I like how Tails looks unsure about this whole thing.
There's even more to this announcement…
“Sonic Boom is meant to branch away from the classic/legacy Sonic. Our plan is to go forward with both the modern Sonic and the legacy Sonic, but the Sonic Team will handle the legacy side of things in Japan. For us, the Western initiatives will tie into the toys, merchandizing, animation – movies potentially even. We’re branching out into the more upbeat adventure style theme for Sonic Boom.”
“Our main target audience is 7-11, but what we saw when we released the first game is that Sonic fans picked it up. That’s a challenge: you’ve got your older audience and younger audience, but the older fans had a harder time getting into it, because it they’re so used to classic and legacy Sonic, and that’s what they thought Shattered Crystal was going to be.”
“It can be tricky sometimes. You’re developing a game that is for an intended audience, but we have a legacy group of people that played the Genesis and Megadrive games. Then you have the audience that played the Dreamcast and GameCube era games. Then you have the modern, younger audience. Each of these three groups is looking for something slightly different. Our challenge is how do you make a game that appeals to everybody. That everyone can play and say, “I like this.” That’s the challenge we’re working with.”
“We have all the Sonic Boom stuff, but we also do classic lines of stuff. There’s all sorts of merchandizing that’s designed to appeal to the older audience and the younger audience. When we first announced the Sonic Boom initiative, the fans were all, “why is Knuckles so big, and why does Sonic have a scarf”. All these little things. But we said, “don’t worry, we’re not taking the old Sonic and getting rid of him.” The original Sonic design is still here and he’s here to stay. They’re just two separate universes that are running parallel to one another.”
“We’re thinking bigger than just the video game. We want to branch out into the Western market a bit more and update Sonic’s look and appeal to a younger age group – the new gamers. And so we wanted to do something exploration-based. We didn’t want to just reboot the classic series. We wanted to do something new – and not alienate the classic players.
And in response to the "issues" in the first game.
“I think we went a bit too far with the exploration in the last game. There were a lot of speed runs and rhythm play sections, but they were so spread out you lost that speed aspect of the game. That was one of the big things that people complained about – “if you slow down Sonic, it doesn’t feel like Sonic.” Now we’re trying to fix that. We want to keep what’s going on in the animated series, the adventure and exploration, but we also want to keep the feel of classic Sonic. So now we’ve made the levels smaller, and cut a linear path through them, and plugged in all the classic Sonic pieces, and now the game feels more like the classic game.”
A Sonic of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin
Yo, hate to break it to ya, Sonic, but it looks like you're on…Very thin ice.
Sonic must need some icyhot for all that running he's been doing for the last two decades.
I like how after every single Sonic game the developers go "Yeah, as it turns out the fans wanted speed but we didn't pay attention to that…" and "yeah, we tried this one awful gimmick and no one liked it, so..."
Like every single time.
Nevermind that its not actually the speed sections, its, you know, competent level design that makes the difference.
And also not being super all buggy to hell.
Reaching M. Night Sham levels of denial right now
Sonic themed restaurants? They must be desperate.
Not really surprised by this since they already stated they were planning on making it a series. And, hey, maybe it'll be better.
….I mean, marginally better.
....Oh well, have some Game Grumps
For a sec there I thought you'd link the actual real Sonic themed restaurant

Minus the unintentional comedy aspect.
At least the cartoon is fine. That gave the team enough reason to make another game for Sonic Boom I suppose
I guess there's a large enough amount of people that keep buying Sonic that they can still keep releasing these.
On the other hand, the Sonic Boom games were the worst selling Sonic games of all time if I remember correctly.

They're pretty much show tie-ins at this point. Quality doesn't matter when it comes to those.
Remember guys this a sequel to a 3DS game that was not bad, not good just average, and is part of a series with a successful cartoon. It is only the Wii U game which really bombed (and i think the comic is also not around but wasn't that temporary anyway, like the sonic x comic?)

