@Zar:
Looking back Dressrosa was the low point for the women (both in terms of design and treatment) so it doesn't surprise me this thread was created during that arc. I'm really happy Oda improved since then, right now I'm at least content with how things are and I can overlook what I don't like.
As much as I admire Oda for generally being able to balance out character focus in big arcs, if I had to point to the arc where I felt he had the most trouble, then it would be Dressrosa, so any problems with proper focus Oda had with female characters to begin with potentially showed more here.
While I do recognize the strengths of some female characters introduced for that arc like Baby 5 and Giolla, a lot of the others feel more sidelined whether it be a princess, dwarf, or a character meant to serve for someone else’s backstory like Russian. Even the main character of Robin felt more sidelined with how she ended up having to defend Rebecca while Kyros did the fighting against Diamanté, as professional as Robin was in dealing with the situation in the first place.
There was the Beast Pirates character of Ginrummy, who was introduced in Chapter 795, so she might have potentially helped improve the lacking female character focus had she actually showed up at Dressrosa, but oh well. It’s probably why characters like Tsuru, Shinobu, and Ulti stood out to me at Wano, because they felt like they came more to the forefront whether through personality or capability and I enjoyed that.
