My Hero Academia - Gomu Gomu no Gentle Fist
-
More like Guitar Raven.
Fuck F Chords.

Okay Mineta, you got me. That was hilarious.
This chapter highlights how well Deku's power has been handled. No off-screened training arcs, and on the occasion he pulls out some new super move it always has consequences and he reflects on the experience afterwards, figuring out how he can use it without damaging himself in the process. There's a nice logic and steady flow to it all, and I can't express how much I love him looking back at where he started and taking inspiration from that. Now that he has long range attacks and an AoE effect I hope we'll get to see him struggle with collateral damage. It's always been present (especially in Bakugo's fights) but it's never been properly explored.
-
Yeah, MHA's handling of the different powers has been for the most part very good.
Stuff like Eri's, Overhaul's and Nighteye's a little vague and cryptic powers are luckily exceptions.
-
Bless you, Tokoyami!
Dat band, man. I swear if their concert gets interrupted I'll…be annoyed. Can't think of a good band name. U20? Exploding Chilli Peppers? Nine Inch Talons? Study Pistols?Wasn't expecting Deku training. From what I gather Deku will switch back and forth between regular and 20% full cowl. Guess that means he'll put 20% in his feet or hands for added speed or punch. I don't even know what to think how Deku's future fight style will be. Some type of Spider-Man Gear 4 hybrid.
Don't know if Eri is visiting now or we time skipped.
-
Interesting but I still really hope deku learns how to actually fight and be unpredictable, I feel horikoshi is making it deliberate all mights advice is only with one for all, hopefully mirio or whomever can teach him more combat besides just upping his hits
-
Lovely chapter, the bit will Mineta being too short to play got my sides. And is nice to see Toshinori tutoring Midoriya-shonen but one thing really bothers me, after almost one year of people; Bakugo, Muscular, Sir and Chisaki, telling him he doesn't know how to fight and he has yet to ask anyone about cqc or martial arts.

It's like Superman and martial arts, it would be a marginal improvement over just simple moves. Martial arts in comics is all about learning a move to counter something your opponent can do, or using extra strength through their momentum or basic phisics, with the power of 10+ people that becomes kind of redundant.
Besides Deku already knows some Judo.
-
So…Wait. Did we get a time skip at the end? Or are they just visiting in advance?
This chapter was pretty good. I'm hoping for a tiny bit more practice screen time. They might have the band together but now they have to make it all work as one.
-
!
I love the progression of Deku's powers being executed strategically instead of only being the typical shonen "MORE POWER" style. Although the flashback panel for Step 2 should have been Deku fanning out Shouto's flames at the Sports Festival Cavalry Battle since his attack on the USJ Invasion Noumu was only weakened because of its shock absorption Quirk (although it did give him the mindset of reducing the power behind his One for All attacks).
Additionally, I find Mineta's perviness gags volatile not just because they're sexual harassment in every possible way aside from straight-up rape, but because the occasional jokes he has that don't focus on being a pervert are actually pretty funny. I still remember chuckling when he was mocking Shouto for failing the Provisionary License Exam, thus betraying his top student reputation. It's so wasteful that 98% of his panel time has to be irredeemable when he can work so much better with other comedic material.

I'm hoping for this too.

I want to say "Thank God the Internship arc's over", but Eri's presence in this arc has me shaky. I hope we get anything other than CCC's shonen cliche prediction of Eri learning how to hold back her powers because "she wants to protect her friends".
Don't know if Eri is visiting now or we time skipped.
So…Wait. Did we get a time skip at the end? Or are they just visiting in advance?.
Yeah, the lack of a timeskip transition panel is very weird. But it wouldn't make sense to have Eri appear so early for both storytelling drama reasons and the promise being about Culture Day specifically.

Yeah it is a marginal gain, but the point in the story he doesn't have the overwhelming weather changing power, at least not with out risking crippling himself. Learning a thing or two could help make his fighting style more diverse and less telegraphed.

