I'm really sorry to hear that man, car accidents are the worst. I wish you the best.

Was only just recently reminded of the movie Greed, which I've been wanting to watch for years but forgot about at some point. I was never able to find the movie before but I did now so I'm happy. Now just have to find 4 hours I'm willing to burn to watch it.

You know you have good friends when you stream Undertale for them and they voice all the characters with hilarious voices for you…I just can't..
-
I went to a store called Disk Replay this past Saturday. They sell old and new movies, video games, and CDs. I bought Spider-Man 2 for the Gamecube, and GTA III for the PS2.

You know who I met when I woke up today ? Yeah, my old friend, depression. I was really sad today fortunately I had my job to distract me from it. Besides that, I ordered a fripSide album and made this
about my pokemon TCG collection (because of the possible gen 7). -
Gonna Pokemon the hell out of today! :)

I'm finally doing better. I remember a few pages back I was bitching about a job, now I've got one. Janitorial work making $10 (minimum here is 7.25), barely have to deal with people, 30-40 hours a week. A few weird instances but for the most part it's been excellent. I get a fat check next Thursday and I'm gunna party it up and buy some new video games and clothes. Maybe get some all you can eat sushi. I wish I could buy oden somewhere. I guess it's too Japanese for America. Oh well.
-
Had a wonderful day! My dad and brother visited and helped me put some screws in my paintings so I can hang them. I'll exhibit some of them tomorrow, and while it's just a small exhibition, it's still my first real one. I've put up photos and sold comics before, but that was part of schoolwork and summer courses. If I'm lucky maybe I can sell one.
Afterwards they dropped me off at a sci-fi convention. First I got a little sad, seeing all these people attend with family and friends while I don't have anyone I can talk with about this stuff. But once I got over it I had a lot of fun. Got to see Samantha Fox, who I had no idea who she was but apparently she's famous. Told a story about how she got stuck in a palm tree and then sang for 30 seconds. Also got to meet and talk with Samantha Carter, got an autograph for my brother. There were 6 famous people there who would sign stuff (although Fox was somewhere else). I thought there'd be long lines to each one of them, but it turns out that almost nobody cared for most of them, except John Rhys-Davies (Gimli).
Wasn't there very long, but I'm still content. Got a Zelda poster and a Torchic stuffed animal for myself. Typical worry that I sounded like an ass when really I was just nervous and unaccustomed to be talking to people with my interests. There was a viking section with viking things, plenty of cosplayers (my favorite was a guy in star trek uniform. He even had the right kind of haircut and posture, so he looked like he came right out of an episode!). Learned that the by far most effective costume was batman. Wherever that guy walked, there was at least a dozen kids who shouted "LOOK, IT'S BATMAN!" in amazement. That made my day.

I was having dinner with my family, when we were done eating and we were leaving the table I received a call, the father of my ex friend committed suicide today, the worst thing is that he hated his father, so the remorse will be huge.
I really can't do much, since it has being 2 years since I last spoke with him, if I call him today I wouldn't be able to say anything worth, it would sound fake or forced.
Meh..is life.

Oh man tell me about it. Three weeks ago i spent my only weekend of in ages violently throwing up.
I threw up 9 times on one night, and by the end it was just dry, essentially a painful, spasming, pantomime of vomiting.
So yeah. Do drink alot of water and try to get through it.

There's pretty much a holiday for almost anything. Besides International Women's Day, there are apparently 6 others that fall on today's date.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I feel that it gives respect to the people involved in the many movements which have happened throughout history for the upliftment of the black community. Unless until there is true equality, there is nothing wrong with highlighting the efforts.
-
Yea, ultimately the logic is historical. There's a black history month because it became apparent that the contributions of african americans to the country weren't really being recognized otherwise. (and nowadays the month has become a flagship standard to prove how not racist the country is.)
Similarly, the idea of an international women's day was for a similar purpose, to recognize the contributions of women to the workforce in eras during which that was much less of a thing. Not that there's perfect equality nowadays… but giving women a day of acknowledgement still rings meaningless when the other 364.26 days are pretty much male dominated in most industries.

