I don't know why you'd be slammed for that given how confusing the context is.

It's neat to hear BGM with vocals again. Also Howard the Duck.
I keep being shocked whenever more Forces info drops, because I keep having to come to the re-realization that the game isn't actually out yet. It also shows just how much I care. But it's mind-boggling; severely underwhelming footage trickling out for months after a great Sonic game, like a broken sewage line in an otherwise great bathroom.
As a Sonic fan you get used to it. Every great game is followed by a smelly fart.
-
Just saw the new video…
So what are we actually playing? Just obliterate enemies with almost zero interaction and blast through obstacles with automated theatrics? I love Sonic too but I suppose the time line of the fallen continues. I await the chosen to right wrongs of the past.
I posted that on Youtube and I know I'm going to get slammed. It's amazing how different that core Sonic audience is, they are eating it up! I mean I like to think I'm a hard core Sonic fan. I have 8(count em 8) high end Sonic collectibles in my home. The lowest end at about $150 for a Tails statue while highest being an Engman statue going for a little over $400 now. I love Sonic!
Or rather I guess I love the idea Sonic. Maybe I'm just out of touch.
looks at Mania

That's YouTube for you. But if it helps, certain forums share our thoughts.

The only thing confusing is the ambiguous "chosen", but it is pretty obvious he means either new employees or the Sonic Mania team.

I'm a Sonic fan but Mania is the first game I consider decent since Adventure 2 (which, in retrospect, has so many issues lol). Generations came close, but no cigar for me.

I mean more in the sense of whether the comment was being critical or just outright snarky but I guess that works too.

In that sense, he was doing both lol.
-
It's funny how within three months of each other we get a game that showed everything Sonic did right 20 years ago, and then right after a game that shows everything that's been wrong in the 20 years since.

I think my favorite part about the demo is how the section at 1:20 almost fools you into thinking you're going into the new desert section only to then return to Green Hill Modern Rehash Zone.
-
@The:
Well that looks like shit. I wonder if Knuckles or Tails have better stages.
Oh wait…

Of course they have stages.
! As DLC costumes for the custom character.

That's cold man :V

Oh.
Oooooh….
…. Man..... After Mania I wanted another good Sonic game to keep the momentum going, but gotta hand it to Sonic Team to turn in a garbage game....
Wonder if this one will at least come out in a finished state or if we're looking at a garbage game riddled with game breaking glitches... With the Sonic series, this is a thing that could possibly happen.

Just tell me, HOW WAS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?

Looks like SEGA dropped the ball… again.

On the bright side, at least the one-liners are enjoyable as always.

That along with the music (Yes, I'm aware of Chronicles and Boom: RoL) just can't go wrong in the Sonic series. Or… at least not too bad.
-
Not really into how a lot of this game's OST is so synth-heavy for some reason.
-
I hope Mania 2 doesn't get cancelled because of how much the first one showed up Sonic Team.
Forces may or may not be enjoyable, but I'm seeing tons of people just dismiss it because Mania was clearly better.
-
We need Forces to be dismissed to have any real hope of Sonic Team taking notes from Mania on more than a superficial level.
Here are all of the cutscenes:

The people dismissing it were always going to dismiss either because it wasn't Sonic Adventure 3 or simply another 3D Sonic game. Though that aside I really am not of the mind they'd cancel a sequel to Mania for those reasons not that it would need one.

Or, you know, because it hardly ever looked like a good game that was worth the four years Sonic Team supposedly spent developing it.

You kind of ninja'd me before I could include jadedness but I suppose that too.

It's not even just years of jadedness. It's been a while since I kept up to date with a game where almost every new thing I learned about it kept disappointing my already low standards.

Hey it's either going to come from the outset or come once you get the game in your hands sometimes even both.
-

Sort of both, but add in all of the updates and leaks in between. And there's no way I'm buying this game new. Maybe if it's less than $20 in a used bargain bin lol.
This is actually going to be the first Sonic platformer I'll skip in, well, ever. Sonic Team sort of outdid themselves in incompetence, even more than usual. It's like they took five steps back after Generations.
-
Wow. Forces really didn't sit with you, huh Count. I guess anyone with a sane mind for how Sonic works from a gameplay perspective will skip this one. But I can't, I just know need my constant hedgehog fix.
God, I'm such an apologist.:ninja:

Don't worry, I get it. The thing is, I could still find a lot of Sonic's modern games to be enjoyable to varying degrees. But Forces… No, I can't respect anything this game tried to do. I just look at the gameplay and everything it embodies literally makes me bored or even repulsed sometimes lol. I'm not going to tolerate this game. If anything, with Sonic Mania having come out in August and Super Mario Odyssey having released yesterday, now is the time more than ever for Sonic Team to finally look at themselves and take a break to try stepping things up eventually.
I called this game being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none, as soon as the custom character was announced. I was completely right. Until I see any interesting improvement, I suppose I will handle my Sonic fix by trying out the new IDW comics once they start coming out in April.
-
@Count:

Damn even I haven't played every Sonic Platformer.
-
Damn even I haven't played every Sonic Platformer.
lol Yeah, I sort of have played every single platformer. All the classic games, 3D games, all of the Dimps games. The only ones I haven't died are the Sonic 1 and 2 Game Gear games, that's really it.
…Man, I can't even say I like the music for this game. I could at least say that about literally every other Sonic game. I even liked freaking Shadow's game OST since the rock songs sounded cheesy in a likable way and cathartic. But I barely liked anything I heard for this installment that was not a remix. That is sad.
This is the best thing that came out of Forces' music:
!
! Makes me chuckle every time.I'm sure it'll get decent 6-7 out of 10 reviews. It's not an unplayable mess like 2006. But it really doesn't deserve praise in any fashion aside from making the supporting cast slightly relevant as background resistance characters? Meh.
-
I really don't know why they had to include classic Sonic in all this
! from the looks he's not very story relevant at all, but I guess Iizuka wanted Generations points?
For it was Sonic Team that made the Mania team rework it into a "prequel" for Forces. -

For it was Sonic Team that made the Mania team rework it into a "prequel" for Forces. To appeal to the classic crowd. Like how Shadow DLC is appealing to the Adventure crowd, which Iizuka himself admitted. And how the Avatar is appealing to the fan creator crowd. Shallow attempts of acknowledging different aspects of the fandom without actually giving them the fully quality experience they really want. Like I said earlier. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Just focus on one gameplay style and work on refining it the best they can. Then expand on that in sequels. But they just don't do it. And the Boost formula is probably getting in the way since they need to make huge maps of level design to burst through without exploring the place in open 3D, which is why they need to have 2D sections that slow you down to make levels seem expansive and other gameplay styles to pad out the game's length to be more than a few or even couple hours.

I had pretty much the same problem with Mania admittedly even with some of the remixes.

Neither was Unleashed but some enterprising individuals weirdly felt need to rate as bad or even worse than that.

I didn't love Mania's soundtrack as much as how high people like to put it on a pedestal. Like the intro music, it just wasn't my jam. Especially when I thought Sonic CD's intro has both better animation and a better song. But I definitely liked some of the tracks in the game though. Press Garden is great.

It always got too much hate. I actually prefer the Werehog levels over the daytime stages since they actually focused around platforming. I also really liked the atmosphere of visiting countries modeled off of real life along with their own distinct regional-styled music.

Yeah… it looks generic as fuck.
-
Yeah… it looks generic as fuck.
This is what puts me off from Forces. Most Sonic Games has something that stands out, and even when they're bad there's a layer of guilty pleasure over it. Forces feels boring. It feels like the developers are trying to please the fans by putting in characters from older games, letting you create your own OC and so forth and forgot to create a good story and make the characters actually interesting instead of random cameos.
-
Bubsy's thrown down the gauntlet.
-
Gee you'd figure the guys who made that would take heed of mind of both Bubsy's relevance and the last game in the series was released.
Instead of potentially "blurring" themselves.
-
This may be the ONLY good thing that comes out from Sonic Forces
Honestly though (by spoiling myself to the game), oddly enough Eggman seems to be remarkably boring in this game too which is an impressive thing to even make Eggman boring in a Sonic Game as he is still generally the best thing in the franchise.
-
Eggman is very bland in this game. Not just in personality, but how he supposedly took over the world with barely any interesting changes and dumbed down how colorful and wacky all of his robots are.
I expected a lot more from an empire owned by such a flamboyant narcissist. Something like World Bowser from Super Mario 3D World. Maybe Egg Quarters from Sonic Adventure 2. Or Hang Castle/Mystic Mansion and Egg Fleet/Final Fortress from Sonic Heroes.
But no, we get sand in the background of Green Hill Zone and generic white/gray bases. How tacky and underwhelming.

But we have Infinite, who's half Shadow and half Metal Sonic. What more could a Sonic game need?

Gameplay that's not redundant or centered (only) around Sonic.

Also being "half" Silver?
! Infinite and Silver fight DBZ style in a cutscene.

3D games where you actually play in 3D more than 50% of the time.
-
Gameplay that's not redundant or centered (only) around Sonic.
Especially non-hedgehog character. I'd do anything to play as Blaze in a (good) 3D Sonic game.
-
My dream Sonic game would be a bunch of throwback levels to old Sega franchises. Espio could star in a few newly designed Shinobi levels, Metal Sonic could do Panzer Dragoon, Eggman could fight in a mech version of Powerstone, and Knuckles could team up with Blaze for Gunstar Heroes.
