Wow, this all really sucks. I heard the management side of TGWTG was bad, but holy shit that's awful. Like, I'm honestly shocked by some of the things I'm hearing about it.
Wow. Just…wow.

There looks to be a couple years worth of little things adding up at this point that cannever be explained or expressed in one quick essay, prompting them to be ready to leave and it being a decision a long time coming, I can sympathize, I've gone through some similar at my job, which I've been at for a veeery long time.
There's a line between friendships and buisness, and mixing the two is very very hard and usually goes sour in a long run. "I've known these guys for years, and I like them, and want us all to suceed at what we want to do!" is a great mindset. Helping out to be part of the group and help the whole is a thing, but having those favors eventually taken for granted?
For the most successful, hardworking, moneymaking one of the bunch to start paying less and less attention as their work takes up more of their time? (not to diminish other people's efforts, just one person pulls ahead at some point…) Its impossible for the heads to be in touch with everyone one it grows past a certain point.
Also, unless the company is crazy successful all around, "getting paid" is a another thing that eventually leads to problems and helps push you in other directions and needs.
I wonder if Channel Awesome ever had an HR department :ninja:
I don't know if Kyle left due to any negative aspects, but apparently, he's going to clarify things soon with a post.
Somehow, I feel like this thread might devolve into a 'Web Review' thread, because the only TGWTG people we talk about anymore is Doug and Todd.
Whether Todd is leaving or not is a complete question mark. He's had no issue with them. Lindsay left without much animosity towards CA. Lindsay tends to let Todd do his own thing even though they live together. He'll probably stay. If he leaves, it'll probably be after the upcoming Top 10s though.
Hey, if we can start talking about This American Life I'm all for it.
What's really funny is that right now I'm reading The Stand and I'm at the part where the world starts to totally collapse.
No particular reason I'm saying that. It's just funny.

You know, given that King was willing to cheat and rewrite parts of Dark Tower after publication years after the fact to make them work better, it'd be nice if he'd go back and give the Stand a real ending at some point.
But then, he does a lot of terrible endings.

Well, thanks for setting me up for disappointment, I guess.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Well, in other news, Doug kicks off Matrix month
@TLC:
Kyle just left too so there's that…
Whoa what. Where is he going.
EDIT
The ambassadors to Kenya and Slovakia have also defected from Channel Awesome.
Linkara has come out with a statement that he's not going anywhere and has been treated rather well. He's sorry to see people go, but they'll keep working together on future stuff, and that he's not saying anything else on the matter.
And Marzgurl isn't going anywhere. shrugs Does she even make anything anymore?
Well, thanks for setting me up for disappointment, I guess.
Well, the book came out like 35 years ago, and the tv miniseries 20 years ago. Its ending is pretty well known I thought, but if its new to you I won't say anymore.
You reading the original or the uncut version that was released later and is like 400 pages longer?
There have been increasing spontaneous street demonstrations in western Channel Awesome, and several reported topplings of Doug statues as well.

'Sallright. No big deal.
And yeah, I guess, shockingly, I've never been particularly aware of The Stand or how it ends. Didn't even know they made a mini-series until recently.

Uncut

All that's missing is a Baghdad Bob character to give official comments on the events.

The ambassadors to Kenya and Slovakia have also defected from Channel Awesome.
We're waiting on his explanation for leaving, but either way, he's still going to be a part of ChezApocalypse (Lindsay and the gang).
Also, Lindsay will still be producing videos for one more month on TGWTG, but then she's leaving too. (Again, staying with Chez)
Lupa and Phelous are leaving due to negative reasons, but I'm not sure if Lindsay is. She hasn't really said anything in that regard. Kyle, on the other hand, might be.
Lindsey is leaving because she's never been comfortable as The Chick, has got real outside jobs, and she hasn't much made any videos specifically for the site in a long time anyway., and has always had a somewhat spotty update history. (She went most of a year without making updates before, too.) Her leaving and moving on is natural and could be seen coming from like 2 years ago.
Kyle might just be leaving out of solidarity with Lupa and Phelous since I think they're all friends.
So he was just leaving anyway, but happened to time it to other people's drama. Oops.
Well Kyle has a valid point, and with all mayor producers having achieve their goal of an audience, it seems rather normal to follow your own path. Sad to know that Phelous had those problems a the end. In the last years i have move from CA to Best Friends Play (The Hypest). But i will keep checking Chez Apocalypse, that have some great producers there, especially Foldable Human.
If they lose Todd then that pretty much ends any interest in them for me. I've been getting more bored of Doug by the month.
But they have a whole bunch of NEW guys!
That they introduced basically all at once so it was impossible to really sample or try any of them.
Todd's actually listed as a partner and is in the spotlighted column, so he probably gets better treatment? But if his girlfriend leaves then…?
And seriously Paw, you've had one video in the last 6 months. I get you're a new dad and all, and that's obviously time consuming, but come on!
Since some people left, I've been wondering about something; Why is the Snob even on Channel Awesome? He's got his own site, a big fanbase and is doing the net review thing even longer than Doug (I think?)
Not to interrupt your discussion, but I've been curious about that for a while now
and for that matter Linkara or any of the major contributors. Is it out of solidarity for what CA has done for them, friendship or money? Spooney didn't seem to have any problems in that regard and he's still friends with a lot of these guys

