One the latets One Piece Podcast, Stephen pointed out that this is very unlikely

Got my raw Jump. Here are some info revealed in a special manga about Oda drawn by Toriko's author. Redon kindly posted the pics above. I hope Viz Jump will include the translated version of this manga.
-
Shimabukuro (Toriko's author) considers he is level 5 mangaka and Oda is level 99 or more.
-
Oda talked with Shimabukuro very politely when they first met. This was because Oda was worried that he would speak in his Kumamoto-dialect accidentally if he talked casually.
-
Before his debut as a mangaka, Oda shouted in a party that he felt like playing Final Fantasy when his manga was rejected by edtors' meeting
-
When Shimabukuro's manga chapter 1 ranked 1st in Jump, Oda sent him a message to celebrate via FAX. Shimabukuro still owns the message from Oda now.
-
Both Oda and Shimabukuro regret that they should have used a pen-name instead of their real name.
-
Shimabukuro says he receives manga energy from Oda every time they meet.
-
Shimabukuro once asked Oda for his autograph and message to encourage Shimabukuro's little sister who was hospitalized in 2003.
Oda gladly drew it for him. Shimabukuro says he can't forget his sister's voice in joy when she received it. -
Oda doesn't have a chief assistant since he thinks having a chief assistant between Oda and normal assistants would complicate their relationships.
-
Oda says he feels more clear headed with less than 2 hours' sleep…
-
Shimabukuro says Oda has been full of confidence and has not lost any energy toward manga since they met for the first time.
-
Shimabukuro's message to Oda in the last page:
"Oda-san, congratulations for the 20th anniversary of ONE PIECE!!
Be sure to keep running with Straw Hats the legendary sea route which no one has ever stepped into before!!
(Take care of your health!!) ___Shimaboo (nickname) as your friend/brother-in-arms/fan"Oda's drawing around 1996/97[hide]

Well, there's always fan-translations, which depends on if anyone has the time to take out of their lives to translate the thing.

That's not untrue…

It's cool

My copy of the pack with the very first issue Shonen Jump #1/1968 and double issue #3-4/1995 arrived today. The next pack will contain issue 1997/#34 (first One Piece chapter) and double issue 1987/#1-2 containing the first chapter of Jojo

It's July 19!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ONE PIECE!
-
You premature jerk, you know the official date is the 22nd :ninja:
-
-
@Kaido:
Check Redon's OP
Check Greg's explanation. The day the Jump issue with chapter 1 came out was, effectively, 19/7/97, but the official date printed on the magazine was 22/7/97. It's just that Jump releases earlier than its official date due to distribution reasons. So we're all free to celebrate either the 19 or 22 as the anniversary, but shueisha uses the 22nd
-
Am I late to the party? I bought the cake.
Happy 20th Birthday, One Piece!

Shueisha uses 22nd July becouse it's the official release date for all the people in Japan.
Yes, all we know that we can read Jump chapters days before official release date. For example, today we can read chapters from scanllations on Thursday, but a few months ago we read them on Wednesday (sometimes even on Tuesday). That's becouse some people in Japan can get early Jump "illegally" in stores, but it's only a small group if people. And it's the same for videogames, films, books… some people can get all these products days before official release date.
That means Jump's release date today is on Thursday? No, it's on Monday becouse that's the day where 100% of people in Japan can buy Jump completely sure in stores.
For me 19th July 1997 it's not OK neither, it's like Thursday today.
For me real anniversary is the day where Oda finished One Piece chapter 1 manuscript. Maybe Greg can ask him if he remembers that day, or we can send a question to SBS asking Oda directly
Of course it's only my opinion
-
Thank you Eiichiro Oda and his whole team for this wonderful piece of art.

That is not the same with scanlations today. Back then the release date of Jump was advertised for Tuesday, however the shops were allowed to sell Jumps officially on monday. Because the 21th in 1997 was a holiday (monday) the official release date was Saturday 19th. The difference is, shops today are not allowed to sell Jumps before the official release date (before monday/saturday) except for a regional not national holidays in certain cases. Back then Jump was advertised due distribution reasons for Tuesday but it was officially sold at the shops on mondays when available. Now it is different and for all shops the official date to sell Jump is monday
-
I see. I think the 19th is legitimate, but I'll just celebrate both days - great excuse to party more
-
I dunno, as every date (conception is impossible, because the idea was in oda's mind since childhood, proposition is dumb because it's just a meeting, submission is just so private and arbitrary that only oda and a handful of editors know, first sale is arbitrary as not everyone who was intended to get it, got it that day, and the Magazine day is a lie) has it's own set of issues.
I'm tempted to just go "Whenever Jump #34 of that year releases".
-
Why don't we have a continuous celebration that lasts from the 19th to the 22nd? The set of days where people from all of Japan could buy the magazine? 4 day-long party sounds great to me
-

I used "scanllation" as an example to explain some shops in Japan got early Jump even in 1997.
Even if japanese shops were allowed to sell Jump officially on Monday in 1997, not all shops in Japan had Jump on Monday.
If Shueisha used Tuesday as Jump official release date in 1997 it's becouse they couldn't promise Jump were on sale in all japanese shops on Monday.
Changing the subject, for me it's a stupid question. It's irrelevant if true anniversary is 3 days sooner or later

Thanks Captain obvicous. I m well aware of the reason. Just read your own post again: Your argument was based on the illegal streetday and therefore your comparison isn´t really valid. That is my point. I don´t care when people celebrate the One Piece day
-
No. My argument is based on these scans.
Even if a big number of shops in Japan had and sold officially Jump on 19th July, it's on 22nd July when ALL japanese shops had Jump in their bookcases.
That's all.

