I got bored after finishing Mario Odyssey and downloaded the demo.
The grass is so ugly that it's actually really distracting.
Edit: I did enjoy the custom character stage a bit, though.

Reviews are finally starting to come in. In fact, SEGA delayed giving review codes to major gaming news sites until November 7th by using the excuse of them having a necessary patch being developed for launch day (part of the patch is Super Sonic transformations. Something you would think is included in the base game). How cunning.
Here is Polygon's review, which I assume used a copy of the game that broke the street date:

Man, these reviews are going to be so scrumptiously cathartic.
You know it's bad when even polygon thinks it's too easy
Saw these scores coming from a month away. It's such a pity to see them go from Unleashed, to Generations, to the poor attempt that Forces shows.
The character customization is enough reason to get into the game.
Not that the overall experience will be rewareding or not.
That just means SEGA should have made a character customization spinoff game rather than as a main series title gimmick.

Didn't know Colors and Lost World were that reviled.

Colors had somewhat positive reviews. Lost World… was more mixed/negative. I expect Forces to get scores like Lost World or hopefully lower.

You could probably go to deviantart or something of the like to find actually valuable character customization, or at least of greater quality than what this game seems to offer.
Like I personally like customization in games, and in Forces it's clearly devoid of purpose and just promotion.

I know where they rank I was just sarcastically pointing out the fact they were weirdly missing in that collection of recent main Sonic titles.

I caught onto that a few seconds after my post. My bad.

I should've made it way obvious given how easily people fail to pick it up.

It's hard for me to imagine Forces getting anywhere _near_ lost world scores. Graphically the game is far worse than Boom, and it's hard to argue that Forces isn't the worst looking Sonic game of all time. It's almost like the game was designed for mobile devices several years ago and never updated.
Edit:
Famitsu is a joke. Their review scores haven't been useful for well over a decade - They're more cheerleaders for Japanese AAA budget games then reviewers these days.
Sonic 2006 got a 30/40 from Famitsu. Sonic Mania also got a lower score than Forces.

Can't say I'm surprised to be honest kind of given Sonic's shaky presence in Japan.

Pretty much. Not that their review system is doing any favors to take them seriously.

That's just because Forces is a better game than Mania and that 2006 was a reputable game
We know quite a couple of reviewers here for some reason though it was a much better game than Unleashed.
To paraphase a NY Jets Draft Video
Obviously they knew something the people here don't.
Between 1986 and 2006 Famitsu had four perfect scores, and another four scores of 39/40 in its 20 year history. Getting a perfect from them REALLY meant something.
Then they gave Nintendogs a perfect score and the floodgates have opened and they've given something like 90 perfect or near perfect scores in the last 10 years. That's practically one perfect game a month.
(And almost all of those are japanese games. I think Skyrim and GTA5 are the only non-japanese games to get perfects.)
So yeah, their scores don't mean what they used to and they're pretty worthless for american made games.
The Episode Shadow DLC was leaked. And it actually shows Infinite's origin story. Go to 7:29 to see it.
!
…lol I can't believe people were actually excited for Infinite. He truly embodies everything bad about pretentiously edgy fanfic characters.
GameXplain put up a first impressions video.
So far Bubsy really does have more positive press behind it.

…..Wouldn't that be largely because it hasn't really gotten any press about it?
i.e. no news is good news.
Hey, maybe for the next Mania game they can resurrect this.

Several Youtubers have made videos saying it's a fun game with a critical flaw: about two hours of total gameplay.
For a 30 dollar game that's unacceptable, but they still recommended picking it up on sale.
Sonic Forces hasn't had the same level of endorsement.

Which is understandable given Sonic's divisiveness compounded by Sega dropping a Sonic game that while divisive in it's right was heralded as being the Sonic game that overturns the long period of sub par Sonic games.
That and some are being cute once you remember how many people for some reason thought the PC was originally Bubsy
So today, I contemplated buying either Forces or Tekken 7, and chose the latter. Mainly because the former just didn't look like I was gonna get enough enjoyment for my buck, and I really love fighting games. Guess I'll be waitin' for that lovely price drop then.
Switch officially has the worst version of Sonic Forces.
"Despair is not a luxury we can afford"
This is going to be a good game. laughing

In Short: Whoever this shoddily made platformer is meant to please it won’t be those that like Sonic Mania, or any of the better 3D Sonic games.
Pros: The avatar customisation is very impressive and clearly knows its audience. As flawed as the game is it’s not outright broken, unlike many previous Sonic titles.
Cons: Barely interactive level design that has learnt nothing from the franchise’s better entries. Clumsy, frictionless controls and weird storytelling tone.
Score: 4/10
I've played it and it's…meh.
I'll admit I enjoyed the story, simple and to the point, not too dark and edgy like the Shadow game. Yeah nothing special but I don't really expect much with these games, long as it's coherent. Though I do wish there were more cutscenes, prepare to see a lot of talking heads explaining the situation rather than showing us. Yeesh, even 06 and Boom weren't that lazy.
The gameplay segments feel so disjointed, sure it's just get from point a to b but there rarely feels like a difference between the three. Classic Sonic feels so much like an add on on this game, he has very few stages and mostly just doesn't have the lock on, so he does have some bits of challenge but not by much. And I oddly don't remember much of Modern Sonic's bits, he rarely in the game and with the short stages, don't really have any difficulty to them. I know plowing through the stages is a thing since Unleashed but at least Colors, Generations and that game had more hazards about them. This doesn't even try, enemies just stand about barely attempting to attack you and it feels quite...boring sadly. The avatar stages try to balance both of them and the variety to use "Wispons" is a good idea, but it just comes down to either having a weapon you can plow through everything with or having one that stops the pace for a bit before you proceed. And even then you can just as well hop on the enemy or bypass them completely. But really it doesn't matter which avatar your pick, none of their advantages really matter in the long run.
So are there are positives? Mmm some good music, and they do give some good variety to the customization, practically throwing clothing at you with each completed stage. And of the three, the avatar probably has the more varied stages of the bunch. If you liked Generations, you'll feel at home here, albeit in a scaled down fashion. Seriously, why are these stages so short?
Alas, much as a Sonic fan I am, this was a disappointment and a major step back compared to Generations in terms of 3D Sonic games and in quality compared to Mania. There is a lot of untapped potential here both story and gameplay wise and I can sense what they were going for (a stage that involves Infinite screwing up everything is a good example). It's not completely terrible, controls are good, keeps the sense of speed of the last main 3D Sonic games (if not a little floaty here and there. In my opinion, they should've kept the run button from Lost World and focused on tightening up the movement and physics), some of the writing is actually pretty on point that it made me chuckle a bit (some voice direction could've used work though) and is fun in small doses. But very forgettable all the same and not worth the price tag they're asking for. I'd wait for a price drop if you really want it.
John Carpenter is one of us