Exposure is still exposure. And its a good hub to go to. Just cause you like someone enough to click on their video if you see it on the hub site, doesn't mean you like them enough to follow them to their own website. (I probably won't follow brows held high to another site, for instance. And I don't check on Spoony anymore.) If it isn't hurting anything, and you aren't having a personal disagreement with the guys in charge, why leave? SF debris makes a perfectly legit living at it and has been doing it for years too, and he was only recently added.
The folks all leaving are largely the ones who are either done with it anyway, or were lower string enough that they weren't getting enough revenue from the site anyway and actually NEED to go somewhere else to make more or try to better build their own brand.
[hide]Spoony leaving was because, regardless of what he says, because of the mess with Lupa. He might have meant it that he was planning to leave sooner or later anyway, but he left when he did because of her. Same reason Phalous is leaving now, solidarity with his girlfriend.
(Kyle is apparently coincidental bad timing, but he's not a joke machine and actually is a bit of an ill fit for where the site is leaning.)
As I said before. Lupa obviously has completely legitimate complaints, (and other contributors have backed up that the CEO Mike is a complete ass, Rob Walker has problems, and Doug is too nice to arbitrate or stand up for anyone) but some of the problems must also be coming from Lupa herself.
You don't get randomly fired over not responding to an email for 15 minutes without a lot of bad blood in the air beforehand. (especially when they're not even paying you themselves and your presence doesn't affect anything except providing more material!) That's not a cause, that's a final excuse to rationalize doing something you've been meaning to do anyway. Unless this Mike guy is just the most colossal asshole ever who just loves hurting the site's credibility and creating tabloid gossip on a whim, but Lupa herself explains that she'd been fighting and arguing and resisting with them about stuff for a long time.
(Though I still don't understand why their gameshow thing hasn't gotten up and running by now?)
Apparently everyone was a bit put off by doing the anniversary special for free, and that seems legitimate. (Nevermind that it was great exposure for most of them that would be ignored otherwise. I'd never give filmbrain a chance without those, for instance.)[/hide]
hm, I see, thanks for the quick reply robby, I don't understand all this web review stuff to well, but I guess when the site doesn't hurt your reputation, you might as well go with the extra revenue.
Whoah woah. haven't visited this thread in a while. hit hit the fan. What happened with blistered thumbs a while back? I've kinda lost interest in CA over the past few years. I liked Jesu, Jewario, nostalgia chick and critic. And watched others here and there. People have just moved on, though, and so did I. I watch more video game stuff now. Lots of the Retroware team. Pat the Nes Punk, Black Nerd, etc.
I keep bringing up Mike Dodd here. He wasn't posting material for a while, but he was having some issues. But to fire the man and not even tell him. That was an ass move. I didn't think much of the head ups since then.
Also, Robby, Jewario left CA for Retroware about 6 months/a year, before his death. Maybe he was having troubles with stinkery too? Who knows.
Hey, Paw and Phelous are both coming to ConBravo! this summer. This will be interesting.
What happened with blistered thumbs a while back?
They took it down. Probably because it wasn't getting a lot of hits and it was a pretty poorly designed site to begin with.
Oh, and mismanagement. What else is new?
I think its becoming pretty clear they need to hire someone on the management end that knows what they're doing.
You can get by for a while as an inhouse independant thing among friends… but for it to be sustaiable as a professional thing for years to come...?
Guess who came out with a video? LINDSAY! Crazy, right? She's here with a new Loose Canon episode where she talks about the many iterations of the Greek God, Hades: http://blip.tv/nostalgia-chick/loose-canon-hades-lord-of-the-underworld-7141850
You can also vote for the subject of the next Loose Canon. The vote is between The Wicked Witch of the West, Mystique from X-Men, and Arcee from Transfomers (who is sadly losing horrendously *sad violin music for Lindsay and her Transformer fandom). You can vote here: http://chezapocalypse.com/loose-canon-character-vote-3/
I am so glad she brought up the Hercules cartoon show (along with the movie, of course). I used to watch it before I went to school every day in middle school.
So, in light of all the comings and leavings and Patreon and whatnot….
http://channelawesome.com/stuff-you-like-how-much-money-i-make-in-online-video/
TLDW version: (and this will vary from person to person) they make roughly 1.70$ for every 1000 views, so a million views in three years between youtube and blip will make you a whopping 1,700$.
I have no idea what the numbers are for any given person on the site, and I'm pretty sure Blip changed its payment scheme a while ago, but… yeah. Making a living doing just videos full time seems like not something you can do unless you're getting some serious view numbers... or donations.
Though for at least some comparison, Doug's Matrix video has been on youtube for 3 days, and its at 252,516 views, so from just the youtube audience that should be roughly 430$. And his videos seem to hit the 500,000-600,000 range on youtube pretty regularly, so he's probably making about 800-1000$ per vid on youtube, and if CA gets similar hits...?
Basically, Doug is doing way better than someone at the low end.

