Well I haven't yet watched any space dandy, so i won't be watching the video… what's the announcement?
-
She's done making videos and believe is leaving thatguywiththeglasses.
She has been producing less material anyways and I think she does ANN articles now, but still.
Would've liked her to do a Digimon Frontier retrospective, though I guess that was probably after her time/nostalgia. Also forgot if she finished her Tamer vids… It's been awhile since I watched those vids.--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Her official farewell video comes out tomorrow.
-
Sucks. I actually really like her videos, but I kind of get why she's done. She's been busy with other projects. She's been working on this visual novel game called Pretty Little Liars, which looks kind of cool.
Not to mention with the whole GamerGame thing, there's been some animosity toward the TGWTG crew, especially the ladies. And especially Todd, cause holy shit, he is going in on these people.

Okay, to sum up GamerGate, and I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible (I'm not GamerGate).
[hide]Basically, it's a movement going on right now that many have connected together to 'bring down corruption in video game journalism'. It started when Zoe Quinn, a video game developer, was exposed by her ex-boyfriend to have cheated on him with several men. Her ex-boyfriend revealed this fact on his own blog, confessing the names of some of the men she slept with. Some at least one of them she had slept with was a Kotaku journalist, one that provided favorable coverage/good reviews for the game she was developing. This implied that she offered sex in exchange for favorable coverage. When people freaked out and attacked Zoe Quinn, many of her friends and many game journalists came to her defense. Further rumors of Zoe Quinn's misdeeds began to spread, and game journalists countered with complaints of sexism. Ultimately, people got together and created a movement called #GamerGate, where they would strive together to bring an end to the corruption in video game journalism.
While corruption DOES exist in the video game journalism, the movement has issues in general because not everyone is a part of the movement for good intent. Many are harassing various journalists, spreading lies and overall the cruel deeds you'd expect from the worst of the Internet. On the other hand, various journalists are speaking up against #GamerGate in the worst way possible: By complaining that these people are nothing more than lifeless nerds who will never get laid and live in their mother's basement for the rest of their lives. Whether you agree with #GamerGate or not, that's quite unprofessional of a response. Zoe Quinn, herself, hasn't handled this matter in the most professional way either.
Regardless, the movement has been losing steam mostly because of the ill-intent of some of the members. Some are acting like this is an anti-feminist movement and attacking people like Anita Sarkeesian (who managed to release one of her videos in the midst of this chaos). People within #GamerGate who might have had good intentions are being brought down by the others in their group who are being horrible in general. It's just a mess overall.[/hide]
As to why TGWTG is associated with this problem, it's half because they can be portrayed as "media journalists", and half because majority of TGWTG members are feminists. Lindsay, Todd, Jesu, Oancitizen, Linkara, and even Spoony (who has been quite vocal against GG) are feminists. So people have been approaching them on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and video comments talking about GamerGate. Most of them have treaded lightly on the subject. Lindsay has thrown her fifty cents in from time to time. Todd straight up made a full article against GG. Again, GamerGate isn't an anti-feminist movement, but it's attracted a lot of anti-feminists.
-
GamerGate was a poorly veiled excuse to attack feminists and social justice warriors created by 4chan That automatically invalidates anything the movement has to say and calling people who have nothing better to do than be garbage human being in general can not be better than described than "a lifeless nerd".
-
I wasn't there at ground Zero and I haven't read through an entire timeline/point by point story on the situation, but my understanding of the whole "GamerGate" situation, specifically the part where claims of Sexism and Anti-feminism comes from is this, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong:
! There's no actual proof Zoe Quinn slept with anyone for favorable game coverage. She happened to sleep with someone who gave her favorable coverage, but it never came out that someone who would know (IE: The guy she slept with, or text messages/emails from Zoe herself becoming public etc) gave information that PROVED that's what happened. Everybody just basically saw one of the people she slept with had that connection to her and drew their own conclusions. Insider's wording (Saying this was "implied" rather than stating it was "proven") leads me to believe my understanding is correct.
! If this is indeed the case, then I can tell you, accusations of Sexism and Anti-Feminism aren't far off the mark.
! We as a society have different standards when it comes to men and women and sex. Promiscuous Men tend to get treated favorably by their peers for having a lot of sex. A promiscuous guy has skills and is someone to be looked up to for his ability to bed so many ladies. A promiscuous WOMAN on the other hand, is treated poorly. As a slut, whore, et al.
! The Sexist part of this comes in when you realize that everyone who is against Zoe Quinn immediately assuming she did it basically based on evidence that's circumstantial at best, because she's a woman and its her job to be a perfectly chaste little princess. I mean, either way, if she cheated on her boyfriend she's still not a saint in all of this, but if the only evidence to support her sleeping with that guy for a good review score is that she happened to sleep with him at some point before the review happened, then where's the evidence to say THAT happened and that he didn't threaten to give her a BAD score if she DIDN'T Sleep with him for example? Or maybe those two people were just attracted to each other and wanted to have sex. Chances are, if that happened, the first thing on their minds probably wasn't "What will the world think if he ever has to cover one of her games?!" Even if evidence comes out later that proves she definitely sold sex for a good review beyond a shadow of a doubt, the fact that everyone jumped to the assumption she was guilty before any actual evidence was presented is extremely telling of how these people think about sex and women.
! TL;DR: the claims of Sexism and defense of Zoe Quinn here doesn't and shouldn't be defending her for what she did (Again, either way she still cheated on her boyfriend) But it should be fighting against the entire concept that she's immediately guilty of selling sex for a good review without any evidence because "Lol, men are allowed to want sex, but a woman wanting sex is immediately evil and up to something". -
Cracked did a bunch of articles on how bogus and insidious the whole thing was:

I do think think GamerGate is absolute shit, but I didn't want to cause a fight with anyone on this thread who might be GamerGate because a) That would be a pain in the ass and I don't care enough about it and b) It could possibly be off-topic.

The sketch parts just arent the same without Rachael :/ And they are starting to feel a little forced. I remember back in the days he used to bring in Rob or some other TGWTG reviewer when he needed another voice to riff with, and that sorta felt more natural. I dont think the Trope-bit really connected with the review. Also, i dont have anything against the dude who does these characters (for some reason i cant remember his name) but there´s only so many characters a guy can do. Nobody has an unlimited range of comedic characters they can pull off even if its just for short cameos, and his appearances are starting to feel… bland.
Just saying, some variation would be nice. Let that guy (and the new girl) sit out on a couple reviews and bring in Linkara, Lindsay, Rob or even Spoony if Doug REALLY needs someone else to play off.
I remember part of the reason for Dougs temporary retirement of the Critic character was that he felt that it was becoming repetitive and forced and hard to come up with original stuff. Im starting to feel that way about watching these skits... But then im not Doug Walker. -
I dunno, I think Tamara is just fine as a replacement for Rachel. ANd Malcom is actually really talented it seems. The skitty bits work just fine as a regular ensemble.
ANd he did a crossover with Spoony just a few weeks ago.
-
Also, he did a review with linkara and spoony a couple of months ago.
-
I wasnt talking about crossovers, i was refering to the skit parts in the regular "Solo" NC reviews. I just think it would be cool to mix things up a little, so the show doesnt become to formulaic. Im not saying Malcom hasnt made me laugh or that he cant act, i just think i would enjoy the reviews more if things became less predictable. Or heck, just give me more Rob, he has such a great screen presence and charisma. He too can really act if you ask me. The Gandalf-Santa christ bit from the son of the mask review is probably my favourite NC skit of all time.
I guess my point is this: if you´re gonna include skits and comedic bits in your reviews (wich is not a bad idea when you have a talent for comedic writing) and you have such a great network of talented, funny people- Why limit yourself to use the same actors in almost every review? judging by the comments on TGWTG.com, alot of people seem to enjoy the quick surprise appearances.
-
I'm pretty sure Tamara and Malcom are under contract so not utilizing them would be mostly a waste. I mean, they are hired STRICTLY to do the skits. I'm not sure what other function they really play.
-
Basically, my undestanding of that situation is that Doug didn't want to keep doing the Critic because he felt the old, skitless format had gotten repetitive.
So he retired the Critic and moved onto other things. The other things he wanted to do manifested as "Demo Reel" and he hired actors and got at least Malcom and Rachel in on contract to work on that show. Then that show tanked.
The Skits in the new Critic stuff is supposed to be a way for Doug to actually flex his writing muscle and do the different kind of work Demo Reel was supposed to be. Another big factor, or so I've heard, is that he was either contractually obligated to, or just wanted to do Malcom and Rachel a solid by continuing to give them work putting them in these skits.
-
Obviously the pay scheme is at least somewhat behind the scenes, but yeah… I get the impression Malcomn and Tamara are actually on payroll... while anyone else doing a crossover or cameo is doing it on their own time as a favor, or vice versa for DOug cameoing in one of theirs. (That was certainly the case for the anniversary specials.)
Sure, doing crossovers might be more fun and give you exposure to a wider audeince, but if a different area is hosting a video within it, presumably that person is still getting all the money. They might have a setup where major crossovers are split some... and I know Doug tosses some of his check to the lesser contributors, so maybe crossovers get some of the immediate check... but I can't imagine them getting paid any sort of residuals a year after the fact.
-
Yeah, Doug has a contract set up with these guys - he has to pay them OR if he wants to let them go before the agreed date, he has to pay a fee for breaking the contract. Normal stuff. The girl that went earlier, did so, because she was the one breaking the contract - she found a new job elsewhere. Honestly - I hate these sketches and skip'em, I'd watch ten Blockbuster Buster reviews before I'd want to watch whatever Doug puts between his stuff. Also - oh, Todd. You're really not cut out to review movies… Please, forget about that Madonna crap, there's a lot of bad musicals and old Top 10 Best/Worst of Some Old Year lists to be had instead.

