Also before I forget, i want to mention that sengoku's voice is perfect IMO, exactly what you'd expect from a strict, by the books mustachioed boss

I'm really ticked off at how spoilerific the new theme song is. Started watching the filler episodes with my girlfriend and now she knows all of the people we'll see return in Impel down and marineford, and that they'll all be going there after impel down.
Not to take Toei's side here, but didn't you already know about that opening? Why not skip it for her? I mean dude if I was watching through the whole thing with someone that knew nothing in order, I'd be skipping through things like Opening 3 without a second thought.
-
Nah. I only started watching the subs at the time skip. Read the manga first from the beginning, though. Just wasn't a big enough fan of the anime to watch it all subbed. Was as surprised to see all that stuff revealed as she was. Will probably skip it from now on so she only sees it once.

Assuming you and your gf watched from the jump, didnt the third opener spoil robin for her or were you so far back you skipped it to catch up faster
-
No. She's only ever watched the funimation dub (from the beginning). I've read the manga (from the beginning) for about ten years. I never watched the subbed until the timeskil (except for watching Water Seven when it first came out because I loved that arc so much), but have been watching the dub since the first episode premiered on 4kids.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
All that to say that no, I did not know this theme song would be so spoilerific. I'd probably youtubed it years ago, but certainly didn't know it revealed things so early.
-
It's the same way it was in the simulcast; "Okama Way" and "Okama Kenpo" are "Oh Come My Way" and "Oh Come My Way Kenpo", but he still refers to himself and the people of Kamabakka (and probably the New Kamas, once we get to them) as "queers".
Well since they had something different before but are now using this to be closer to the Viz version, I'm going to assume that's what it is.
Ok, really bummed about that. Was hoping they would stop with that "Oh Come My Way" bullshit by this point. It just doesn't make sense as a phrase.
edit to add
Ok, finally getting around to watching Amazon Lily. I forgot just HOW much I hate Hancock. Seriously, if Oda were willing to kill off characters, she would be one I would be hoping for more than any other character in the series. Hate that bitch so much.
-
The thing about the opening sequences is that in Japan it's pretty much assumed that anyone watching has read the manga. That's just how big it is there. So the anime openings are intended to get people hyped up who already read the material as opposed to anime only fans who are likely scarce in the target audience.
-
Ok, who did the voice of Herecleasn? (is that how it's spelled?) Did Sonny do his voice, or did someone who sounds a lot like Sonny do his voice?

The reason they use the phrase "Oh, come my way" is because that's the name of Bon Clay's song. The one he sings after he first appears in Impel Down. He's not saying his "way" is "Oh, come my way," he's just using the name of his song as his catchphrase.
-
Yeah, it's like a Fairy Tail opening
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Did you guys watch the second commentary? They pretty much confirmed that Mike will likely take over the second half of Impel Down when they were talking about how both Joel and Mike hit on different parts of her personality.
Did people get the set early?
-

It's David Wilson-Brown.

I'm going to start by saying if your only watching the dub and arent caught up to future arcs do not click on this spoiler. It has major spoilers for upcoming arcs.
It's about the pacing of the Future DVD releases but contains spoilers.
! I know this maybe be a bit tough to answer but assuming FUNI gets Marineford, how many voyages after this one S7V4 will the
! one that contains ace getting freed and then later dying come out on. I'm asking because my sibling and I are watching the Dub, they dont like subs and I want to know when the basic end of MF is gonna come out, assuming FUNI keeps their pace, about how many months. I realize this is tough to predict but I want to know if it's worth it for me to slow down the pace where watching it at. 101 Episodes in 36 Days, so if we keep up that pace, we'll get finished with TB on March 16th, and would catch up to the current anime by Early April which should be near over with ID. However if I slowed my Pacing by 2.0 Episodes a day, I'd get at each arc by April 29th and Late May respectively. She could probably wait out a few voyage breaks but idk whether i want to switch for the sub before or during marineford. Of course catching up to the anime is a goal also.
! TLDR WHEN will MF finish if things go as theyve been going. -
We probably still got 5 volumes before we even get to that point.
-
yea, we have a bit of way to go till we get to that point. Remember even though there is strong evidence pointing to the fact that they are working on marineford right now, season 8 has yet to be officially confirmed by funimation.
-
The reason they use the phrase "Oh, come my way" is because that's the name of Bon Clay's song. The one he sings after he first appears in Impel Down. He's not saying his "way" is "Oh, come my way," he's just using the name of his song as his catchphrase.
But it's supposed to be "Okama", which according to the One Piece wiki is Japanese slang for a transvestite or homosexual. Which makes perfect sense considering who Bon Clay is. He seems to see himself as both male and female. So he's supposed to be saying how something is the "Okama way", the way that people like him behave.
I am glad that they weren't afraid to use the word "queer", though. I wondered about that, as the subs seem to use that often, but with the way people get so easily offended anymore, I was afraid they'd use something else in its place that maybe wouldn't make as much sense.
Sad they went with "Diarrhea man" instead of "Shit man" for Magellan's nickname given by the prisoners. They've used the word "shit" a couple times in the past so it's not like it would be out of the question for that word to come up.
-
few days ago colleen posted a picture of her in the studio recording for luffy. I'm pretty sure they are working on season 8 already.