An Indian history month would be a good addition
In celebration of immigrants from India? Or of the native americans?
Heck, let's do both… not on the same day of course.

Weren't there some injection ampules to have helped you in case you had a spasm?Oh man tell me about it. Three weeks ago i spent my only weekend of in ages violently throwing up.
I threw up 9 times on one night, and by the end it was just dry, essentially a painful, spasming, pantomime of vomiting.
Or you?
It was the only thing that helped me when I had an awful spasm of vomiting few years ago and when my body refused any pill I took >..<
…
And I love all the holidays that give me a break from going to uni right now, which includes women's day. That's a perk of so many holidays existing :3

I was thinking of the native americans. But sure why not have a week for each nationality making up the US.
I'll come visit for Scandinavian week.

Carmilla, tell me more about those magical capsules! O:

I don't remember the name, I know mother got it back then ;__;
But I just mean that any drug that works against vomitting spasms should do in a capsule state, if there are any over there, though  -
If only i could get my hands on some nyquil my cold season would be alot smoother.
But oh no it's not deemed safe to sell across the counter over here. Damn regulated healthcare.

Don't get me wrong, I dig black history month, but why did they pick such a shitty month like February? It's cold and short lol. And honestly the media kind of like to shove it down our throats a bit. I've known about it since I was little so by the time I'm as old as I am now I'm a bit tired of it. Hell, Latino History month is in some month in the fall (which is better) so idk. So in short, I'm more or less cool with black history month but I feel like it's a half-ass attempt to reconcile/connect with the black community. Maybe this isn't a popular opinion, but it's how I feel. I know I'm weird. Sorry.
On another note, I'm just counting down the days until payday (Thursday). Can't wait!

@Galaxy:
There's pretty much a holiday for almost anything.
Case in point, the band Green Day have an official holiday now.
February 19th is now "Green Day Day"!
100% serious. What makes this even better is that the band itself is named after Billie's love of marijuana.
The literal "Green Day" of his week. -

Ohooo! I agree with that one, I definitely want to eat their food o.o. In Canada we call our indigenous tribes "The First Nations" and well, they've suffered a horrible history of oppression over here, but I'm hoping slowly Trudeau will rekindle the relationship, he seems to have started.
Now an interesting Native Peoples are the Maori Tribe from New Zealand, which has its customs taught and celebrated country-wide to this day.
But glad to know that I can bring you to school for show and tell for Scandinavian day when it catches on.
"Hello class, this is a Swedish man." -
technically it's women's history month this month too

A half-ass attempt is better than no attempt and hell it's not about reconciliation or connecting with the black community. Maybe a bit but that's not the real point. It's literally what it sounds like.. A month celebrating and learning the history of black people and their major contributions to our society.

I don't really agree with this. Half-assed attempts can just divide further and segment society even more. Doing things half-assed can do just as much damage sometimes, if not more, than just not doing them.
There's, for example, the whole thing that it leads to this belief that it's on this one month (and only in hispanic heritage month for hispanics, and only in march for women) that we actually think about people of that respective minority, but the rest of the year we can go back and focus on white, male-centric history and perspectives. Why not learn that stuff throughout the rest of the year like with everyone else?
Like sure, that doesn't happen everywhere and there's history teachers that do a better job of not segmenting history curricula like that, but I can imagine it very much is the case in a lot of places and given that I can understand why it's a little bit BS. It just highlights even more how differently we have to treat each other for some reason.National Be Nasty Day? I wish I had a porch to shake my fist angrily at kids playing on my non-existent lawn.
Hard to imagine you participating in that holiday, tbh xD

It just highlights even more how differently we have to treat each other for some reason. The way I look at it is intent. While it's true half-assed attempts can be detrimental to learning I also believe in many cases something is better than nothing. As long as that something is positively intended, learned, and influenced. Like, you can have a history course and learn about slavery solely through watching some PBS documentary or you can have the same history course but with an instructor who attempts to downplays the significance by saying 'But Africans had and sold slaves too so really the trans-Atlantic slave trade was nothing new.' Both attempts are half-assed but one intent is better than the other.
Mind you, I don't agree with the categorization of Black History Month = half-assed attempt. That's a broad statement and as you said some teachers, communities, leaders, etc… handle it better than others. I'm just saying I'd rather have a Black History Month than...nothing. I don't see it has being negatively intended to harm or affect our population. It does much more good in educating and keeping African-American civil rights in the public conscience than any harm people might think it does.