Going off Aru's critique. Its interesting the older I get the more I realize that alot of the internet celebrities I used to follow such as the Nerd or anyone on TGWTG aren't experts in their field. More or less 10 years ago I would considered them absolute truth, but after working on projects I realize its far from it. Maybe I should go check out their older to reviews to see if they seem more knowledgeable.
Like I wanted to believe Doug was a great writer and a movie genius when I was little. But now I just think he struck lightning with the original Nostalgic Critic and it was coincidental. Same with AVGN.

Kinda of a jerk move to leave the number 1 as a surprise… but given the criteria I guess of haloweeny box office flop in the 80's thts gained a cult following, it'll either have to be Evil Dead or Monster Squad.
Given what Doug usually goes for, I'm guessing Monster Squad and lots of jokes about Wolfman having nards.

You've just seen a lot more footage and time with them, so you see their real personalities and opinions seep through, and have a better idea of where their weaknesses are.
Plus, the shtick grows thin… its why neither Nerd or Critic do the angry bits much anymore and focus on other stuff. The style and tone changes and evolves... as it does with ANY long running series. Of course once you've seen 200 episodes it'll pale compared to what you remember from the original discovery, be it web reviewers, or Thundercats or Adventure Time or the Simpsons or South Park or One Piece. Even if something is as sharp as it ever was, it won't feel as fresh when its been with you for years and you've had a chance to soak in entirely the creator's strengths, weaknesses and habits..
Like I wanted to believe Doug was a great writer and a movie genius when I was little. But now I just think he struck lightning with the original Nostalgic Critic and it was coincidental. Same with AVGN.
He is a decent writer, he's just not doing stuff up your alley. He has grown and gotten better as its all gone along. It'll all more polished and professional now… but maybe not as passionate as it once was. (Though of course thats why he took off the 10 year barrier, so he could do whatever he was actually inspired to do.)
-
I'm surprised how popular Oculus is. I saw it without knowing any opinions about it, and I thought it was okay. The ending is ridiculously predictable, but I guess that's not the point. The point is the chaos that ensues as you're forced to figure out what is real and what is not real. And that was effective, I will admit. And I very much sympathized and felt bad for these siblings.
I'm just surprised by how popular it is, considering how most horror movies get the "it wasn't scary and it was stupid, so who cares" bit.
-

Really? I thought it was Rob doing all the writing (much like how Mike is totally writing everything for James in his AVGN things. It's actually kinda funny seeing James and Mike with the latter coming up with most of the more clever observations and cracking jokes more effectively than the former).
-
Really? I thought it was Rob doing all the writing
Rob contributes to the writing in terms of helping make jokes when they watch the movies together, but Doug is the main force if the episode credits and commentaries are any indication. It's impossible to say how much Rob contributes obviously, but much of the time its "Doug showed me the script and…" or "Doug is working on the script"... and there's no question that Doug picks the topics, and the point and theme of any given episode is Doug's point to make.
Top 11 Avatars was absolutely all Doug. Rob didn't even have a say on what made it to the list, or else we would have had Tales of Ba Sing Se on there.
Its possible any ammount of that is just keeping the focus on the face of things, but too much of the commentary stuf fall around says its Doug.

