A shoe-in?
Gotta get your "kicks" some how.
Just want to point out a few things.
! 1. Last bit of the movie was enjoyable. Like, I largely agree with Demon Rin on a lot of the stuff including the first 2/3 of the movie (aka most of it) doing pretty bad and then it finally gets its act together in the 3rd act. Like, from Batman confronting Superman and onwards was really decent. The rest of the movie was too plodding and felt like it was taking too long to build up to the inevitable fight we knew would be conveniently resolved so they can fight a common enemy and omg please hurry up already!
! 2. Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
! The only scene of Jesse Eisenberg I enjoyed was when he confronted Superman on top of that helipad. His acting and emotions fit the scene perfectly.
! 3. Batman killing people so callously had me squirming in my seat. I understand this an older more ruthless Batman but it wasn't translated well for us as to why Batman is intentionally killing people like that. Ok, the feeling of helplessness turns good people cruel. I got all of that Alfred but what does that have to do with killing low-level goons? It makes more sense for that to explain why he's going after Superman even though a lot of people see him as a hero. Not taking your anger out in murderous bursts on hired muscle. What do those poor sods have to do with you feeling helpless or inferior?
! Maybe he's just turned cruel so he's just cruel to everybody? Sure, whatever.
! 4. The story. The terribly structured plot progressions and dream sequences. The communication between characters that left the audience uniformed so we were left thinking, 'Why are they acting like that? Who told Lois Lane to get the Kryptonite spear? When did Superman find out Batman was Bruce Wayne? Was it when he was listening in on the earpiece and "Batman" was never mentioned once, or was it? When did Lex find out who Clark was? Oh, I guess the alien AI told him…I guess... Wait! How did Lex know Lois Lane was Superman's weakness and he would come rescue her even in a desert??? Did the whole damsel in distress thing become common in those 18 months since Superman made his appearance? Is Lois Lane already being rescued and saved by Superman that much!? It was Lex sending Bruce Wayne those rejected checks in the mail the whole time for 2 years? Wait...does Lex Luthor know Bruce Waynce is Batman!?!? How long has he known!?
! 5. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I liked her. I liked her a lot.
! 6. Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck in their respective roles. No complaints.
! 7. Those Justice League cameos!? Hahaha WTF!?!?
! Oh there's more but I said "a few things"
! It was a mediocre movie with few good things but i'm the type that shuts down my brain in order to have fun. And it was fun. Silly and ridiculous but fun. My favorite part though was Lois going to get the spear after that ogre and batman got there. It may have been unintentional but it was one of the few moments in these silly movies where characters have shown some intelligence and common sense. I noticed it while watching it and i liked it. Though considering how ridiculous the whole movie was it may have just been an accident.
Welp. Saw the movie.
Pros:
I liked Jeremy Irons as Alfred.
I actually liked Gal as Wonder Woman. And her battle music.
I mostly liked Batfleck.
! minus the gun use and straight up Killin dudes
Cons:
Lex. So damn awful.
Superman.
! When it's all said and done I felt like he wasn't what the movie was really about. He didn't get more development as a character. I feel like he'said still as lost as ever as he was in MoS. Like he never really got his moment of "this is why I do this for humanity." Moment. That moment should have been at the hearing at the very least.
Lois Lane. But I've always hated Louis Lane. She has some of the worst instincts for self preservation. She damn lucky Superman cares about her. She would have died a thousand deaths by now.
! I so didn't need to see her in the bath either.
The story itself.
! Also holy nonlinear story telling Batman! It really didn't make a lot of sense to me. Plus the nightmares and dreams. So unnecessary. People jumped during Batman's Martha nightmare. Lol.
Overall it gives me a tiny bit of hope for the Justice League movie. But I honestly don't see how we'll get from how this movie ended to that point in a organic way.
Sunday Box office isn't being counted yet I don't think…. I may be wrong, but either way, The movie is already nearing half a billion dollars.
The movie has so far taken in $170,100,000 domestic, and $254,000,000 foreign, equaling out to a worldwide total of $424,100,000.
Kiiiiinda hoping it hits the 800mil to 1bil range and word of mouth causes it to die there… but, if it keeps going at this rate, it'll probably make WB a sizable profit... sizable enough for them to stay the course................
You vote with your wallet. You don't buy into something and then hope that it doesn't make as much money.
I saw The Dark Knight three times in theaters, I saw all of Marvel's Phase 1 twice except Avengers which I saw four times, I saw The Winter Soldier, GotG, and Age of Ultron twice each, The Force Awakens 4 times, and Deadpool twice so far.
I saw BvS once, with discounted student tickets, and will NOT be seeing it again.
That's how I vote with my wallet.
I'm the kinda person who wants to actually experience something before I fully criticize it. That's why, up to when I went in to see the movie I based all my criticisms on materials we'd actually seen and were given and I was saying that those previews and the materials did not wow me, but I still at least HOPED it'd be good, even if I had concerns… sadly, the concerns were correct, and unlike Marvel, unlike Disney, WB will not be getting any more of my money on this one.
Here's hoping Suicide Squad is as good as it looks.
And that's totally fine but then don't go all "oh I hope it doesn't make all of that money" when you're part of that. That's really silly.
Not really, no because to be honest, we DO want the movie to make SOME money…. The goal here is that they make enough money to still see Superman as a viable character to make movies about, but not SO much money that they see the movie as a rousing success. If the profits were too low, or worse, if they lost money on the movie, then they might just abandon the concept of making Superman movies altogether. At least for a good long while.
If it makes the right amount tho, they'll still want to make more Superman movies, but the whole "Not raking in Avengers levels of cash" thing would make them rethink their strategy with the character.