So, I'm a you-tuber. I don't make a living off Youtube but I'm getting close. Infact December I made enough to pay all my bills (twice) but that is because of December has crazy high CPM and I did a few really bad but popular Five Nights at Freddy Let's Play animations.
$1.70 is really really low. I don't know if she has a really bad partner company who doesn't supply them with decent ad's or if that is averaging out with Blip's and Blip's ad rev is really really low. I know back in the day when TGWTG first started the CPM for them was 8-14 dollars depending on the ad campagin, month, etc. This is why a lot of people really wanted to jump on Blip, because Youtube at the time had low CPM.
CPM for Youtube varies depending on the month, if you see less content in January its because Jan and Feb are terrible CPM. If you see an increase of content in October to December its because the Christmas rush of adds make ad rev go through the roof.
Right now my CPM is $4.20. On average you can assume for every 100,000 views the youtuber probably made anywhere from 25 to 100 dollars.
To help out, here's are some random days and how much I earned off them, as well as views and subs.
December 20th 2014
306,795 Views
1,893+ Subs
$154.63 (After Google takes its cut, after Fullscreen's 30% is taken out)
December 27th 2014
193,956 Views
889+ Subs
$69.73 (After Google takes its cut, after Fullscreen's 30% is taken out)
Jan 1st 2015
183,851 Views
1,075+ Subs
$54.02 (After Google takes its cut, after Fullscreen's 30% is taken out)
My January view count, ad revenue, and subscriber count has dropped significantly. Partially due to an announced hiatus while I animate a music video, and that vowed to not do anything Five Nights at Freddy's. Main stays are happy, newbies are disappointed.
There's a lot to factor into Youtube views versus Ad rev. If the views are monetized, did the person have ad blocker, did the person watch on the computer or phone. Phone/Gameconsole views give less CPM than computer views. Things like that factor in.
So to answer about Doug's earnings for Blip/Channel Awesome. I'm a causal friend of CR, and by friend I mean we follow each other on DA/Tumblr/Youtube/Twitter and rarely talk outside of that. (I'd personally would love to talk to him more, huge fan boy here) and talked to him occasionally. Also to continue the humble brag, Pushing Up Roses follows me on Twitter and Youtube :3
A couple years back I talked to CR about how things are going for him. And he said that Youtube doesn't do much for him and that he gets ALOT more exposure on TGWTG. Now was just when Doug and the others started using Youtube to bring in new traffic. I could honestly see it changed. Especially since the Youtube giant Maker owns Blip. (Hilariously they bought out Blip because Ray William Jonson signed an contract with Blip after leaving Maker and now Maker owns him again.)
I think Youtube has beaten out Blip. You can tell by the fact that Blip is slowly destroying any armature content on the site. I think they're trying to rebrand it as premium video site to get advertisers to take them seriously. I think the only reason Doug still uses Blip is due to contracts.
Well her math is just sort of useless then, isn't it?
On average you can assume for every 100,000 views the youtuber probably made anywhere from 25 to 100 dollars.
Did I screw my math up really badly then?
I took Doug's 500,000, divided it by 1000, then multiplied by 1.7, and so reached 850, but that would put it at 170$ per 100,000? Rather than 25-100? And that's the low end rate, if it was 4.2 it'd obviously be more?
Or did I just put a decimal in the wrong place?

