Finally found a used copy of the English Color Walk 1 at a Half Price Books. I've been searching for this thing for years. It's in pretty good shape, only the top part of the cover is a bit scuffed but everything else is fine. It says that it originally sold new for 14.99US but they sold it to me used for 25 bucks. I see online that a new copy can go for over 80 to 100 bucks.
Not much official english translated stuff available other than the manga now.

Pretty sad that they only manage to release the manga but hey, I'm fine with importing the Color Walks at some point. I'd much rather have the databooks translated, if anything.
Speaking of which, volume 72 arrived today. Sadly, it's a 4 month wait for 73 and also 74.

Viz has the image for the new One Piece boxset on the twitter and facebook. It looks really cool!
Just in case you haven't seen it yet:

Yes, that does look pretty good. Suits the content of the boxset nicely. Hoping that I can pick it up in the near future.

Got myself volumes 67, 68, 70 and 71! Planning to get 72, 73 and older volumes on my next trip to the U.S!
-
Will the skypiea box set come with extra stuff like the other one?

Nice! I just got the first boxset myself. It'll be my first time reading the arcs it covers.

Yes. Chapter 0 and a double-sided poster will be included.

Had to read this twice, it was so weird seeing "Zoro" in a Viz volume.
-
This post is deleted!
-
That's definitely a mistake since they're still using Zolo in the chapters. Dreams crushed.
-
I'm pretty sure Stephen tries to sneak in "Zoro" whenever he can.
-
there's no reason to sneak in "Zoro", that would be inconsistent and pointless
-
But he does. I'm definitely sure he has admitted to it. There's the example posted. Do you honestly think that is a mistake? You have to consciously type an 'r' and not an 'l'. Then the editors have to go through it. Viz knows the fans want "Zoro" so they do something like this here and there for them.
-
Enough conspiracy theories. It was a slip-up that didn't get caught. End of story.
-
oh man I am looking so dumb
-
Everyone knows zolo silly. 4kids was right all along.
-
Stephen is Illuminati. Confirmed.

So will the box sets always be on sale or only for a limited time?
I'd like to buy them, when I have enough money. Also, I haven't bought a volume for so months, last one I bough was 68, on which volume are they on currently? -

Also, I haven't bought a volume for so months, last one I bough was 68, on which volume are they on currently? The first boxset has been out for almost a year now and it's definitely staying since the second boxset is released in November. There are enough volumes for a third one aswell if they decide to release one next year. I'd also imagine that Viz would want to keep producing them if they sell well enough. To use another example, the FMA-boxset is still available after 3 years.
-
The second box set just came in the mail, along with the imported One Piece postcards from Rightstuf. Surprised and ecstatic that it's here early and now I can finally read through the entire series in one go.
I will post pictures when I get around to it, but it's essentially the exact same as the first box set, only with different volumes/images on the front. It comes with Chapter 0 similar to the Romance Dawn in the first set, as well as a double sided poster with Strong World color pages on each side. The exclusive postcards came in a sealed plastic envelope outside the box within the wrappings. Volumes included are 24-46, all the most recent printings, and none with any dents/damages whatsoever.
All in all, a great deal.

was there another interview with Oda or just the chapter?
-

I just checked and there's no interview/author comments in the Chapter 0 booklet. In place of it in the back is a 30 question quiz, which is mildly difficult - even for a diehard One Piece fan.
So the set includes:
The Box
Volumes 24-46 (twenty-three total)
Chapter 0 Booklet with Bonus Quiz
Double-sided Strong World Posterand if preordered with Rightstuf, imported One Piece postcards.
-
RightStuf confirmed my shipping on the 24th, currently in transit. Anxiously awaiting it to arrive but since international order, it'll be a while :(
-
Is there any way we can get a print copy of chapter 0 outside the box set? It's not right people who have bought the volumes from the beginning get screwed over.

I don't think so. Your best bet is probably going to be Ebay or another site like it.
Mainly though, I can't see it being released as its own separate entity. Maybe it'll be packaged with a future volume, or even Volume 0 (if that ever makes it here).

I agree, without us single volume buyers the boxes don't happen (we're sorry, but due to the single editions having underwhelming sales there's just no way we're going to reprint all the volumes all over again just to throw in a box and not sale there either)
*(btw, good golly Kodansha! The time between the Japanese release of Fairy Tail vol 46 and the US release of Vol 46 will be just over 3 months!)
-
I do envy other manga that get closer release dates. Being 3+ volumes behind ain't no fun.
-
Many Kodansha releases always bothered me because they don't letter the English sfx. They just keep the Japanese ones with a tiny translation of the sfx. As lettering the sfx takes a lot of work, effort and a lot of time, I'll gladly wait than to shorten the gap and leave the Japanese sfx. It's not like it matters for Fairy Tail volumes being very close to the Japanese releases as we already get FT chapter simultaneously on CR. Also, with the English Shonen Jump, it helped making the wait for volumes easier for a number of series. So yeah it doesn't bother me especially with series that have simultaneous releases.
-
It's just speculation, but based on a quote from a SJ podcast saying they have big plans for the One Piece manga in 2015 (in response to a question regarding release schedule), as well as the fact that we've been getting longer and longer gaps between releases (four months!!!! Sep 2nd vol 72, Jan 6th vol 73) I think it will get sped up a bit. Not anything crazy, possibly every two months or so until getting closer (3-6 month difference) to Japansese counterparts.
Mind you this could just be me justifying a scenario where we have faster releases…
-
I actually like a lot of the SFX left the way it is with note translations, especially considering the artist often draws them themselves. If the artist could redraw it in different languages then it would be ideal, though that's not going to happen.
EDIT: Sorry for double post, new post merge didn't work for some reason.