Her and that music was the best part of the movie for me.

I actually want this movie to fail commercially. And yes i didn't pay to watch this movie, instead i watched the cam.

I know people want to see these superheroes on screen but i would rather not have any movies with them if this trash is their best effort.
Like Transformers, people don't care if the movie is terrible as long as there's 200 million in special effects action sequences.
It could have a huge drop off next week but it'll still have done well enough this first weekend to not really matter, and it has no competition for several weeks.
As for my thoughts on the movie…... Jeez i thought that the reviews gave me a pretty good idea of this movie mess of a narrative but damn this went beyond what i expected.
How the hell can a movie have this much material yet at the same time go nowhere with it? It's like the movie was trying to be Tarantino without any sort of direction, passion , idea or care put into them. Fucking Transformer's had a more believable and coherent story then this mess. And the conflict that the movie is named after, and biggest reason why anyone would watch this movie was one of the most laziest and plot-induced stupidity i have ever seen. This crap makes Naruto's talk no jutsu in Pain arc look realistic and believable in comparison.
I went into this movie with ZERO expectation and just to enjoy it's flaws yet even then it ended up being a disappointment. I thought James Avatar was a borefest but this movie takes the cake.
You all shoulda just seen Zootopia again instead.

Oh sorry wasn't aware that we got an armchair analyst here. That changes things I'm sure your expertise decision making will lead WB down to the correct path. rofl.
Just came back from it. It's better than Man of Steel…. And that's about it.
Oh sorry wasn't aware that we got an armchair analyst here. That changes things I'm sure your expertise decision making will lead WB down to the correct path. rofl.
I didn't just pull this concept out of nowhere, there is precedent for it.
The Transformers movies, for example, always turn a rather sizable profit. The last two each made ~$1.2 billion on about a ~$200mil budget. That's why they keep churning them out without really fixing any of the criticisms the public has.
Meanwhile, Superman Returns made only $391mil on approximately a ~$200 mil budget. That's BASICALLY a success, especially when you factor in merchandising, but it's abysmal when you realize that Iron Man, who had no brand recognition with the public before his first movie and was practically considered a C-Lister brought in $585.2 million on a $140 million budget with his first movie only two years later.
That's why it took them 7 years to get a new Superman movie out, and why that Superman movie was a reboot with a new cast rather than a Superman Returns sequel. They saw Superman Returns as a failure, and went back to the drawing board.
Now, Man of Steel made $668 million on a budget of $225 million. That is significant'y better. That's almost 3x the return vs Superman Returns that couldn't even double its investment. It wasn't a complete failure like Superman Returns, so the cast of Man of Steel is back in BvS, and it's basically a sequel to MoS.
If this movie did Superman Returns bad, WB would most likely shelf Superman again and take another 7-10 years before trying again. It being a success, but not a phenomenal one would, hopefully, make them at least rethink their approach in the future.
Want more proof? It happened to Spiderman too.
Amazing Spiderman's budget was $230 million, and it made $757.9 million at the Box Office. CLEAR success right? So Sony makes another one, Amazing Spiderman 2. Now, how much did that make?
Budget was $255 million, and it made $709 million.
At face value, that looks like a success right? It still made back more than 3x it's budget right?…. Well, here's the thing. It cost a little more to make (~$25m) and it made a little LESS overall (~$49m) than the first one.
For a franchise based on Marvel's biggest character, it's not good that his movies seemed to be having diminishing returns. Especially when the first one was considered good.
That's why we're getting YET ANOTHER Spider-man reboot pretty soon here and why Sony is playing nice with Marvel and letting them have Spider-man to play with. The amount of money made was such that they felt this was the right course of action.
The only reason Sony's rebooting it this quick despite everybody being wary of the fact that we will now have had 3 different spider-men in the same decade* is because they have a time limit. If they go too long without using the character, they lose him and he reverts back to Marvel entirely which they don't want. Even if Marvel now has some control of the character, with the current arrangement, Sony still makes money on the solo films.