For God´s sake. I didn´t aruge against your 22nd July day as the official date. I argued against your comparison with scanlations that they come out before the official streetday and because of that some people would say the 19th might be the "official day". But that is in that sense wrong because Shops in Japan were allowed on Monday/Saturday (when Monday was a national holiday). That is my point. I m pretty sure leaks of Jump back then appeared before the 19th. There is a reason that Shueisha switched the advertisement date to monday a couple of years later, because it was the intended release date of Jump and they were able to distribute the magazines until monday. Like I Said, your comparison was the target of my post not the topic of "official One Piece date".
-
some people just need to argue endlessly on internet forums over tiny details..

No redon.
You should watch the video.
It wasn't illegally released.
It was officially released on the 19th. There were distribution issues. It had nothing to do with early buyers.
You are correct that the 22nd was for all people of Japan.
But One Piece was without doubt available on the 19th for the first time legally in parts of urban Japan.
I confirmed this with a top source within Shueisha as well.
That's not to say 22nd doesn't deserve to be celebrated.
I'm just saying, it's important to know that OP was first legally available on July 19th.
-
Thank you so much for those precious scans, redon!
Here is my summary for a manga about a steak restaurant where Oda worked part-time in high school days. This manga was released today. You can read it online.
https://shonenjumpplus.com/article/entry/heppoko_06- Baratie in ONE PIECE is based on this restaurant called Baratei.
- Editor Naito and others visited the main store of Baratei. Oda worked in the branch store, but it was closed long before.
- Tasaki-san, a cook in the restaurant, scolded Oda so much when Oda was working there.
- Oda broke many plates unintentionally.
- Oda often snitched foods without doing his work (washing plates) .
- Oda accidentally disposed of a lot of soup.
- Tasaki-san didn't know Oda intended to become a mangaka.
- Oda got involved in a car accident on a seat next to the driver. He broke his nose bone and got hospitalized for a whole day. It was only 3 days before the deadline for his manga titled "Wanted!".
- Oda has not visited Baratei since ONE PIECE started. He even doesn't have enough time to visit Kumamoto (Oda's hometown) for these several years.
- The staffs in Baratei and Oda frequently played a bowling.
- Tasaki-san asks Oda to visit his restaurant since he would retire in 5 years or so.

My point is true anniversary was when 100% japanese readers could buy Weekly Shonen Jump and read One Piece chapter 1.
Jump was available, without doubt, on the 19th July in parts of urban Japan? Sure, your sources are the best. Maybe it was available even the 18th July in some stores, who knows.
100% of japanese readers could buy Jump on the 19th July? No.
That's why for me One Piece Anniversary is the 22th July

Nope, wasn't available on the 18th.
That's because it was released as delivered. A practice not in place today.
Very different culture then.
Hey, celebrate whenever you like! That's my hope!
But don't flat out deny it.
It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

It's just announced by Shueisha that ONE PIECE will get a live-action adaptation via TV series in Hollywood (Tomorrow Studios).

Curious how they'll handle Arlong and his guys. Or anyone over 7 feet tall. Or Luffy's stretching. Or Zoro's Santoryu. Or…....anything, really.
-
eh .
-
I feel like this is what everyone hoped WOULDN'T happen.

I feel like this is what everyone hoped WOULDN'T happen.
I mean, unless it's utter dreck, I don't mind, but of all the mangas for live-action adaption, this is one that's pretty darn hard to do.
-
I never asked for this.

I never asked for this.

I'm never a fan of live-action adaptations… Still going to check this out out of sheer curiosity, to see how as Amigo points out, they handle literally anything haha.

Oda's comment about live-adaptation [hide]
[/hide]Oda says to the live-adaptation staffs, "Do not betray ONE PIECE fans who have been supporting us for 20 years." He also says, "Some people may be worried about this project, but don't miss it!"Live-adaptation of OP has been brought up many times. Oda agreed to the idea 3 years ago.
Marty Adelstein in Tomorrow Studios made a comment:
I've been enjoying ONE PIECE for 20 years. This live-adaptation project will require the largest amount of money in TV series history. It's well-deserved considering people around the world pay attention to ONE PIECE. -
I wonder how they will do the stretching or what a season will cover. East blue could work but I'm not sure it would retain much followers if it finish by entering grand line. . From begenning of grandline to Alabasta could work. Or start at the end of Grandline and finish at Alabasta. Aside from that I'm not really sure what can work.
-
@All:
I never asked for this.
@Count:
I never asked for this.
I probably asked for this.
-
Um…so was that the big announcement, or...?
-
So, on a scale of 1/10, how bishonen-like are Luffy, Sanji and Zoro going to look like?
-
I want to be a part of this. I am furiously googling everything i can about the production company. This is like my one big dream in life.
-
This live-adaptation project reminds me of ONE PIECE Kabuki-adaptation in 2015. It focused on Marineford Summit War.
-
I will sleep with all of Hollywood
Lets get hollyweird
-
Is this a Japanese language adaptation or an English language one?
-
Oh boy oh boy, the second coming of Dragon Ball Evolution! This is the best 20th birthday present ever!
-
English. Likely a cable or streaming show.
-
Is this a Japanese language adaptation or an English language one?
It's by Tomorrow Studios, so it'll be English.
