Harrison Ford is mumbling less in that… Makes me more hopeful for Star Wars Episode VII
Late Night Talk Shows
-
-
I would most definitely be okay with Oliver taking over full time. He's been brilliant so far.
-
Its weird. because the writers are the same, John Oliver is basically delivering the exact same show as Stewart. Same timing, same kinds of jokes, even the same sort of delivery in some cases. There's differences obviously, but the similarities are kinda weird.
-
Last night's Colbert Report was great.
-
Given the bullshit that went down last night in the Texas senate… the talk shows should be amazing tonight. Daily Show I'm particularly looking forward to.
-
If you still haven't seen the amazing "Get Lucky" music video Stephen threw together in response to Daft Punk cancelling on him, here it is, in all its amazing glory.
It also continues to confirm that Bryan Cranston is the greatest person to ever live.
-
Colbert had a threatdown last night where the number one WASN'T Bears! Has that…ever happened before. It feels wrong.

Late Night with Bassem Youssef

Yeah, more than a few times. They don't always go for the bears joke. Just usually.

He's a peacock you're gotta let him fly.

Welp, it's happening. I'm surprised he didn't choose a show with Comedy Central like Colbert did. Will definitely be following his show, whatever it is.
Edit: Shit, didn't realize the post before mine was on the same thing. Fail.
-
Thats a shame, but… Oliver has been on the Daily Show for 8 years. He'll be missed, he's the best regular correspondant by far, and I think he took the job more seriously than Stewart when he hosted it over the summer.
Did comedy central actually offer him a show first? If they did I could see there being a tough choice, but if they didn't, (and hard to imagine them wanting a THIRD show of that sort taking up a 90 minute block every night...) then... no choice at all really between running your own show or being a perpetual second banana. Still, he's talented and I'm sure he'll do well alongside Bill Maher.
-
"But most of all, I'd like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it's entirely his fault." LOL
sniffle I'm gonna miss him. What will we do without him when the next World Cup comes along!?

:sad::sad::sad:

Enjoy the new show Jimmy. You have eight months till Leno wants it back.
-
That was amazing. And I'm hope that Fallon does great with the Tonight Show. I can't wait for Late Night with Seth Myers. Since I really enjoy his run of Weekend Update on SNL.
-
Fallon is already on a good start in my opinion. And its nice that the Roots are still being the band for Fallon. The set for the show is really nice.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Wow...
! Mike Tyson, Seth Rogan, Tracy Morgan, and Colbert giving money to Fallon. This segment was gold.
-
Im a foreigner so i dont know if my opinion counts, but Letterman will always be the king of Talk show hosts for me (not counting colbert/stewart). He is such an amazing interviewer with a very sharp wit. Leno was never suited for the job in the first place, that guy just reads shallow "SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH STEPHEN SPIELBERG HUH THAT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING RRIGHT?!"-questions from a sheet without even looking the guest in the eye.
Conan is insanely talented (imo he has written some of the best simpsons episodes of all time) but i couldnt really get into him as a talk show host. He plays the "Obnoxious Deadpan" card too often and he has the habit of looking into the camera while telling a joke during an interview way too much. Plus, whats up with his sofa-sidekick? never seen that guy really contribute much.
I have seen this "Lopez" guys show once or twice too and it made me feel embarrased for the human race.
-
-
Thank you Jimmy Kimmel for giving Joseph Gordon-Levitt another chance to be awesome:
-
David Letteman is retireing next year.
-
Not terribly surprising. He's been doing it a long time, and hes outlasted Leno now and will hold the record for longest running talkshow host, having passed Carson… and everything is shaking up. Time for new-ish blood to deal with new-ish blood.
I suppose this means Craig Ferguson will be moving up. Both good and bad, I'll be awake to see him, and he might do well with a band to play off of... but he also might suffer under a bigger budget, more scripted more important show. He's probably better as the nutball they let do whatever at midnight that makes up his monologues and interview questions on the spot. (He's my fave of the current crop by far.)
Gotta wonder about Conan though. His current TBS contract goes through to November 2015...?
-
I don't see Conan leaving TBS, he has a good thing going over there and pretty much has control for what airs on the network. Also, apparently Stephen Colbert may be the one getting the Late Show.
-
I don't know that Colbert would work outside of the character he plays at this point, and really needs the synergy of being the counter balance to the Daily Show. I have a hard time imagining him doing well in a different place.
Stewart has basically said he's super happy at CC and basically isn't leaving until he retires… but I can't figure out who they would give the follow up spot to... especially now that John Oliver has moved on.
In both cases they're heavily branded, a huge part of the network identity, get a loyal audience of a good demographic, great guests and clout, book deals... going to a major network would get them slightly higher viewerships... but the money wouldn't be much better and the creative control would surely be less. Stewart and Colbert are both probably best off where they are.
-
Colbert and Stewart work off great off each other because of their diametrically opposed styles (one is wacky and over the top, the other more grounded) and they complement each other well. Can't see CC let either of them leave on pain of death.
On another note, is it just my internet or has the official website just sucked since the redesign? Like the videos keep stopping every minute unless you click on the play bar. It's degraded to the point that I have to torrent the episodes instead of watching them legally on their site. And I put up with their crappy commercials for a year because I wanted to support them but now it's gotten to be too much with these streaming issues.
-
The comedy central site has ALWAYS sucked for playing videos… it wouldn't surprise me if its actually even worse now if they've redisigned it for even newer interfaces.
-
While it hasn't been the best, I've also noticed a sharp decrease in playback quality akin to what TLC's mentioned, but not due to the new interface. I've actually noticed the problems a few months back and thought, "Gee my dorm internet sucking hard on the colbert site or something?" Because every other video player didn't have the problem of just flat out stopping when it reached the end of the buffer.
-
I can't see them forcing Colbert to take a job he doesn't want but if he wants to go, there's not a whole lot Comedy Central can do about it.
-
Well, is it official now? Is Colbert replacing Dave?
Does that mean Craig Ferguson will just stay in the late night slot? (His humor is best there, but I would like him to get a budget.)
Wonder what Comedy Central is going to do to fill that gap, especially since Jon Oliver, the only reasonable replacement to get his own show, now has one on HBO.
-
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Colbert can't leave The Colbert Report!!
-
Sad to see the Report go, but i'm ok with this. Colbert should be great in this new role, and it gives him the chance for people to seem him in a new light. All the best I say.
-
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Colbert can't leave The Colbert Report!!
Wel, he'll have been playing the role (and it IS a role) for almost 10 years by the time he leaves it.
It's possible someone else could step in to play the same part-ish? Just… no idea who. Really, John Oliver was the best choice by a mile. I wonder if he might have stayed if he'd known this was going to open up? COurse, that's still two years away and he's getting his own HBO show now, so...
-
Yep, five year deal.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/stephen-colbert-replaces-david-letterman
-
Good for Colbert, that's a surprise. Craig, on the other hand, gets $5 million for being passed up
-
Apparently Craig likes his late night slot and says (publicly at least) that he never wanted the earlier slot. Which makes sense, he'd have to change his material quite a bit… and where he is right now he's basically left alone to do whatever he wants, censors don't pay attention.
He'd never be able to have a robot skeleton sidekick or a costumed horse in the earlier slot, or swear as much as he does.
He feels more right in the late slot.
-
For fucking real? Colbert's persona is one of the funniest characters I've ever had the pleasure of watching. And he's just gonna retire the character? Ugh. If he could at least take the character with him to the Late show but it'd probably be in his contract that he'd have to play it straight :/
-
Again, he HAS been playing the character for 10 years now. (longer if you count the stint on the daily show). And considering the character happens to have his name and some of his hobbies and is very easy to mistake for the actual man… I wouldn't be surprised if he's getting just a little tired of it by this point and ready to branch out and do other things. That's a VERY long time to play a role... especially four days a week all year long.
-

