Gats continues to be the shining light in these chapters. What a cool guy.
Rebecca continues to be a disappointment in everything she does. Second only to King Rikku in being lame.

So Luffy switched places with Viola.. Meaning his back is wide open for Doflamingos attack.
This week we seen how Law could have escaped from Mingos string trap with Shambles and I do hope for next week showing Luffy escaping from that trap.
With Color of Conqueror haki blast that is.

Aren't we exaggerating a little bit?

At least she is just weak and not annoying like Vivi. I cringe everytime I see her in a Straw Hat spread.
Aren't we exaggerating a little bit?
I honestly don't think he is, in my years of reading One Piece and observing reactions of fans, haters and casual readers, Rebecca has got the strongest response out yet
Maybe there was once or twice, but it's not that wild a statement
Possibly Hody, based on how lame he was for what should've been the coolest fishman (I don't think anyone expected the great white shark fishman being so weak)

Its longest Strawhats stay in one place so people that dont have much to do/ much to worry about (no work, living with parents, otakus, teens, people with no other interest than manga related stuff) concentrate too much on negatives and only one side of the picture. Not accepting what they get even if its rather consistent with all the rest of this manga.
Maybe it would be also good idea to use break and start reading JoJo Bizarre or some seinen mangas like Vinland Saga or Vagabond ? Just to get head cleared from overthinking Dressrosa stuff ?
General question to many, not for specific person.
@joekido:
You should try this in every single chapter. And Dressrosa is a clear sign that Oda is suffering a fatigue here, it's like he is not paying attention to any details he is writing and leaving behind plot holes. So now he's going to have to explain all of them or he ends up a lame strategy: retcon
Some of the thing there are not plot holes .
For eg Zoro not able to cut magical strong DF strings .
I was half expecting a "Gear Fifth" panel :ninja:
she doesn't have CoO
Of course she has it. It is all she has to fight with her style. Check her fights in thwarting colosseum. And how she evaded hakuba.
This was the absolute worst chapter of One Piece I've bore witness to.
At least she is just weak and not annoying like Vivi. I cringe everytime I see her in a Straw Hat spread.
Tbh Rebecca doesn't vary so dramatically from Vivi.. If one were to criticize Vivi for yelling at the rebels to stop and crying for the state of her country, one would do the same for Rebecca in her country.

It does seem to be a consistent critique of the arc's chapters, not that I myself don't think her character arc didn't have bumps.
I think the problem is Rebecca isn't supposed to be hated like Hody, Spandam, or a Celestial Dragon, but some of her actions - or rather, inactions - seems to be grating on a lot of people. And I can understand that…..to an extent.
(I mean, I'm sure Shirahoshi of all characters got less vitriol than Rebecca)
Aren't you getting flustered over something that hasn't happened especially since her story arc isn't over.
I'm getting flustered because nothing has happened with her, at all.
Her entire character sends the message that pretty women should not be physical fighters which, combined with last arc's deconstruction of Tashigi, really makes it seem like Oda has some very strong political views on the role of female characters in fiction.

Yeah I got a few hits on Oda as well as Mangapanda here… I didn't criticize the pacing though, that it was less time passing every chapter for example, but could have. It's far from anything like a "review" though, lol.
There will be other Abridged's in the future I'm sure, and the next pun-based abridged will probably be after the end of the arc, summarizing the best ones from the ends of each battle. For example, when Sai beats Don Chinjao with his footwork, saying "Smell the stench of de-feet!"
All existing Abridged's (pun-based or normal like this one) are in this thread: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=41814
Why was I even hoping Rebecca might redeem herself somehow during that last stretch facepalm Actually, most female characters in this arc were shown in a less-flattering light. Viola was a nice exception, even though she didn't fight that much, she seemed capable. But no, Oda had to make sure that even she gets beaten up at least once and needs to be saved by a guy. Good grief.
EDIT: Also, I'll stay with my statement: The plot would've been much better if Rebecca's role was fused with King Rikku's. She was completely pointless.
EDIT 2:

My thoughts exactely. WHat also bothers me is how many people said "Nah, she's a fine character." As if they didn't even notice all those underlying themes.
so it would be one punch and fight end
I don't know if this means I've become a cynical person, but this chapter felt like a bore fest to me (and I read it immediately after Bleach, so it's serious). I simply couldn't relate to the cheap speech and how obvious everything was since the chapter started, you just knew what would happen and how it would happen and it was just like a waste of my time.
EDIT: And I don't want to even start on Oda's portrayal of Rebecca.
! For too long I tried to stay in the mid ground thinking that Oda's apparent sexism was well-intended and that he was actually an open minded person in a very sexist country, so at least he was trying. But you know what? No, he is not. Over and over again he is failing to produce female characters who are not reforcing bad stereotypes against both women and, mainly, fat women (I believe Marigold was the only fat woman in OP who was not meant to be seen as a walking joke?). Put that together with the fact the manga is not offering anything better than mediocre since the time-skip and I am seriously getting sick of Oda…
! ... man, never thought I would write something like that about him.
! On a side note, as a gay man I admit I like he always portrays the okama in a good light (although they are stereotyped too)
Well at least we had official confirmation that Wano will be this year ( that probably means December mind you)
woot really? can ya post a link, please? :>

