I expect Luffy to go to G4 now - only to get perfectly countered as well. My guess is that Luffy actually will gain Katakuri's respect due to his will and determination coupled with some crazy-ass inventive fighting-style. Luffy definitely will stand his ground, but I dunno how conclusive this fight will be overall, because let's face it: While this sure as hell is an awesome battle, it just doesn't work as the climactic final battle of this arc - while brings us back to Big Mom and the cake scenario.

For the actual climactic battle I expect Luffy and Kata to team up in order to deliver the cake to Big Mom who at that point completely lost her mind. And I guess then Kata will also mirror some of Luffy's will and determination in order to successfully stand up against BM at the very climax.

It took him 3 times to beat croc, he got his ass whopped by lucci and aokji and thanks to these losses luffy developed gear 2 by observing the CP9. I want the same thing for this fight. I want to him to either lose or escape and after that reflect on the fight and use it to create something better. Its makes no sense for luffy to beat katakuri at this rate. He needed to recieve help to defeat cracker from nami. He also needed help to defeat doflamingo. For luffy to go from anthat to solo-ing one of the strongest yonkou commanders in BM pirate crew is ridiculous. Why would Luffy need to learn from Katakuri when he already has experience from Doffy, cracker, Caesar, and Hody. It would make more sense if he has already learned something and is either holding it back (as he has done in the past) or hasn't quite put it together yet. Luffy expects to be able to beat admiral level folk at this point and I think his expectations are at least a hint to what his upper power limits are now.

For Luffy to flat out trounce Katakuri with no trouble would be absurd.
However, as has been beaten over our heads, Luffy is not at the point of having the option of running away when it absolutely positively must count. This is the Luffy we will see conquer the Grand Line and therefore any growth that he hasn't already done must occur before our eyes.

I condense this point to a few words in the next column but the general idea is, Oda is deliberately showing us that Luffy cannot win this battle with what he's previously shown us.

So ask yourselves, what can he do?

Are we in line for another powerup?

Or is he going to get creative?

Or both?

I'd guess it's somewhere in the realm of both. My personal theory is that Katakuri relies too much on his Foresight and is generally kind of lax when he doesn't notice an imminent threat.

My thinking is that Conqueror's Haki might have the effect of disrupting the other two kinds of Haki if it's strong enough. It would give it a more relevant effect than visual flash and mook remove, and it underlines the special qualities of those ambitious enough to manifest it. Katakuri with Foresight is almost invincible, but without it there's a chance.

There is the water weakness presented by jimbei ever since the wedding. It was the reason cracker got defeated and reason why crocodile was defeated, so why not explore this weakness now too. Only question is, where the heck will luffy find some water. Not that I would not like some more creative way for luffy to beat him. Maybe he has clone jutsu? He learned it from raizou in zou, that should mess with katakuri's CoO. Katakuri can focus on 1 luffy at a time ,but what if 10 luffy attacks hi mat the same time?

Hmm, I stick with the clones jutsu as prediction. But dunno if this is awakening, gear 5, or just the 3rd version of gear 4. He also saw doflamingo use clones of himself, not just raizou, mr 3 too.

Like I said. He's going to grow and develop, and already is, but it will be during the fight. I'm sure he's going to learn from Katakuri, but it'll be a lesson hell figure out now, or for his next fight.

I've been hoping for a while to see Conqueror Haki applied more directly, against a stronger opponent. We've seen it can cause physical damage before, so maybe it involves other stuff as well. Disrupting concentration or predictive abilities as you say.

On the other hand, there's awakening, and in front of him Luffy has a clear example of what he could do if he had more control over his devil fruit.

Then there's G4 and more possible forms. Maybe he has a form more oriented against fast opponents. Frankly, it would be weird if Luffy didn't consider something like that. But then why not use it against Dofla? Unless he only perfected it after Dressrosa.

Not really sure what kind of weakness Luffy could exploit inside of Mirror World. One thing that comes to mind are mirrors themselves. Perhaps he could find a way to gain an edge over Katakuri with reflections. Not sure how, at this point.

Doubt it's possible without any power up. It doesn't even have to be a big one, because it should be a pretty close win, as it always is when Luffy faces someone with superior skills.

