Guys, yesterday I dreamt that Bege had torn the cake apart and held a banquet. I was there and ate different pieces of the cake, and I must say… It was absolutely delicious. You have no idea. I can relate to Mama now, totally. I have been hungry ever since. No matter what I eat, I'm still hungry. I gotta have that cake, man. Oh and then Big Mom arrived and ate some of the leftovers and got fat again. She liked them, but it was not enough because she wanted the whole cake for her, so she started going after us. End of the dream. I swear this happened to me.
Chapter 894: 12:05 AM
-
-
Some of us really want that Bigmom finally eats the goddamn cake
-
At this point, who even cares about the cake anymore. This arc was delayed so sanji can shine off panel making a cake the regular cook way then he just left it behind when he got to the person he made the f**** cake for and doesn't care anymore about giving her the cake, he has another mission now. Now he also left the crew behind, because we don't want him stuck in a smoothie and girls crew situation and would rather take on the fleets at chocoa Island alone rather then be forced to fight with smoothie's fleet. Not that he will fight the fleets at chocoa isalnd, since they have girls too, he will just find a non fighting plan to get luffy from there.
-
Why should they, its not like their getting paid or have a reputation or people to be accountable to.
Scanlators were created because we all want the quick and easy fix. Heck most of us on here will gladly read Korean or Japanese scans as long as it means new One Piece chapter to devour.
So please lets not pretend this guys owe us anything.
This strikes me as a rather shitty attitude. Maybe they don't owe us anything, per say, but that doesn't mean we can't criticise them nor that they shouldn't try to improve. The sad truth of the matter is that most people read scanlations only and don't bother with the official release. The latter costs money, is out later and doesn't leak like the Japanese version, and can't be read in all territories. Plus the 4kids days have left a stigma on One Piece localisations that remains to this day in the minds of some. Oh I'm sure more people on here have WSJ subscriptions than have admitted it, but the speed the threads fill makes it abundantly clear that even among them the scanlations are the first port of call and place the discussion is geared.
So knowing that the scanlations, sad as this is, are going to be the first and often only way most of the people contributing to the discussions will be reading the series, it would be bloody nice of them to not leave out details like the sound effects, to proofread their damn scripts, keep a little consistency, and not Dogtooth up the place. If they're fans of the series they work on, maybe they should double check their work for unclear lines, mistakes and contradictions, to keep the quality of discussion high.
And another thing. Scanlators make money from us. They put ads on their sites, then ask for donations on top of that, then one in particular put a bitcoin mining thing on their page on top of that. And then they watermark their shit so that when it spreads they're always trying to bring readers back to their site to view their ads instead. They put a credit page with their names in the middle of the chapter, and hide the obligatory 'please support the official release' page at the back, sometimes after a collection of fanart, well after the point most would just close the tab. Because of course, why would they want people to see there's another option? And certainly why would they place that option anywhere that implies its more important than people seeing their usernames?
So there's no defense of these guys, really. If we count them as fans on a passion project, they're fans who don't treat the series well with what they leave out and fail to double check, and the liberties they take, even though they must know they're the first and in some cases only way some fans will be experiencing the series. As fans, they should want better for One Piece. And for people just doing us a free service in a quick and rough way, they sure seem to be asking a lot for it. And if our views are paying their bills (maybe not mine specifically, I use adblock) maybe we do have some grounds to ask for more attention to detail.
If there's going to be piracy, maybe it'd be better if it was someone just leaking the Viz scripts instead. At least then we'd all be on the same page.

Then don't use illegal scanlations? Saying the majority of fans are too isn't really an excuse, especially when you have such negative feelings towards the illegal scanlations.
Also owning a WSJ subscription isn't an excuse when you still support the illegal scans. Having ad block doesn't justify it either

I never claimed to have the moral highground. I enjoy being up to date as soon as possible and watching the discussion develop. I won't even try to pretend otherwise.
Besides which whether or not I support scans and whether or not it's okay that I look at them, even with my subscription and purchased volumes is irrelevant to the central point that scanlators should know they're the only way some people have access the series and until something changes the only way some people will be willing to access the series, and if they're fans who care about the fan community they should act more responsible for that, and that they actually make money and ask for more money off our readership and should maybe reflect that in the quality of their work.
It would be ideal if scanlations stopped being a thing in the same way officially licenced streaming services have nearly wiped out fansubs, but the fact is they still exist and they still drive most of the discussion in a way that makes them hard to avoid. This isn't some niche version of the series that only a handful of people read, MS and Jaimini race to have the chapter out first and be the primary reading experience of what seems to be the bulk of the fanbase every week. And if they're going to do that - if they're going to be that - to so many people and can't just go away and let the official release handle it instead, than I don't think it's out of line to suggest they do it a little better.