I interpreted Mirio's creepy "we can go on dates" as just that - plural dates. That's why his opening clause is, "Since I'm off from school for the time being…". Meaning, he's got all the time in the world, so they can spend the next few weeks dating.
Ugh.
Point is, she's probably just visiting.
Supporting evidence:
- Zero indication of mini timeskip, visual or otherwise
- Chapter title is "Prepping for the School Festival is the Funnest Part (Part 1); implying Parts 2, 3, and so on. More chapters about prep, specifically.
-

Ugh.
I can't help but feel you're making more out of than is actually there. The only reason to be creeped out, to my mind, would be if Mirio was seriously, legitimately trying to seduce Eri and, honestly, does anyone here actually that's happening?
-
I've already discussed this at length. A bit of hand-waving can be done, but even Izuku, a character in the story, is like "yo bro, tone it down." Can't write it off as cultural relativism, and language absolutely matters beyond intent insofar as others' interpretation.
But my "ugh" wasn't even the salient point here, so…?
The relevant part now is the implied frequency of the "dates" because we're trying to determine if a mini timeskip happened and the school festival is now, or if Eri's just going to be hanging around U.A. for a month as Mirio's foster child.
-
The way I see it is that it's meant to be kind of awkward optimism on Mirio's part.
-

My only point was just what I said: it seemed to me that you were making the Mirio date thing into a bigger deal than it actually is. Like you brought it up the way you did just to comment on it (hence my inclusion of the ugh) when you could have just as easily made the same relevant point with "Mirio said he'd be taking her out, but nothing said he'd be doing it only once".
I'm not writing it off as "cultural relativism" (by which I'm assuming you mean something like the TV Tropes term, Values Dissonance), either. I'm writing it off as a joke that didn't work, at which point I shrugged and put it out of my mind.
Until or unless Mirio gets weird looks because Eri said she's on a date with Mirio or something like that, I don't see that it matters now.
-
This chapter really strikes a nice balance between fun slice of life goofs and the type of nice Deku training we haven't seen in over a year. Low-key great character moment: Bakugou staying up late to work with everyone.
Plus the first half of the chapter strongly resembled one classic scene:
!

when you could have just as easily made the same relevant point with "Mirio said he'd be taking her out, but nothing said he'd be doing it only once".
lol so you have a problem with my communication style. Kay.
The word in question was date(s)/dating. It's key to figuring out the timeline here. Trying to refer back to that scene while awkwardly going out of my way to avoid the word out of deference to I-don't-know-what is bizarre and more trouble than it's worth. I mean thanks a whole lot for the suggested rewrite of my post but I'll take a hard pass on neurotically parsing my words because you disagree with my reading of a scene.
You're perfectly entitled to shrug and put whatever out of your mind, and I'm entitled not to. Harping on "ugh" instead of, I don't know, commenting on the timeline thing just seems like intentional derailment when we've already debated the issue. That wasn't bait :P

I'm hardly harping on the ugh. I just included it because I thought it was relevant to the part I quoted. Again, I think you're making something into a bigger deal than it was actually intended to be. My "problem with your communication style" was more about getting the feeling you brought up what was essentially a non issue just to further harp on it yourself. My "suggested rewrite of your post" was noting that you didn't actually have to refer to it at all if the scene bothered you as much as it seems to me that it does. It's not even all that awkward a phrasing.
If I'm wrong about how big a deal this is to you, then fine, I'm the one likely reading too much into it.
The word dates/dating isn't that essential to figuring out a timeline. Not when the only real questions is "are we at the Festival already?"
-
sigh
You win! You figured me out. That throwaway "creepy" and "ugh" was all a plot to have this same tired argument again and rile you up and ultimately get nowhere. That's what I wanted to spend my morning on.
We've wasted enough time on this. Take it to PM if the dead horse isn't quite beaten into pulp yet.

I won't, if only because I think you've already made my "making a big deal out of nothing" point well enough for me.

How does Aoyama plan to be part of both the staging and the dancing team?

Dude, Mirio is an excitable goofball who has no problem showing his privates to an entire class of juniors (and then goes on to assault them from behind). Without context, the previous sentence could be interpretated as me describing a serial pervert.
I doubt he's being serious about the whole date thing. He just comes off as innocently dumb.
-
How does Aoyama plan to be part of both the staging and the dancing team?
By dancing inside the Disco ball itself.
-
I completelly forgot his full frontal ass-ault.
But the spech of "this cape is for wrapping little girls".. What if Mirio is a true sexual predator? Would the author dare?
-
Wait I'm confused. Has the term dating become exclusively romantic since I've been gone?
-

I'm sincerely unsure if that's meant to be taken seriously…@Garaku:

It's usually associated with couples so it does have more romantic connotations than not
-
I was thinking "this is stupid, he's a wholesome boy, not counting the creepy cape moment, and the creepy date moment" and his original full frontal assault? I'm not so sure anymore.
-
He's turned into that uncle that says weird things to young girls thinking it's sweet and chivalrous to speak to a girl like a grown lady. It's probably nothing. But my god is it not cute lol.
-
Maybe Horikoshi just decided it's his thing. Nejire has that awkward childlike bluntness, Tamaki has low self esteem and is unable to recognize someone complimenting him and Mirio… unintentionally comes off as a sexual predator.
I tried. :ninja:[h=3][/h]

Still not sure how seriously to be taking this. I think it's the reference to the cape moment throwing me because, for all the grief I was giving CCC about it, I can understand the date thing. Meanwhile I have never seen anyone else state nor thought myself that the cape thing was creepy. I always thought it rather badass and heartwarming, actually.
-
Are we really considering it?
It was a joke that was badly received but I doubt creepy to kids would be Mirio quirkiness. I mostly like his personality and while the joke didn't make me laugh I didn't register it as part of a pattern and I love to search for problematic patterns.
Anyway nnext chapter will be on him so we'll see.
-
Are we really considering it?
I'm not. I think that's why I'm not following the logic train, such as it is and what there is of it.
-
I'm following in order to try to kill it for ever (Or have the bragging reward).
The cape thing was a thing they harped way too long on Weekly Manga Recap.

So "not serious" then?

Volume 17 cover to be retconned to a somber b&w portrait of Izuku's backpack once Mirio is revealed as a predator.
First-editions with the Mirio cover will be rare but not exactly sought-after.
-
Side note. Is anyone else excited for the anime to cover this arc!? We'll most likely get a cool song out of it. Hopefully. But mostly I'm curious how they decide the music will sound in the anime. I mean they decribed Bakugou's drumming as perfect. But like..What did he play? Jiro had a husky voice? So unexpected. Especially since her voice doesn't strike me as deep. I wanna know what Kirishima, Aoyama and even Mineta sounded like lol. Does Kohei get to pick what they sound like?

How normal is it for japan to cast singing voices if said actress/actor cant sing

Haha, makes you wonder what will actually happen. If Mirio appears wearing a trenchcoat, I'll stop reading and skip the following 2 chapters just in case.
Horikoshi is aware, at least, Deku's reaction confirms it. He has to be going somewhere with it. SOMEWHERE NICE I HOPE.
At least it's not at Karate Shoukoushi's level. Really had to work hard to disregard a specific part. Hard to do when a character involved becomes a part of main cast and is being thrown in your face constantly. That shit was insane.

Vigilantes: chapter 24 is out!
https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/chapter/my-hero-academia-vigilantes-chapter-24/6651?read=1! Pop Step still on the character development train. Points to Cyclops doing Optic Blasts.
! Thought Ms. Bee would escape. Glad it looks like we're wrapping up her possession in the next several chapters. Just in time for mom to die? That'll suck. Knuckleduster is on fire, as usual. He's been prepared to take her down for a long time. -
!
Fantastic page for Jiro, I wish we could've heard what it sounded like.
"Husky and sexy", apparently.Speaking of which, Mineta sure got a chuckle out of me with his instrument moment.
That was well done, Horikoshi! I love when Mangaka get meta with their comedy. Also:
!
! These girls are too sweet/nice for their own good,
yet it also warms my heart to see them act in such a way. -
For some reason, I imagine Jiro's singing voice being something like this:
!
Again, excellent chapter, still hoping hoping against hope that the arc never ends. Any time Mineta is actually really funny, you know there's some magic at work.
-
I got a Tal Wilkenfel from that panel actually.
!
If it was something more rock&rollish I would've went with something from the Screaming Females
!
-
Deep Dope?

-
Mineta, you are the worst.
-
It´s getting a bit far with his jokes but well, it´s Japan
-
Don't see what's so Japan about that remark. People joke around like that all over the world. I kept expecting Mirio to be awkward the whole chapter. Glad that didn't happen.
Time for Deku to get a special training?
-
-
I really liked the chapter, the name of class B play sounds amazing. Also seeing Mina dressed up as someone from Men in Black was pretty cool, even if she fired Deku in the end, it seems that Kapoeira Deku is out of question now…
-
At this point I wish Mineta was the traitor so that we don't have to deal with him during these moments.