This is an interesting review.
Not really. It's a clear fanboy who has no problem with the mechanics or story of the game and all but outright said "this game is better because I get to use my OC." Also Studiopolis Zone is a really cool conceptually but it's literally the most boring and uninspired of the new stages in terms of actual level design. But sure knock a game for being derivative when that was the entire point, and don't mention how the refreshed second acts are often brilliant.
But whatever, you don't have to look further than the title of the video to see that it's inflammatory clickbait veiled as a genuine review. I feel dirty even watching it.
I mean, it's his opinion and he's entitled to it. But honestly, Forces' quality plus the price for it ain't sitting well with me.
Shockingly, people have different (and often terrible) opinions on the internet.
Even some reviewers I watch that are big Sonic fans (like SomecallmeJohnny) say the same beats:
basically it's okay at "best", oc plays too much like modern Sonic, classic Sonic is shoehorned in (a fact) yet somehow plays worse than he did in Generations, so on and so forth.
For the record, I disagree with him too.
It's just interesting to hear even one person stand up for Sonic Forces against the tsunami of bad reviews (although I'm pretty sure he also liked Bubsy more).
But it's not interesting. It wasn't enlightening in any way, and he has no skill (or perhaps interest) in actually articulating what was good about Forces or what was bad about Mania. He can have whatever opinion he wants, but you don't make a video called "Forces is better than Mania" and then not say jack shit for 5 minutes.
Yeah like the point of what we were saying last time wasn't that "gee how novel some guy is standing up against the torrent of negativity by being a shining light in the darkness!"
It's that dissenting opinions are commonplace on the internet. Particularly if they're not actually good at providing any substantial argument. You don't get points just for being a devil's advocate
How bad is it that a lot of the reviews I've read and seen go out of their way to list "At least it's not broken like Boom or Sonic '06" as a positive?…
How far has this series fallen when "At least the game functions competently" is a thing we have to specify?
Saw this video in my search bar and I was like I'll post it here and see if others would like to watch for a change.
Saw this video in my search bar and I was like I'll post it here and see if others would like to watch for a change.
_I almost didn't watch this video because Sonic Forces' story in no way merits any kind of defense for its abysmal quality to last half an hour of my time. But I forced myself to listen for a minute to get the gist of where the commentator would focus on. And as soon as he talked about how he thinks that Sonic Forces shouldn't be bashed for having a dark story because the comics can make that work…
No. I don't need to watch that video anymore. Sonic Forces' story isn't getting hated on simply because it is trying to be serious or "dark". It's hated because its attempts at being serious and "dark" are obnoxious and terribly written.
! After Sonic is defeated by the not-Sinister Six, Eggman's rise to world domination is told through a single panel of text covering a six month timeskip.
! Sonic got tortured for six months off-screen (Sonic's friends literally say that several times, no joke) yet perfectly fine when we see him get rescued.
! Tails is incompetent throughout the entire storyline and not once is ever useful, to the point of needing Classic Sonic to save him from Chaos 0 and not being able to fix a damaged Omega (who somehow gets repaired off-screen to make a surprise save near the end of the story).
! All of Sonic's friends barely contribute to the story besides saying cliche war rebellion quotes and yelling random nonsense in the middle of gameplay to annoy you.
! Classic Sonic is shoved into the story for no reason and disappears for no reason, without any relevance throughout the story as an afterthought.
! The Avatar barely contributes to the story besides suddenly being Sonic's partner, getting generic token praise all over the place.
! The Phantom Ruby's origin and power is inconsistent and random as hell. One minute it makes illusions so real that they hurt people, and by the end of the story Eggman tries to create a giant sun to smash into the earth and destroy the resistance (even though it will destroy him with his entire empire).
! Infinite became Eggman's greatest weapon because he got a schoolyard beating from Shadow and was insecure about being called weak. So he really is the embodiment of a shallow, childish, edgy, overpowered fanfic character (he even has heterochromia under the mask lol) that constantly talks about smelling your fear and letting you live because of his inflated ego. He also never interacts with Shadow again after that encounter. He also just disappears when he's defeated and we have no idea what happens to him, so he was a waste of time we will probably never see again.
! Eggman's hyped up league of villains turn out to be illusions, with Shadow and Chaos 0 being defeated in cutscenes without ever even showing up as bosses.
! Eggman's funny and conceited personality is almost completely sucked out to make him a generic villain that only issues exposition and threats.
! The Eggman Empire is bland as hell. When I first learned Eggman taking over the world would be the premise, I expected natural environments being torn down and having giant buildings and theme parks with his face plastered everywhere and statues being erected in his kooky narcissistic glory. Instead, we get:
! Bland grey factories/bases, the Death Egg getting rehashed again, Green Hill with sand and random robot parts in the background at the end of the first level, a casino in a forest that seems like a normal casino Sonic level, and a realistic city being attacked by Eggman robots. How underwhelming. Sonic CD's Bad Futures had dozens of times more creativity than that.
! The designs of his robots are also changed to white-colored generic designs that lose all of the surreal fun they originally had. As if to say that attempting a serious story means you have to ditch having a vibrant creative identity in art-style. You have no idea how frustrated I am that this will likely be the only time we will ever get an "Eggman takes over the world" premise, and this is all we get.
! And here is the most apt description I can use for the game's final boss:
!
!
! That is pathetic.
The only thing that video probably gets right is saying that the Sonic comics can do good serious stories. Which is why Ian Flynn should become the head writer for the video games. But of course, Sonic Team's incompetence will never allow for that. It's like they tried to shove everything they could into this game to make all facets of the Sonic fanbase happy (from Classic fans and Modern gameplay fans to serious Adventure story to fan art creators), but with such a shallow approach that it does none of those groups justice. It only results as a mediocre stew of a whole pantry of ingredients haphazardly poured in that only manages to just barely be edible, yet simultaneously bland.
I think that on a purely theoretical level, Sonic stories can be serious and even "dark" since that's that can be proven to work for the likes of Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper. But in order for that to be done, they need to actually try having qualitative standards by listening to feedback and taking a long break to reevaluate the franchise's creative direction. But Sonic Team most likely will not, as usual.
If you like the game, fine, but I really struggle to find anything that make defending the game worth the trouble besides Eggman hiring a group of jackal mercenaries in the tie-in comic. That was cool and could have been expanded upon, but of course something interesting like that isn't in the game._
! The six months of torture are what I find particularly odd. If you don't want to go balls out and show a haunted Sonic or something, fine, but don't half-measure it. I know Eggman isn't Satan or something, but in a world where he's enslaved most of the world and is about to you, y'know, win, he'd do more to get his enemy out of the way.
! The Jim Cummings Robotnik is in a similar world, yet felt 10x more threatening
@Count:
Eggman's funny and conceited personality is almost completely sucked out to make him a generic villain that only issues exposition and threats.
I can take a half-assed attempt at classic 2D gameplay, neutered boost gameplay, and Original the Character and try to make the best of it. But a boring Eggman is unacceptable for me. Now I know this is a trash game.
@Count:
! The Phantom Ruby's origin and power is inconsistent and random as hell. One minute it makes illusions so real that they hurt people, and by the end of the story Eggman tries to create a giant sun to smash into the earth with it (even though it will destroy him with his entire empire).
Oh great they brought that back huh?
@Count:
! He also just disappears when he's defeated and we have no idea what happens to him, so he was a waste of time we will probably never see again.
Beyond cameos, guests spots….or illusions like Zavok.
@Count:
! The Eggman Empire is bland as hell. When I first learned Eggman taking over the world would be the premise, I expected natural environments being torn down and having giant buildings and theme parks with his face plastered everywhere and statues being erected in his kooky narcissistic glory.
Given we kind of got that with Eggmanland and the theme park from Colors would be a bit redundant…..though with them bringing back Green Hill Zone and Classic Sonic that'd be a bit of a double standard.
@Count:
! But in order for that to be done, they need to actually try having qualitative standards by listening to feedback and taking a long break to reevaluate the franchise's creative direction. But Sonic Team most likely will not, as usual.
More like Sega won't reevaluate the series creative direction because they're scared of publishing ambitious Sonic titles.
