@Count:
So I'm just going to stick to finally playing Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD in the meantime..
Wind Waker original or HD? :P

Gooood I love this game. Was not expecting this amount of freedom. I keep getting sidetracked because I'm fucking around with things like chopping down trees. And you can climb pretty much everything. Oh it's wonderful.
Controls are totally throwing me off though with the break from some Zelda conventions. I keep trying to roll and nothing's happening, and I flat out forget to jump at times. Breakable weapons is a bit of a downer but there is that moment of desperation I actually enjoy when you run into an enemy, you automatically reach for your sword, there's nothing there, and you go "shit." And I can't believe how many times I've died.
Just taking a break before throwing myself back into this thing.
-
The control scheme is bothersome but adaptable.
The weapon system takes a while, I made the mistake of going back to the start and not using crap weapons and now I have a low number of good weapons.
And I think that I found the Robin Williams Tribute.
-
What's wrong with the control scheme? I've heard a few people mention it ( I don't have the game)
-
By itself it not much, but it isn't zeldalike. All 3d Zelda's had a very standard way of doing things even the waggly ones, here we have a jump button, the context button doesn't have a regular battle application and I have to check the options to see if I can make ztarget switch instead of hold.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I'd wish that the game would give you a cookbook, or sorting the ingredients by their effects. Cooking is pretty straightforward but I'd like to collect the pictures
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Cooking guide:
! If you try to give multiple effects it will fail
Timed effects seem to get overwritten (don't know how to test them)
Regular ingredients (basic shroms, apples, the carp) boost health recovered, but I'm not sure
Multiple of the same of "effects" boost time but not tier.
I think that there are ingredients that boost the "effects"
Timed effects come in 3 tiers, use more of the ingredients to get better effects, I used one of each defense boost for a Juggernaut skewers., level 3 defense.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
And a piece of advice, don't use monster parts. They have better uses latter in the game.
-
There's nothing more fun then climbing a massive mountain and then jumping off and using the gilder to sail over a ton of land.
-
Protip: the chest shrines are super useful, and when you get all of them, on the map it will have a chess icon on the name.
-
By now I've taken on three Divine Beasts, retrieved the Master Sword, cleared many trials, and I still have four entirely unexplored regions on my map. I love this game.
-
I explored the map, found the master sword, but can't take it, and I've avoided the main quest like the plague. Looking for clothes rigth now.
-
Some thoughts on the music:
I see a lot of people down on it, but I'm really enjoying it. There aren't many big tunes that you'd hum, but the soundtracking is really atmospheric, and I think it succeeds in giving the world a very sparsely-populated and untamed feel. It creates this great tension when you're out in the wild that gets relieved when you enter the villages. Plus, I love how a lot of the themes are based on previous Zelda tunes, but not really emphasizing that. Maybe the wilderness could use a few more musical touches, but I think that the minimalism largely works in its favor.
-
Seems like those torches I dropped early on would've been great at this time, but now I need to find wood weapons to use for the time being. Oh well, I can do story stuff later and decided to glide around and do a few more shrines, some which kicked my butt and I will have to attempt at a later time.
-
I'm stumped by one variety of Korok, what to do when in a random place (usually forest) there is a cloud of butterflies or leaves in a mini tornado. I think that it is just a generic "look around" sign, but in most of these cases I found nothing, any hint?
-
! What does the Shenron look-alike do? I've repeatedly tried to ride it, but it refuses to spawn while I'm treading water. The lightning spells it drops are a pain too.
-

! There might be more to it, but when I shot an arrow at it, a scale came off for me to collect. This ended up being essential for a lengthy shrine quest in the Faron region. I have a feeling there may be more to do with it, but that's what I found out.
-
Remember, kids: heat resistance and flame resistance are not the same thing. Apparently.
¯_(ツ)_/¯

! I fought one on an ice mountain that had been corrupted. I've seen some others, but they were not like that. The one had a quest where I had to get the dragon's blessing, that ended in a shrine, so I imagine the others are like it.

Damn, you beat me to it. I only found the Master Sword and started on my third Divine Beast last night, but my body was finally like "Come on, bro, sleep." haha
I did activate all of the towers, though, so my map is now filled out. Filled out, but not explored.

