Toei Animation Begins Production on Dragon Ball Super
Drawn From a Plot By The Brand’s Original Creator, Dragon Ball Super Is The First New Series In Eighteen YearsFor Immediate Release:
**TOKYO (April 28, 2015) – Toei Animation has announced production on **Dragon Ball Super (Japanese title; tentative for English release), the first all-new Dragon Ball television series to be released in 18 years. Following the recent events of the hit feature film, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, **Dragon Ball Super will debut in Japan in July 2015.
Reuniting the franchise’s iconic characters, Dragon Ball Super will follow the aftermath of Goku’s fierce battle with Majin Buu, as he attempts to maintain earth’s fragile peace. Overseen by Dragon Ball’s original creator, Akira Toriyama and produced with Fuji Television, Dragon Ball Super will draw on its historic past to create a bold, new universe welcoming to fans and endearing to new viewers.
Introduced as a manga in Weekly Shonen Jump (published from SHUEISHA Inc.) in 1984, Dragon Ball has evolved into a globally beloved brand. Seen in more than 70 countries, with over 230 million copies of its comic books sold, DragonBall remains one of the most popular anime series of all time.
“Having loved _Dragon Ball since childhood, it is very exciting to be a part of this project,” said Osamu Nozaki, producer for Fuji Television. “Mr. Toriyama has developed a plot that’s not only a dream come true for Dragon Ball’s millions of fans, but one that will foster in a new generation of viewers.”
“When I joined Toei Animation, one of my first assignments saw me working on the production of Dragon Ball Z,”said Atsushi Kido, producer for Toei Animation. “While there for only a short period of time, being a part of the series left a lasting impression. We look forward to carrying on Dragon Ball’s tremendous legacy, bringing audiences a brand new Dragon Ball with the same sense of heart and commitment that went into past Dragon Ball productions.”
“I’ve used the word ‘cho’ (super) in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin,” said Masako Nozawa, Japanese voice actress of Dragon Ball’s Son Goku, Son Gohan and Son Goten. “I hope that this series will last a long time and have the same impact around the world as its predecessor._******
some of Akira's other designs were pretty good. Tobal #1 had some good ones. I wouldn't have minded seeing some of them in DBZ.
Like this girl:
Bulkier version of Ayla.
If there's anything I hope for, it's less Ki blasts and more hand to hand. That's was DB's strongest point, anyway. As far as I'm concerned.
I never really felt that the Ki blast really overtook the traditional hand to hand fighting in the series it did become a way for the Villains and the main cast to show off or finish off their opponents.
Whats left is someone rebooting Dragon Ball Evolution.
I never really felt that the Ki blast really overtook the traditional hand to hand fighting in the series it did become a way for the Villains and the main cast to show off or finish off their opponents.
Kinda felt that Ki blasts took all the spotlights with time.
Of course, when the villain has unlimited regeneration, vaporizing him, instead of trying to break his neck is a sensible thing to do.
We do know what happens next. There's a tournament and Goku meets Uub. The end.
Ah, so it's post-Buu in the sense that it's before Uub, not following the manga ending why did I think otherwise?
@Mr.:
I may be alone on this, but I'm really only in on this for the goofy comedy along with fun character interactions.
Vegeta dancing and singing a Bingo song? Krillin the police officer? :D
But really the possibilities are endless. There's many interactions I'd like to see myself….Goku and 18, Piccolo and Bulma, Vegeta and ChiChi, I forgot Dragon Ball has a lot of characters to work with, even if not all of them are Super Saiyan+ level.

Frieza didn't have it that easy unfortunately (originally).
I want a view into Vegeta's daily married life.
Actually, wait, I want to see Vegeta and Bulma's wedding.
@Cyan:
Actually, wait, I want to see Vegeta and Bulma's wedding.
They porked. Ergo, Bulma is Vegeta's mate for life. It's the closest approximation Saiyans have to marriage.
Bulma later filled out an official form for tax purposes
I want to see Jacos series animated, if Toei is smart they would take advantage of Hanaes popularity(Tokyo Ghoul, Aldnoah Zero).
I dont mind if Tori retcons the ending.

