That manga took a really bad turn….
Vinland Saga

This whole "punch me a 100 times" martyr bullshit felt so contrived and show-offy. I hope Musashi isn't going to do something as annoying after his farm arc.

Musashi will be painting and writing mostly. Edo period Japan placed more value in culture and arts and stuff than the Vikings did. Also Musashi never tried to build heaven on earth in a country of his own. Having teritory like Thorfin is set out to get, is bound to get you into conflicts that will challenge his pacifism. While Musashi has a change of heart near the the end of his life and he retires, Thorfin is still young and will try to accomplish his goals with this pacifist nature. That's arguably a more interesting case to observe.
But so far, I think the message is clear. If you wanted to be a pacifist in that day and age, you better were became a formidable warrior first. That kinda defeats the purpose of course and it's what Thorfin will try to establish in Vinland. A country were this is not the case. And if this manga stays somewhat close to reality it will fail of course. But the how and why is the interesting part.

There'll be an important announcement on the 25/11 issue.
-
-
The raw is out and scanlation will follow soon.
Now I wonder if this is Yukimura's take on Canute's "Ruler of waves" episode.
-
Oh my god, if we WILL be getting an anime adaptation, I want a really good studio to handle it.. no Beetrain pleaaase.
-
It'll be DEEN or JC Staff and I will drink myself into a coma then.

Don't even joke about it.
-
Cant wait for the anime to start.
I'm always happy to see good old dark Thorfinn ^^. -
English edition Volume One coming out this month…
(seems like the cover art for the second vol is inside, before the table of contents)
-
This is beautiful. Can't wait to hold my volume!
-
Got my copy today…and it's great! Not sure what happened to the Amazon page for the hardcover edition (only the Kindle ver. shows up in the listing) but according to B&N the date is now October 22nd so maybe it will get fixed around then.
-
Well that was a refreshing chapter.
-
I dunno, I kinda get what the author was going for but it still sort of comes off as anti-climactic.
"This guy amused me and made me think back to my younger, more idealistic days so I'm just going to abandon my conquest of this place that I've killed so many and lost men over."
-
This was such a delight to read.
Canute's immediate transition into Evil Heartless Cocksucker was really surprising and fairly unbelievable for me - to have a cute twist on this sort of Gatts/Griffith dynamic is really great. Canute still pursues his goals, he's just a little jaded and tired now. That's so, so very believable. That Thorfinn, who Canute knew to be a killer and a warrior, can come to him in such honesty and straightforwardness and cut through that layer, only serves to push both characters several points ahead on my 'believable but still awesome' scale, which at the end of the day is the only scale.
-
Its Anime is in production. It will start airing in Spring ^*^
-
Rofl at the scanlators getting really bored of the stalling and translating the editors' note at the end. "Next time, Thorfinn will finally get on the fucking boat." I'm not sure if these guys are fit to do this job, lol.
-
I liked Hox jokes, I enjoy farming and boat arcs more than slaughterfests.
-
-
I'm so happy that everybody went to the lollypop guild and we could all take smoothies and have slumber parties! I mean, it's not like this is a bunch of bullshit tied up in a beautiful knot! Sorry, but no, the whole pacifism angle has outright become idiotic now… I pray Saint Thorfin notices that running away at everything and giving the other cheek is not the solution when the other guy just keeps kicking you in the face and that you can't count on the guy kicking you to always be amused by it and say with a big ol grin "YOU WIN!".

Here you go, sir :3
http://puu.sh/4LAw1.jpgThat's a fake season chart if I ever saw one…
They really should make all those series though -
Lol there's Yotsuba in that shit. 100% fake.
-
there was a teaser for the big announcement thought. http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/09/23-1/vinland-saga-announcement-teased
Sadly that could mean anything from artbook to viking themed riceballs : (
-
Several fake charts are made like every season. What gives them away is usually that there's very little new material, and mostly sequels or adaptations of cult manga that everyone would like to see animated (such as Vinland).
-
That "announcement" had nothing to do with Vinland Saga. It was a double page spread and it said that at something there would be a big announcement, also Vinland Saga has the cover next issue.
I think the big announcement was the Mushishi having two bonus chapters in Afternoon in the next two months. -
Chapter 99 is out and we get to see a familiar face again. It also ends the farming arc, for real this time.
I predict that the next chapter will have some sort of celebration since it's the 100th.
-
Ylfa is back again, what else do you need?

