I can't believe this many countries are still taking eurovision seriously.
Eurovision 2014: Return of the Eurovision
-
-
The Greeks are certainly getting into the spirit of things this year - this video is probably more of a plea to Eurovision fans than a tribute to the contest itself, but hey, it's fun hearing mashups of previous Eurovision winners.

Woodt woot first time ever attending this show live! Ukraine and russia in quick sucession. Lets see how this goes

You're actually in Copenhagen?
-
Born and raised, but yeah, I attended. Portugal not passing is the fucking greatest injusticre.

Woo…impressed noise
It's hard to get tickets for any of the finals, even if not the Final itself. Even a Eurovision die-hard friend of mine who flew in from Dubai only managed to attend a rehearsal. As for what I feel...
Russia got booed for qualifying, and I can't say I'm surprised. With the trouble they've instigated in Ukraine and the region, they've managed to push politics into Eurovision in a more overt way than usual. A shame the twins are caught up in this because their little song and see-saw act was quite good, but yeah, not a surprise.
San Marino getting through at last made me smile even if the song wasn't amazing. It was still one of the better ballads of the night.
Iceland I liked and was genuinely surprised that they got through as similar acts I've been fond of haven't in the past. They're just a lot of fun, and the live song was way better than the recording.
Armenia were the opposite. The studio version earned Aram Mp3 a lot of hype which I don't think is matched in the stage show, where he basically stands still the whole time. I dunno. It's okay but I don't think this should be the favourite.
Sweden are a more-deserved favourite but Undo seems to be missing something to make it a winner for me. It's like two-thirds of a song, with a third repeated under the hope no-one would notice. It's certainly pretty and the light prism was one of the night's more effective displays, so I'm not going to argue it deserving a place in the final.
Ukraine have this weird ability to take a mediocre song and make it…well, if not great than at least much better. But then I think last year's Gravity deserved to win more than Only Teardrops so yeah. This again was a professional song with clever choreography that felt just a little repetitive to be great. Such a tricky ticky clock.
The Netherlands had perhaps the most professional sounding song of the night? It made me think more Appalachians than Amsterdam, but it was a very solid tranquil country number. Won't win, of course, but it's still beautiful.
Montenegro seems to have baffled a lot of my UK compatriots in terms of its qualification but it was not a bad song at all, even if the guy didn't move and looked like Stannis Baratheon in a suit. Balkan ballads are a tradition at Eurovision now and given most of the Balkans have taken a time out this year, it fulfilled the role admirably. Also a first time qualifying!
Azerbaijan on the other hand annoys me. Their song had beauty, it had visuals, it had a sweeping orchestra, and it had no melody. Duller than dishwater. But I'm reminded that I saw Azerbaijan in the top 10 bookies' list back in March…before they'd even chosen their entry. So I wonder.
Hungary is…I don't know. I thought I really liked it at first but it doesn't hold up as strongly when I think back to it. I just struggle to say much about it.
As for the non-qualifiers...yeah, it saddens me that Portugal didn't make it because their song was so different, like a beach carnival. The singer did seem massively stressed while singing it though, and it didn't come across as confidently as the diamond-tattooed drummers and colourful staging suggested. Still a shame. Meanwhile a lot of UK folk are disappointed in the lack of Latvia but while I agree Cake to Bake was really sweet and smiley and kinda cute, it wasn't exactly sung very well. Still should have done better than Azerbaijan mind >_>
-
HOLLAND!!! Finally
-
I'm surprised you guys are such big fans of Portugal. I thought the singer was kind of rubbish in the video, and slightly better in the live performance. That drummer though …
-
Belgium didn't make it :( and I had such high hopes…
I thought most of the songs were pretty boring, but the Netherlands' song I really liked. Like something I would listen to voluntarily :p.
The booing when they called Russia was to be expected, but still interesting. And Portugal, nah, their song was really bland imo.

Finals voting prediction: Ukraine will give no points to Russia, Russia will give 10 or 12 points to Ukraine.
-
It's funny how the Dutch submission is so popular abroad. It has been heavily criticized here ever since it was first performed. Ilse DeLange (the female half of the duo) has done much better songs.
-
GUYS I AM UNREASONABLY EXCITED.
Hoping that Conchita Wurst will win now, but we'll see.
-
Is Conchita trans or drag? Our media just can't get it right for the life of it and I'm left awfully confused. v_v

Even the trans community can't seem to decide. Conchita herself has described it as 'drag', although it's clear she doesn't mean the glittery, jokey, camp version that most people think of with 'drag'. I sort of get the impression it's what US folk would consider 'genderqueer' but I shouldn't push definitions on her.
Really she's doing a lot to advance the cause of not putting people in boxes.

UK will not win. Cause politics.
Austria's entry. Ah. I'm in love. Ahhh <3 I don't know if she'll win but ONE CAN DREAM
France however… I get the feel they might win cause yoo bruh everybody loves moustaches.
Russia, due to happenings, ain't gonna have much luck.
Ukraine, due to happenings, might have more luck, though they apparently threw in a guy in a hamster wheel for good measure. -
This year I basically don't know any song beforehand, expect for Austria's. I don't even kow what our German entry sounds like lol
However I too hope Conchita will win, or at least make it to the Top 5. -
Oh, our annual European festival of "who is most ashamed of his country" starts again and Germany once again disregards a creative entry for tired stuff nobody really likes.
At least I have beer for this evening…
-
Go Conchita!
Extra points if she tears her dress apart midway through the song.
!
-
Ah, Germany. Was soll das? It's just so dull. Bring back Roger Cicero.

