Thank God its not that touch screen-only controlled that was rumored a while back!

Awesome going to buy it definitely ! Cant wait for march 2017 going to start counting the months/days/hours/minutes and seconds down starting now :o
-
Even if it's not only touch screen I wonder if its a touch screen at all.
It's cartridge based. Was that skyrim? Or a generic 1st person dragon slaying game?
-
I nearly spit out my drink
it looks amazing
-
Good if its going to be their handheld, and their console, it will actually have games, I promised myself I wouldn't get fooled after the Wii, and then I ended up buying the Wii U, this looks good, but maybe I'm being fooled again.
I want them to confirm this will be their handheld console for me to actually buy it.
Unfortunately yet again we get a trailer only with Nintendo games(not sure what game was that medieval one), let's see with the lack of gimmick if the 3rd parties will actually make games for it, one of the things Nintendo used to hype Wii, and Wii U "We gun haf a lot of third party support".
P.S. What I mean is I'm not allowing myself to get hyped by Nintendo consoles(if not handhelds) until they actually deliver.
-
I'm pretty hyped now and it's less than half a year away! Better safe some money
-
Good trailer, good looking device, and the name tells you what it does.
a million times better then the wiiu reveal.

NEW SPLATOON HAIRSTYLES I'M CRYING

Gonna blast this when March comes.

Looks like a new game. The map they showed is new, and from the looks of it this one actually supports local multiplayer.
Spla2n confirmed
-
I'm pretty certain that was Skyrim that was shown.
-
Apparently a basketball game too? Lol I thought that was tablet streaming of an actual game.
Also, give me details on that Mario game Nintendo. That was a town!
-
Watched the muted trailer on my break. I was worried the thing would be like iPad sized based on the leaks and clunky for a portable, but it looks like they found a good balance. All right, now to wait for the game trailers…

I think the major thing here however is what the Switch (love this name!) is. The gimmick is based entirely in what the Switch is and not based on assorted gimmicks like motion gyro 3D whatever. It's a dynamic console. The gimmick is in the sheer variety and dynamism there is here. And it's entirely voluntary too!
You could climb a real-ass mountain and then whip out your Switch and climb a mountain in Zelda. -

To everyone wondering: Yes, that was Skyrim being played on the Switch. What a reveal!

Holy mother of god Skyrim on a Nintendo console

Much to my dismay, Super Mario "Switch" just looks like 3D World 2, but maybe I'll hold off on making that assumption for now.
Glad to see a regular controller on the forefront, but a portable-console hybrid is kind of a nightmare for me. I don't want Nintendo merging these two markets.
-
I've not watched the trailer yet since I'm still in class, but I'd like to know.
If me and my brother want to both play a hypothetical new Pokemon game on the Switch and battle each other, would we have to buy another console just to get a second handheld?
Or can the handheld be purchased separately?
Or does one console come with two handhelds? -

there HAS to be a way to have local multiplayer on a single Switch, otherwise that's a dick move to families and college dorms.

Could be, but there's new NPCs (hub world?) and I spotted a heart (life meter?)
Someone in the comments made the prediction that it could be a compromise between 64, Galaxy, and World.

Oh I'm sure there will be for stuff like Mario Kart, Splatoon etc. But in the case of a hypothetical pokemon game, you get one save per game, and can only play one game at a time so you would need two systems to battle/trade etc

Ew, haha. Looks kind of bad? I've never used Wii U in Gamepad mode, only, like I rarely use my 3DS outside of my house, so none of this extra functionality is appealing to me.
On the good side, it doesn't look like Ninty's gimmick du jour will interfere with Gameplay, so it's a return to form control-wise. Also, being able to break off the main pad into two controllers is a nice accommodation, since buying more controllers always sucks. And not having it be dependent on the tv is good, since not everyone has a tv these days.
On the other hand, I'm probably going to use exactly none of this stuff, and the console will still cost me more. Can Ninty just release a cheaper console-only model? Also, judging by the thing's design, games are download only now? I don't care much about physical media, but if Ninty doesn't work on their support for linking games to an account, that could be annoying for a lot of people. Next up, what's the battery life on this thing? The drain's gotta be intense, considering that the console screen powers the controllers, too, and offers wireless support for them. Actually, what's the battery life on those break-off controllers? They seem pretty low-tech at first, but having that local wireless is draining, and they're pretty small in terms of potential battery space. That probably won't be as much of an issue as the portable screen, by itself, but considering those controllers are charged by that screen, it's a drain on the overall life of the portable system. I hope there's a separate charger other than the console dock, so people can reasonably travel with this thing. Or yeah, what happens if you lose or break one of those side controllers, or the console pad? Do you have to buy another full console? I guess this can be compared to losing a handheld, but the console set is the docking bay that connects to the tv, the pad, and the side controllers, and I'm sure each of these things has their own price point. I seem to recall people having trouble with just the Wii U gamepad replacements.
Also, the name is awful. Makes it sound like one of those S&M dudes that does both S and M. Or literally just an electrical appliance. When I saw that come up, I was confused about whether or not Ninty was actually making another console. This would be a minor complaint, by itself, but considering what happened with the Wii U, I think it's worth discussing.
Now that I've cooled down a bit from typing this out, I don't think the impression I'm walking away with is as bad as I initially wanted to believe. Definitely better than the Wii U in every way. I'm just really skeptical about the price point, component battery life, and customer support.
-
Unless hypothetical game works like Pokemon Stadium and can load separate data from different pokemon banks?
-
Looks cool so far. The first Splatoon had no real local multiplayer so I'm a bit worried on that front. That and the battery life. Do I have to charge the controllers too?
-
-
I play local multiplayer in smash all the time…
-
they literally made a gamecube controller adapter to accommodate for local play in smash 4