Yeah, I remember seeing on facebook that he got into the show recently and he seemed to really like it. Was expecting/hoping for a new animated vlog series from him, but as much as I would have liked to see that happen I dunno if the show really warrants an episodic analysis/review like he's done for Avatar or Adventure Time. The reference in show was cool enough honestly.

Todd reviews the currently infamous "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj.
http://blip.tv/todds-pop-song-reviews/anaconda-a-pop-song-review-7073532The Dr. Rockso reference killed me.
I should really listen to more of Nicki's rap rather than her bubbly pop. I mean, I have listen to her rap before, but I've practically drowned myself in "Superbass" and "Starships" in comparison.
-
I can't stand Nicki Minaj in any way or form and just don't see anything good in her songs, be ir rap or bubbly pink pop. But great Todd's back to reviewing actual music, his Madonna movie reviews just… well... aren't that great or interesting.
Also, he once did a 2004 Top Ten list, I'd love to see him do more of these, picking up a random year and going with it.
-
I've been enjoying the Madonna reviews.
-
Same. Although, Todd stated on his Twitter that he's currently working on a One-Hit-Wonderland, but he's having a lot of fun doing it. As much as I didn't mind this review of Anaconda, this year of pop music has just been bleh. Not even 'bad', but boring. If Todd spent the remainder of the year doing Cinemadonnas and OHWs, I'd be just fine with that.
-
Well, you guessed it Robby.
! Whoa! Doug's got a Gravity Falls journal!
Great review. The little kid in me died happy while watching this. I may have been born in the tail end of the 80s, but I still remember being exposed to it and how awesome it was when it petered out. This movie is a 80s boy's DREAM and I most definitely wanna check it out myself. Heck, I think I vaguely remember seeing it on TV a long time ago and coming in on the "Wolfman's got nards" line.

As promised, he started covering the Ghibli films (but only those owned by Disney?) and started with Nausicaa.
Also, Doug and his brother has started Vlogs for Gravity Falls!

Well, that would be… all of them.
Except Ocean Waves I guess which won't ever be distributed locally because its incredibly boring.
There's some other Miyazaki films, and some other Takahata films that predate Ghibli like SOls Prince of the Sun of Castle of Cagliostro, but at that point you're just getting into heavy anime history geekdom, and I just don't think Doug has that in him.
-
Someone make Doug read the manga of Nausicaa pronto
-
Doug's doing the "Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer" cartoon. Oh my god… The movie is just... offensively bad.
-
Well, that would be… all of them.
No it wouldn't.
Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Tale of Princess Kaguya…Disney does not own any of those.Oh wait, never mind, they do technically own at least Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday… They just never did anything with that license for some reason. Still, they never had the license to Grave of the Fireflies. And Poppy Hill and Kaguya were distributed by GKIDS. -
Close enough to all of them as to make no difference. Yes, the brand new stuff they don't have. They signed the contracts like 15 years ago.
And again, they haven't released Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves because they're freaking BORING, and can hurt the entire brand with their complete lack of whimsy or interesting characters or plot. (Similarly, they released Cat Returns BEFORE Whisper of the Heart for similar reasons… though Whisper is actually fun to watch) They subtitled it professionally but never put in the costs to dub it.
-

I dunno. I thought Only Yesterday was pretty good.
Though, yeah, very different from the usual Ghibli fare

I'm talking executive POV, not necesarilly film-goer.
It's NOT what most people expect when they pick up an animated film, and certainly not from the studio that has all the monsters and talking animals.

disney had ponyo and airiety, right?

That was the best thing he's done all year. My head hurts from laughing so hard at the song. Jesus Christ, literally.

Final episode of "Ask that Guy" apparently. Not terribly surprising given he hasn't done any videos with the character (or video game confessions) in a year or more and they've both been off the front page for a while. But still. Uhm… interesting segue to the new site?
Last thing. Looks like Channel Awesome has a new site.
http://channelawesome.com/Bout damn time. Easier to navigate than the old site, and more balanced to all the contributors… but at the same time, still hard to find someone new if you have no idea what you're looking for.
Hrm. And Todd in the Shadows is a featured show, while Nostalgia Chick is just "movies and tv"? Hrm.

I guess because Lindsay almost never updates while Todd has almost become bi-weekly.
