What Happened?

Albert Barnes was an art collector who amassed a lot of great art, including many famous impressionist pieces. After he died, his will established the Barnes Foundation in his mansion in suburban eastern Pennsylvania as an educational facility to be maintained after his death and the art displayed there was curated in a very specific way in accordance with his wishes. This included a large mural painted by Matisse over the Foyer wall around the windows. Politicians in Philadelphia coveted the collection for its tourism potential, though, and legally bullied the foundation into submission so that it could no longer remain open and that the art could be transferred to the city.

I can't remember the specifics, but they were sleazy enough that a documentary about the entire thing, Titled The Art of the Steal, was made to bring light to it.

Saw the Bill Cosby thing earlier and couldn't respond.

I think when it's a situation of possible crime going unpunished because of the individual being a public figure … that's the sort of thing people should know about. Rape is a serious issue in this society as it is and kicking it under the rug is exactly the opposite we should do, particularly in respect of people who do go through that difficulty in life and are only told to keep quiet about it.

So he's popular and likable and the internet is ruining him? Who gives? There are allegations that he committed crimes several times and went unpunished. Even if the claims turn out to be false the idea of dismissing conversation about rape and treating it like something we don't need to hear about sounds pretty awful to me overall.
I do agree celebrity scandal is usually asinine, but that's because it's mostly stupid people doing stupid stuff to themselves and their lavish lifestyle. But here we're talking about a serious crime that possibly happened. What's wrong with being informed about this and keeping people's attention to the fact that, hey, he may have raped several women and that is wrong.

Also, why is Ellen being gay considered to be of the same sort of "stupid, illegal shit" as the stupidities of Miley Cyrus and Charlie Sheen? I don't particularly get that part either.

Most of the discussion I'm seeing is about whether or not celebrities can be idiots (vis a vis Cosby starting the meme thing, not the crimes he's been alleged of), and that undermines the rape discussion that I'm sure took place at the times he was accused.

If the man disgusts you, then don't contribute to his latest spike in popularity. This isn't the kind of controversy that will destroy Cosby's career. If the rape charges didn't, memes about them won't. Instead, a bunch of people are being reminded that he exists and probably looking up clips to refresh their memories of who this guy is.

Yeah it's a wonder someone hasn't gone on his wikipedia page and prematurely reported on him being dead….unless someone already did and I was out of the loop when it happened. Cosby should've stuck to doing with old people normally do complain about the younger generation and their taste music instead of giving kids matches to play with.

This is actually a pretty cool event. I'm kind of marveling at what must have been involved in making this happen. It's by far the most precise landing we've accomplished, considering the size, speed and non-uniformity of the comet. Not that we have a large sample size, but getting on a comet is a lot different from getting on a roughly spherical planet with an orbit that we've understood long before we knew we could even touch space.

My issue is more with the fact that when Prismeru tried to inform people of the origin of the story it got shot down as another case of a celebrity doing stupid shit with their personal time, which dismisses the issue of rape and possible impunity as a matter of frivolity or stupidity, which it's not.

Like I said, it's offensive to people who have suffered this and told to be quiet for the news of someone famous possibly having committed rape as something irrelevant to keep quiet about. Why? Just because otherwise the internet will ruin Cosby for us?

No one is saying he shouldn't be punished if he did it. No way is saying its okay to late rape slide.

I'm just saying it isn't news as the allegations and lawsuits came up TEN YEARS ago. MEMES about it certainly aren't news, and no, we don't need to hear about it, anymore than we hear about the millions of other court cases involving car accidents, murder, or sexual assault that DON'T get publicized.

Because when she came out, all the way back in 1997, it was "big news" for months. Even though it's not a big deal. And thus, stupid to have endless news about it. It went on long enough that I still remember it being overplayed almost 18 years later.

Also, the super heavily publicized O.J. trial. That got endless media coverage for a solid year, but none of the other millions of more important court cases? not what the senate or supreme court was doing that year?

But hey, let the trend continue with Tiger Woods or Chris Brown beating women, or Snookie being Snookie, or the Duck Dynasty guys saying a racist sentence, or R. Kelley pissing on little girls, or famous musixian X did drugs in the 70's, one of the Olsen Twins is in rehab, and whoever else. People apparently think they're all worth talking about.

But we DON'T need to know about that shit. The police and the courts do if its an actual criminal thing. There's no reason for us to point at it and have it displayed like a freak show in front of us with constant news coverage, where we're interested JUST because they're famous.

I think the main issue isn't whether this meme stuff is worth anything, and I mean the internet itself is basically a giant amateur media circus. But that's not a reason to dismiss issues as worthy of discussion. I personally do see it as quite extreme, and flat-out wrong, to say "nobody should ever bring up anything bad a celebrity has ever done!" Which is what Robby kind of said. Now he is backpedaling a bit and slipping in conditions about "oh but memes" and "oh but if it was a long time ago." But hell, even if it was ages ago, that does not make it something people shouldn't discuss if it feels relevant (for example if someone is idolizing a person who probably did fucked up shit).

Every rape case is significant and people should be aware about rapists (this seems like common sense?). But of course you can't go publicize every case about every person out there who nobody knows. Celebrities are in the public spotlight, and all conversations about them deserving space and privacy and being allowed to do dumb shit aside, if they do something like commit rape it's legitimate news. The public DOES have a relationship with public figures, even if the extent is indirectly funding them by supporting their work. But it's still important. For example it's COMPLETELY valid to bring up that Orson Scott Card is a huge bigot who funds anti-gay causes, when his book gets turned into a movie. Because by going to see that movie, you are supporting an awful person.

And you can try to bend the argument a million ways about there being more worthy news or things being over-covered or over-publicized. None of it changes the fact that these types of issues are NOT things that should be automatically ignored and pretend they never happened.

Ok, last post about this (Not because i consider my opinion supreme truth but because otherwise i will lose my cool and will get banned).

The thing with cases like this (The Cosby Allegation isn't like Snooki, Britney Spears and all that tabloid shit but with horrible crimes like Allen And Polanski) is that it ends in acquittal by forgetfulness most of the times. Yes, maybe the case was settled out of court or maybe the fuckin pedophile fled America but we have to know it happened. We aren't demonizing Cosby but raising awareness toward serious problems. Evenmore if there are more than then accusations in the period of ten years. I'm not pro-lynchig but do feel like prosecuting a crime until it is judged (and if the perpetrator has to go to jail to be readapated so be it).

I'm not telling you "Let's point at Cosby!" but rather "This is a huge problem Celebrity status of power/ impering rape in various level of our society and we must be aware of it whether its an actor or a person". Of course there are people doing a media circus out of it but there are media that takes this seriously and with well thought pieces. You have to check that. If you only read the Enquirer of course it's gonna seem like a campaign towards demonizing and baiting people. If you feel the media you are reading uses the article in this way…well, stop reading shit media.

In short, a lot of actors and/or artists have taken advantage of acquittal by forgetfulness. We can't really let them do that. Wether it is Bill Cosby or Woody Allen.

But like the example I cited above, there are times where yes, the public should be aware because it should inform their decisions to support these people. And something as serious as rape probably shouldn't just be forgotten if the celebrity in question is still active (though it does not mean we need daily reminders).

-people doing bad things is bad, and they should be punished for it regardless of who they are
-celebrity news is often vapid and pointless
-making random jokes out of the blue about things that happened a decade ago is weird
-a creatives' legacy shouldn't necessarily be judged after the fact by what they may have done in life

And a special personal note for this particular instance
-beloved childhood icon turns out to be creep, Robby prefers to remain blissfully unaware in this particular case, the same way he never wants to hear anything bad about Dick Van Dyke, Steve Irwin, or Jackie Chan.

Thus confusion and disagreement.

Just wanted to point out that it's not like the memes happened out of nowhere ten years after the rape allegations.

They have actually been brought up numerous times all year by different people, so there is a context for current memes wanting to keep the issue vocal. It's not just a random case of latching on ten-year old news.