What has bothered me about katakuri, is how his future vision seems more like actual future vision than advanced mantra as it was advertised.

Luffy already overcame Enel with "not knowing" but of katakuri can know more of the plan in advance, he'd just get more space between them instead of the bouncing working

The thing is, Oda very rarely goes for clever when it comes for final fights. After show off of Croco's powers and Luffy's creativity in their round 1 and Mizu Luffy in round 2, the last round was just mano-a-mano with Croco barely using his powers. After another show off of Luffy's creativity against Enel, their last round was Enel attaining random new form and Luffy punching him really hard. Moria and Caesar who are some of the more versatile fighters Luffy faced also went for transformation and being destroyed by Luffy in the end.

The only time Luffy fought the last battle on his own and it didn't come down to Luffy just physically dominating his opponent was in Davy Back Fight if memory serves me right. That's why I think we should be prepared for Katakuri becoming super-mochiman (like his version or Tank Man or whatever) and Luffy punching real hard in response (I obviously hope it's not the case, though).

Honestly I'm mostly hoping the rest of the fight can be more than just G4 > Fail > Powerup > R0fl0l I 0wnz U, and also that said powerup won't be something Luffy had all along like G4 in Dressrosa. If we get to see some creative thinking and further struggle on his part before the inevitable step-up, I will be content.

Exactly this. Speaking of the cake baking we have to ask the right question. It's not whether there will go something wrong, it's WHEN will there go something wrong?

My guess is things will go very wrong very quick. And out of the three ongoing major plotlines (Luffy, Sunny and Cake) I guess the Sunny and the Cake plotline are first which will get interconnected. Which will lead to Big Mom interfering the cooking process - which really doesn't sound too boring, right?

No easy background process for sure. I had in mind the following for the next 3-5 chapters:

• next chapter, Luffy vs Kata reaches a turning point (G4 or preferably something else) that evens the odds and goes off-panel with some brief action flashes (the battle enters a phase of attrition, not everything needs to be shown)
• main focus shifts to the cake team and their action cooking (I fully agree, if we're taking the cake road then better make it entertaining)
• over the next couple of chapters, they manage to rendez-vous with / are caught up by the Sunny team and Big Mom's fleet. Total Mayhem Cooking ensues.
• quick updates of Luffy vs Kata and possibly the Capone / Vinsmoke fronts are flashed every now and then
• Luffy vs Kata should conclude at about the same time as the cake, possibly taking back the focus before the cake is served or with the shocking-conclusion-then-flashback pattern that Oda is so fond of.
• Big Mom devours the cake. She is probably still intent on murdering the Straw Hats afterwards, which is when Pudding resolves that she will use of her memory powers.
• Somewhere in between, Pound is relevant to something for some reason.
• Smoothie is never heard of again. A future cover story reveals how she had always dreamed of opening her own bar and slipped away when Mama began her rampage.

And Luffy still went along with it without obstructing the plan in any way. Unlike wanting to prevent Crocodile from taking Whitebeard's head, likely because he was a friend of Ace's. I don't mind Luffy teaming up with Bege and I love this manga getting more morally complex like how selfish pirates would actually act. I think it makes sense for Luffy since everybody hates Big Mom, and he generally disposes of villains in ways that might kill them without caring but Oda always having them stay alive by coincidence.

But one of Daz's big complaints about this arc that he's made clear on the forum is not liking how the Straw Hats team up with Bege without reservations towards his plan, that it contradicts why Krieg was such a despicable villain. I disagree with him, but I get where he's coming from.

Oda's explanation for that was dedicating a chapter to Luffy trying to clobber Bege. That's all he needed. The only thing that's out of character is that Luffy is thinking cool-headed and logically. I'll chalk that up to him understanding the predicament everyone could be in due to his own actions or in this case, a choice not to act.

It's unlike Luffy but Oda was very clear in making us see that Luffy wasn't satisfied with the choice.

That's pretty much it. Luffy wanting to punch Bege for Pekoms was like when Luffy refused to let Crocodile out until Ivankov convinced him. Which I'm totally fine with. I got way more fun out of this alliance more than I ever did with Luffy and Law lol.
