One Piece Opening 20: "Hope" by Namie Amuro (1st October 2017)
-
Oh hey, they're actually (kinda) using my idea!
-
Huh, art looks pretty good for the most part. Excited!
-
Toei still too lazy to come up with new outfits.
-
While the screenshots look interesting.
I can't get over the fact they're still promoting the Fishman Island arc outfits, plus showing the crew on the ship, really really hope this scene is two seconds long or something. -
Well I'm liking the apparent Sanji focus so far. That still shot of BM is not the best but eh what can you do?
Seems the trend of SHs doing wacky stuff on the ship continues but I don't really mind too much, just stay away from any sunset moments and I'm good. In fact if anything, I'd love if they took this chance to show personal individual moments between Sanji and the rest of the crew. Sanji feeding Luff, Sanji hanging with Usopp, partying with Brook, playing with Chopper, etc. Idk, sounds like it'd be a nice touch all things considered.
I'm also expecting Zeff to be in it somewhere too hopefully.
Reiju and her mom look outstanding, really hoping Ichikawa was all over this opening from start to finish. And yeah they need to retire the FI attire ASAP. Give them some real, actually good clothes already. A bikini top and some jeans is NOT an outfit Nami, it's just not.
-
Looking forward to seeing if my checklist is right.
-
Should probably censor Big Mom's cheeks and nose in that shot.
-
Another generic fishman island-era sunny shot. Who could have guessed?
That Luffy shot almost made me vomit so I had to fix it
-
It looks good so far, don't know what you're on about
-
Every opening all the way back to the original We Are! except for two have had sequences of the Straw Hats hanging around on their ship or otherwise goofing off so I don't have any problems with that as long as it doesn't get in the way of more interesting footage. As has been said, hopefully here they use them to contrast Sanji's different situations.
I don't really get the obsession with the timeskip outfits either though. Like I get wanting to have a default look, but that never concerned them before, change is always good, and I've cooled considerably to some of them over the years. It makes me wonder what they're going to do when the crew inevitably adds to their number. Like, would they stick Jimbei in his marijuana leaf outfit from Fishman Island (which is actually my favorite of his outfits BTW) or whatever he happens to be wearing when it's finally made official? What about other hypotheticals like say Carrot or Future Wano Character or whomever? What then?
Anyway since we've got confirmation of wedding footage being showcased I'm looking forward to seeing (and possibly being revolted by) the colorschemes of the Straw Hats' new outfits and those of the other new characters.

Looked good before to me.. I like what you made tho, it's more koizumi pre ts-ish but it'll probably be better to let go of the past for now

It looks great overall, don't get me wrong, I just don't like the way they draw Luffy.

The thing that annoyed me the most was the big piece of hair in the middle, it looks off, as well as his eyes. They're waaaaay too circular. I don't think I'm ever letting go of Koizumi's designs, I just can't. I started with the anime. To me, Koizumi's designs look more like Luffy than Oda's or Hisada's.
-
Pfft. Of course you edited an obviously inbetween shot of Luffy running just because he doesn't look the way you want him to. :getlost:
Koizumi's era is long gone. Get over it and move on.
-
I hate the post-ts default outfits too, especially on Ussop, Robin and Nami. Give them something new already! The crewmembers who are not on WCI atm shouldnt get too much screentime anyway and leave room for Carrot, Pedro, Pekoms, Jimbe.
The rest looks good though.I'm more worried they'll spoil big moments of the arc up until after the ceremony, like Pudding's reveal, Bege's alliance or Katakuri's design. Hopefully, they'll leave that out and change some stuff as the story goes along. The ceremony will probably not start before like March 2018.

Well, yeah, what's wrong with that? Whether it's an inbetween or not, I still don't like the way he looks.

Based on your previous comments, Luffy will never look right to you unless Koizumi becomes the animation director again.
Clinging to the past isn't healthy. -

I imagine the wedding part is going to be like the Marineford clips from the twelfth opening where they panned over the assembly and showed the major players, so I can't imagine characters like Katakuri are going to be left out. Heck, I won't even be mad if they hint at
! Pedro's sacrifice since that seems to fit with the kind of song it'll be. So-and-so's true nature however, should be hands-off.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Actually, if Hope is Search for the Wind's mirror universe good twin, I'll be satisfied.

Clinging to the past isn't healthy.Yep, pretty much. Hisada is by no means a bad character designer, I just feel like changing the design after such a long time, and to such a big extent, is bad for the series. I'm completely aware that it's unhealthy to cling to the old designs, because it has undoubtedly affected my enjoyment of the series after the change, but it's not easy to accept.

Jinbei not with the whole SH Crew = horrible opening :ninja:
Judging from the still images, the art looks very well done (I did like Jaki's edit to Luffy with the bolder lines and colors, reminded me of the pre-ts art). Now, to see it in action…

I liked that opening more than the last two (although i prefer the songs of the last two honestly). All the shots of Sanji are well done except for that cape is way too big. It doesn't even make sense. The shots of all the big players and their relationships was good. Perospero's colour scheme though. Geez.

The new song has a dubstep vibe. lol
Never thought I say this for a One Piece opening?
At least the animation is good.

Opening 20 (HD)
-
I loved the opening, but Brulee really should have been in the spot of Compote in those shots
-
How ironic that when I saw to get over Koizumi, he ends up returning to do a few cuts in episode 808.

This post is deleted!