I'm not too sure of the up to date sales numbers, but as of February 2015, it had sold only 490,000 copies worldwide (and this is a combination of the 3DS/Wii U games).
! @Galaxy:
! > Sales figures of "Sonic Boom" are out… and they are not good. Sega's performance as a whole this year can be described as not good as well (from the information listed below).! Sonic Boom has sold 490,000 copies worldwide on Wii U and 3DS, SEGA has confirmed. The company’s report doesn’t actually clarify if that figure is shipped or sold-in to consumers. However, it’s disappointing in any case, and Sonic Boom is the worst-performing entry in the series ever.Today’s information about Sonic Boom’s performance comes from SEGA’s latest financial report. Other interesting tidbits are as follows:
– SEGA spent $210 million on games development
– That is a 27 percent increase compared to the year prior
– Advertising expenses climbed 53 percent, up to $73 million
– SEGA is releasing 50 games by the end of the financial year in March, but combined sales of all those are expected to be about 5.4 million units
– SEGA initially expected to sell about 300,000 units of its four latest Wii U games
– That is now revised to 230,000, making it the weakest platform in terms of unit sales
– Full year expectations for 3DS 1,160,000
– SEGA’s revenue for the three-quarter period was $685 million
– After expenses, that lowers to a profit of $18 million
– SEGA is now organizing a sweeping business restructure, which will rebuild the corporation into three divisions, as part of a wider plan to “drastically improve profitability”
– At least 300 positions at the corporation are targeted for redundancy
– SEGA has set aside $125 million for the restructure costs
! – SEGA expects to lose $110m for the full yearhttp://nintendoeverything.com/sonic-boom-moves-490000-copies-other-sega-financial-results-tidbits/

Judging by Galaxy's sales numbers, the 3DS game was a pretty huge failure, too.

Yeah, the BOOM comic is being cancelled after #11, which is immediately after its involvement in the Megaman crossover.
"it's like a glitch that occasionally breaks out into a game!"
For a moment when they said a new character would be playable I thought it was gonna be eggman only to be disappointed it was Amy.
So sonic x angry birds was announced for mobile. Umm… ok?

Well Sonic already has a significant mobile presence with that temple run style game, so….
Not like sonic can fall any lower right?

Note that it isn't a full fledged game, but rather an in game event for Sonic Dash.
Still pretty random though.
Not like sonic can fall any lower right?
Labyrinth was low as Sonic can get….....then Rise Of Lyric came along and all hell broke loose.

What, back in the Genesis days? I liked the concept but I can see why many people would be turned off. But at least back then, Sonic was still trailing with his 3 main games.

Well Labyrinth was a game gear game that simply didn't work yet it didn't stop Sega from rereleasing on Sonic Mega Collection + for some reason.
Wow. They really don't know what the hell to do with Sonic now.

I'd understand the criticism if this were a pc port of "Rise Of Lyric".
I thought Lost WOrld was decently received at the time? Or is it the usual Sonic cycle thing where people think the games are all right on release but after a weekend or so realize there's nothing there?
Also, what does it say when I saw this thread was bumped, and my initial mental reaction was not "Hrm, what's the SOnic news?" but instead, "What did they fuck up now?"
I owned Lost World, and it was… ok. It wasn't terrible like 06 or Rise of Lyric, but it wasn't Sonic Colors or Generations good.
I felt it was worth the (used, discounted) purchase price I paid.

Going through the motions.
Another modern Sonic game coming to PC?
I can see all the mods already.

Looks like a Sonic related announcement is incoming in February
The Sonic Humble Bundle has now expanded to include SOnic 3 and Knuckles… so it now includes all four genesis games, CD, Sonic 4 parts 1 and 2, Adventure 1 and 2, All Stars Racing and Transformed, Generations, and some other stuff.
If you've got steam and a computer that can run the 3D games, its a pretty good deal at this point for about 10$.
https://www.humblebundle.com/sonic-25th-anniversary-bundle
Also, sega now allows mods on their old games, so the classic games have quiiite a few mod tweaks in the steam workshop, long as you have the game.
Eagerly awaiting the day that Sega bites the bullet and puts 06 on the Steam store.
I will continue to argue to the day I die that Sonic 06 is the most interesting Sonic game of all.
Interesting in a chinese curse sort of way?
I want to play 06 just so I can laugh my ass off.
There's also the comic book bundle where you can get over 50 issues for just $15.
Speaking of steam releases I'd like to see them release Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors to PC.
I will continue to argue to the day I die that Sonic 06 is the most interesting Sonic game of all.
It's no use arguing against this

You'll and I'll both be dead by the time that happens.
Considering Sega remembered that game in Sonic Generations…

It's no use arguing against this
I see what you did there…

Take this as a reminder of my conviction.