Certainly her character had had an arch and made decisions. If your unhappy with those decisions that's perfectly reasonable since its your feelings. Maybe we differ on our view of nothing though.
I don't know oda, but to judge him based upon the story he rights for a comic book is like judging Stephen Colbert off of the character he portrays on his old tv show.
I'm not really qualified to analyze tashigi's character, however I can say Rebecca has been solidly represented as a character with consistency. I don't see where it's explicitly stated or implied that pretty women can't be hurt in this chapter given the blood on violet's face.
Her core character trait is based upon non-violence.
this chapter was an absolute waste of trees yet again, get it together oda

Any message can be taken from anything if you're already trying to find it. Unless you are actively trying to start some confrontational protest/discussion, I think it would just be easier to say you are disappointed that Rebecca's character didn't turn out as you had hoped.
Oda will always have those that have to be rescued in his story arcs. Law, Mansherry, and Rebecca just happen to be the ones this arc. Which is already an improvement on gender equality than previous ones.
As for Rebecca, I am most definitely disappointed she didn't become a stronger and likable character but I'm not going to take that as a slight on women while casually ignoring that there are stronger females in the story than her. I mean there are plenty of dude characters who get treated like crap by Oda just as much cough sanji. I would have loved for her to grow a backbone since I thought she had potential as a character. Which really, is all I care about from a Manga, not social/political/gender issue message sending.
@here:

Swore I was the only one that felt this way.
Can you even imagine how this episode will be in anime form? 99% of the episode was filler. They better do a two chapter special for the defeat of Doflamingo.
Vergo went down in ch690,
So doffy must go down in ch790..I hope that's not the reason why the pacing is slow.

(I mean, I'm sure Shirahoshi of all characters got less vitriol than Rebecca)
People in general don't seem to like the princess characters all that much - lots disliked Vivi in Arabasta and Shirahoshi fans are pretty rare
One thing I'll say though about Shirahoshi is that the crying was more or less part of her character from the get go, we learned that early in the story and Luffy commented on it plenty, so I just assume people accepted it more easily as an integral part of her personality
That's what disappointed me about Rebecca, I expected something else, I've misread the situation and believed that the character arc for her would culminate in becoming a strong defender of the country, all that stuff about using a blunt sword and always avoiding attacks gave me expectation that she would overcome that, be a important part in the defeat of Diamante (Kyros would be too weak with his one leg so father and daughter could defeat the murderer of Scarlet together) but Oda wanted it to be about Rebecca never really having the mentality of a fighter and Kyros' perceived failing of taking care of her
…which is fine I guess, it's his story and all, but I can't feel like the first method would've been more fun to read about. The theme of overcoming extreme difficulties and triumphing is more appealing to read about then say someone realizing they aren't up to the challenge and depending on their parent.
all that said, I still think that for the rest of the series, Oda should seriously cut that shit out, this is like Nr. 5 of the crying princess/royalty type of character
Vivi, Shirahoshi and Rebecca, while Violet and Manshelly actually use tears for combat, it's enough for god's sake
What's happening on the 7/18 that was mentioned on the first page?
I'm not really qualified to analyze tashigi's character, however I can say Rebecca has been solidly represented as a character with consistency. I don't see where it's explicitly stated or implied that pretty women can't be hurt in this chapter given the blood on violet's face.
The point is not about "Women can't get hurt", it's about "Women shouldn't fight". And he had plenty examples of that during this arc.
Jaroda (that art -lady?) - managed to take out some strawhats, but messed the mission up because one of them said "Hey, we're totally cool."
Baby 5 - changed sides and betrayed the people who raised her because someone said something remotely nice. Because, all girls are into that love-schmuck, right?
The lady with the vacuum cleaner - you know how that went
Rebecca - gets destroyed in almost every fight she was in, despite her experience and Haki-abilities. Says she doesn't want to be protected anymore but repeately calls out for people to save her
Viola - challenges an overpowered enemy for no reason (what was she expecting?), only to get destroyed withing minutes to be saved by a guy.
Slow-paced chapter just like the last ones… Bird GOD Cage wasting almost half of the chapter, and a 10 seconds countdown wasting the another one.
Even though it was nice to see Violet trying to face DD, she's definetly no match for him but at least she managed to get a few more seconds till Luffy's recovery. DD using parasite to make her and Rebecca fight… I saw that coming . Gatz made a nice speech (a bit too long) and the hype around Luffy/Lucy is enormous now, I hope he finally finish this fight next chapter.
I always thought that the power of Princess Mansherry was very exaggerated but the time limit is not that big so its ok. Powers involving cure or any sort of healing are always too hax, but Oda seems to dose well this one.
Finally at the end of the chapter when Violet is about to get sliced up by Rebecca Luffy appears thanks to Law (am I the only one who thought that his entry was really cool? ) and saves the day. And just when things are getting good the chapter ends and no OP next week :/, but its ok, it was predictable.
Regular chapter, I'll give it a 5/10.
Pretty good chapter. Worst part was finding out that there's a break next week on such a big cliffhanger, but the Dofla fight has been well-handled, in my opinion. At least since it became a 1 on 1. Symptoms of a weekly release with breaks and Golden weeks, I'd wager.
Yeah. This chapter and the last was just one big buildup. And now we get to wait two weeks for the good stuff.
Vivi was not a crybaby, please don't compare her with Rebecca.