You're the one who brought up the idea of it as a half-assed attempt, though, which is why I'm using that analogy myself
A half-ass attempt is better than no attempt and hell it's not about reconciliation or connecting with the black community.
Regarding the rest, it's true that the intent is clearly meant to fix a wrong, and in the context of when these ideas came up it was a legitimate step forward, but that doesn't mean we can't question the fact that we are at a point where there's no reason to not go the full distance.
Just because things had good intentions at one point doesn't mean we can't criticize them and ask for better outcomes. And that's my issue with it, I don't like the idea of the country sheltering itself with things like this month and Martin Luther King day to nicely go to sleep believing race issues are over and we've done good, which is something a lot of people seem to do that I don't agree with.A lot of it also goes into an ethics discussion of whether intent really has any merit versus actual consequences of an action. I myself am not a fan of intent inherently justifying certain actions, a lot of stupid shit happens with the best of intentions. But, that's a discussion best left for another time I think.

I was referring to Green-Hair's statement. He was the one who brought up the idea of it being a half-assed attempt. I'm clarifying that though I don't agree with that statement if it was true, which it's not, I see it as glass half full.
Regarding the rest, it's true that the intent is clearly meant to fix a wrong, and in the context of when these ideas came up it was a legitimate step forward, but that doesn't mean we can't question the fact that we are at a point where there's no reason to not go the full distance.

I don't like or agree with the idea of Black History Month being looked at as some half-assed attempt to reach the black community but if someone is going to look at it like that they should know in the past there were attempts to do everything possible to distance black people from even being looked at as civilized or human, or celebrating their history. Now I don't say that to give an excuse or applaud a half-assed attempt at something but instead to discourage people from believing that what is in place now is just as bad as nothing. It simply isn't true. Yeah, there is a flaw in "settling" for what you have as much as there is in "demeaning" what you have. We should strive for more and not be content but at the same time not tear down any progress that is made but rather build on it.
-
You're the one who brought up the idea of it as a half-assed attempt, though, which is why I'm using that analogy
Nah, Outerspec was quoting someone else on it being called 'half-assed attempt'. He wasn't really calling it so himself.
I also disagree with the notion that just because something has a special day/month etc dedicated to it, it will be swept under the rug for the rest of the year. I believe one thing these celebrations do, is bring everyone on the discussion table at the same time. Not everyone is going to discuss the same issues since there are so many unresolved problems in the world that concern so many different people. This why I consider days like women's day or Black History month quite important. They simply turn everyone's head on a single issue at the same time and bring more awareness to it. Then people turn their attention back to the issues that affect them personally or interest them most and can vary from race/gender inequality to cancer or poverty or child hunger etcera etcera. It doesn't hurt to have a day or a month where the majority can be on the same page and more people will get informed from it, right?
I don't agree with people turning a blind eye to things because they don't care or they think their opinion won't change anything at the end of the day. Apathy is as good as adding to the problem imo. Recognize the problem, educate yourself on it and talk about it else nothing is really gonna get fixed.

Heres my opinion on why its half-assed. Take it for what it is.
I personally find february to be a crappy month. Its cold, short, and has not to much going on. Of all the months that we could celebrate black heritage, why this month. Im on my phone so i cant research like i want to but did anything amazing happen in this month for black society? Not off the top of my head. As retarded as this sounds, why is the shortest month of the year black history month? To some we are grateful for anything, to others (like me) think this is just a political ploy to gain/save face with blacks for years of intolerance. I respect it, appreciate it, but think theres a better way to celebrate black heritage than observing it in mostly media outlets in an obscure winter month.
-
I mean, sure, if the cold weather really matters that much to you…
And trust me. Black History Month means a lot to schools and communities all around America. It's not just something touted in the media. The school I work at puts on a program every year where the school performs and has a guest speaker celebrating and talking about black history and hopes and dreams for the future.
