Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread v.2

Someone on the One Piece Reddit made some connections between Big Moms kids and the children she ate. Not sure how much I buy into this, since it could be because of their influence on her. It seems like a clearer connection than when we were trying to line them up with the party guests.

Count Mario did too here, seemed pretty logical but that was before the 'incident', I don't know what to think now.

Today I submitted something for the One Piece Podcast's "piece together" segment and, for the heck of it, thought I'd share it here too:
When the orphan kids first appeared, there was buzz that maybe they were child versions of guests like De Feld. Now, however, that we know, or can reasonably assume, Linlin went Preschool Titan on her playmates and Mother Carmel, I have an alternate theory: Big Mom enforces a very strict dress code at her Tea Parties, forcing people to dress like her childhood playmates, that nobody has the nerve to say no to.
"You're wearing the panda hood."
"But I don't want to-"
"PANDA HOOD or LIFE?"
"Panda Hood! Panda Hood!"
-
I thought something like this as well. However, what are your thoughts about Carmel? As no one seems to be dressed like her. Is she special like no one can really compare to her and therefore actually replace her? Never ever!
-

That's what the photo was for I think

Hmm, right now I really wish Mr. 2 were there and would pose as her. That'll really be hilarious.
Of course, if his cover were blown, he'd be even deader then the last two times.
-
Mr 2 can't work through pictures, I'd guess. He'd have a few emperors or warlords in his belt if he did.
-
Yeah, he'd to do some more trickery to pull that off. Like he copies some person who looks exactly like Carmel or an older version of her.
! And we totally need Mr. 2 for this instead of using this other person because… don't destroy my awesome Mr. 2 moment!!!
-
Mr 2 can combine parts of faces tho. He could happen to have the needed parts for mother carmel.

Chapter 888 will mark the beginning of the Wano arc.
-
@Don:
Chapter 888 will mark the beginning of the Wano arc.
Could you explain why you think that? Is there any significance in the number relating to Wano?
I'm not sure if it's possible. Whole Cake Island should still take a dozen chapters or so, and following that there will be the usual in-between-arcs stuff. And in this case, that should include the Reverie, since Oda said that we will see it in 2017 right? Or at least that it will start this year.
-

I dunno if it'll even last that long tbh.
We're now at the point where the shit has really hit the fan and the SH's/Bege/Vinsmokes need a quick escape and not really anything else.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this wrapped up within a 5 or 6 chapters, with maybe 2 or 3 chapters of fallout/transition.

Luffy will have a Vinsmoke suit to beat BM

I would assume we´re still having around 20 chapters left this year +-3.
The WCI arc is now for sure approaching his final volume, beginning with the chapter coming out this week.
So having around 10 +-2 chapters to conclude this arc is reasonable.
After that we know we go to the Reverie, which will be around a volume, at least so much content should be covered there, while it won´t be too long without a SH. (besides ViVi)
So WCI will cover vol.87, while Reverie will take most of vol.88, but i assume the last chapter of this volume could be Luffy approaching Wano, having there a perfect cliffhanger for the next volume.
Assuming we get 10 chapters a volume , we would perfectly end vol.88 with chapter 888, which should mark the beginning of Wano in my opinion. -

But aside from the escape not resolving anything like Zeff in the longer run, do we really think they will get their needed escape?
Besides we still need payoff for Sanji.

I was wondering what nothing being resolved with Zeref (from FT) had to do with their escape… shame
-
But aside from the escape not resolving anything like Zeff in the longer run,
Well at this point the whole not killing Zeff thing was based on Sanji's cooperation in the wedding.
Now that's completely off the table.
I doubt we'll get a total resolution to Big Mom's anger towards the SH's by the end of the this arc so I feel like some factor will come out of left field to take Zeff out of the equation.
do we really think they will get their needed escape?
Well yeah, as it stands Big Mom is going to murder the shit out of everyone.
Besides we still need payoff for Sanji.
Since the way Sanji looks at the Vinsmokes has softened (ie. saving them from being assassinated) I don't think it'll take long to wrap that up.
Aside from his family issues being somewhat cleared I don't think Sanji is going to get much more of a payoff.
Although I hope I'm wrong.

I think Perospero is an awakened Devil Fruit user. He can normally control existing candy like he did in this chapter, but his awakening allows him to turn people and maybe objects into candy (like what he threatened to do to Caesar)

Green Bull will be a Sumo-wrestler based Zoan user who makes his debut in Wano.
I mean Oda has to utilize the sumo-niche at some point right? Or does Senior Pink really count as such?

Well, there is Sentomaru.

@S.C.:
Well, there is Sentomaru.
He is a Sumo? Well in that case that big axe sure is distracting.

Yeah, he uses sumo palm thrusts, but also the Axe, too.

Sentomaru is based on Kintaro
a sumo wrestler who carried a giant axe -
also long before Sentomaru

I think Green Bull may be a woman, the word gyū in japanese is genderless, it may also mean cow. Plus since we had all male admirals until now the chances that the last one may be female are significant.

I can't wait to see the Marines show their own Smoothie then.

Marine admirals are weirdly effective compared to the rest of the marines. Maybe a female admiral will be weirdly effective compared to the rest of the females.

I doubt we're going to see her doing anything more conclusive than what Hancock did in her fight with Smoker, aside from feats against fodder or affecting environments.

Hina's more like the Galette/Amande of the Marines. Locking up random fodder is equivalent to slicing King Baum in two and never doing anything for the rest of the arc.