Not much to add, but I do agree on both fronts.
Gatz is a badass, i quite enjoyed the chapter.
Gatz is a badass, i quite enjoyed the chapter.
How? Nothing moved along except for Viola getting bloodied, Rebecca being saved(as if the focus is on her again), and Gatz taking away from the heat of King Riku's speech. There has to be a reason why Oda added all this unnecessary filler in this chapter.
Cavendish is like the only guy that just stands there doing nothing? At least Sabo has his hands full ( even if it din't look that way) with Burgess.
Comparing Vivi to Rebecca is almost insulting.
The length Vivi went through to save her country and seeing how desperate she was to stop the fighting really made her come across as a strong character. Like she was really trying her best in this desperate situation and it made me want to support her
Rebecca on the other hand just comes across as pathetic. Her getting into the finals of the coliseum match was cool but it did really feel like she lucked her way into that. Ever since then she's just been bumbling about with other more important characters and just being a bit of a burden to everyone around her. I don't want to support her I just want her to get out of the way.
@uniaka:

I think Oda did it on purpose. The guy that wants to be famous doesn't get to shine

Which is weird because considering all the filler in this chapter, you'd swear the focus would change to Sabo and Burgess.

Filler? Then half of the Water 7 arc must have felt like it was filler for you. Again, what do you understand is filler? Coz nothing in this chapter was, much like all the previous ones and the whole arc.
And it's in the guy's right to express how he enjoyed the chapter as much as is in your right to show your disappointment of it.
How? Nothing moved along except for Viola getting bloodied, Rebecca being saved(as if the focus is on her again), and Gatz taking away from the heat of King Riku's speech. There has to be a reason why Oda added all this unnecessary filler in this chapter.
What if… None of it was filler and it was all important to the story that Oda is trying to tell?? What if.. There are more chapters to be had.. No, it can't be.
What does Ojikan Death means?

Yes really, according to Shueisha Wano Kingdom figures are set for release in October based on their calendar
http://i.imgur.com/OGUjOlf.jpg
So based on this we should be well within that arc before October, maybe August - September time, before that we're like to have a breather at Zou or some other place.
Which is weird because considering all the filler in this chapter, you'd swear the focus would change to Sabo and Burgess.
Imagine Burgess landing a hit on Sabo, even one hit would make me take back every bad thing I said about Burgess.
There are things i don't like about rebecca , her not getting to show off vs don is not one of them.
Oda could have done better with her during the arc but i am happy that don treat her like a nobody .
Ugh this chapter…..
Can this arc please end already?
Imagine Burgess landing a hit on Sabo, even one hit would make me take back every bad thing I said about Burgess.
I agree. But Oda is living a dangerous life. Imagine all the hate mail from Ace f… Ups i meant Sabo fans!

Stuff like this matters because fiction is born out of imitation of reality and people might take it this way. It might not be an intentional message that girls can't fight, but treating female characters like that certainly has it's implications. At this point in OP this stuff is a far more common with girls. There are a few examples with guys, like Law and Ace, but even they eventually got to do something despite being rescued. It's such a female character specific thing at this point.
I agree. But Oda is living a dangerous life. Imagine all the hate mail from Ace f… Ups i meant Sabo fans!
My only problem as a Sabo fan/ Ace fan would be if that attack would do serious damage on Sabo, since even admiral din't manage that.
"I won't hate or hold a grudge against you." - Viola to Rebecca
Bellamy said the same thing to Luffy.
Yeah…only interesting thing of note I found in this chapter.