To me it actually felt like this was a final chapter. I'm utterly bored of this whole being a pacifist thing. It's impossible to attain anything in this world without sacrifice let alone protect anything.
-
Oh man, i completely that missed that a new chapter came out. As much as a I love this series though, this chapter felt way too light-hearted, especially due to the art (puffy face Thorfinn). I dunno, for Ormar to suddenly become hard working, for Thorgil to leave mysteriously, and for the old master to continue running the farm seems to be too well off for the farm, especially since I think Canute's reason for leaving was just a little bit on the unrealistic side of things. it doesn't bother me majorly though, for the arc was fantastic as a whole. And it'll be great to see Thorfinn's family again.
No idea what people have against the pacifist thing. It's a flawed ideology, but so what? Characters don't have to have achieved the perfect enlightenment in a manga, and there's still time for Thorfinn to change his views.
-
Guys, you know what.. let's follow Ylfa from now on.
-
Now we finally know who is the real son of Thors
-
I loved the chapter, one or two lighthearted chapters are not a bad thing considering the 50 quite heavy before
-
I thought the chapter served its purpose, but wasn't anything special.
In my opinion, the author must be planning some heavy chapters in the near future. These light ones were probably a nice psychological break for him.

It depends on where the author is gonna go from now regarding Thorfinn´s development which i highly doubt is finished. I think the goal of Yukimura is to make Thorfinn similar to Thor at the end of the journey, meaning someone who generally likes to avoid or would like to avoid violence but still protects what is dear to him if he has to. Thorfinn just went from one extreme to the next, from being extremely violent and murderous to not wanting to hurt a soul. I think he will find the middle way.

I'm glad the whole farmland stuff is over

VINTER IS COMING
-
-
I finally managed to pick up the first volume and it was as great as I remembered. I'm purposedly avoiding a re-read so it'll be quite fresh since it's been a while since I read it. V2 should be out later this month, I think?
-
Long ago, several years ago to be a bit more exact, I read though the entirety of Prolouge Saga, enjoying it immensely and being completely awed when I read that it was "End of Prologue". "THIS AWESOME AND IT IS JUST THE PROLOUGE ?!" I thought.
Then a couple chapters later I was stopped by the scanlations at the time. There was something about 11th century Norse men talking to each other with Japanese honorifics that I found extremely off-putting. Couple it with the fact that my distaste for percieved "weaboo" things in fan translations was particularly strong at the time (I still hate 'nakama') and yeah, I was turned off big time.
However, despite feeling like I was missing out for a long time, I now thankful, as, because of that, I was able to chomp on the entire Farmland Saga in one sitting. Now I don't know if it was due to it being new material or reading it while not having to endure monthly intervals or maybe even me liking increased emphasis on the character development or what, but I actually ended up enjoying it more then the re-read of Prolouge Saga.
In regards to Thorfinn's extreme pacifism, I have to say that I don't think that's how he'll be dealing with everything. He mentions violence as the last resort and says that he will avoid it by any means, using the "first resort" instead, but that kinda does imply that he will fight if there's truly no other way. I'm not even sure Thors would do things differently. He did fight Askeladd's forces, but that's because they, unlike the Jomsvikings here, were genuinely out to kill them and he couldn't possibly achieve anything by earning their respect through withstanding 100 punches or whatever, he knew he couldn't talk things out without using force. It was impossible in that situation, but it was possible in this situation and Thorfinn pulled it off. Maybe, if put in Thorfinn's shoes here, Thors would also do the same?
Also, Thorfinn can take a hundred of punches from bearslaying Jomsviking and still be standing, but Ylfa can knock him out cold in just a couple of hits. Good thing they don't recruit ladies in Viking armies…so many Viking man tears... so many burly Viking men with shattered pride...
A legend of Ylfa the Jötunn would be born.

A friend recently recommended I read this. Is it good? I've read a few other manga that kinda remind me of this, but at least one has been an absolute horrible read (cough Ubel Blatt). And then there's the similarities with Berserk that I see.
Thoughts?

Oh, Vinland Saga is one of the best ones out there at the moment. Right up there with Berserk and Vagabond, although probably even better than the latter one in terms of its accessibility and coherence of its storytelling. Not quite as diverse as Berserk, but there's plenty enough to enjoy.
Definitely pick it up and give it a shot.

Certainly better than Ubel Blatt.
Well Ubel Blatt at first seemed would be a super ecchi show(the first chapter the main character tries to fuck a girl he just met. It was totally weird. I'm not even talking about the bad guys, and their horses), than suddenly it softened down the ecchi and turned into an interesting story and later took a lot of decision that I really hated and now it seems the author doesn't even know where he is going(well, at least I don't know where he is going).
Vinland Saga is totally different. It doesn't has the really bad first chapters of Ubel Blatt(the only reason I kept reading was because my friends told me it was worth it, and for a time it was.), the story is really good and keeps the high quality all the way, at least at the place we are is still pretty good, the story doesn't have nothing supernatural, in the maximum I can say that it has an exaggeration of reality, and there is nothing ecchi in it.You should definitely give it a chance.

2 New chapters are out and, well, I like it. A lot!
-
Just one new, actually. The other one is just something that Mangapanda didn't release for ages (for whatever) reason but that most people following this thread have already read elsewhere (on Batoto, really).
A nice set-up chapter, though. At least we now know that this next arc is going to focus around stuff in Iceland, which is nice because we never really got to see much of their life when Thorfinn was a little kid.
-
I liked his new look.
