Attack on Titan: Why Genocide Is Sometimes Kind of Okay

translation looks fucking terrible
-
Wow. The titans suddenly became so underwhelmed that even Reiner is being treated like a bitch in the end.
This is classic Shonen.

This is classic Shonen.
No, this is classic history.
The march of technology obsoletes previous levels of military tech. Bows to guns. Line infantry formations to trench warfare. Dropping tons of "dumb" bombs on targets to guided missiles.
They even said prior that titans were becoming obsolete due to technology. If this was just a normal shounen power creep then it would have been new types of titan superpowers turning the old ones into fodder.
-
^
I agree. It is unique take by Ishiyama. We generally have modern day techs being overwhelmed by unnatural superpower, the classic shounen. Here we have a new pattern(the more logical one).
Of course how the story will end regarding the titan power is still open for speculation. -

I'm really enjoying the direction this is going. Four years ago I would not have expected to see titans genuinely threatened by conventional weaponry (complete with in-universe reaction faces by bystanders). I have not been this interested in the series since the initial anime hype.
I remember thinking this during the political arc as well, but I have to give credit to Isayama for trying to make the series about more than just man-eating giants fighting each other. Between the Annie fight and the first Beast/Armored/Colossal titan arc immediately afterwards, the series definitely seemed like it was heading in that direction.
But this is much more interesting. If he can stick the ending well enough, I think the series as a whole will be better for having gone this route.

I had a thought. On another board I follow, the question came up of why Marley would still want the Founding Titan so bad when the closing technology gap is threatening to make Titans obsolete altogether. One person suggested it as a way to control the Wall Titans, but I had another thought: Does the Founding Titan's ability to affect memories only work on Eldians? It might, as I think I recall it being mentioned some people couldn't be manipulated that way. But if they can, then maybe getting the Founding Titan is less a way to cope with technology catching up and more a way to reverse it.
-
I still want to know what type of brainwash Marley did to their Eldian so that they themselves do not twitch a brow to sacrifice their fellow members.

I took it as simple indoctrination. They've got these kids, and possibly Zeke's generation, fully bought into the hype that Eldian are devils.
I also saw a comment wondering if Zeke could undo the Titan forming he forces on those people.
-
The Marley's perspective is all about indoctratinmg it's soldiers and population - very heavy dehumanization of the target (which in this case are the Eldians). How corrupt regimes work and stuff.

The problem is Zeke,Annie,Reiner all seem to be free thinker otherwise. They don't sound like fanatics….

I'm not so sure about that. Annie maybe, but Reiner's conflict from being in deep cover nearly took him over the deep end and Zeke had that comment about Eren being deceived by Grisha when they came face to face. Not to mention turning in his own family when he was a kid. Hitler said you have to get them young and if ever a society in manga was anolgous to the Nazis…
-
Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt all show different effects towards the whole thing.
Reiner obviously has a split persona, Annie really isn't proud over what she's doing (and she too breaks under pressure by the end of it all - I think that's why the reaction was made more significant in the anime) and Bertholdt is just… resigned. He's resigned in a very unsettling manner - indifferent to whatever comes by the end of it all. The time within the walls really made them realize that they're killing innocent people, not "devils" and they have varying reactions to that.
-
Todays episode was again good, liked how Sasha had her time in the spotlight, she is a klutz character done the right way.
This scene was a bit unsettling.
-
I really liked how Sasha's part in the new episode was handled and the filler is very naturally integrated, too.
-
I forgot there was a Titan that small.
-
I was eager to see the scene with Conny and the titan animated, because it is one of my favourite horror scenes in fiction ever. This uncanny, familiar? thing lying there, this unimaginable thought that lingers and holds an unspeakable dreadful nightmare for Conny. An encounter worse than death Junji Ito couldn't write any better.
And I'd say, they quite nailed it. Could've toned down Reiner a bit tho :D
-
That Connie scene and the scene in the darkness were really impactful. I got that kind of subtle unnerving dread just a little in the manga, but the anime sort of really drove it home. Was the same with the small Titan in the episode with Sasha - it almost looked like a actual human at first.
-
I felt really bad for Nanabe, seems that she had a tragic childhood..
-
This episode was pretty great! The action looked great, all the character stuff was conveyed perfectly. Ymir's transformation in particular was great.
-