You probably didn't click at the right time, because I've found those and sometimes had to chase them around, but I did find Koroks after successfully inspecting them.
-

Just finished the fourth :P
You'll have plenty of time to catch up tonight, though, as I'm crushed to death under the pile of work I put off to play this thing all weekend.
-
I don't understand how people make progress in this game. Spent like 3-4 hours just in Kakariko and its vicinity fucking around, and then it turns out Hanato is even more massive.
Also, I am completely dyed in purple, and that's how I kept those clothes forever.
-
So far I only explored the areas and visited a lot shirenes and solved side quests - I was so caught up in exploring I didn't even bother to pursue the main quest so far. Funny thing, on the top of one of the mountains near the death mountain two ostrich-like animals saw me, screamed and because they couldn't escape, they jumped off the mountain to their death. That cracked me up.
-
I finally got around doing the first beast. Have to say, every time I think I know what to expect, something new happens and shows just how much thought was put into this game and how the few mechanics they have can be done in so many different ways. Also, got myself to get to the castle and after somehow managing to do that decided to not go in any further because I knew that I would die some how.
-
So is the blue tunic part of a story quest, or are you suppose to find that on your own? Been meddling around before the last shrine and wanted to make sure I didn't miss it.
-
@Mr.:
So is the blue tunic part of a story quest, or are you suppose to find that on your own? Been meddling around before the last shrine and wanted to make sure I didn't miss it.
You get it as part of Link's quest to recover some memories past the plateau.
-
I've only today beaten the first divine beast. Been fucking around so much, is a blast.
! Hinoxes aren't so bad if you have decked out your basic armor (and champion shirt) with the great fairy by Kakariko and just 5 hearts. Even blue hinoxes, which are the only ones I've found so far.
! Also Sidon is now my waifu. Mipha would've wanted it this way. -
-
! The first encounter with Dinraal has been one of the most majestic moments in any game
-
Fucking hell. I glide out with my 4 hearts and starter armour to do epic battle with this horse man I assume is a boss of some sort and after a (few) bouts of tense conflict I finally kill it…. Only to find its apparently a fairly standard enemy. A Lynel or something. And all I got was a tri shot bow and a spear :/
I either crazy suck at this game atm or I was underlevelled and under armoured for some of the standard enemies this game throws at you...
I broke my best broad sword on the fucker, but any fight that allows you to glide down a cliff and land on a dudes back so you can wail on him with your claymore for a bit is one I can't complain too much about :D
-
I remember lynels from other Zeldas, and the first encounter is always painful as fuck.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
You probably didn't click at the right time, because I've found those and sometimes had to chase them around, but I did find Koroks after successfully inspecting them.
Not those, I mean the ones that don't move, but vanish if you move too close. They might not be koroks but just a particle effect for swamps and stuff.
-
I think they might be just tiny insect swarms. I've run into them too, and was confused.
-
First incursion into hyrule castle ended semi catastrophically, lost a ton of arrows and weapons against A Lionel and guardians and all I got were spare parts.
-
Difference between the european limited edition and the japanese collector's edition
!
I guess all things are smaller in Japan. -
Still got two sections of the map to fill out, and it seems like it will be rough ones to do being snowy areas. Yesterday came across an interesting quest which later I need to try again. Putting in spoiler for those who don't want to learn it.
! Decided to get to this island which once you get on there a voice talks to you, and after that takes everything away from you. All you have is your slate techniques and you have to scavenge the island for weapons to fight off enemies. You have to find three orbs and put them onto pedestals to get all your stuff, and two of the orbs aren't too hard to get, but one of them is a pain to get which I somehow was lucky to get my first try but every try after that I couldn't do the same thing that I did before.
Part of me wants to go on one of the story quests, but another part of me wants to just explore and find things. Decisions, decisions.