See, the best Sonic games to me were only ever just good. Fun, entertaining, just like a bunch of other things. I'm not sure there's anything they do particularly well, besides music, so they just stand as good quality games. Other entries in the series kind of vacillate between good and bad, like the Adventure games, which I have some fond memories of and a few more mediocre ones. Sonic 06, though, is flat out indefensibly bad. It's not just bad, since there are a lot of bad games out there, but it is a very unique kind of bad. The kind that you could only get with a certain combination of rush, and naiveté , on top of an already bad design sense. The levels don't work, the basic controls never feel right, nothing looks good and some mistakes are just unforgivable. Every minigame, for example, has a long load screen to load a state of the world where the NPC tells you about the game and then the game loads and when you beat it, the game loads a state where the NPC congratulates you and then you load back into the world. There's one game which is a simple 'guess the number of boxes' game that SMRPG got right on the SNES, which requires you to load every single time you make a guess.
Some of these things may seem unplayable, but seriously, give it a try! It's like the thrill you get when you walk through a hall of mirrors and back against them all. Sonic can't stand on the corners of roofs since he doesn't know which side he's suppose to be on. Instead of picking one, he oscillates between the two. Some 'abilities' seem like they were just adapted glitches, like a special ability you can buy which lets Sonic shrink and also jump infinitely, or the fact that Amy Rose has the power to turn invisible with no precedent or explanation. When you jump on water, you bounce on it once and then just clip through it like it was a solid object you just passed through. Deep sand works the exact same way. There are so many instances of weird gameplay shenanigans that are a frustrating joy to discover, like the strings holding up props in a MST3K-grade movie. I was left stunned during some moments of the game where I just couldn't believe the nonsense I was experiencing.
Then there's the plot, a convoluted 3edgy5me trip through time and space with an apocalyptic demon and a bunch of neon furry creatures interacting with humans that look like they came from an early Sims game (and they just won't stop gesturing awkwardly at you when you talk to them), all punctuated by a so very not-that-into-it voice cast. For some reason Sonic gets a human princess love interest which looks exactly as creepy as it sounds and we even get treated to a couple horrifying romantic scenes between them as well as a climactic kiss to bring Sonic back to life.
I think the culmination of all these elements, though, shows up in what is called The Test of Love. There's a point in the game where, as Sonic, you have to complete three trials given to you by shitty Sims priests in order to access some Castle stage. You have a Test of Courage (fighting), a Test of Wisdom (a shitty teleporter maze), and then the Test of Love. You must make the ultimate choice, between your love for Amy Rose and the human princess Elise. So you accept the mission, sending you to the loading screen where the NPC wishes you good luck or something so you can load the actual test. You stand in a field with Amy on one end and Elise on another, each with teleporters next to them. Then you go into one of the teleporters and your choice cheers for you and that is literally it. It has no bearing on anything, is confusingly-presented and reeks of that awful writing that attempts to tie the game together.
I have no such complex thoughts, questions, or feelings after playing the best Sonic games. Sonic 06 is the one that's left the biggest impression on me, and even if it is a largely bad one, I cannot deny that it is very interesting. I recommend that everyone play it at some point. It's one thing for me to tell you about this stuff, but experiencing it with enough alcohol could almost be mistaken for a twisted form of fun! It's the closest thing video games have to a Room or a Plan 9 From Outer Space, and so it's an experience you won't find anywhere else.
I played 06 when slowbeef was doing his Let's Play/Let's Suffer as a side-by-side thing.
Two things:
The game visually looked better when I was watching pokecapn's play through in grainy 360p
The highest point of the Sonic franchise is when Shadow roundhouse kicks Silver
The fact that Shadow yells Chaos Control before just kicking Silver is the best detail. We don't actually see time stop or anything, so I get the feeling that Shadow just likes saying that before doing anything.