They've mostly avoided using the word "shit" in the past. I can only think of two times they've done so; when Buggy did it it went by pretty quickly and that one time Sanji did it it was under his breath.

Theres been quite a bit of evidence that they've been working on season 8 in the past….and here is some more:
Laura Wetsel posted this picture of her recording for Bonney on her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/-5e8vlAuTsfxWZ5o6uoSncRP77dq44YSrDtXY0/
Which, from the looks of it, appears to be this scene from episode 474:

I think the "Oh Come My Way" thing is a mandate from Toei…. I remember Mato saying that was on "The List" of terms to translate Okama Way and Okama Kenpo. Movie 8 predated the Simulcast, so I don't think it had the same restriction.
While dumb, it's not something FUNi can entirely control.
As far as "Queer" goes, I think that's a more respectful way to translate it these days. The LGBT community has spent a few years "Taking back" that term and trying to make it positive, and with the current definition, I think Bon-Chan and the Newkamas fit that word.
That definition is, basically: "Queer identitites may be adopted by those who reject traditional gender identities and seek a broader, less conformist, and deliberately ambiguous alternative to the label LGBT."
Basically, Bon and most of the Newkamas seem to not have one specific Gender Identity, but are either a "Both at once" or they jump back and forth between them. This is especially telling in the fact that they have Ivankov, who has the power to fully swap one's Sex with their fruit, and while some of the Newkamas seemed to specifically have female bodies, a lot didn't, and Ivankov himself as well as Inazuma seems to swap back and forth on a whim. If, for example, they were all trans and therefore really Women, it'd make sense for Iva to use his powers to make them all permanently have female bodies. Since they have this ability but actively don't use it, it seems that their identity is something inbetween which matches the modern day inoffensive use of the term "Queer". -

That's pretty much my assesment of the situation.
But really Toei, why have them do it this way? Why not just be consistent and have it be “Queer way” and “Queer kenpo”? In the Viz manga they use "Oh Come my Way" as a form of censorship, so as obnoxious as that was, it at least made sense in context. Here it just feels like a phrase they're forced them to use only because other English versions translated it that way. Just because it made sense for how Viz chose to approach it doesn't mean it makes sense to use it in the dub/sub, where they already refer to characters as "queer".
-
We also now have it like this:
Movie 8: "Crossdresser Kenpo"
Alabasta Arc: "Ballet Kenpo"
Impel Down Arc: "Oh Come My Way Kenpo"That, I think, is the dumbest part. A Dumb mandate from Toei is one thing, but now the anime isn't even consistent with ITSELF…..

"Diarrhea Man" makes more sense, though.

