It has been quite a long time since then.
I like the simbology in that and Erina's look. PSD is a safe haven.

I'm rather happy that while Soma and Erina's grandfather were talking about saving Erina, Alice ended up actually doing something about it. Alice is the best.

Alice and Arato. The ones that actually KNOW about erina's issues took charge. Neat

Alice/Megumi saving the day while Erina is in the trash where she belongs.

I'll wait for erina's development but right now megumi is THE girl.
-
Megumi was best girl during the Election Arc/Moon Festival arc.
Alice was awesome in this chapter. -
Why Saiba think Soma is the only one who can save Erina? Taking in account the relationship between Erina and Soma, ch 3 and 4 can have a forshadow of that: Soma is the lebelian, Erina is the aristocratic 'princess'. Soma doesn't care about Totsuky's name and refinaments, and Erina, most likely due to dad's macabre teaching, thinks Totsuki's academy can look down on everyone around. Another probable and relevant opposition would be high cuisine vs popular food; and for sure Azami is the epitome of refinement, superhigh cuisine and aristocratic people looking down on the others. So likely we have seen Erina has some of this features, but that is not the real Erina, the one who smiles with easy to everyone. And likely, due to his honest, simple and strong character, Soma can make her change, can rescue her from all the bullshit about being the best of the best of the best. In terms of cooking this page likely captures the core of their relationship. Or this other about: "I forgot to judge it and just tasted it"

Man, that Azami is dangerous as fuck.
Not only is his personality crazy, he knows Kendo!
Wouldn't want to anger this old geezer.
-
Alice is still the best girl.
I love the fact the Alice, Hisako and Ryo all help Erina escape. Alice and Hisako don't really get along but they put aside their difference just to help someone they mutually care for. It makes Erina less of a "damsel in distress" but more of a girl who needs help escaping from her psychopathic dad.@James:

Stuff is moving fast I thought we were going to get some smaller arc before we get into the Azami conflict proper but with Erina being sheltered at the Polar Dorm just seems to be the perfect plot device to set up animosity between Azami and that faction.
-
When Alice says material, was she mentioning some actual animation film?
It's a running gag that started with the Extra Erina chapter (52.5). Alice learns about the real world by watching films, not necessarily animation. Those films prevent her from being "clueless" like Erina is.

It's clearly Nobita from Doraemon.