We did really well a few years back with Jade Ewen in 2009. I think part of it is how the BBC has a tendency to overstate our chances each year so that when our 'sure-fire winner' comes mid-table, we view it as a failure or insult. We don't get the voting blocs that the Balkans or Eastern Bloc or Scandinavia do but then neither do Germany who won in 2010.
But then I'm a bit trigger-happy on this issue, because people will say it as a way of backing up the idea that the UK should cut ties with Europe…

Go Conchita!
With the Eurovision community confidently siding with Armenia, and then Sweden, as their favourites, I do wonder if they'll be left reeling by an Austrian victory tonight.

Bucks Fizz magicking extra clothes onto themselves was the best Eurovision moment ever.

More like "Germany, was soll das! Bring back Stefan Raab to handle things!"
Without him and the massive PR campaign Lena would have never won the ESC.
That said….

…Conchita seems to have the media on her side, so there is hope.
And while I admit that I want her to win just to piss off certain people, her song isn't that bad. At least her voice is really nice!
You mean like this?
Zachri understands me.

See, I just think 'TV TOTAL' when I see him now.

In case any Americans want to watch along...
-
Zachri understands me.
Of course I do - twas the last decent entry we had.
We always go cheesy and it seems that was the only time is fit nicely.
Back when we had 'friends' [/sob] -
Haha, Iceland’s song was hilarious. I like it xD
Norway's song was really great as well. -

why does colony hate us?? :
-
Go Moustache ! Our song is stupid but I'm hoping for an unexpected Top 5…
-
You go Conchita!
She was amazing. An now I hear Germany's song or the first time. I quite like it. Defiitely better than last year's entry.
-
Ours was pretty okay, actually, and surprisingly so. The singer's higher notes should have been considerably lower with his voice, but overall the song was really energetic. It's just a shame that that kind of music doesn't really do all that well in the all-European pop ballad contest.
Conchita was okay, but the song was the most generic ballad I've heard all night. Spain's the best I've seen thus far, I think. Similar to Sweden's song, but executed much better. Felt more genuine.
-
My money's on cheesecake.
-
Spain's the best I've seen thus far, I think.
The first 40 seconds were beautiful. Then she started to sing in English for whatever reason. Urgh.
Gonna check if there is an all-Spanish version out there.
-
Yeah, I left the room after the first 30 seconds so I think I missed the awful part. Oh well, Switzerland and Hungary more than made up for it. Switzerland especially, that whistling is just irresistible.
-
My favourite is No prejudice by Iceland, a cheerful fun song I enjoy.
-
Rainbow band of gay men? Hell yeah, I voted for Iceland too.
I so didn't catch that HUngarys entry was about incest the first time around. Great song too.
Sorry San Marino, Austria has the better James Bond theme.
LOL Poland.

I'm surprised you guys are such big fans of Portugal. I thought the singer was kind of rubbish in the video, and slightly better in the live performance. That drummer though …
All I know is that when Portugal was on, it was a massive party in the hall; everybody standing up and singing along. When the semifinal was done, you could hear everyone going "good show, but WTF Portugal didn't pass?!"
Azarbaijan and the Netherlands on the other hand, the mood just died. Why they jumped to near-favourite status is beyond me.
By the way, what do you guys think of the danish hosts?
-
The English of the guy with the occasional Chinese phrase annoys me, but I gotta say they're all doing a much better job of their hosting duty than anyone else in the recent years. The ordering food for the contestants thing was a nice gesture of hospitality.
-
The Chinese phrase dude reminds me a bit of Dawson Creek. Don't ask why.
-
I only just tuned in, so i'm hoping that my country (Denmark) win.
-
Yeah, Pilous accent is definetly the most noticeable of the three. But for the most part, I think the humor comes through (at least from a danish perspective); 14 years ago the hosts tried doing the whole thing in rhyme, and were an absolute black hole of charisma. I believe the male host got nickmaned "Dr Death" by Terry Wogan.
I thought the commentator-joke was pretty good.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Lol. Here comes the boos.
-
Haha, oh the booing. It's a shame, really, Russia's song wasn't bad.
-
I thought it was very decidedly…unremarkable.
Ukraines song was at least catchy, despite having the worst line in all of the show.
"My heart is like a clock, you wind it with your love!"Not even the cheesecake song can match that.
-
"Hi, this is Moscow, Russia calling"
"BOOOOOOO!!" -
Hahaha, when Russia got 12 points at the start, the danish commentator went "Don't worry, Russia wont win"
-
I'd rather see Russia take it than Sweden, in all honesty. That garbage deserves nothing. Such a bad ABBA ripoff with a terrible voice.
-
So i guess that Basim wasn't that popular as i hoped.
-
Has a 0 score ever occured before ? Because our Moustache is on its way to make it happen
-
I'm trembling right now, this is so exciting.
Go Conchitaaaaa! -

…I think my ABBA is very different from yours. I personally like the song, I just don't want Sweden to win again so soon for the sake of variety. All of northern Europe has nabbed wins within the last decade, except poor, poor Iceland.
WHOO ALCAZAR! Melodifestivalen is great.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
So i guess that Basim wasn't that popular as i hoped.
He should've gone with the needlesly explicit version of the song
-
Think later times ABBA with the more melodramatic pop ballads instead of the energetic and lively everyman's pop song. It's just the same thing they've sent there for the past twenty years, and I personally just cannot stand that genre of music unless the lyrics are especially touching. It's being glamorous purely for glamour's sake, and it disgusts me. And I really hated how she sang the chorus, her voice made my head hurt. e_e
But yeah, I'm rooting for Austria, Netherlands, Hungary, and Switzerland. As moody as the Dutch song was, I thought it was pretty. I could well imagine listening to something like that on some quiet, rainy night when I just wanted to relax.
-
I thought France would be doing MUCH better so I'm surprised to see we're beating them…
Also GO CONCHITA~ <3