I agree with this Rob. I think that after all that time he wants to break away and re-establish himself as a talk show host. Late Night gives him that chance, but I do think he is not going to do a completely 100% drop of his persona, at least a first. It would be smart to do a slow transition, anything more could risk alienating the fans that CBS are probably praying follow him to Late Night.
-
I for one am hoping in Colbert's final show his "character" gets mauled by a bear and he has to use his Captain America shield to kill the bear before dying himself.

Ten years for you, I've only been following Colbert for a couple of years (and yes I could go back through the decade I missed but let's face it, Colbert's appeal is on topical humor and being a non-American, the old stuff would fly over my head, I'm up-to-date with current stuff now sure with twitter and checking the latest news as well as the daily show and colbert report but like I'm gonna laugh at random McCain joke that I have no way of knowing the context of short of heavy research). Ugh, I wish he could have been stuck around at least for the 2016 elections.
-
I'm pretty sure he'll be covering the 2016 elections in his new show as well.
A lot of him IS in the character, we'll see how it goes.

They could just move @Midnight up 30 minutes and change the name of the show..

Final episode: Colbert finally confronts the bear menace that has plagued America for so long. Going out in a blaze of glory as he puts grenade in a random bear cave.
-
My roommate is super sad that Ellen didn't get the spot. Yet another chance for a female Late Night talk show host missed.
-
Ellen's almost certainly better off where she currently is though. Her numbers aren't all that far off from where the late night shows are already and she's under no pressure to perform.
-
Does this mean all the Colbert Report Episodes will disappear from the CC website?? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
-
My roommate is super sad that Ellen didn't get the spot. Yet another chance for a female Late Night talk show host missed.
Ellen clearly didn't want to be the host considering two days ago she spoofed Letterman's monologue and then ended it by saying that while she liked being thought of as someone who would fill the spot she was fine where she is.
-
Looks like the Late Night switches aren't done yet. Apparently Letterman was one of the only people CBS still wanting him there and that CBS may not renew his contract next year…and did someone say they want female host in Late Night? Because apparently Chelsea Handler is in line to replace Feguson: http://t.co/0yoUL1O6ay

Oh CBS…they are going to get rid of the funniest person on late night now? I really feel bad for Ferguson now. TO me he's the funniest guy on late night because he looks like he is truly having fun every show, shoots off the cuff every night and doesn't give a tootsie pop what anyone else thinks about it.
-
That'd be a real shame, Craig always makes me laugh whenever I watch. Since his and Letterman's contracts are expiring at around the same time I guess it would make sense if he also got replaced
