If Im gonna be honest, kind of a weak ending episode.
THREE Seperate reddit comments that sum up my opinion
! Anyone else feel like Steven was a little too out of character in this episode? Like when the kids spooked him with masks, he was like "Oh god I'm going to die" but didn't whip out his shield or use any of his gem training. It seemed like he didn't realize it was children but he didn't respond to the threat in a way that would have been more appropriate. Also how ignorant he was of the clear child roleplay going on in the car scene. It feels like Steven is super conscious of things in most episodes and then they suddenly dial him down to ignorance in ones like this and the new lars.
! I'm sorry but this episode didn't do it for me. Steven's dialogue felt poorly written (I understand that he was the only speaking character, but having him literally explaining everything to the viewers nonstop felt really forced and unnatural) and all of the attempted "drama moments" like the healing scene, squishing a bug, and Onion crying all felt sort of hamfisted and unearned.
I really want to like Lamar and Katie's slice-of-life episodes, I really do… they're really not bad, they're just not good either. And it shows when all of the other storyboarders are stellar.
! Also, it’s not a good idea to have Steven as the only talking character in the episode, because his constant monologue becomes annoying after a while. Not to mention Steven’s comments on everything make a digression from the «show, don’t tell» rule, which is usually done very well in SU.
Biggest disappointment with the episode: not having Steven’s classic «ONIOOOOOON!!». I loved that running gag.
Best gag: Garnet not giving a shit about kids in a trenchcoat because she’s two people in a trenchcoat herself she’s Garnet.
I would probably tie this with the Episode with Marty as my least favorite episode. It just had an odd feel and not much of anything really happened plot wise or even comedy wise. Garnett thumbs up, draw me like one of your fishermen, the pothat implication, it just seemed lacking compared to most
Now comes the soul crushing reality of hiatus.