I want to see how they even started dating I could easily see Bulma putting the moves on Vegeta instead of the other way around.
"Right after the fight with Majin Buu". Hmm. Again, no BoG nor F? Weeeird.
"Goku fighting to keep Earth's fragile peace". Fragile peace? Are you fucking kidding me? According to the series epilogue, the Earth was in absolute peace for 10-15 years. In fact, if GT's beginning is canon, the Earth was in total, absolute peace for like 25-30 years in a row. C'mon.
"Overseen by Toriyama". So no direct input? Wasn't GT also "overseen" by Toriyama? Wathever.
Honestly? At first I thought no Toriyama was the cause of GT sucking. But at this point. . .I'm starting to doubt it. The man has lost his touch anyways (Jaco was reaaally meh), and it seems like he has forgotten nearly every single thing that has to do with Dragon Ball beyond "this guy is Goku, this guy is Vegeta, and I'm not entirely sure if this girl is Bulma or Chi-Chi. Oh, and the bald one is Krillin. Or Tien? Or Roshi. Wathever, let's put the three of them in the movie".
Maybe I got too angry with Gohan's treatment during GT, and I know we've all been over this, but back then I honestly thought only a complete moron would mess him up that bad. Lost his Mystic powers? Weaker than Vegeta? Barely regular super saiyan level, if even that? Man, you gotta be stupid to fuck that up. Well, it seems Toriyama came up with exactly THAT scenario for the last movie! Gohan goes Super Saiyan again as a sign of weakness and is no longer considered even one of the main fighters. The guy that went toe to toe with Super Buu can't do shit anymore. There's "not seeing Gohan as main character material" and then there's "I wipe my ass with Gohan's face every day first thing in the morning".
And that's just basically the tip of the iceberg, the one thing that sticks out the most but that is just an example of how much Toriyama is unable to remember anymore. He admitted to remember Goku only having 2 transformations, not 3. He admitted he didn't know who the hell Lunch or Tao Pai Pai were even supposed to be. Sorry, but Toriyama being in charge wouldn't be that assuring of the product's quality. At all.
Of course, neither is Toei taking care of it AGAIN, cause that's just spelling GT all over again…
...though GT at least had the common sense and the balls of advancing the story. The hell's the matter with the two movies and the tv series setting stuff BEFORE the end of the original series? As someone's just said, we know where that goes: Goku fights Uub, goes to train him, the end.
And finally, with all this stuff happening BEFORE Uub's appearance, they're basically destroying the epilogue. After all this Super God Saiyan Super Saiyan God 3 Saiyan God Super nonsense, these new uber foes that dwarf Buu's power big time, etc. . .the hell is Goku's reason for salivating at the thought of fighting Buu's reincarnation at the end of the series? If we go by this canon-changing new canon, Goku should have exactly 0 hype and anticipation to face Buu's reincarnation. "If I train this Uub kid for 10 years straight he'll be as strong as Buu was! Too bad my power level right now is about 100000 times beyond that. . .".
…though GT at least had the common sense and the balls of advancing the story. The hell's the matter with the two movies and the tv series setting stuff BEFORE the end of the original series? As someone's just said, we know where that goes: Goku fights Uub, goes to train him, the end.
Because even though to anyone paying attention to the details, GT not longer fits at all (from the Pilof gang being young if nothing else… the various power ups you can conceivably explain away) they don't want to come right out and say "yeah this doesn't count anymore." and following GT to the end means its 100 years later and everyone but Goku is dead and nobody wants that. Same way they'll never outright say "this online game or this contradictory special doesn't count" even if its totally ignored.
Hell when you get down to it, only like 3 of the 13 movies really fit in continuity, and none of the dragonball ones do, but they don't disown those others either.
So maybe rather than going "man, this disregards the ending of the series" just... roll with it instead. "Well this is clearly the movie line rather than the manga line. The one that had Cooler and the cast fighting fighting Broli right before the Cell games, and Janemba while Buu was going on and Vegeta was still dead for about a day.... and Bardock travelign in time, Vegeta has a brother, and both Vegeta and Broli achieve Super 3." Alternate path, not contradiction.
(And all that said, if Super Saiyan God and Frieza's trained power up form and whatever the hfil else Beers and Whis are teaching are things achievable by short 4 month spans of training, presumably Uub could be taught these things too. )
C'mon.