Last month I had recieved 3 million views total, and got 3,000 dollars from ad rev. Soooooooo….
500,000 views should be around 500 dollars in ad rev, normally and not in Jan.
Iggy Azalea is unspeakably awful and really really minstral showish as hell (also seems to be a pretty awful person irl).
I am also kind of fond of Shake It Off even though it has horrible lyrics <:3
does anyone else think that Lonely island needs to do a song to help represent an underrepresented minority in the music business…. and yes, I'm talking about doing a song about being attracted to small butts
One of the things that's kind of bothering me about this whole mess is that two of CA biggest detractors Asalieri and LordKat are using this as an opportunity to tell everyone "I told you so" and condemn other producers who are staying on the site. The best thing I can think of to do is ignore them, nothing is going to change about them and they'll continue their own petty grudges no matter the outcome.

It will be pretty easy to ignore two people nobody knows or cares about. No seriously who?
I've vaguely heard of LordKat but have no idea what they do, and I have never heard of the other guy.
What they say doesn't mean much.
LordKat is from TGWTG's Ancient Past. He did Until We Win, which was a great series. His Silver Surfer and Battletoads videos still stick out to me. He was never super popular, and he left a while back because he had issues with Spoony. After the Spoony-Lupa fiasco happened, he made a lot of waves with an insane rant about him. However, if I remember right, his parting was amicable, so I don't know why he'd be talking crap now.
No idea about the other guy though.
Like everyone said, LordKat was a former BlisteredThumbs kind of guy. He was often very emotional and would go on huge tirades on stream. Especially during the Spoony fiasco, where in a stream filled with TGWTG members, he said "I hope Spoony kills himself." He left TGWTG without much bitterness.
That said, over the past year, he has become IMMENSELY hateful towards TGWTG because he is pro-Gamergate while majority of TGWTG is pretty much anti-Gamergate. He went on huge screamfests on Twitter, hating on pretty much every producer, whether they spoke of Gamergate or not. He attacked Lindsay, who hadn't spoken much of Gamergate yet and her response was, "What did I do to you?" Like, he's still adamantly pro-Gamergate, even after Gamergate is slowly becoming old news (though people are still being assaulted) and after all the child porn fiascos.
TL;DR: Overly emotional gamer and former TGWTG producer who yells at clouds.
I don't know the other guy.
Lordkat got involved with Gamergate? Eh, can't get much worse than the Magfest incident.
As for Asalieri, he's also big on Gamergate (what is it with douches and that movement… oh) and a "reviewer reviewer" (what).
ah. i had wondered if it was him…...and wholey shit. I'm glad I never followed him or supported him. wow. just..... no freaking words.
Lordkat is like nega-Jontron
Funny you mention Jontron, since he's no stranger to controversy either. (Even better: his "defence" of his actions.)
I actually do not feel the need to self-censor, because I feel like I am a morally just human being.
Stay classy.
Riiiiight. I guess that's what constitutes controversy these days.
Doug strugles with the concept of a In Story Documental in the animatrix review.
The voting process is over and Lindsay's next Loose Canon will be about the Wicked Witch of the West and her many variations.
On one hand, Lindsay is crying in fetal position because she will have to rewatch Oz: The Great and Powerful. On the other hand, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ELPHABA!

Wow what a monster. No seriously is this really the worst dirt you have on this guy because this doesn't even fill a thimble.
Sacrilege, he used the word "retarded!"
….
About something that's retarded!
The only two things I look forward in CA nowadays is Anime Abaddon and Suede.