Because it doesn't roll off the tongue as well. Seriously, try saying this sentence to yourself and see if it makes sense.
"Oooh ,I just want to lick her all over, give her to me shit man"!
It doesn't quite make grammatical sense now does it? Why throw proper grammar out the window just to be a little edgy? like some mediocre fansub work.
As for the " okama" way issue. Yeah, it's kind of annoying that he just can't say it. Clearly toei had something to do with it, especially if the word "queer" is on the table.
-
They might have went with "Diarrhea Man" simply to get those lips to sync. I think it has too many syllables myself, but it works.
Regarding Okama, it's so weird that the stream subs use "queer" instead. I thought that was suppose to be somewhat derogatory, and even if it wasn't I don't think really works as a substitute (apparently, it's not if they're still using it). Not that "Oh Come My Way" is much better.
I understand that they should translate as much as possible, but Okama is possibly the only word that really works and specifies a specific sub-culture in Japan that is depicted with these characters. Pretty clear it is some sort of Japan-side translation that Funi must use at all times, by Toei, Bandai, or whoever.
It doesn't even make sense in terms of censorship. Not like the average American knows what an "okama" is.
-
I mean, we've argued about what they should and shouldn't translate a million times. "Okama" is a Japanese word; the dub's purpose is to make the show accessible to every American that doesn't know Japanese words. So the closest they can come is queer? That's fine by me. They can't say queer-kenpo because of the syllables, so "Oh come my way" is a fun little saying to replace it. Not ideal, but I don't really see what the translators could do otherwise.
-
^Yeah, leaving “okama” untranslated just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. Its one thing to leave stuff like attack names (and I'm reffering to Japanese attack names, not ones in french/spanish/non-Japanese) or character names untranslated, but leaving words like “okama” or “nakama” untranslated feels like we’re not truly being presented with the author’s intention. When Japanese people hear “okama” they know what it means and how it applies to these characters, so why shouldn’t we have our own English equivalent that gets across the same/similar idea?
As for “Oh Come My Way”, the whole thing is just kind of annoying because: 1) They had gone with “Cross Dresser Kenpo” back in the day, which felt like it fit pretty well. With this new translation it makes the things even more inconsistent then it, unfortunately, already was in the Japanese anime; 2) It reminds me of the Alabasta anime arc and Viz manga, which basically used the term for the purposes of censorship. This doesn’t even seem to be the intention of the dub, so why insist on using the phrase?; and 3) It’s just kind of an awkward-sounding phrase in general, and seems even less natural sounding when you add the word “kenpo” or “karate” to the end of it.
-
The DVD/Blu Ray pre orders for March should be up this week. Let's hope we get something One Piece related.
-
Well, the main sticking point with "okama" is that they're limited to English equivalents that aren't derogatory, yet stresses a more distinct type in effeminate behavior and dress and aren't too clinical sounding.
I agree that they probably should have stuck with "crossdresser" for better or worse and that the lack of consistency is troubling. Also, I think the settling on "Oh Come My Way" is some sort of compromise Toei uses to translate in other global languages (the pun is lost, but whatever). Correct me if I'm wrong there.
At least it's better then the stream translation of "Tengu" to "long-nosed goblin man".
-
"Oh Come My Way" kind of sounds like Okama Way…in a way. And "Oh Come My Way" could also be a reference to his lifestyle, and their desire to convince others to join them and be "free".
-

"Oh Come My Way" isn't used in German. From what I remember, originally they called him "Transe" as in transvestite and his coat said "Drag Queen". When he reappeared they used Okama, if I remember correctly. I sort of recall "Tunte" being used, too. I think that's a bit of an insult, though.
The animes seems to be using "Transe" since there's an episode calling Ivankov "Transenkönig". Though, I haven't seen the episodes yet.
"Oh, Come My Way" is definitely never used, though. Of that, I'm sure.

Booooo. That's a long break between the two sets. Guess I have to ration the rest of this one better to make up for it.
Moira gets his own cover! Pretty cool.
-
Just finished watching the new set. All of the Impel Down voices fits perfectly. Hannyabal was just too great in the dub. Jimbei's voice was great in my opinion. I really like the extra with Brina playing Operation, it made me laugh in tears.
-
I guess they want to get more of Season 8 done before releasing the last set of Season 7 so they have more to release after.
-
Well, I rewatched Strong World after finishing the filler episodes. Watching reminds me that it's impossible for a One Piece film to be better and more representative of the show. And that Shiki's actor's performance is the best we've ever had on the show.
Also, I'm ticked off about the long break. I love these Impel Down episodes. Really don't want to ration them so much.
-
I don't mind the break so much cuz they have been great with the releases. 2-3 months break isn't that bad.
-
I don't mind the break much. Since we got a new set for two months straight.