Honestly? At first I thought no Toriyama was the cause of GT sucking. But at this point. . .I'm starting to doubt it.
In all honesty, I expect nothing better than GT. We can expect worse animation, worst storyline focused on Super Duper Mega Super Saiyan Super God, and to make everything worst, it doesn't fit with the ending of the series. Which some people like to disregard because of personal taste of whatever, but no. Uub happened and that's the end. Filling gaps in those years after Buu makes no sense whatsoever, messes with a long well established ending and doesn't add anything meaningful to the story.
If they want to expand they HAVE to take it from after Buu, and make do as if GT never existed, which is "unofficially" happening with all these transformations bullshit. With all these new stuff they are not only disregarding GT but the of the manga also, son overall they are destroying pre-established things in order to add bullshit that doesn't fit within the storyline. But whatever, seriously fuck all this.
I don't know if I made sense or not… but I had to let it out.
(And all that said, if Super Saiyan God and Frieza's trained power up form and whatever the hfil else Beers and Whis are teaching are things achievable by short 4 month spans of training, presumably Uub could be taught these things too. )
Only for him to get worfed by the big bad or his subordinate.
Kai, sailor moon and one piece anime are all kinda lame or cheap, because of toei. I hope super will turn out good.
Also, akira continueing his manga story with a anime series. If only there was another author who could do this. Not spend a lot of time drawing, but just write story scripts and scribble some loose character sketches for madhouse to animate. ;)
canon and the like
I guess I shouldn't be that fixated with canon, but it bothers the hell out of me. But scratch canon for a while. I just don't see the gain in doing something that's "1 or 2 years after Buu, but 7-8 years before Uub". It's stupidly specific, and why's there any need for that? Wait a little and you have end of DB Pan, which was more likable in 10 pages than her GT incarnation was in 65 episodes; you have teenager Goten and Trunks; you have kid Uub…there's plenty to play with and mix. 1-2 years after Buu basically let's you have toddler Pan, thus not even a character, and that's it. Goten and Trunks stay the same, no Uub, nothing to play with. It's boring, honestly.
But canon is the big elefant in the room. With Toriyama's heavy presence in the last two movies you'd think they're supposed to be part of the ongoing canon. They fit the timeline, they explain the moment when everyone knows Videl is pregnant, they try to fit Beerus in the regular timeline (had connections with Freeza and King Vegeta, for example), bring back Freeza and try to fit everything into a coherent timeline. . .it seems they're making an extra effort so there's no doubt this is legit, not just another pseudo recap movie. Plus all the SSGSS stuff; hard to believe they made all of that up if it's not going to be a staple from now on of the DB Mythos.
Yeah, Goku can train Uub to be as strong as a SSGSS. . .but he no longer needs that? I mean, Vegeta in his current state is a worthy rival. Beerus. Whiz. The promised new threat. Alternate universe Gods of Destruction. DB's conclusion being "finally, he's here, the guy I've been waiting for 10-15 long years! The reincarnation of my strongest foe to date!" stops making sense if we accomodate the new movies + new series into the canon. Cause Toriyama is involved and whatnot, apparently, so. . .canon?
But yeah, let's stop this canon talk for now. July is pretty soon, honestly, so we'll see what's it all gonna be.
I don't know if I made sense or not… but I had to let it out.
You were obviously writing your bit out while I was writing mine but…
they're really not breaking anything more than the movies already did, and everyone was perfectly fine with those.

Yeap, I know. I hate every Dragon Ball movie in existence anyway.
some more Akira designs, who knows they might have some similarities in the new show?
They porked. Ergo, Bulma is Vegeta's mate for life. It's the closest approximation Saiyans have to marriage.

I wonder if Vegeta took her family name (lol)

Hmm, how come?

Well, not hate. I just find them to be boring. Plot wise (?). Except movie 13, may be?

A lot of them have the trend of some super powered villain attacking, Goku's friends take on minions/stall, then main villain defeats them, Goku starts to fight -> loses -> edge to help him turn the tide and kill the baddy. But I still liked some of them:
-Movie 3 had Tullece, basicially the character if Goku did not hit his head and became a planet conquerer. It's like looking in a sinister mirror, so I appreciated the idea a lot.
-Movie 12 was bad-guy chaos, bunch of villains escape Hell, Gohan kills Freeza like nobody's business, fusion power, and the best part - Goten and Trunks fight the Dragon Ball equivalent of Hitler. What?!
-Movie 13 did feel a little slow in parts, the villain was just some giant monster…..and little Vegeta screentime....I'll admit it was good to see Goku alive with his sons and stuff. Plus I liked the Tapion-Trunks bonding (former reminded me so much of Link)
-Movie 14 was more comedy-based than the others, and it definitely falls into the trap of "deus ex machina to help Goku save the day!", but Beerus was extremely entertaining as a character, plus Vegeta gets to act like a clown. Concept of Gods and other universes was entertaining, although I could've passed on SSJGod.
I think my least favorite is 11. Nice to see Mr. Satan hijinxs, 18/Krillin/Goten/Trunks take center stage....but Bio-Broly?? Ugh.
There are good things, like the camping scene at the beginning of movie 3 or 5(?) don't remember right now, Tapion's story I think is good, as it expands the universe, etc. But I feel they lack in creativity for the most part. For Battle of Gods, I like Beerus and Whis, but the overall plot, I wanna say, is rather disappointing, specially the SSJ God thing.
I don't care how bad this new series could be. I want to see it.
If DB evolution didnt exist we wouldnt have this revival by Toriyama right now. Thank u Hollywood, Justin Chatwin.

