigh…Mashima
The space dragon was a nice twist, for a second that made me kinda curious to see what crazy settings he could come up with if given countless planets as his playground. But that's really all there is to NotFairyTailInSpace. No innovation (or effort) whatsoever on either character design or storytelling, fanservice galore, friendship this friendship that and always the same magic/science/whatever excuse of a name that inevitably comes down to throwing a hard punch (the gravity thing might provide a few entertaining moments, but I don't trust Mashima to deliver on this)