I agree with the SFX-part. I feel like things should be left as untouched as possible but I also think the japanese SFX simply look way better.
As for the release schedule, I remember something being mentioned in a podcast aswell…I might've been the one asking the question, actually. The answer basically went: "if we do fall behind too much, you could expect that to change next year".
Volume 75 was recently announced to be released in August. That's a slightly smaller gap this time, I guess that's a start.
-
It'd be cheaper to leave the SFX alone as well, I prefer the original SFX with the little subtitles next to them like Viz has been doing with ESJ.
I imagine that if they were to stop editing the SFX, it would only take affect with newer properties to avoid inconsistencies. -
It would feel way too inconsistent to stop translating the sfx after releasing 70+ volumes. I'd rather everything be translated and wait a little longer. They do a great job, freakin love viz. A way to release volumes faster would be to have a number of people working on the editing of the sfx instead of just one.
-
Actually, I mistakenly said Kodansha writes little translations of the SFX. I probably was thinking of VIZ's ESJ version. Sometimes with Kodansha the size of the SFX translation is almost as big as the Japanese ones. So that's double the amount of SFX text written on panels which is kind of a problem as more of the panel is going to be covered. They try their best when placing the translation so it covers the least amount of panel space, but it doesn't look as good as VIZ's ESJ version IMO. Still, I prefer having the SFX lettered in English, which makes me disappointed that they're not doing this with Jojo part 1.

To get the digital version out quicker they do the quick little subtitled SFX, in the print copies they generally letter the SFX in English, at least that's how it was with the Nisekoi volumes.

It would indeed be inconsistent and that's why it won't happen. Just like the spelling of certain names.
I'm not sure if the SFX-work is slowing down the releases in this case though. Maybe they're just playing safe to not catch up for some odd reason. As for Jojo, they could be changing things for the physical release. Though I do think the SFXs in Jojo are more important to keep than in other series.

I wouldn't mind them leaving the sound effects untranslated in any future special edition release of the series.
Really hoping for a special edition of OP eventually. I'm finding that my older volumes are all starting to turn yellow. My room gets a lot of sunlight so it's unavoidable. I try to ignore it, but it's not easy XD
I find that the Viz Signature volumes and Vizbig volumes don't turn yellow. Must use higher quality acid free paper. It seems at least that the newer volumes yellow slower than the older volumes. May be wrong about this, but it's possible the paper is a little higher quality.
For me, the ideal special edition wouldn't be big 3-in-1's like Vizbig, but something more like Monster's special edition or the Viz sig format used for 20th Century Boys and Pluto. Just put color back in, make his name Zoro and it would be perfect. Could do 2-in-1 volumes like Monster or the Neon Genesis volumes I've seen at B&N.
Someone put a word in with Viz for me please XD

Also get rid of the early pirate banter.. I'd also like the full color versions of One Piece but that seems even more unlikely.
-
Now, that kind of edition would be fantastic but it's not gonna happen anytime soon.
-
If a lot of people would email VIZ for a re-translation of the series (especially the earlier volumes), it might happen. I remember emailing them about it a few times before. It's a very long shot, but who knows. It would definitely be great to have it in the VIZ Signature edition.
-
It's not happening until One Piece ends, so like 10-15 years at the minimum. If you want it, continue to buy and support One Piece to show that it doing so would be profitable.
Also, is there any update on the Yu-Gi-Oh! omnibus editions?
-
@Wes:

I think a full color edition would be more likely and tempting since it actually offers something more substantially different than just a few corrections. But it might take a while and there might not be enough demand for it, just like any second version of a manga.
Personally, I have most One Piece volumes, but if Viz released the Full Color edition in a corrected omnibus edition of two original volumes or three per volume with all the cover art presented inside, I would buy it.
-
Comparison between Romance Dawn (Has Oda interview so its thicker) and Strong World (Has mini-Quiz after Ch.0) Booklets.
-
I just love this latest chapter message from Oda: "No matter how great the series, it doesn't get the cover for the final chapter. Gotta love Jump for sticking to it's guns."
Precisely the opposite of what happened for Viz's volume 50.
-
If ESJ included AssClass, would Koro-sensei still have been on the cover?
Probably not.
-
Don't know what's the best thread for this, but I've been wondering about how the official people at Shueisha/Viz convert print manga to digital manga. Is it exactly the same as how scanlators do it, or are there special advantages the official distributors have?
And I've also heard that there is a certain difference between Scans and Print releases, no matter how much it's been cleaned/touched up. (I sorta agree, because with print it's easier to notice the small details, stuff like the changing thickness in inked lines) But is there the same 'problem' with the Digital Manga? On the Kindle as well?
-
The official release uses the same digital data they use to print the actual WSJ magazine. The scanlators use the crappy printed version and apply a bazillion filters that flatten out all of the details and screentones.