I feel like they'd be producing more Dragonball content regardless of a poorly received American adaptation.
Unless you're insinuating that Toriyama has returned to DB because of all of the fans that were insulted by that movie? In which case, is that true?

Ironically enough, it has a Japanese dub.

Battle of the Gods is actually Movie 15.
"The Path to Power" (retelling of the original story) came out theatrically between them.
(Though I suppose if we want to get really technical we need to count the first 3 DB movies as well… And maybe the tv movies which included Bardock, Trunks, and the one everyone ignores cause GT, A Hero's Legacy)
@Daz:
Eh, if they start getting a little more creative with the Ki-energy fighting I'll be slightly interested. More stuff like Hellzone Grenade or Energy Donuts, less FINAL KAMEHAME FLASH BEAM X200 TINTED PURPLE THIS TIME
It seems the new movie has pretty decent action and fight choreography.
Anyway, it can't be any worse than beamfest GT. Goku seemed to forget everything about fighting except how to do a Kamehameha.
Heck, Goku's characterization was a mess through pretty much all of GT. With Toriyama on board i'm confident about that, at least. In a couple of interviews he sounded annoyed by the way anime writers handle him sometimes.

Hey I for one would be thrilled for more purple tinted attacks
(but otherwise yeah)
Toriyama is out of ideas now. Revival of F was one of the WORST things ever creating unORIGINAL transformations and plots only to make money.
Now what? A plot surrounding the Demon World? The other GODS of DEstruction of the other Universes? Really, STOP TORIYAMA.
Imagine what the Dragonball timeline continuity discussions will look like 10 years from now.
spoiler goku does everything

I think so too, he should hang up his belt as a classic and leave it at that. Even though BoG wasn't to bad I enjoyed it. Revival of F looks kinda lame but I'll have to wait and see, it might be interesting if there's other Gods might be interesting just a little hesitant that the series might be ruined.
hopefully this new series will focus on goten and trunks

I wont mind if he copies DB Multiverse.
If Togashi doesnt plan in doing more HxH, wish he could help Tori with the series(he is a big fan of DB), the writing would improve tremendously..

Yes, please. I totally want to see 10 consecutive chapters of the world's most brilliant and WORDY bureaucrats talking about the specifics of space travel for the upcoming mass migration to Namek while Goku talks for an entire chapter about the intricacies of the art of properly wearing a martial arts gi and its significance (only to throw the gi to the trash can right afterwards and wear only a shirt and some shorts for the rest of the series) while Cell invades the Dog King's kingdom and then falls in love with that snow girl while playing some excruciatingly detailed Rock-Paper-Scissors games where the fate of the world is at stake.
And then, after a 2 year break, Togashi gets bored with the scenario and makes the villains catch a particularly persistent cold with a side dish of gastroenteritisand they die. And there's no space travel to Namek cause the world ran out of space-fuel, but, who cares about space travel when we can go to that never-seen-before secret part of the world where stronger monsters live? And we can have another 10-15 "bureacracy arc" that's very WORDY and that doesn't even skip the minutest of details only to disregard the travel once again cause new DQ's is out, and now it has an online function and that's far too big a temptation to let it slide.
Thankfully, and being DB an action manga, throughout all of this stuff we do see a couple of really exciting fights: Korin the cat fights against Boss Rabbit in a battle of wits, and Roshi's turtle duels Farmer with a Shotgun in a highly psychological bout where only the sanest mind will come out the winner.

Off topic though. I've seen that avatar from Google image search. But I don't remember who she is, or what movie this character is from? Is she the snow queen?
