I recently watched a movie, where a character named Dadan appeared.
Not much else in common with OP-Dadan, because he`s male, but also a reckless one, who cares for his family and could be titled a bandit :)
Black cat, white cat
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118843/
Ace has always reminded me about Tank Girl (the picture's are bad but Tank Girl's smilie neck lace looks basically the same as the smiling one in Ace's hat and she also has a knife)
@O:
this chapter
gnome with bug butt = jiminy cricket
usop liar with long nose = pinochio
SAD = candy that turn kids into donkeys
Doflaming / pupeter making animated toys = old gepeto
Dressdossa = italy / land of toys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Toys)beware of the donkey zoan
stromboli bird cage indeed!!!!
the references/inspiration to pinochio become obvious
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
- monstro = the fighting fish

well seen for monstro too, complitely forgot that whale had such a name

You know how Oda has picked up a lot of things from "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" movie, like the design of the tenryuubito etc.(http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=35069)
Well, I don't know if It was said already but I just found this: Robin Williams played the King of the Moon. But the credits of the movie list "Ray D. Tutto".
This is the English transliteration of the Italian phrase "Re' di Tutto", which means "King of Everything", which was how the King of the Moon introduces himself to the Baron.
Mabe that name was inspiration for the will of D.?
I'm not saying It has any meaning to It, but this might have given Oda the idea to use the D. initial as a middle name.
Mabe even inspiration for the "Gol D. Roger" = King of the Pirates (vs. "Ray D. Tutto" = King of the Moon).
I don't really think it's an inspiration but I want to contribute to this thread.
In June 2006 Sanji uses Diable Jambe for the first time. It's reminiscent of a scene from Ong Bak from 2003.
!
Good movie btw.

Wasn't oda's original intention to name blackbeard Everything D. Teach?

Hmm, interesting!
Aparently this was mentioned in the green databook part 5.
Makes It even more plausible Oda used this as inspiration.

Yup very interesting! Especially in contrast to one of my old posts and his child drawing.
Personally I think you're right in a way since his body became darkness - which he claims is infinite gravity and reduces anything into "nothingness". The definition could also mean void/vacuum/non-existence which makes sense in what Blackbeard has done with his power. In the case of having two, possibly more Devil Fruits - it could be that he uses the power to draw in(gravity), stores into an empty space(vacuum), drain/nullify(void) the power/restriction of the "Devils", return the fruit into non-existence and into the darkness that he became.
Of course that's all just theories.
While Oda may not have been inspired by this, I think that it is pretty cool nonetheless:
Although at the end, the guy thinks that the weapon was inspired by a rhinocerous beetle.
Oda must've been inspired by pinocchio when he drew usopp or what do u guys say? It's all about the nose

Well, Kaku is more Pinocchio than Usopp.
But the part where Usopp tell lies may have something to do here.
^ Great find on the lightning.
and because of this, I stumbled upon Volcanic Lightning which makes me a bit too wishful…
I'm currently watching Kill La Kill and in episode 19 there is a scene with thread-using villainess Ragyo Kiriun that's going to be reeaally familiar to anyone reading recent episodes of the OP manga.
As KLK seems to have been released first could this have been Oda playing around as a tribute or something?
I haven't read Kill la Kill, but I doubt it. It's not like Ace is a tribute to all earlier cases of fire using superhumans…

No, but the sudden decapitation and recovery of a Big Bad villainess who uses threads to battle and control people… slightly less generic.
Don't know if it has been mentioned or not but Lucky Roo is Yattaran from Captain Harlock
Today's episode made me think of peter pan when I saw Luffy. Don't u think luffy could be a combination of son goku and peter pan? I mean not only because of their looks, they do have similar personalities too like for example the fact that both luffy and peter pan act like a child and son goku eats as much as luffy and also gets hungry easily ? Besides, Akira Toriyama was ( or still is ) oda's favorite mangaka (:

(Reposting this here. Similarities are obvious, both appearance and behaviour.)
Also, there are alot of similarities between Big Mom and the Witch in Hansel and Gretzel. Cake house, Cake Island, cannibalism etc.
Great find there DollarScholar, what's that film where Sabo's costume is based on? Oh yea yellow submarine really resembles law's submarine

I highly doubt so, Doflammingo's abilities where very well defined YEARS before the coming of Kill La Kill.