I get what you're saying. I guess I've stopped giving them so much credit, so I don't necessarily expect them to have high standards. I was especially turned off when I heard MS is now asking to use viewers pc power to mine for bitcoin. Idk, I'm sure they're good fans and not bad people, it all just seems shady.
I admit, waiting for the official release makes me miss out on the bulk of conversation, cuz discussions start dying down somewhat early. And I've still cheated on a few chapters and read them early, so i don't want to come off like I view myself morally superior. Trying to avoid the spoiler section is a pain too, but oh well

Yeah, I go into them with low expectations and don't take anything as ghospel until it's confirmed in the official release. But as best I can gather, a lot of people, perhaps even the majority, seem to just read whatever comes out first and either can't be bothered or don't have the means to compare it with other versions. (And nothing against them for that, no one's expected to read the chapter two or three times just to compare).
The day the raw leaks get plugged and the official releases in both the west and Japan is what's reaching people first is going to be a good day. It'd just be nice to see us all on the same page for the chapter talkback.
And legitimately good on you for taking a stand against stolen content, even without a 100% success rate. Your self-control is still so much better than mine.

Bro, I think you are being a little bit Naive when it comes to this situation.
The Scanlators out there are just exploiting an opportunity the way any Business savy person would. They know that they don't have to produce quality work, just something that is passable. No matter how much we complain there are thousands of people who don't give a damn.
The only reason I can see taht could make them improve is their competitors BUT then the Scanlation competition is based on who can release the chapter faster than the other and not necessarily who has the highest quality.
-
If this cake gets ruined, mama is going to have a heart attack…one yonkou down
agreed.
Dont give Mama cake. She'll be weaker and weaker and then died. this will be a cruel and sadistic thing of defeating a yonkou -

I don't think I'm out of line to want better, or to say on a public forum what I think the scanlators are doing wrong. I'm not holding my breath for change, but I don't think knowing they'll keep doing it is reason enough not to criticize them.
You're right that competition would be the only thing that's truly likely to force a change. I said in conversation with thegab, in the post just above yours, that I think the idea scenario would be plugging the leaked raws to make the scanlations release on or after the official street date, bringing the official version to the forefront, the same way updated streaming services with official subs damaged the fansub industry to the point of near destruction.

@Shobu:
I have a revelation right now, after thinking just a little, been in forums 10 years, and this is the first place where there's so many complaints about ppl not able to understand what i said, which is clearly a storm of ideas that can perfectly joint together if the receptor knows about what i'm talking about, i came to the conclusion that the average IQ of ppl here is around the moronic grade… or that don't know remember facts like i do... or the most possible of the three, they're so lazy that want everything in a silver plate.
It is a pity, the world really envelops all kind of people. We can only hope to achieve your high level of IQ.
! Christ, this really nails it. You're an absolute joke.

It is a pity, the world really envelops all kind of people.Different people are prone to interpreting things they read differently, because they're well, different. Worse if a story mashes storm of ideas together, because at this point it's no longer about interpreting a story correctly, but about making delibarate effort to make some sense of it, let alone finding the right interpretation intended by author. Surely you think you're right and have your perspective, as everyone does. But it stays within you only, if you can't articulate/manifest your perspective in way that other people can understand.

It is a pity, the world really envelops all kind of people."Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man."
You have to be some insane level of narcissistic to come into a public forum that is accessible by people with hundreds of individual life experiences/perspectives, and get pissy when you can't force them to agree with your single opinion. The point of this thread/forum/whatever isn't to instruct anyone–you're looking for a thread on installing a patio light fixture on a home depot forum to get that. But on this one, you just state your opinion, and other people state theirs, and sometimes people who agree with your opinions will let you know, and some people who have competing opinions might let you know that, too; and if the two of you decide, you can go back and forth defending your opinion and considering the merits of the competing opinion.
At no point, in that process, is anyone required to agree with you; on anything. And you're not required to change your opinion by anyone either. So why are you so mad?
Also, if you explain your opinion to 20 different people, and 20 different people don't get it, what's the common denominator in those 20 scenarios? Maybe start looking there...