IMO, this opening is shitty. The sound is completely unsuitable with the the images. Sanji's coat is a camp tent :v
-
Gonna throw out my checklist and predictions for this opening. See how many I can tick off. Show me yours!
1. Straw Hats stare into the sunset or some faraway thing while on the boat.
2. Straw Hats are doing some mundane everyday activity on the sunny
3. Zoro and Sanji Fighting
4. Nami and Robin lounging around (bonus point if they are in bikinis or scantily dressed)
5. Luffy running around goofing off
6. Nami getting caught in the shower and getting mad
7. Smash cut of several different groups of people (Warlords, Emperors, Big Mom crew, Vinsmokes, Marines)
8. Epic Group shot before fight.
9. Smash cut of SH flashbacks.
10. Ace flashback
11. Luffy going Gear 4
12. Shanks showing up smiling.
13. Robin reading, Sanji cooking, Brooke playing his violin
14. Last 15-30 seconds are cuts of arc related stuff.
15. Animated Colorspreads.
In a surprising twist, I only got 1, 7, 8 and 11.
Overall good song, and a different opening from the last few we've gotten. Very arc related and that's a welcome change.
-
Remember when Zoro done that during the Wedding? Shame they didn't put in the opening.:V

The thing about the pre-timeskip openings is even when they had shots of the crew in their "default" outfits they tended to have a huge variety of costume choices from the 3rd opening on. Since the timeskip it's like the opening directors forgot how to effectively utilize all of Oda's wardrobe choices outside of the "in-arc" parts of the opening. I don't mind if we have Luffy's default outfit since it's rather iconic but the animators have been doing this show for 800 + episodes now. They KNOW how to come up with creative outfits for the other Straw Hats.

After listening to the song a few times. It feels very much like a song that people use to make fake One Piece openings.
But damn is Amuro a good singer.
-

¯_(ツ)_/¯
He was actually CO-animation director for 808, not just a KA. This is the first time Koizumi has supervised an episode since 295!

That sucked. I was looking forward to seeing him with them. They spent too much time on other stuff.
-
Jinbe's hardly even a big deal this arc aside from saving Luffy/Nami and dismissing Big Mom. He got an appropriate amount of time in the opening. Sanji got plenty of focus though, which is really good considering he is important. Pretty good opening. Not sure how it'll rank among the others with time, but I got a better first impression than the previous one which was generic as all hell.
-
I don't know, the song is nice and all, but it doesn't fit with the images at all. Definitely a below average intro.
Also, i'm surprised Compote is in the intro. Will she do something of significance later on? I mean she appears more often than Smoothie. At least Brulee should have appeared once. As a plot device she has been the most prominent child of big mom since her introduction. -

Like I said about the last intro, it would be better if they just focused more what the current arc entails rather then showcasing "Hey your watching One Piece". They don't have to give away too much of what's incoming but try to tell a story of what the current situation the crew is in. This intro just throws bits all over the place, one minute something current story releated, next its back to the SH enjoying themselves.
Yeah overall average. Not the worst, but nowhere close to one of faves.
-
Great!!! Very Cool
-
The song is really bad It's what i call a droney song, it doesn't have highs lows or direction. It just drones one
-
I've warmed considerably to the opening after listening to it over a dozen or so times.
It's different yes, but after the same basic premise of openings since after Fight Together, this is fresh air.
-
Am I the only one that noticed that Zoro's skin color is a little lighter in this opening?
-
The song is great but the opening is decent at best. Atleast it's a bit better than the previous ones.
I think the problem of One Piece's openings since the time skip is the "need" to always make the generic shots (like showing all the SHs doing whatever in Sunny, or repeated shots of the villains). That takes some content from it and just make it seems a bit of a mess.
This is supposed to be "Hope", and they could've used this theme to make an entire opening centering Sanji, showing how Luffy and the others make him believe that he can escape the dark path laid ahead for him, how he can have hope to continue chasing after his dream with his friends. We kind of have that there, but it's just a bunch of shots cobbled together with the rest.
It's always like this, we can't have a great unique opening that makes people really wonder about what's going to happen. After all, what we really need is another opening like the last five/six ones where Luffy will smile looking at the horizon atleast two or three times! Sigh.
-
Anime refuses to animate cover stories and openings refuse to animate color spreads.
-
I am getting so tired of every intro being the Straw Hats randomly running towards the camera.
-
I've been watching this opening a lot…something I haven't done in a while. It's catchy. The animation is paced well, and I especially like the animation in the montage between Pedro/Tamago, Brooke, Chopper and Carrot, and ending in Luffy using Gear 4. I like that this opening foregoes the montages of famous pirates and instead focuses on the cast of the current arc--appropriate since they're all world class pirates. Even the song fits, and I like how the music starts and stops with the action.
What was with that one shot of Judge though. Like, we see his kids in this flashy montage, and he just take a few steps forward in a poorly lit shot. Is it cause Judge kind of sucks? Is that why? It's weird.
-
I don't think anyone cares much for Judge, no. Looking around the net you see the Vinsmoke siblings show up in a decent amount of fan work, but not their old man so much. Must be the Wario cleft chin.
I wonder if the arc clips will be updated after a certain point like they were in "Wake Up!" and "We Can!" If they are I'd would showcase snippets of
! everyone running from Big Mom, Nami attacking with Zeus, Katakuri matching Luffy's Red Hawk from 877, and maybe Carrot and the others reacting to Pedro's demise.
-

Not sure about it, but I think the flashy montage with the kids are inspired by this scene in the manga : https://jaiminisbox.com/reader/read/one-piece-2/en/0/869/page/9
And about Judge, it's when
! he leaves bege's castle with his kids to give the other an opportunities to flee https://jaiminisbox.com/reader/read/one-piece-2/en/0/870/page/12

Found that OP 17 goes pretty nicely with this opening's song:
