I'm already happy than we could be getting a close to 50-character roster when I remember making one that size when the game was announced and calling it unrealistic.
If you think about the fact that in Brawl, SSE took up an ENTIRE layer of the dual-layer game disc, it's totally plausible that without a story mode with all the custcenes and such, the roster could more than double. My hopes are high.
I'm gonna stick with my trend line and forecast 52 or so playable characters. Yeah math!

But like Ghirahim they're one-off characters and if Ghirahim shouldn't be included as a playable character due to appearing in only one game shouldn't that apply to the Ice Climber and Ness?
Those most recently leaks feel really really fake. Think about there's no Mii's in the list. Also, why would they make Dr Mario playable again? When he could just be an alt of Mario.

I've read the reasons but none of them seems convincing enough to me. Most of the "proofs" are based on opinion (it's fake because the character's name is nonsensical or the roster is not ordered by series), on the E3 demo (which is subject to change) or can be explained by the pictures low quality. The leak, in other hand, has a ton of things going for it, like the quality of the characters artwork and models, an incredible attention to detail (like the glitch in the CSS) and the Tomodachi Stage.
It reminds me of the Pokemon XY leak, which had the same amount of controversy. We had pages and pages of people arguing that the leak was fake because it was disappointing (and I admit I was one of them) and "clearly photoshopped". Here we are today, Greninja is not only real but it's now a character in Smash Bros.
Not only does it not take months of work to make them look "this good", I believe one of the three leakers (the third one) has already admitted that his leaks are bogus, and that was the one with the Shulk red team render
edit: was the DLC list it seems but the third list still is the shadiest of them all, and they all seem to be linked
Yesterday, I stumbled on a supposed text leak send to smashboards before E3 but not revealed till this leak (can't find it again), matching with the pictures and which mentionned things like Bowser Jr fighting in a Koopa Clown Mecha/Car and having the koopalings as costumes (to me, it seems a lot of work for costumes but anyway…)

I don't believe the leak. Main reason being that we know Sakurai games of the recent past for all having one thing in common: Great looking menu screens. These screens? These are just pictures slapped onto a black screen. Especially that stage select screen. Blegh.

Pic of the day. The 3DS version has an excellent Sounds collection! The design looks nice for a sound test screen, doesn't it? The font color for the "Remix" text on remixed songs comes in pink or white. The pink ones are songs arranged for this version of Super Smash Bros., while the white ones are remixes made in earlier Smash Bros. games. This means there are reoccuring songs from past releases.
Choose your songs and play with features on the bottom screen. You can listen to character voices, too. One of the new highlights for this feature is the "Play in Sleep Mode" option in the upper right. If you turn this on, you can listen to the tracks with your headphones even when your Nintendo 3DS is closed. The L and R Buttons will let you skip tracks. This means you can use it as a portable music player. Enjoy listening to the tracks you love by putting all songs in loop, shuffle, or selecting your favorite tracks!!
In Smash Run, the background music plays randomly from the songs you select from the track list. This means you can customize your own song lineup!! Usually each stage has two tracks-which makes for a lot of songs on its own-but as a bonus, we've added more songs for you to enjoy in Smash Run and in the Sounds area.

Can anyone can confirm this? I usually jump to Miiverse each morning, considering it contains Sakurai's explanation, possibly other images relating to the post. For the longest time, the Smash Bros site dropped the redirect link to Miiverse, which….was inconvenient.
I want to say the newcomers are usually around for weeks, but I'm not sure when they come down. Last few months I gone directly to miiverse and skipped the site so I can't be sure.
Only one week is a really short time compared to the others though so it seems possible.

Back in the past year there was a thread on Smashboards trying to follow patterns such as this one, and there were many cases of a character banner disappearing causing many people to go nuts over a reveal soon. As someone who also tried to find hints and stuff for the sake of hype, I remember clearly this rule not actually existing.
Not only was it inconsistent how long it took after a banner went down for a character to emerge, there were also cases of the character banners still being there right until the reveal of a completely different character. From the top of my head I feel like Ike's banner was there up until E3, and there was also the situation of Diddy Kong appearing while Little Mac's was still up, the banner remaining up for Zelda right after Rosalina, and then for King Dedede right after Zelda.
From looking it up apparently the same was for Sonic.
So nope, the banner means nothing. As for the case of newcomers, usually we get much more concrete evidence that one is happening anyway, namely Sakurai telling us to look out for something.

I had a dream that I got to playtest Smash and learned the roster. It was very hard not to reveal the roster to you guys.