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand One Piece. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of maritime concepts most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Luffy's simplistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Akira Toriyama literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny - they say something deep about HISTORY. As a consequence people who like the Whole Cake Island Arc truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn't recognize, for instance, the disappointment in Big Mom's existencial catchphrase "WEEEEEEEEDING CAAAAKE," which itself is a cryptic reference to the reign of Marie Antoinette and how she grew out of touch with the needs of her subjects, as Oda is doing with his readers. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Eiichiro Oda's genius unfolds itself on their pre-timeskip manga volumes. What fools… how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Kaido tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the true fans' eyes only, for people who understand that the manga can only be good if this arc ends NOW and we get to Wano ASAP - And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

That explains so much! We may need to lobby for a full semester literature course examining the philosophical beliefs that really drive Luffy. When you thought he was just asking a skeleton if he can defecate, it was really an examination of the ramifications of whether our biological need to poop is a result of a digestive system that has taken hundreds of thousands of years of evolution to develop into a cleansing juggernaut; or if the need to poop is only a psychological craving we have subconsciously because our species has dictated to itself that a person must poop, so much so that it can be done even without the requisite organs or flesh. Genius!
On a slightly more serious note, someone brought it up earlier, but it didn't get much traction: Is anybody else a little put off by how disgustingly quickly Sanji abandoned his grand cake quest? Like, the story put so much effort into setting this up to be a HUGE moment for Sanji, that would give shine to everything we know about his character and allow those character traits to save the day. Then in the blink of a chapter, Sanji just shrugged, said "Nah, you take it. Go feed it to her. Or let her die hungry somewhere. I don't really care. Nami-schwan!", and went off to save his captain using exactly NONE of all that built-up character.
I feel like Oda was so desperate to return Sanji to his dumb-ass pervert ways that he forget to fulfill his character arc for this arc. He has ZERO reason to trust Bege–everything he's seen from him has been dirty, underhanded, and back-stabby. Sanji should've quickly greeted his crew, told them his plan so they could enact it, promised them to return as soon as his work was done, then went back to the Nostra Costella to fulfill his cook's promise.
Also: So Pudding's just not gonna so much as comment on Sanji's obvious lust for Nami? Okay then...

Maybe not Bege directly, but he has enough reason to trust Chiffon. It’s reasonable enough to believe that she can keep him in check.
That said, I hope Bege does try and assassinate Big Mom. It could be pretty exciting.

Another thing that doesn't make much sense in all this is the FTP reasoning. They are completely convinced BM will pass out after eating the cake, but at the same time they feel the need to gain as much distance as possible from the SH so BM can't go back to attack them after she eats the cake?

Better safe than sorry. Just because Sanji thinks Big Mom will pass out, doesn't mean Big Mom will pass out. Bege didn't have a plan B for what might happen if the poison darts won't work, because it didn't even cross his mind that his plan might fail
-
Great week to have late spoilers. Atleast blackpanther comes out lol
-
CP0 attacked blackbeard pirates after their duel with revolutionaries. Btw, how did they found out about that fight and location of baltigo?
CP0 Stussy is here so based on this event with SHs and BM, they could attack BM pirates and take advantage of this fight they have with SHs. Not that I have big hopes for them ever since it was revealed lucci is in charge and it's the old CP9 guys.
-
At least Phantom Thread comes out

Without Cracker and Katakuri around, they will sure have a chance to…. do something, I guess
But they need a teleportation power if they want to be there on cue
-
Not really, with stussy here for a while now, they could just have fleets ready next to totland. Maybe they did have a plan to do something to bm pirates because their focus on the weddding, but the fishman bomb changed their plans a bit and they are on stand by to see what SHs do.
I just don't get it how CP9 guys go from beaten by SHs in EL to fighting yonkous just like that. And Lucci is the commander of cp0…

Right?! Like, Sanji's whole thing was he was THIS sure that his cake was so delicious that it would incapacitate Big Mom. Yet he is in no way sticking around to stake his life on that claim. Can you imagine if in the battle with Lucci, Luffy had staggered back to his feet half unconscious, then threw every last ounce of his remaining strength into "Jet…GatliOOH, SHINY PENNY!"
Great week to have late spoilers. Atleast blackpanther comes out lol
(Luffy new form + Black Panther) x Same Weekend = Final Weekend material! Let's just call February a wrap now.

Ok, enough everybody.
Where is my weekly drug? Where is the snake? OMG WHERE IS MY FUKING SNAKE? -
Last week was an early release you dolts.

Well, honestly I'd rather like to see the WG taking down an emperor than Teach so I like the idea.
But Stussy being there doesn't really back up anything. She seems to be only doing basic information work. It's not because she's there that something's about to happen -

What Sanji did here can also be seen as washing his hands from the one thing Big Mom will chase to the ends of the earth. Honestly that's anything but a favor he's done to the Firetanks. The way I see it, his job was to produce Big Mom's dream cake but not necessarily feed it to her himself - and it's done. If Bege wants to destroy the cake, or poison it, or whatever, then it's his responsibility and he'll be the one with Mom on his tail from now on. Running back to help his captain feels a lot more Mister Prince-y than making sure the cake is delivered at all costs and possibly finding himself powerless amidst the untrustworthy Firetanks & a pissed Mom.

No, he specifically forbade the poisoning of the cake. And his stated mission as a cook is to FEED whomever wants to eat; his stated goal in this arc was to feed Big Mom this cake that would satisfy her craving. He states both of those things in recent chapters (too lazy to find pages). He is definitely abandoning his mission.

Sanji knows that Bege won't do anything dirty with the cake thanks to Bege's reaction after sampling the frosting.
Otherwise, I think it's a tad too early to talk about how Sanji's role in this arc is concluding, given that none of us have any real idea what the arc's conclusion will be like.

@Shobu:
I missed context because i really don't want to discuss that, Fool. Didn't you read that sentence before the one that you quoted? xD
I don't get it… but if you feel nice about it, fine with me.
I don't have, but if i would, i wouldn't like to read that. I dropped FT, maybe i will with OP after this poor developments.
It is hidden dude:
"I never referred to that, in fact it was the many ocassions where our main protagonists starts to avoid attacks after timeskip simply checking the aura of them before are performed. Problem is when script is involved in the "checking aura" process. I don't mind sense the breathing, don't mind VOAT, don't mind instinct perception… i even tolerated Haki flowing thought air… but the concept of Oda for FS simply doesn't fit to all the other topics and conditions of his flawed power."
Hope you can put the words together…
I have a revelation right now, after thinking just a little, been in forums 10 years, and this is the first place where there's so many complaints about ppl not able to understand what i said, which is clearly a storm of ideas that can perfectly joint together if the receptor knows about what i'm talking about, i came to the conclusion that the average IQ of ppl here is around the moronic grade… or that don't know remember facts like i do... or the most possible of the three, they're so lazy that want everything in a silver plate.
It is a pity, the world really envelops all kind of people. So now horizontal slashes are weaker than vertical ones? xD
Now i get why do you like this silly development. You like to make a lot of jokes.Man, you could start the Snake-man topic alone, you don't need to quote me xD
I can only say that if the new mode is only a pouring of Culverin-type of hits, it's gonna be a dissapointment.
Kind of ironic with the amount of spelling and grammar mistakes laden in this post alone

He is definitely abandoning his mission.
Yes, I'm not denying he said one thing and then proceeds to do another because his priorities are changing. People do that all the time, it doesn't bother me all that much. Now that the cake is done it will feed Big Mom all the same regardless of who's serving it to her, and we've had heavy emphasis on how making the cake was the real prowess. Sanji's accomplishment should be in what it does to Big Mom, not in personally spoon-feeding it to her. So I really don't see why he should stick around when he has better things to do.
As for Sanji being the kind cook who won't let anyone starve at sea… It worked well to patch things up with Luffy in this arc, but I'm really having trouble putting the same label on Big Mom's case. His stated intention (in 892) is to "use the cake to calm down Big Mom", but that's pretty much it as far as I can tell. The "must help starving person" trope hasn't been played even once with Big Mom, so I don't think that should be his sole motivation (if at all) in feeding her. If anything he's really doing it for the safety of his crew, so again I'm not shocked if helping the crew in other ways can divert him from delivering the cake in person.

I admit that this shit made me laugh.
Ditto. Extrapolating the point further, though, are we to take this as foreshadowing that maybe Big Mom will end up being beheaded later on?

Sanji's primary obligation is to his crew, and forcing them to continue into danger to deliver the cake would violate that directive, so he's fulfilled the part of his role in creating the wedding cake and has no further obligation to do any more than that. After all, you can put a plate in front of someone but you can't make them eat. Or should Sanji also be obligated to forcefully shove the food down a person's throat if they don't want to eat what he's served them? Cooks are cooks and waiters are waiters. Sanji's the cook, and Bege is the waiter in this scenario.