Its from Oliver Twist, the character is the Artful Dodger, a skilled pickpocket and member of a group young theifs. kiiinda like Sabo :)
What japanese story is the inspiration for the power to create beings out of a drawing? I have read several stories with that archetype, but I'd like to know if there is a folk ancient story about it.
Don't know if this inspired Oda, but if it didn't it's really a huge coincidence:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shichirigahama#Nichiren_in_Shichirigahama
Nichiren Buddhism was born in Kamakura, and the city is rich in places tied to both Nichiren and his life. Several of them are in Shichirigahama. This is because one of the shogunate's execution grounds was in Katase near Fujisawa in the spot where now Ryūkō-ji is, so, when Nichiren was condemned to death, he had to be brought there. Nichiren had been condemned for having written his Risshō Ankoku Ron, judged to be subversive by authorities.[9] A miracle however saved him, because when he was about to be beheaded (an event known to Nichiren's followers as the Tatsunokuchi Persecution (龍ノ口法難?)), lightning struck his executioner.[10] Nichiren was ultimately pardoned and an order was sent to Katase to stop the execution.
Reminds me of Luffy being saved by Dragon in Loguetown.

Good catch !
Eggman from the Sonic series has inspired 2 characters from OP.
After watching the movie Castle in the Sky i found two things:
1. Weatheria is inspired by Laputa from Gulliver's Travels : (with Oda's take obviously)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laputa
2. Skypiea and Birka could be inspire by some themes of the Laputa from the movie Castle in the Sky. (which is a fun watch )
In the movie, Laputa is an abandon, highly technological, civilization in the sky with only a few robots left to protect it and especially the environment of it. Also, Laputa in the movie can be activated and contains a weapon of terrifying power.
So the parallels can be seen, that in Skypiea there is high tech (or at least way different), remains of an ancient civilization of high technology and knowledge, Shandora was being tried to be protected, in the moon Birka the ancient city can be activated.

That's a really good find. :o
I knew Dagma looked familiar.
With Kate Bush being back in the news suddenly reminded how much the story of Chopper and Dr Hikkiluk reminds me of the video for Cloudbudting. The clip is from the point of view of Peter Reich. His William Reich, widely regarded as a quack for his research into healing orgone and how his being eventually taken away by the government devestated the son. It ends with Peter triumphantly using his fathers invention to create clouds.
I wonder if this served as the inspiration for parts of the story.

Can't say that this is definitively it, but there are a few similarities.

Oda has said that Sanji was inspired by Steve Buscemis character in Reservoir Dogs. Is it the "Proffesional attitude" wich Mr Pink maintains that inspired Sanjis "Violent yet pragmatic/strategic" mindset, or what is he getting at?

I feel like Sanji was more inspired in a general sense by the movie's costume design of cool dudes in suits walking around.
Mr Pink is mostly just a super neurotic wormy guy. Which doesn't describe Sanji at all.

Very unlikely, but it would be really cool if it was inspired from that song.
I saw a movie called
recently. It said in this movie that the art of the sword is really close to the art of writing. To the point that the protagonist decided to observe how his target writes to understand his style. It reminded of Kanjuro.Obviously the concept wasn't invented in this movie. And there is an other reference to it in the cover of chapter 481.
so i saw this video on youtube and at the 2:11 minute i saw "oda's inspiration" for gold roger speech. interesting.
Killer is inspired by Daft Punk obviously.
Killer's helmet has been noted to bare resemblance to the French musician Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo's helmet from Daft Punk. Daft Punk was made famous in Japan by their animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, during this time the duo were wearing outfits made up to make them look like robots.
Killer is IMO obviously based on a HellBoy-Villain, that 100yrs-old nazi with the mask (from the 1st movie). Let alone he had those spinning blades when he fought Hellboy and killed his "dad". So glad I was right bout Diamante based on Steven Tyler. Trebol is based on ZZ Top (beard and sunglasses) and Pica is based on Glenn Danzig (muscles and long hair) IMO. PH is based on iceland. Volcanos and glaciers are walking hand in hand there.
Learning about the Renaissance in history today; me and my friend had a good laugh about this

Iceland is a couple glaciers and mostly just bleak wastelands, and yeah some hot springs stuff.
But hellish firescapes no.

I know it might not be important, but "Trafalgar" is also based on the Battle of Tralfagar as well. Just wanted to add that because it was interested that he named Law after two battles.
That's called a tribute.

So that would make Doflamingo Napoleon? interesting. also, note that Napoleon wasn't actually short, he was just always surrounded by a guard that "dwarfed" him… a la the WG?
