Powermanga's version of the latest chapter is out.
My Hero Academia - Gomu Gomu no Gentle Fist

Tentacole….

Really fun chapter! I loved seeing the class' personality in little bursts and I laughed quite a bit. For some reason Grape Juice always cracks me up far beyond what I expect. Something about him is just… funny.
Question for CCC - what was the process of translating the names and how difficult was it? I noticed Tsukuyomi was left in Japanese while others are straight English.
In wich place does the invisible girl seat?? I can't find her.
I thought you were making a really bad joke for a second there.

Question for CCC - what was the process of translating the names and how difficult was it? I noticed Tsukuyomi was left in Japanese while others are straight English.
I'm not CCC but I think I can answer this question.
Quite simply, most of their code names are already in English. The exceptions to this are Tsukuyomi, Kacchan's two name choices, and those who use their own names. -
Tsukuyomi is one of those names that don't usually are translated to english.
. -
Question for CCC - what was the process of translating the names and how difficult was it? I noticed Tsukuyomi was left in Japanese while others are straight English.
As Bond mentioned, most were already in English (Pinky, Can't Stop Twinkling, Froppy, Grape Juice) or just straight up English phonetics written in Japanese (Sugarman, Tailman, Uravity, Anima, Cellophane, Earphone Jack, Invisible Girl, Red Riot). Messing with those in any way would be a pretty bad violation. …Only subjective part was whether to make Sugarman and Tailman one word or two, and I went with one because I'm a Mega Man fan.
Deku, Tenya, and Shoto were just their names, leaving Tokoyami, Momo, Denki, and Shoji.
Shoji: Spelling is subjective, but the emphasis was on the fact that it was "Tentacle" but with the "...kuru" replaced by "...koru." Hence, Tentacole. Could have just as easily been Tentacoal, but "coal" has implications that don't belong there.
Momo: Basically the word creative, minus the -ve, and pronounced in a Japanese way, making it kree-ay-tee-(bu). Hence, Creati.
Tokoyami: I halfway considered localizing Tsukuyomi, but another character immediately said, "Ah, the god of the night!" That's a succinct explanation right there that doesn't require what would certainly be a wacky localized name. If I could include translation notes, I would, but alas...
And a big part is just how it sounds. Kinnnnd of like how no one in their right mind would localize Nami in OP as "Wave." Kind of. In a way.Denki: Original is charge (phonetic English) + the -zuma of inazuma (lightning bolt). I think the name is meant to be readily understood by the reader in his/her own language, even if Denki does explain the portmanteau on his whiteboard. So I localized to Chargebolt.
Those last two could be argued in the opposite way, of course. That's where the individual judgment comes in. I did it the way I did because Tsukuyomi is already a name while Chargebolt is a mishmash of common words, so I don't see any loss of integrity there.
And Katsuki's was just meant to be as ridiculous as possible.

Thanks for the response! I don't know much about Japanese at all but I find the translation process very interesting, especially when it comes to things like this. It's why Stephen's such a great part of the manga recap. When you two are available on the forums I just can't help my curiosity.
Regarding the names - I didn't realize how many were already basically in English. I guess that happens more often than I think.
-
Thanks CCC! Can you talk us through Bakugou's nickname and rejected hero names as well?
-
Another question for CCC – is the hero ベスト ジー二スト supposed to be Best Jeanist or Best Genist?
Edit: Also, to answer the question above, Bakugou's rejected hero names in the Viz trans are "King Explosion Murder" and "Lord Explosion Murder".

No problem! Always happy to elucidate…except when it comes to editorial decisions out of my control. Then I basically have to ignore this topic ;)

Nickname meaning…Kacchan? Katsuki+chan = Kacchan...?
The heroes names were totally literal.
explode+kill+king -> King Explosion Murder
explode+kill+lord-> Lord Explosion MurderThe only real consideration there is making sure it's outrageous and stupid/evil-sounding enough to make Midnight's outrage understandable.

I absolutely, 99.99999%, couldn't-be-more-sure-unless-the-author-himself-said-otherwise, reject the idea that it's Genist and the crackpot reddit theory that he's the guy behind Tomura. That said, I can't authoritatively claim that. Only offer compelling evidence.
1. The name is based on a real life award called Best Jeanist. It has to do with blue jeans.
2. The character is clad head-to-toe in blue jeans.
3. "Jean(s)" is a word/concept that Japanese people are familiar with from everyday life, and it's pronounced the same way we pronounce it in English. "Gene(s)" is not. The Japanese word for genes/genetics is idenshi (遺伝子) and "genes" pronounced in the English way has not made it into the colloquial Japanese lexicon. The only genes-related hit jisho.org produces when you enter ジーンズ is the name of a NY medical journal- Genes and Development. Not the word itself (the other three hits are about jeans).
3a. If he were Best Genist and that were meant to be foreshadowing that he's behind the bioengineering of Nomu, that would be terrible foreshadowing because approximately none of the Japanese readership would even have a shot at seeing it coming.Reading that theory honestly reminded me of the people who said we couldn't be sure Fujitora was an admiral from his name and appearance alone. Just…obtuse.
In conclusion, if it's Best Genist...I'll eat my hat.

CCC: I think Jabberwock is referring to the nickname Kirishima gives him, "Blasty McSplode" in the FA translation.

Ah. It's Bakuhatsu-san Tarou. So…Explosion-san Taro. I didn't alter that from the original.

I'm no Japanese expert, but isn't "tako" (タコ?) = "octopus"?
Tentakoru? Another one of those punny names?

Goddamn, that's genius! -
Thanks to both CCC for answering and Ninja for clarifying my question!

facepalm
It was right there! Good job to Shouji for coming up with that!