True, Sanji still needs to say his goodbyes to his Vinsmoke fam. Still holding out for him to go Super Saiyan if something happens to Reiju…
-
It also bothered me that Sanji's mission will be accomplished without him.
But, on the other hand:- He trusted Chiffon with it. And she was also as much of the cake's maker as him.
- He would loose precious time the crew needs to get out of tottland territory. Big Mom might faint, but her armies won't. They couldn't escape if he was left behind

I mean, it crossed my mind that he could just Sky Walk after them but without any navigation skill he'd probably get lost trying to track the ship down.
Plus there's the possibility the cake will cause some kind of huge reaction like her painfully loud screaming that will incapacitate her own crew and let all the good guys escape.
Bege's ship can go on land, and that got me thinking…is Jimbei strong enough to lift the entire Sunny and run across dry ground with it?

@uniaka:
Not that I have big hopes for them ever since it was revealed lucci is in charge and it's the old CP9 guys.
@uniaka:
And Lucci is the commander of cp0…
What? When was this confirmed

This might be unrelated to the discussion at hand, but has anyone seen that fan comic where Pwn goat ends up being the leader of the World Government. I want to see that stuff again. It's fucking hysterical.
-

What made Lucci and the others leave the island they were retreating to? Didn't they kill the Marine crew that came after them? Wouldn't think they'd be invited back, let alone given a position of power after that. Marines must have been really desperate.

Comparisons! Actually get to put them out reasonably early today, since I have the day off.
- When Rayleigh is surprised that Luffy cares about his opponent's personality, Luffy responds in Mangastream, "I mean, aren't you curious?" whereas in Jaimini's Box and VIZ, he instead says "Huh? Of course."/"Well, sure I do!"
- In the scanlations, after Rayleight laughs in response to that and tells Luffy he's an odd fellow, the next bubble after that seems like it's also being spoken by him (or is at least ambiguous), telling Luffy there will be times when he won't be able to just run away. However, the official version instead sounds more like it's being spoken by Luffy: "You gotta consider it! For when there's no escape!"
- The next bubble after that, on the next page, also says something a bit different in every version: MS is "That looks like it hurt.", JB is "You seem to be having some trouble", and VIZ is "You're setting yourself up for a world of pain", sounding like it might be a reply to what Luffy said in the previous point.
- Katakuri's attack is "Grilled Mochi" in the scanlations, and "Burning Mochi" in the official.
- In MS, Vito states that, after they drop off the cake on the island, they'll "go on a rampage", implying a lot of fighting. However, JB and VIZ both have him instead say "start our great escape"/"make our escape".
- After Smoothie's sisters call out for her to not get any bigger, there's a speech bubble that says "She's crazy!", but seems to be coming from Smoothie herself. In JB and VIZ, it's her saying "They're so tenacious!"/"They're too slippery."
- MS spells the 35th son's name "Euwin". JB and VIZ spell it "Yuen", with a TN about what that might mean.
- Katakuri replies to Luffy with "You've already given your answer" in MS, but instead "I already answered that" in JB and VIZ.
Thanks for the comparisons!
Not sure why they called Katakuri's attack Burning Mochi in the official translations. I'm quite disappointed since all the context is there for how the word should be translated since we are in a food based Arc with characters using food based attacks. I thought it was quite funny reading the chapter after I literally ate grilled mochi the same night.
I mean just google Yakimochi (焼餅) and take a look, you'll find pictures like;

https://cdn.amanaimages.com/preview640/11020002185.jpgStephen explained it in the OP Podcast. He says though it translates to grilled mochi, they usually try to match the name of the attack to what it looks like. And since it's a burning attack, they just went with that.
(Probably ruined his actually explanation) -

(Probably ruined his actually explanation)If that's their rule, fair enough. I had a laugh when reading the Japanese but it's hard to get those things across. Where can I find this podcast, btw?

Had a listen and found that part, pretty much the way you explained it. Makes sense, but it's all about the food based attacks in this Arc like honey pretzel etc.

Excuse me for this question, I didn't check latest comments, If I remember correctly there's no break this week right?

What part of that translation disregards the food aspect though? 'Mochi' didn't stop being food because of the word burning.
Not to mention it's just as much a double entendre in Japanese regarding the oh-so-frequent use of it meaning 'jealousy' which you've disregarded.

No, there isn't.