WB on the other hand, owns DC and owns Superman outright. They can afford to sit on him for a decade and wait for the time to be right to do a new movie.
Ultimately, this is speculation and opinion, so I'm not trying to claim I'm psychic and KNOW what will happen, but the things I'm saying are based on facts and precedent, so don't patronize me please.
*The last Tobey Maguire Spidey movie was in 2007, Tom Holland debuts in Civil War this year.
BvS dips down to 29% on rotten tomatoes. Non critic seems to be steady at 73%.
Let's all just watch The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow every week.
You all shoulda just seen Zootopia again instead.
Fuck no. Nothing was going to stop me from watching this movie

Fine. Then pay to see Zootopia and then go into the BvS theater.

Nope. Don't regret giving WB my money.
I think all my criticism has already been said by others, but during the movie I had to take a quick pee break and when I got back, a dad was just leaving with his 10 year old son, who was weeping.
That was the movie's saddest moment.

! That grave oozing nightmare scene I'm guessing. This movie I couldn't imagine taking kids to. It definitely lacks fun to offset the hopelessness.

I forgot te chronology of all the scenes, but it was definitely before
[hide]the suicide bomb, because I remember being glad that the kid was gone during that scene.[/hide]

…I actually have no idea where that scene takes place now that I think about it lol.
! That bombing scene would be incredibly uncomfortable to see even in a normal political thriller/drama. The fact that it's a fuckin' Superman film makes it much worse.
! The timing is not helping.
I actually want this movie to fail commercially. And yes i didn't pay to watch this movie, instead i watched the cam.
Kind of a dick move to be honest though.

…. That's the point. I am voting with my wallet.
When Superman has to save Lois from dying for the 136th time and he catches her mid-fall, I remembered that iconic "You've got me? Who's got you?!" scene from Superman the Movie.
I guess it was the moment where my mind finally shut down and started thinking of happy thing as a form of self-protection.
@Cyan:

That scene was pretty startling.
! Especially when you realize June is freaking out over receiving a nice warm jar of pee…Also I'm wondering what the bomb was made of that Superman didn't hear any out of place mechanism during the silence. And did they kill off Mercy? That sucks...
…. That's the point. I am voting with my wallet.
I wouldn't suggest watching a cam rip is "voting with your wallet" but whatever.
I like to think the bomb and jar of pee as a metaphor. We go in expecting a smart movie that deals with Superman taking responsibility for his actions. And instead as soon as we started talking about it, Snyder pees in our mouth and blows the entire idea in our faces.
It's crazy how blind Superman is in terms of Luthor and Luthors actions in this movie. He sees, hears or does nothing about this maniac who is campaigning against him. Superman even states it after the bombing. On top of that, he helps Luthor by stopping Batman during the chase (Ok this wasn't that significant because Batman got his stuff anyway later, but yeah).
He overheard Bruce Wayne's communications with Alfred, he is ALWAYS there when Lois is in ANY kind of trouble (well this is an old Superman trope) but scanning the location of an obvious set up seems out of question.
When the plot starts using these abilities to drive itself forward and then later dismisses them with a shitty excuse, something is wrong with the plot imo. Welp, I'm kind of parroting myself in this thread, but nearly every issue I had with BvS is plot or script related.
And if the BD doesn't contain 30 minutes of additional action or sex scenes I have no reason to buy this boring piece of a movie.
If Lex wasn't so clearly a psychotic manchild, it would be easier to believe Superman having a blind spot with him.
Just came back from it. It's better than Man of Steel…. And that's about it.
I actually had to re-watch MoS to get BvS out of my head. This only reinforces the idea that they should have just done a proper Superman sequel.
! > "The ending of BvS was designed to show that Superman was willing to make himself collateral damage if it meant saving others. I felt like we had to kill Superman in this movie in order for us to have been serious with the entire premise of the film. And that's not to say that he clearly is gone forever."
There is so much wrong with this, I can't even count. You suck, Snyder.
You should probably spoiler tag that though.
! Okay, done. But I don't see much of a point, anyone who isn't a total blind bat knows Superman won't die. This amazing twist is as superficial as it can be.
@TLC:

Yeah just as a general courtesy because some people may prefer to obtain what little enjoymen tthere is to be had with that scene by not knowing it's not coming.
! Although as AngryJoeFan said in his review, they done fucked up by killing him off now as opposed to later lmao
You know what I just realized today after thinking more about the movie and watching more actually good reviews with ppl who didnt just bash it for the sake of it and were giving the movie fair constructive criticism?
I think I was phantom menacing myself, the way ppl did it back with episode 1…and 2...and 3.^^
I am a big fan of the dcu and its characters, much more so than marvel. Doesnt mean I hate all marvel movies, cause movies like the winter soldier are definitely one of the best in this genre. I also like many of snyders movies. Do they have problems sure, and like with michael bay movies for example, I see them all, but can still enjoy them.
Thinking about BvS more now I realize that the movie is not very well written at all, and to be honest I now dont even now how to ultimately feel about it. I definitely need to wait till the Blu Ray comes out to watch it again and form my final opinion. And I may still end up liking it, but the flaws will still be there of course.
And I am still looking forward to the future dcu movies. Cause they can still make really good ones, especially the ones written and directed by other ppl than the snyder and his whole team ones.
Super hyped for Suicide Squad, cause the cast looks good, the last trailer was hype and the director did great movies so far.
So yeah, looks like I was able to break the phantom menace no jutsu, lol.
Also, found this article and it is hilarious and shows that snyder doesnt really think this through:

! I see no benefit in them "killing" him off either way. What a lame thing to do. I'm really starting to think this really was to be an easy R rating cause it seems they really didn't have kids in mind when making this. I'm glad I had an episode of One Piece to watch after I got home. Such a downer of a movie.

! While I agree to an extent, basically I do understand Joe's position in that, as he's a big Superman fan, if he were to be killed off, it should be after the general audience has gotten emotionally connected to him. Maybe he would be the one to bring the Justice League together. And just in general with more movies, people may see him as a symbol of hope that Joe feels for the character. But nope. Second movie, Doomsday's here so gotta kill him only for the immediate hint of him coming back lined up by multiple sequels that involve him.
! And now, definitely at least, the stakes for Superman movies has been hurt pretty badly because even if Brainiac shows up, you think, ah well, they already used the Superman died card. Can't play it again.
I suppose it would have made sense in a film much further down the line.
! Maybe have it where more of the characters got to know Superman, cared about him. So his death had a bigger impact. I felt bad for Martha, cause that's her son. Lois…ugh I just hate her so much it's hard for me to feel bad for her. But yeah they wasted this death on such a lame villain. A villain that looked like a troll from lotr...
! Oh something else the film made me realize that I never noticed before ever, was that Bruce and Supes both had mothers named Martha?! Lol. Was there a name shortage back in the day? That's incredibly weird to me.
! For that to actually work would first require that audiences gave a rat's ass about Cavill's Superman in the first place.
Should I not bother worrying about spoilers?
There's about 3-4 major plot points that haven't been spoiled by the trailers, and I'd argue there's only two that you should try to avoid if you haven't spoiled yourself yet.

The film is apparently terrifying children, does that count?

I'm trying to think which those might have been. I can only think of one. Which I was speaking about earlier. Maybe this time around I did read too many of the hidden comments here lol.
