With the upcoming 3D2Y special, World Trigger and the new Dragon Ball Z film, I'm expecting a significant drop in quality for the second half of this arc.
A Study of One Piece Animation
-
-
Which is a shame because it's the most pivotal point of the entire arc. "sigh" typical.
-
And we got off to such a great start too. Damn.
Who knows, maybe they'll surprise everyone and the second half will look better than the first!
-
It's too early to jump to conclusions.
BTW, where the hell is the new One Piece movie?
-

I always assumed the next movie wouldn't come out until December 2015, since Strong World and Z were released in December '09 and 2012 respectively.

Oh, shit. I just noticed it took 3 years for Film Z. I thought 2 years. Argh…
-
I wonder when Toei will even announce the next movie. Are there any conventions or anything happening in Japan anytime soon that might warrant the wait? Or maybe they will announce it in V Jump like they did DBZ.
To be honest, the waiting is one of the things which will really make this movie special. When One Piece films released yearly, it felt less like an event and just another piece of media to absorb, and the fact they were rarely good didn't help matters much. Now that we wait for these films, I feel like I'm really waiting for an event to start.

In December there will be JUMP Festa. That sounds like the best time to announce the next film, since Nagamine Tatsuya will likely be free by then.

Uh… there was another movie between those two... I mean, yeah, the 3D-movie was not particularly memorable and was only 30 minutes long, but it's still officially movie 11.

You may notice i never mentioned movie numbers.
That was double billed with a Toriko movie and didn't use the regular animation. It's pretty safe to disregard it from what seems to be the "new movie every three years" schedule now, as it was just a rushed extra done to advertise Toriko and had no other reason to exist (even the promotion was minimal). -
There are some hints of somethings worthwhile in that preview, but it can go either way. Some of Takagi's post-timeskip episodes have been pleasant surprises.
I'm still salty though over Takara being wasted this week.
-
Oh wow, Kōdai WATANABE is the Animation Director for the One Piece 3D2Y special!!! and Naoyuki Itou is the director.

I remember commenting a while ago that it would be sick if he animated for One Piece - that's great news.

I knew you this will please you.
-
Hope they not using the same animation, only the 2 seconds in the end is NEW!
-
Considering how much of the special will wind up being new scenes and how many projects Toei Animation currently has in the pipeline it won't kill the special to reuse cuts from the television series.
-

They've said it's entirely new footage already. This short promo isn't using many new scenes because it's too early - they probably don't have too much to show at this point, 40+ days before the broadcast.
Episode of Merry wasn't done pretty much until the day it aired (and they still had to fix so many things for the dvds). That's how tv anime in general works, schedule is frantic. -

its probably will be good. -

Yeah, i just checked, and "Merry" aired in August 24th, but the first actual 15-second teaser came out in July 20th, roughly one month before the air date. Until the next week we'll probably have a better preview out.

It sucks that Kitazaki, Shingaki, and Shimanuki aren't good. -

Why do they keep spamming the same AD's?
It sucks that Kitazaki, Shingaki, and Shimanuki aren't good.Either nobody else wants to work on One Piece as an animation supervisor or nobody else has the time to work on One Piece as an animation supervisor.
-
Is Kureta Kohei new director?
-
According to ANN he did some storyboarding and was an assistant director for Z, but yeah, this will be his first work on the TV show.
I guess it's official now that Kitazaki's replaced Yamashita.
-
Kureta Kouhei succeeded Nagamine Tatsuya as the series director of Saint Seiya Omega for the last two cours. It seems he's returned from any resting period after that series' end.
-

Do you think the new special has anything to do with it? The best AD's we've got have been MIA.
We've been seeing a repeat of the same directors for the past few months.
-

The storyboard of Episode 596 was done by him. To tell the truth, Ep. 596's storyboard is just awful.
Now that this time he takes charge of both storyboard and episode directing, maybe he would replace Komagi.
BTW, he and Komagi are both Yukio Kaizawa's students.

-
Who told you that Kitazaki is not good?
I didn't mean that he was bad. I just think that his episodes simply haven't been that special.
By good I mean something that is akin to a special AD.
-

The special might have something to do with it. Talented animators tend to like to work on projects with higher budgets and better schedules so that they can create better work.
-
I'm hoping that based on the current pacing that they cover the entire flashback in episode 660 instead of splitting it between 2 episodes because i'd rather have Endo direct the whole thing instead of splitting it with Ueda. Episode 660's title probably can confirm that and episode 659 will just be the buildup to said flashback.
-
In two weeks, I wil have 100 settei from Dressrosa Arc!!!
-
I guess it's official now that Kitazaki's replaced Yamashita.
I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but someone on twitter mentioned that Yamashita did KA for the most recent episode
-
Yeah yamashita worked on this weeks episode.
But does any one know who did this weeks amazing animation cut

Dat zoom in on doffy's big grin.
-
Hmm, at first I though it was Takara, but I really don't know…
-
Am going to guess out my ass and say it kind looks like satoshi horsawa.
-
Horisawa did not contribute to One Piece Episode #656.
-
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it was Noriko Ozeki since I recognize her name from one of XMURADX's old videos (but not the piece of hers he was showcasing, though).

What does "2nd Key Animators" mean?
-
What does "2nd Key Animators" mean?
When the key animator has to create his work on the quick a second key animator is assigned to clean-up his drawings or draw an few extra key animation drawings. The role is basically a step between key animation and in-between animation.
-
Hard to say, there are 3 new animators on the ep, but my guess it's Takeshi Nishino, I've been keeping an eye on him for a while now, and I'm starting to think that the works we thought it's Takara might be his. Because, I found it weird that Takara doesn't deliver consistently good scenes.
Takeshi Nishino works, my guess:
#594 = Most of the ep was good, he could have done anything. Sometimes Ishizuka's consistency can make spotting animators a nightmare.
#627 = http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/2693/animated-mamiko_nakanishi-one_piece-presumed
#637 = http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/6638/animated-effects-fighting-one_piece-takara_isamu
#650 = http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/6627/animated-artist_unknown-effects-fire-lightning-one
#656 = http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/7966/animated-artist_unknown-background_animation-effec
Try,comparing the background smoke style, very similar in #656 and #637.
What made me doubt Takara, is that he worked on #654, and #644, and some other episodes, and I haven't seen similar dynamic scenes, even the dialogue scenes.
I will try asking Nishino, but I don't expect an answer from him.
So, you guys see any similarity or am I looking too much into this? Only way we would know is to wait for their next works.

#637 & #656
- they deliver the similar tense so i can say both of them have similarity in term of timing
- effects in both scenes are rough and share other similarities. However, they are not 100% like each other mostly because difference in term of moving and speed
- Both scenes have dense shading
Also, I cant notice any similarities between #650 scene and both scenes in#637 and #656
==
Edit: after rewatching the lighting scene in #637, I finally noticed that the style of drawing the blue fire look close the effects in #637 scene -
Also, I cant notice any similarities between #650 scene and both scenes in#637 and #656
the shinyness on Law and Barto's faces is kind of similar