Cracker and Katakuri have done a lot in this arc, and Katakuri has been particularly effective, so I wouldn't bet on the Admirals being a different situation.

Perospero's done more of what we expect from a Sweet Commander than Smoothie at this point.

Well Smoothie seems like a melee fighter while Candy dude and Mochi have long range in their arsenal.

Don't. Just don't. Her portrayal, of all things in this arc, is not worth defending.
How does that compensate for Big Mom outshining her right after her character debut? Or Daifuku and Oven having more intimidating combat panel time than Smoothie grabbing Nami and getting kicked by Reiju?
-
Since Sanji basically reveled Pudding third eye and complimented it, I think its possible that Pudding will somehow give us the first shot full shot of Sanji face without his hair covering something.

If Oda didn't cave in on showing Doffy's eyes, he's not showing Sanji's anytime soon.

One Piece Volume 85 SBS:
D: If Doflamingo took off his glasses, how would he look like? O: Another pair of glasses instantly appears under the glasses. -
I still want an explanation on Jango eyes.

You got a point, based on Oda's record. But in almost every major organization/group there was almost always a female character, both in the Shichibukai and in the Yonkou there is one, and by the importance of the admirals as a group of characters inside the Marines i think there's at least a chance one of them may be a woman. But then, i agree with you that we're not probably going to see her do the same order of feats of her male counterparts. Oda seems to care about variety between characters, that's mostly what makes me think Ryokugyu will be a woman, though he doesn't seem to care that much about giving the same feats to both genders.
-

But why though? It's not like Smoothie is at the center of everything in this arc. She is a mere piece, just like tons of other characters. Or her being a female is supposed to somehow overwrite everything, and become the focus?
I have problems with Oda's female characters too, but this just feels like complaining about the character not matching up with what you want, instead of it being relevant to the narrative at hand.

Because there's absolutely no point in having her be a Sweet Commander if she's not going to contribute to the plot like the other Sweet Commanders. She is a piece, but an emphasized piece due to her title. Yet we get nothing that shows credibility behind having that title, unlike Cracker and Katakuri. The fact that she's the latest example of sidelined female characters is only the icing on the cake for disappointment. Cracker and Katakuri aren't at the center of everything either and aren't too relevant compared to Big Mom and Pudding, yet look at all of the panel time and action they've gotten. It's like Smoothie only exists to check off a quote of there needing to be three Sweet Commanders so that her crew doesn't seem weaker than the other Yonko, but not wanting to go through the effort of actually making her presence matter like her peers.
I don't expect most of Big Mom's crew to get three-dimensional (or even two-dimensional) personalities or notable plot relevance, but Smoothie's title puts her at an emphasized level. Not to mention the roles she gets assigned that get subverted. Being an obstacle to Brook getting into the treasure room and Pedro being a distraction? That got skipped and we end up getting the twist of Big Mom confronting Brook instead. Taking some of the initiative to quell the wedding chaos? That gets lent mostly to Katakuri, while Perospero, Daifuku, and Oven have more agency than Smoothie. Who's too busy wringing drinks at the bar and asking for somebody to do something. It's a lackluster portrayal of wasted potential through and through. She grabbed Nami, but that just follows the trend of Oda always pitting females against females and doesn't stand out due to both Nami being weak and Smoothie getting injured like several of the other minor ranked crewmates in a montage.
I could overlook any one of these things as they are fine and even a bit cool in their own right, but it's the consecutive string of inactivity and uselessness that becomes an issue. It's not even like I need action and action only from her character so that I find it good, I just want, well, anything. But there's nearly nothing besides just… existing.
-
Random thoughts.
Currently the only person at the tea party who doesnt have ear plugs is Big mom.
To me it's pretty clear that bobbins will be returning, and his powers were not teased for no purpose.
I believe he will try to use his powers to knock out the straw hats and co, but will instead put big mom to sleep momentarily.
The straw hats wont be taking down big mom this arc, but in my opinion the force they currenly have is enough to beat big moms subordinates.
Pekoms will surely be making a comeback, and I think he will stop the war AFTER some major opponents like commander katakuri will be takendown.
There just has to be a hype fight after all of this. Pudding's memory fruit will play an important role at the end of this, but the possibilities are just too many to talk about. -

Actually, speaking of dimensions I consider Cracker and Katakuri also one-dimensional. Not that it is necessarily bad, anyway, as they are quite fine as they are. But for me to consider them more than one-dimensional they have to have either some more actual backstory (aside from being Linlin's kids) or they have to made some notable decision (more than just deciding to do some Sweet Commander battle stuff).
Well, but Smoothie hasn't even her first dimension properly. Her main characteristic is that she… exists? Sure, theoretically that could be her main characterization as in she more laid-back. However, than the narrative had to put actually at least a little bit of emphasis on that.

Well, I never said that Cracker and Katakuri were exceptions to the Charlotte Family having bland characters lol. I don't really think it has to be about backstory, but more personality traits, interests, and quirks. But a lot of the Charlotte Family members just do basic operations and spout out generic dialogue that's mostly interchangeable between any of them. This is why I said that Smoothie does not have to solely contribute on an action front like Katakuri and Cracker at the end of my post, and how she can make up for that by being more fleshed out. But we don't get that either. I think he only line she had that hinted at some type of individual personality was questioning Baron Tamago about needing to be there for protection.
Aside from Big Mom and Pudding, I think Bobbin might be the closest thing we have to an actual character from that crew lol. And maybe Opera or Amande.

how can you downplay Brulee's heartbreaking star-crossed romance with Gastino like that