So don't ration. Watch them, then watch them again, and then watch them yet again. I've watched through the dub three full times, plus watched certain parts a few other times because I like them.
-
I tend to rewatched the episodes as I ration new ones. I think I'm on my fourth viewing of those first four impel down episodes. And yet the Amazon Lily ones I only saw twice each.
So my rewatching amount depends on the arc.
-
the amazon exclusive box 1 is sold out :((((. Hopefully they will restock it
-
So josh the brand manager just confirmed on twitter that there are no plans to restock box 1.
-
Aw I'm a sad panda now :-(

Interesting…as of S7V4, the DVD credits at the end of each disc, under Japanese Translations, now says "Courtesy of Toei Animation Inc."
So...what? The Japanese translations used in the subtitles are now being supplied directly from Toei? Do they have some sort of extra hand in these episodes that they never had previously? Is this why the episode titles now mimic the Japanese titles' punctuation exactly?
....Or could this be related to the hard-subtitled text we're getting lately? Maybe Toei is supplying that themselves on the footage?
Dub-wise, no issues at all. John Swasey seems to be taking his Crocodile a bit deeper like the original. We finally hear the real names of Mr. 2 and Mr. 3. Iva is name-dropped. Everyone sounds great. Freaking awesome that they got Scott McNeil to reprise Shiki for a few new lines. I'd say that's dedication to getting a voice back for consistency, but knowing Scott, he would have offered to come back at the first suggestion.
Oh, and also saw some familiar names from the One Piece Podcast on a few of the episodes. Awesome!
Other random notes:
-We get a new opening on this set, and the "moving logo" of the original was almost perfectly replicated with the gold logo. Best gold logo work ever. Almost looks too professional to have been done by FUNi themselves.
-In the first Little East Blue episode, the English episode title cuts away a second too soon, and you can see the Japanese title fading out.
-
THAT IS SO COOL THAT THEY GOT SCOTT TO COME BACK AND SHIKI. we love Strong World and cannot wait to watch FILM Z that we got yesterday
-
Finally caught back up completely on the voyages
Even though we are finally at the part of the series that I'v ealready watched through subs, it's still nice to own all of the seasons. I just binged the last few voyages and man usually I am not one to complain, but I really think Colleen failed at the scene where(no point in using spoiler tags since it's been out for months) where Luffy loses his crew. Like I said, I've been a huge dub defender but she really failed that scene. It's gotten better again, but that's just one of those scenes you can't mess up and she did. Am I the only one who didn't like it?
Also, is there a way we can get FUNi to stop giving commentaries to actors and actresses who really aren't that interesting and only have small parts like the 2 guards at impel down getting to do a commentary? We need more with straw hat actors and actresses and Mike Mcfarland.

It seems that the first Treasure Chest Collection box set will be restocked starting Jan 4th.

Do you guys think that they'll dub the One Piece X Toriko specials considering that they're listed as episodes of OP?
-
I'm sorry I cursed this arc so much.
At the time, I was simply not interested in Luffy going around by himself because he actually isn't why I care about this show so much. Back then, the 4Kids era was still fresh in my minds, including his incredibly obnoxious voice and jackass persona often given to anime heroes in dubs.
The Funimation dub, having collected all of it except for Thriller Bark, has really opened my heart to the kind of character Luffy is. I'm thankful for that and I can't wait to see him become King of the Pirates (though I don't, personally, think it'll happen… but thats another story ;) Frankly anything could happen to him. He even said so himself, in the first episode, if he dies before he does so, he dies. And no, I didn't say I think he will die, my point is anything could happen)
But yeah, I've only gotten up to the Amazon Lily arc, beautiful arc that it was. Hancock was an A+ character. Having someone be so beautiful she thinks she can control everyone is amazing and fun to watch. Her stoning the Marines, just seconds after them explaining they are aware of that ability, yet still falling for it. Amazing, and yet so cruel. Of course, her obsession with Luffy is a sight to be seen.
I can't wait for Impel down so I'll be importing it soon (island life.....) that arc is gonna be crazy. I spoiled a few voices for me, and it was great to know Luffy and Buggy and Mr. 3 are working together. Jinbe's voice is really awesome too. I always look forward to Fish Man voices.