Yeah that was a bit more traumatic to listen to than a lot of the other deaths. Mostly people are just screaming but she's having some sort of flashback while being eaten alive. It's pretty jacked up to throw in there.
-
Strong episode Overall, im so hyped for next week, we are getting "that revelation".
Look at Berts hand, and Historia blushing for no reason, made me chuckle.
-
No. Seawater is not salty because some old coot pee on it.
-
So… like...
! Is Ymir dead? I have to admit that will really annoy me if she was just seemingly killed in this random 4 year time skip :/
-
So who is fighting who again in this war?
-
those guys this chapter are planning on world dominance and their next step is eren and all on that island
also, titans might be obsolete once planes come into picture -
Someone summarize what happened the last 4 chapters pls :-x could just reread but not feeling like it and I kind of lost track of the plot ala Tokyo Ghoul.
-
Zeke and Reiner returned to Homeland.
Ymir got eaten.
There was some war against the Homeland, and they are choosing knew candidates to the Beast Titan and the Armored one.
All of the 32 ships sent to Paradis have been destroyed.
I guess that's it. -
This week's episode was great! Great action animation, the pacing flowed really well. Also really sad in face of the new manga chapter.
Ymir's death is similar to Bert's and many other characters' in that it just "happens", which is always sad with whatever character it happens. It's because she wanted to pay back to Reiner and Bert, too. She was killed because she cared too much. I don't think either Bert or Ymir are completely "gone" and there might still be some time spent in relation to them because of the connections that are left related to their characters. They're important to Historia, Armin, Reiner etc.
-
! Absolute bs that Ymir's death was off-screened if you ask me.
! If she actually was killed… -
@Oga:

! If she actually was killed…Galliard's the one who did it apparently, so unless we get some post-op moderm memories going this one's a safe bet as gone.

Yep, seems like it. I didn't even like Ymir that much but this has really annoyed me.
-
Remember when this story was about humanity being closed off and one kid trying to kill all the Titans to save humanity? I miss that story.
-
That story would have ran dry in pretty fast and any solution presented would be convoluted af.
I enjoy the direction this is going rather well. -
Yes,me too.We are getting some serious character developments…i like it.
-
Character development is nice, but I kinda want the story to go back to the MAIN characters.
-

I enjoy the direction this is going rather well. Then the story should have ENDED. And then the author could have made a new series about THIS story. This is Tokyo Ghoul all over again. The author got bored of his story and/or so enamored with how popular it is that he hijacks the story and made it go completely off the rails so he can use it as a medium to push his imperialist view points onto his readers because educating people on these socially important issues now takes priority over finishing the damn story he had in the first place in his mind.

I have the feeling that it will take 2 or 3 Chapters, till we see Paradise-Island again, though.
So, only one Year left, for Zeke and Reiner? Good to read that! What a progress in the last Years. At the beginning of the Manga, "the Humanity", was pushed back to his last Wall, now are Eren and Armin defending the whole Coast. A Attack of Marley on P-Island is useless, ImO. Our Heroes were preparing the overcross to the Maincontinent, in the last Years.
Btw. I dont understand the circumstances of the War on the Maincontinent at all. -
Generic european strife. Just that one side could turn soldiers into titans.
-
Wait, I'm totally out of the loop here, but did this series pull a Claymore?
Skimming these last chapters I was sure this was an extended flashback lol
-

Nope, time skip and far off til now unknown war. Unlike Claymore though, we're actually getting involved

there is nothing to support your claim at all. the author knew exactly what his manga is going to be.
from the beginning, he established that the titans are mindless creatures with a size limit, body structure and behavior. yet, the walls were breached by two titans that didn't have any of those characteristics. he basically foreshadowed the titan shifters right from the first chapter.
besides, even if your fantasy story was made instead of this, it wouldn't be a very good one. after all, titans are zombies, they can't play the villain's role all by themselves. there has to be something or someone that the character have to overcome, and lets not fool ourselves now. this is a shounen manga not the walking dead, so off course it not gonna be a something. it has to be someone, a powerful someone. -
Interesting chapter but I'm still in need of more explanations regarding Ymir and the Jaw Titan. I'm not convinced it all makes sense with the data we have so far.

Except many of the things you've said has been there for a long time. Imperialism and a bigger evil was already foreshadowed long ago.
I don't get why it's considered "Hijacking" when it's just the answer to the mystery that we've all been waiting for.
Just because you're not happy with it doesn't mean it's bad.I didn't get the memo but TG and this aren't comparable at all. I don't get your point.
-
until the last panel i didnt get that ymir had the "jaws" power. even when galiard talked about her memories, i was confused how he could see the memories of a different titan.
just a few days ago a buddy asked me for spoilers for what titans actually are, and while i explained to him how the shifters all have different powers i realized that ymir was just a small titan. and now i feel like i wasnt able to add one and one together…Interesting chapter but I'm still in need of more explanations regarding Ymir and the Jaw Titan. I'm not convinced it all makes sense with the data we have so far.
ymir went with them sacrifcing herself for historia.(although i too forgot the detailed circumstances) ymirs jaws had sharp teeth. colt even confirms it with zekes titan. seems like they are different depending on who the user is.
but now there's one slot empty again is it? we counted 9 titans including jaws and ymir.also i guess they dont know about annies petrification, thats why they count her as one of the paridis team
and packmule titan girl looks creepy…