http://bato.to/read/_/348588/shokugeki-no-soma_ch138_by_casanova Well that was a fast release, Casanova usually doesn't release it this fast, and I think they had a batoto delay too.
Anyway. Erina is safe, and that's all I care about in this arc, her development is playing nicely. Will never like this new backstory because she was tusndere from chapter 1. She never felt uber cold like the way she is "supposed" to be. Maybe I'd buy the argument that Hisako helped nurture her before the events of chapter 1, but well from a meta perspective that kind of explanation gives a similar bad taste as a retcon, since you're adding a controversial backstory way too long after her introduction.
azumi feels so blandish that i don't care about any arc he is in. i suppose i should commend tosh for managing to create a character that provokes the exact reaction of "bland boring hentai character" and nothing else (especially given that I haven't even read anything of Tosh's ero stuff).
I dunno, maybe he messed up with the character design or intro or something, but I have trouble taking this guy as a credible "powerful charismatic revolutionary leader" type, and even more trouble taking him as an interesting character at all.Oh, well. Nothing to do but wait until this arc is over.
At least half of each chapter should be focused on Erina development and that'll be somewhat worthwhile at least.
-
I'm not fond of the captive princess archetype… Luckily the prince is not interested in the princess but only on to beat her in the cooking game. That makes the plot interesting, to me. And even if it's understandable the princess is in a difficult situation because she was traumatized by the villain since she was a child, lets hope the princess can do something about it other than expecting to be rescued for a third party.
Also I hope with this new turn of events, the series keeps focusing on delicious dishes.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Seriously, if Soma falls in love of Erina from the start or in an unmotivated way, it'd be the hell of boring.
-
Honestly, both Azami and Erina aren't particularly engaging characters. I care for neither of their plot point. Azami is starting to become a caricature that I can't take him seriously anymore. Dude look like he's perpetually dressed in his halloween costume. The author might as well give him a twirling moustache. I can't wait for someone to kick his ass out the academy. It's kinda annoy me how none of the adults can't do anything about him and just accept him as a director.
Tootsuki already has a graduation rate of 0.5% and 90% explusion rate by the time the 1st year move to their 2nd year. So, is Azami planning to start expelling students starting from the middle school division?? Seriously, if it goes his way, only a selected few will graduate every few generations. =.=
I'm also assuming he's planning to get rid of 90% of school clubs and expelling students by their wealth status because he's eviiiiiiiiiiiiil. For Erina's fans and Erina x Soma shippers, these past few chapters are definitely the high points of the series. Many are declaring Soma x Erina is already confirmed etc..
But I honestly don't really care and feel rather meh about the whole thing. I'm such a downer, am I? It's great that Erina is FINALLY getting some character development as she has been neglected as a character for so long. But I don't really care because of that reason.
I think I'm supposed to sympathise with Erina and rejoice when she escaped from her evil douchebag dad. BUT since Azami is too ridiculously over the top as a villain, her sympathetic backstory feel rather ineffective. Also, he has only been around for around 7 chapters so his threat level as a villain is low. Hence, her running away doesn't carry any impact for me. I find myself sympathizing more with Alice, Shinomiya, Megumi and other characters' backstory.
Also, Azami has been back in Erina's life for like 2 or 3 days which also affect my view on the running away thing. On a more positive note, I enjoy the interaction of Erina with the Polar Star dorm. It's always a good thing to see more of their antics.
I also enjoy the interactions between Hisako and Soma. There's literally zero chance of them getting together but their interactions as friends is just really nice. The only thing I'm looking forward to in this arc is seeing more of the E.10 (and their reasons for supporting boring doucebag). More character developments for other side characters. More shokugeki with over the top foodgasm is always welcome.
-
@sunnyblue agreed, though I had that bad impression way earlier, from the first chapter he was introduced in.
Mainly cos Erina got butchered with a new backstory that basically retcons her personality. Granted she was basically a generic tsundere before this, so maybe you could say she didn't have a "proper" established personality, but it's what we're used to seeing from her. Still, this backstory was introduced way too late to make it believable. And inevitably, a lot of this dislike on the new Erina backstory would go towards this new azumi character.
It doesn't help that the brainwashing isn't believable, and laughably it just makes him look more like something out of a bad ero-manga more than anything else.
I mean we're supposed to believe this guy is charismatic, powerful, smart and something of a social engineer. But that kind of character requires a great deal of development, preferably involving some thriller genre type of feats. Not "i turned up out of nowhere but i'm a super politician and i'm also retroactively in complete control of an established character".
Also, while Erina development is nice, it needs to stop reminding me of this stupid retcon backstory at the same time. Discussion about Erina's personality development between Hisako and Soma? No, she was classic tsundere from chapter 2 and has always been.
Actually I want some clarification, if I understand this correctly; Erina's "new" backstory is supposed to mean her personality is now closed and uber cold. But as far as I remember, Erina was always classic tsundere.
So, I went back and read chapters 1-3, she doesn't really give the impression of some upper class crust.
Sure, she's wasting food and looking down upon everyone.
However:
She looks down on Soma, but not specifically in the way high class looks down on peasants. She actually evaluates his enrollment sheet and gives him a chance to cook. Hell, she looks down upon the other noble generic applicants far worse.By halfway through chapter 2 she shows some tsundere tendencies, and by chapter 3 she's gone full tsundere. At that point any possible chance of taking her as some very cold character is gone. From the point of view of the reader, that's how she is. We see most of her character from interactions with Soma or Hisako, so even if she is uber cold to everyone else we won't care.
Also she shows a very playful side with Hisako.
So, I can conclude that she seems to somewhat be consistent with this backstory? I give this a C in believability in backstory. Maybe it would have been more acceptable if it was shown much earlier, not ~125 chapters in. heck it would even have hyped mr-hentai-character as a better villain.
Erina does seem to improve her food wasting issue as the story goes on, I think?
But the whole tsundere personality just completely kills the so called brainwashing backstory. So, what? Am I supposed to accept that Hisako nursed her somewhat before chapter 1?
I guess the issue is the backstory is too generic, and way too fast for such a radical alteration of Erina's personality.
I think the specific issue is not the blandness of azumi as a villain, but rather that what it did to Erina at the same time. Or even everything else in the story.
Depending on how you see it's either:
a) completely alters her established personality
b) bland and unoriginal
c) either handled badly or too unrealistic to be acceptable
d) completely justified, but still somehow boringI don't know, I would say it's just that azumi's intro dragged everything else about the story down. School politics, several established characters (both developed and not developed ones, elite 10 mostly), some other stuff. If he was just a forgettable villain we could move on, but well, it's not.
TLDR: mr-generic-ero-manga-guy shit handled very badly, drags rest of the story down. Erina feels sour
-
Actually I want some clarification, if I understand this correctly; Erina's "new" backstory is supposed to mean her personality is now closed and uber cold. But as far as I remember, Erina was always classic tsundere.
Eh, no?
The point was that she WOULD have been a cold and closed minded character had Senzaemon not banned Azami from seeing his daughter and minimized damage done to her. Thankfully he did get kicked out, hence the half-assed elitist character she grew up to be. -
@JarmenKell - Yeah, I kinda feel similar way about the whole backstory and Erina's personality not fitting well.
Honestly, I always attributed Erina's personality to her upbringing as the heiress of a rich family and the extensive praises she get for her talent.Nobody will dare talk back to her because of her talent and status. Hisako being around her further reinforce her haughty personality. Her tsundere personality could be a reflection of her unable to fit in normal social situation and her imposing a lot of pressure on herself to live up to the Nakiri family.
Now, it turns out that her abusive, doucebag who appear 7 chapters ago is responsible for her cold behaviour when it comes to food critic.
It's a plausible scenario but it just doesn't quite jive well with her established character if any.
The backstories of Shinomiya, Megumi, Houjou, Hayama and Alice all gave more depth to why these characters behave a certain way and is in line with their established personality. However, Erina's backstory doesn't make me go "So, that's why she act that way" instead is "Wait, what? Sound kinda contradicting".Personally, I think both Erina's backstory and Azami' character could have been done a lot better if more hints were dropped.
I believe the author did plan Azami as his name appeared alongside Gin and Joichirou but the hints regarding him is pretty much non-existent.
For example, the author could shown a silhouette of Azami earlier on in the series to leave the readers guessing who's the character. Or shows a scene of Senzaemon receiving certain information on that person and show him look a bit worry. Or shows a scene of Azami planning to go the schools festival in Tootsuki without revealing his identity to leave the readers guessing. Or shows a scene of Azami entertaining his clients with his "charismatic" personality. Then, when Azami showed up in Erina's booth, everything click and connect.
As for Erina, hints about Erina having some kind of "trouble" in the past could be dropped. Or have Senzaemon talks about Erina's improving but being vague about it. Or have her remembered the words of someone from the past. etc -
Eh, no?
The point was that she WOULD have been a cold and closed minded character had Senzaemon not banned Azami from seeing his daughter and minimized damage done to her. Thankfully he did get kicked out, hence the half-assed elitist character she grew up to be.Ah I worded that badly. I did make a point on Hisako nursing Erina before chapter 1, but I didn't edit the rest of the post to fit it.
So basically it's just there for no reason other than to establish azami as a villain? Cause it isn't even affecting Erina right now, so I'm failing to see much purpose in it. Why not another elite 10 member that we didn't know instead of this butchery (light word use here) ?
It could be argued that the high class noble elitst personality is either a generic template, and/or as a result of her noble upbring (again generic) and not particularly attributed to any specific person. Maybe you could say that azami was simply thrown in to act as the backstory justification for that template, but it's not saying a lot for the quality of the character. But overall it's just too late, and too fast. For ~120 chapters she was mostly generic noble half-elitist half-tsundere template. Almost nothing in the way of a proper backstory and then all of a sudden we're hit with it and a villain to go with it.Honestly, I'll just say it could have been handled way better, more hints, more development/establishment time for the villain, or even dropping the entire backstory way earlier. Or not have the controversial backstory at all. It'd at least make the character easier to take seriously from the readers' perspective. Even if he needed an established connection to the school to work, there were better choices than Erina.
I'm aware I'm being too meta but whatever…...