This game is hilarious
-
I love all of the series references sprinkled throughout this game. Minor spoilers from the world map:
! Mikau Lake, Darmani carved into the Goron mountain, Arbiter's Grounds as a buried ruins in the desert. You know the game is good when even looking at the map is fun, haha.
-
Can anyone explain what I'm to do at the Korok spots where you step on a leaf and a yellow ring appears? I tried firing an arrow through it but nothing, do I glide to them?
-
You have to get to the yellow ring yourself.
-
! Just fought Lynel at the top of the mountain on the way to my first divine beast.
! That fight alone makes this game my number #1 Zelda game. -
! Who makes the fairest maiden? Link or Cloud?
-
Well, I did it. I managed to barely edge out a victory against Ganon with a whole 1 1/2 hearts remaining. I wasn't even at the castle with the intention of fighting, but I walked into the room that happens to trigger it and decided to give a shot, just to see what I could expect. In a word: madness. Calamity is a very fitting moniker for this Ganon. My heart is still pounding. What a rush! I'd like to see the looks on the faces of those that headed straight for the castle after getting the glider. I bet their expressions are priceless (assuming they made it past the front gate).
That said, I still have an insane amount of stuff to do, so I'll preoccupy myself with that after I take a bit of a breather to fully digest that fight. I'll go into it a bit in a spoiler tag:
! Honestly, I got quite lucky during that fight. I was sort of prepared, but not really, so all I had were ingredients to heal with, and luckily they happened to be enough. If I'd been carrying a bit less, I definitely would've lost the fight. Other things that I had available were: the four Divine Beasts, which shoot Ganon and wipe out half his health, the Master Sword, and the special abilities from your dead Champion friends (specifically the Zora and Goron abilities).
! Thanks to Mipha's revives, I managed to not get a game over, and Daruk's ability gave me the chance to completely tank some hits that definitely would've killed me, with the added bonus of leaving Ganon exposed to attack. The Master Sword goes without saying; it's the Blade of Evil's Bane. I'm not sure how the game takes your horses into account, but the one that I had to ride was my very first horse, not Zelda's horse, which I caught for that one side-quest. Maybe it's only that particular horse that you can't use, but yeah, I got stuck with a horse that was slow and a bit disobedient (because I stuck it in a stable as soon as I tamed it). Thankfully, Beast Ganon is pretty slow, so his attacks are cake to avoid. The danger with that form is getting close to him when it comes time to shoot his weak points with the Bow of Light.
! All in all, this is definitely the best final battle I've experienced in a Zelda to date. You really do need to be prepared, because if you're not, Ganon will eat you alive. And even if you're prepared, you're still in for a tough fight.
! Also, Iwata is still listed as Executive Producer, under Kimishima. Rest In Peace. -
This game is so different from all the other Zeldas, and such a sharp contrast to Skyward Sword that I'm surprised that Nintendo was even this gutsy to go in this direction. It paid off splendidly~
I love that you can accidentally discover mechanics and things in this game, like how tall grass that's on fire creates an upward draft because of heat. Or when I ran across a giant Skeleton and a tree was torn down in the middle of our fight, and he picked up the trunk to use it as a weapon.