Hmm, interesting.
A bit surprised the author doesn't give you a list of what the proper romanization of names should be, you being the official translator.

I wish :P
I tried reaching out on twitter once, to no avail. -
Hoho! Caught with your pants down!
nudge that's what the final volume release is for wink

How would you even translate that pun? I can't think of a way to combine "octopus" and "tentacle" in English in a way that doesn't sound dumb.

Tentactopus or maybe Tentacolino?

How about Otacon?

Tenctocle.
Or maybe Dr. Tentoctopus, but that could result in a lawsuit.
-
Tentocle? Octocle? Tenocto?
This was tricky…
-
octofeeler, tentasquid, squidtacle, tentacuttle?
-
Tentakrake or Squidlimbs (But that sounds more like a TMNT Henchman)
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Or maybe "Octobodi", a mix of Octopodi and body?
-
Tentopus or Tentalopod?
-
Octopuses are apparently part of the subclass Coleoidea, so Tentacole still works.

I don't think it works phonetically, but whatever. Tentacole sounds cool enough.

! So it wasn't Endeavor who picked Deku but… Granpa Batman?
-
! Well that's definitely not Endeavor. There's no predicting someone we've never met, but it looks like the old guy is a former user of All for One.
! The rest of classmates nominated get to choose from their offers, and Iida looks downright scary on that one page. I'm starting to get concerned for him. -
! Well, hello there new old mentor figure!
-
Interesting that in the cover page, even though its jsut a cover page and the other two characters have helmet mask thigns, Deku still doesn't have his "big smile" piece back.
Author (or editors or fans or whatever) seem to have decided it actually looked pretty dumb and just let it fade away.
-
! Gran Torino, huh?

! He's All Might's former Yuuei teacher.

! You should, if Midoriya's foreshadow-y narration is anything to go by.
-
! Kind of a boring choice. Seems editor driven…..

Also, avenger. He will probably go after Spock alone -
Octopuses are apparently part of the subclass Coleoidea, so Tentacole still works.
Arkur
You da real MVP.
-
If there's one fuck up that makes me want to go back in time to prevent my own conception it's Best Genist. I didn't notice they were jeans! I DIDNT NOTICE THEY WERE JEEEEANS!
-
Is it time for my summary yet?
! Mineta wants to go to Mt. Lady's office.
The little perv.
! The on-the-job session will last for a week.
Those who have nominations will be given their respective lists of employers to choose from.
Those without nominations will be given a list of 40 hero agencies that have agreed to accept students from Yuuei.
Of course, each agency specialises in different forms of heroics (for example, No. 13 specialises in search and rescue), so choose wisely.
They need to choose before the weekend, which is 2 days away.
! Amongst the heroes asking for Shouto is…Endeavor??
! Uravity wants to go work under some hero named Pistol Head or something similar [translating from Chinese], who has the ability to solidify air.
Deku is surprised because he thought Uravity would want something more similar to No. 13's line of work. She clarifies that that's her ultimate goal, but after her battle with Kacchan, she realised that getting stronger would open up more possibilities. Only doing what you aim would be too narrow-minded after all.
! All the while, Deku has been trying to strengthen his calves by performing the invisible chair (that's what it's called in Chinese. that move where you pretend to sit but don't actually sit on anything so that your leg muscles get stronger).
! After class, All Might comes to inform Deku of his single nomination.
It's from…Gran Torino! A hero who used to teach in Yuuei but for only a year, and was All Might's homeroom teacher.
Gran Torino knows about One for All, and All Might thinks this might be why he wanted Deku.
He was one of All Might's first allies, but because he started living in seclusion a long time ago, All Might didn't think to include him when he was mentioning people who knew about his powers the other day.
Was it because he saw All Might's methods and thought they were ineffective? Either way, even if it was originally All Might who wanted to train Deku, since he got this nomination, might as well go for it.....
...All the while, All Might is cowering in fear.
And one more thing!
Deku's hero costume has been repaired and returned. (We'll see if he keeps that bunny helmet...some other chapter)
! Some of the students made their decision right there on that day. Sniper Cowboy thinks they should probably take longer to consider it. Some of the students in his 3rd Year class are still regretting their choices even now.
Tenya has chosen to work with the Hosu Hero Department. Eraserhead thinks it's odd given his performance. Could it be...
! The time has come for the on-the-job experience! And the students get to take their costumes with them!
Small note: Tsukuyomi is going to Kyushu.
! Deku and Uravity confront Tenya about his brother. Deku heard on the news about the hero slayer Stain and Ingenium's encounter with him. If he really is troubled, Deku wants Tenya to tell him.
Because we're friends.
! Tenya reassures them that everything's fine.
But Deku would later come to regret not prying further (foreshadowing!).
! Deku has arrived at Gran Torino's place!
And enters to find an old man who tripped and fell while carrying a plate of sausages with ketchup.
Due to Torino's constant acts of dementia, Deku thinks he's wasting his time and attempts to leave.
But is cornered! by a serious Gran Torino who insists that Deku show him how much control he has over One for All.
! Just who is this decrepit old man?? Find out next chapter! -
Here's Chapter 46.
-
Wow, Tokoyami lecturing Iida with a proverb was gold.
-
You though Kacchan would become Sasuke, but actually Iida would become Sasuke instead! Nooooo
-
Kal-El hero office
-
That was good. The bit with Iida was ominous and it's nice to see Uraraka decide to widen her possibilities to get stronger. Also, looks like here's this manga's old man mentor figure.
-
Look, is Yoda in a superhero costume! Cute.
-
I love the retro title page.