Yeah I'd also agree it is plausible in-universe, but not good from the reader's perspective.

I don't really understand. If Erina doesn't fit the Tsundere stereotype perfectly, is it that hard to ignore ?

! What kind of educator disbands literally everything mid-school year? I have a feeling Azami didn't go to director school. Maybe he planned his takeover for so long that he has no idea what he's doing now that he's won.
! Doesn't this violate every student contract for being a huge bait and switch in school structure and curriculum? Honestly, with the power structure set up as it is, if the Elite 10 elected to do so, they could fire Azami and introduce a director that focuses the school on only teaching Welsh history. Also doesn't Azami's system require individual merit even more, considering that it's now the only way for students to distinguish themselves?
! And at this rate, couldn't Senzaemon just take all of the connections and employees that Azami must be throwing away, open up Tootsuki 2: Electric Boogaloo and accept the enrollment of any student already enrolled at Tootsuki? -

Honestly, Azami's plan is really stupid. He literally took all the school curriculum out. There's is no 'school' left in Tootsuki. He's pretty much screwing over Tootsuki's future. But there are idiots that will support him though…
Azami is just waiting to get overthrown French revolution style.
! Senzaemon is too busy enjoying the retirement to care about this shit. After all, the E.10 wanted him to be the new director. They should pay for the consequences.
if I was Chapelle and Shiomi, I will go work elsewhere. -
! So the school system is still a total farce, I see.
! It was clear when we saw the students can decide who is the director of the academy. And it wouldn't be an issue depending on if the author creates something interesting. I see the risk with this huge change in the plot is that it's possible cooking gets a secondary topic in the story, and drama becomes the protagonist. It could result in an interesting story, but it doesn't seem to. Anyway, we won't be sure about the chapter till we could read it.

! Not a fan of the direction this arc is taking at all… it's getting seriously stupid. And remember when this manga was about cooking? '~'
-
Cooking without stakes is like cooking without steaks.
-
Shokugeki no Soma is not a [Cooking] manga.
-
Use spoilers tag, people!!
! The chapter itself was a lot better than the spoilers suggested. The students were really against it. Some of them are clearly not going down without a fight. The chapter never mention what happen to the shokugeki system but i assumed is gone too. But that is not going to stop Soma and co. fron duking it out regardless of the explusion threat.
B
The arc is still about cooking though. Azami's system aim to create chefs who can only imitate without any individuality. The english title of the series is Food Wars. There's definitely going to be a war between Azami's supporter and the individualistic chefs.
! Azami's plan is ridiculously stupid. That definitely is affecting my perception of the arc negatively. If Tootsuki was a community or a kingdom, his plan wouldn't seem out of place. But creating a dsytopian system in a school make no sense.
! On a more positive note, Isshiki is likely to do something next chapter about the PSD demolition issue. Maybe we can finally see his speciality. -
I do have to point out that his plan isn't fundamentally logically defunct, and somewhat more sensible than the premise of Tootsuki at first glance.
! He wishes to turn the school into an actual "school", a learning ground, rather than a "battlefield".
Which at first seems logical and sensible.
! Obviously what he's really doing is "only me and those who I like gets to decide your future, and whether you get to learn from us". A draconian dystopia, true, although there are learning grounds like that in real life.
His view is, ironically, more realistic than the premise of Tootsuki.
! Of course, the issue here is turning it into his little "Azami school of cooking" totally destroys the entire uniqueness of Tootsuki gakuen, severely undermining its value. Being the insane competitive death match field is the entire appeal and uniqueness of the school.tl;dr, it totally kills the whole point of the school, and in the end it would destroy the Tootsuki brand, by making it a mundane school that only specializes in specifics. It would reduce Tootsuki into a simple "school of high cuisine dish", instead of "Ultimate school of best food in every aspect of Japanese culinary field" that it is now.
You'd think the E10 would be smart enough to realize how much harm this would be, not only to the school, but to themselves.
Especially you, Eizan. Seriously how can you not have the foresight to see how harmful this would be for your prospective future as a culinary businessman.