This game is hilarious
I love the ragdoll physics in this game, they're hysterical.
And because you can tumble down the side of a mountain and be just fine because you had a Mushroom shish kebab halfway through the fall.
I don't know if this leads to a side quest or not, so I'll spoiler it. It's about the girl who's playing hide and seek with her mom in Kakariko.
! the girl keeps shouting stuff like "Where are you mommy? You're really good at hiding!". And then her dad will sit down in a spot to tell her and her sister stories, and anytime he refers to his wife, he mentions her in the past tense. Is… she dead? Is the dad just not telling his kids about this, and letting the little girl carry on thinking her mom's just hiding?
-
I spent ages looking for the Sheikah Tower in the Gerudo Highlands with limited cold resistance and countless deaths and after 3 hours, I realized I was looking in the wrong place through the a little parlay in the internets. Well, at least the world map is complete, but that took a long time.
-
!
here's the amiibo chart with what you can get from them (the smash bros series amiibo anyway) -
I've been going around trying to complete as much as possible before facing the endgame.
I'm a little disappointed that there aren't any real high level challenges in this game. For all you can do to upgrade your armor, find the best weapons, learn recipes, and max out your health and stamina, there really isn't much to challenge it. I wish there was a superboss or two lying around.
It's a minor nitpick in the scheme of things, since most of the game's challenge comes from quests and puzzles, but I'm at a point where even the most powerful enemies are pretty approachable, and their attack/movement patterns are all simple compared to the bosses.
! Would love more stuff like Kohga, for example, existing out in the wild, somewhere to be discovered. As it is, Kohga is the only non-Ganon boss in the game.
! The whitebearded Lionels in the Northwest are pretty tough, but all they can really do is shoot and charge. They really should have given Lionels a boss health bar/music, too, since they make Hinoxes look like a joke. There are a couple other kinds of boss monsters, too, with the giant fish things in the desert, and various elemental rock golems, and while they pose some challenge, they're also pretty simple to deal with once you get used to them.
! I really liked the combat challenges, but though got simple once I found the strongest weapons. I died against first Major Combat Test many times before finally getting it down, but the second one I found didn't even land a hit on me. I guess it doesn't help that they all basically have the same patterns.
! Maybe the DLC will help to rectify this some.Still loving the game as a whole, though! I'm about 66 shrines into collection, and still have a lot of Koroks and quests to find and complete. The diversity of challenges is really impressive and keeping me engaged. Hell, even just wandering around keeps me engaged. I love the crap out of this game, but it's not without some faults. Most of them are just too small to really hurt my enjoyment. This nitpick is more about what more the game could have done right, and not what it did wrong.
-
I guess I'll post some thoughts after a few days of play. So far I've only even uncovered the right side of the map (maybe a third of it, or less), but I've finished two dungeons and a bunch of other shrines, quests, and seed puzzles. I think the world definitely has the right balance when it comes to how much there is to do and explore. I can spend hours sidetracked in little places seeing what I can find, and I feel like I do make progress because most of the time I do find neat things. Shrines are almost all on the easy side but they're fun.
The problem is I think many other things are poorly balanced. Enemies and their drops, which often feel unrewarding and not worth the effort. The cost of pretty much everything is too high given how rare rupees are, meaning a lot of farming for certain things or selling off fairly valuable materials. I feel like the dungeons have really cool themes but just when I get excited about their potential I realize that they're over in 20 minutes at best, with nothing complicated.
And the inventory. Oh god the inventory. It's definitely as bad as I imagined. Actually worse, because the scaling on Korok Seed costs is worse than I anticipated. So far it seems almost Fibonacci-based, which is dreadful. I'm CONSTANTLY having to evaluate what to drop, if anything. And for people saying "it should be obvious what to drop or not!" It isn't. Not when you have to consider various types of weapons (single-handed, slow vs. fast, spears, boomerangs), different element-imbued weapons (ice, fire, electric, guardian), different materials (wood that can burn, metal that can attract electricity, guardian that can reflect), and balance all that with the actual stats and durability of it. It's a huge pain to manage, it makes me never want to use my better gear because it will either get wasted on easy mobs or used up on harder ones, and generally just a major annoyance that makes battle even less attractive, which sucks because I generally like combat (in games other than this one).
And finally, the music is just legitimately bad. I can't get excited about anything with the crap they play. I don't even get a satisfying "you killed a boss!" victory tune for finishing dungeons. I hate that all the towns basically have the classic themes from previous games, but with the melody stripped out. Literally, all you get is the chord changes and some minor background ambience, with no actual melody, and that sums up what I hate about the music; it never lets itself be in the foreground in any capacity. It never enhances a sense of adventure or accomplishment or any emotion other than the bare minimum to avoid silence. Not at all what I ever want.
Still, the amount of secrets and lore and interesting areas to explore is going to keep me playing, because it's legitimately fun. It's just nowhere near a 10/10 game.
! I heard there is some kind of post-game, so maybe that will offer something you want in terms of challenge.
-
I feel like 10/10 makes sense in the context of the other games that reviewers keep giving 8/10 and 9/10 to, namely every other blockbuster AAA title that graces their office.
In that sense, yes, this game deserves a 10 because it puts most every other thing out there that does open world to shame.
But in a context of game reviewers actually having balanced standards and no ridiculous score inflation, then to me a score of 8 or 9 makes sense. Because it IS a game with flaws, and more than one person has pointed out the music, inventory, weapon costing and balance, as well as the fact that on both Wii U and Switch the game lags when in gamepad/docked mode.
Bottom line though, this game really is just stupid fun. I love that in this day and age that we can have a game that is constantly and hilariously surprising people. -

10s are given when the positives overwhelm the negatives.
I can guarantee this is gonna up the standards for certain open-world elements in future games, though. People will inevitable start comparing stuff to BOTW.
-

Yes, every game will have flaws, but when the flaws inhibit weapon usage, discourage players from combat, lead to a sharp cost curve where people have to grind materials to afford others that will leave them better equipped, lead to large segments of game with no auditory feedback in any way, and lead to issues where in the middle of a fight your game hiccups and you momentarily lose track of what you were doing… I mean, I could keep going, but you do understand how flaws actually do affect this game?
The positives do overwhelm the negatives, but not to the point where we talk like this game has no negatives.
-
I seriously doubt reviewers even managed to explore like 20% at best of the world, so giving it a definitive score on a vastly incomplete point of view feels kinda wrong.
So far i don't share that many complaints for music or inventory, they're underwhelming in certain aspects but also fit with the game and i cant elaborate what's better overtime between consistency or innovation (good or bad). Because yes at times i feel restricted and more good music is always welcome, and yet i feel the time spent in villages or other areas with music to be even better. It definitely can be improved in next entries, with maybe a more sinister and creative world too after the "standard" approach BotW has (for the most part at least). But as the first step in open world territory they definitely nailed it.
-
Numeric rating scales are inherently flawed when the criteria are varied and subjective, because there is no such thing as a "perfect" game that can't be surpassed. But at the very least a 10 should ideally be reserved for things so exceptional and revolutionary that their flaws don't amount to much at all compared to what was achieved. BotW is not that.
This probably will become a standard that games compare to, but mostly because it's Zelda and everyone is playing Zelda and talking about Zelda. Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles X has an open world that is just as impressive and does a ton of the stuff right that BotW does wrong. And that's just one game, from the current generation, on a Nintendo console.