The question is this: what of backwards compability?
I'm not doubting Wii U games can still be played - the proper controller shown can act like a Pro Controller, and you can see the game on a portable mount just like the Gamepad. But could you even put its disks in the Switch?
And would regular Wii games become Virtual Console with….the Wiimote that wouldn't apply to this? So many questions.
-
Not having backwards compatibility would be like removing a headphone jack on the newest version of your phone.
Who would do that?

I mentioned this in my post, but I don't think the lightswitch accommodates disks at all. Would be a big no no for something expected to move so much during operation. PSP did it, but required some deviations to account for the moving parts (like the disk casing).
Also, we don't know if the portable dealy is a touch screen. If it is, it still can't be used in conjunction with the tv, so things like OG Splatoon wouldn't work at all.

The gameplay mode is straight up incompatible for any game that required both the pad and the tv.

Hmmmm….this is going to be interesting.
I mean, it's not like it's required - the N64 couldn't play SNES games, and the Gamecube couldn't play N64 games. But now, especially with Nintendo losing their footing, having the net of older games can go a long way. I certainly wouldn't want to sell my Wii U (not that I would) only to be out the hundreds of dollars I blew on its games.
-
It's cartridge-based, so there's no disc reader. and by the looks of things, the screen is just a screen. They probably would have shown that if it was the case.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS if the first notes heard at the beginning are some sort of overworld music for Zelda

The same people who made the SNES & N64 and made the newer PS3 models and the PS4:ninja:.

They're going to have to find someway to allow Wii U games because that's going to piss off a lot of people.
I want to play Pokken on Switch without having to get an all new cartridge.

Were the Wii U games on disk downloadable? I didn't use disks, so I have no clue. If they are, then it still depends on Nintendo allowing support for cross-console ownership of downloaded titles, which I'm not even counting on for Virtual Console games, since they've never done that in the past
I'd hold on to the console, regardless, since some games definitely won't be playable on the Switch, even if they let you port whichever few would be compatible.
-

If they require that, they're shooting themselves in the foot. The thing should be able to boot by itself, assuming you can charge it first.

Oh yeah, forgot about the cartridges. Makes sense for a moving console.

Disk downloadable? Er I don't think so.
I've blown too much money on the Wii U in my 2+ years of owning it. You'd have to literally pry it from my hands for me to ever give it up. I toyed with the idea with selling my original Wii (since I know the Wii U can play its games), but I only keep it in case my Gamecube breaks.)

Sorry for quoting the whole bloc, but I wanted to address a couple of things.
First off it's not download only, as you can see in the trailer, games will be cartridge based, so no worries there. Although I do agree that Nintendo needs to sort out their online services.Secondly the whole losing one part of the controller, I'm sure you'll be able to buy a new one (not just one part mind you) separately, rather than buying a whole new system. This isn't the WiiU gamepad, they are simple controllers.
Oh and lastly on battery life of the controllers, I doubt they will have that bad battery life, and if they are in wireless mode, they won't be draining the tablet's battery lol

Yeah, I forgot about the cartridge stuff. Definitely good that there's some method to play not dependent on online connection for purchase.
We'll have to wait and see about the controllers. My concern is that the left and right are also individual parts with separate designs, if only to be the left and right parts of the gamepad mode. Does this mean that Nintendo will package separate left and right replacements? I wouldn't put it past them to package the two together or something. This is all conjecture, but it's a concern.
What I meant by commenting on battery life and the controllers is that using them will drain some power, which it will then retrieve from the tablet, meaning it's still an overall additional drain to the portable system.

Was there a price reveal or will that be later on?

That's a shame. Though I guess we still don't know if porting is a thing at all.
Maybe Ninty is just sweeping the Wii U under the rug quietly, and that's why they didn't focus on exclusive support for the Wii U when they started working on the Switch. Breath of the Wild is coming out on both, and there's going to be a new Splatoon game, or adaptation. Same with Mario Kart. I imagine porting Smash will be easy, too, if they choose to do that, and maybe Mario 3D World (though it seems there's another Mario available on it, too, anyways). This leaves only a few odd games like Star Fox Zero to get completely abandoned in the switch, so to speak.

Wii and GameCube also shared a title but Wii still had backwards compatibility.
But yea, the fact this doesn't seem to support dual screen set ups really sucks for prospects of backwards compatibility for most of the games they made to convince people of why the Wii U mattered.
Also seems like the new Mario Karr is basically 8 with more content, so it's always possible they re-release big titles like those old Smash rumors suggested. Which is a shitty move for those who did invest in the Wii U. -
New Mario Kart had some notable differences, like two item slots (which is a pretty major thing, considering how notable item usage is in MK)
even if it's visually similar, I doubt they'll just repackage 8 wholesale -

A GameXplain video speculated the MK and Splatoon footage could be enhanced porting of their Wii U versions, so who knows.
The 3D Mario is 100% new, this I'm sure of.
