Artwork looks kinda eh, but the bit with Law and Vergo looks like it was key animated at least.
They're still just going to tween the mountain.

I don't mind #617 looking crappy, it was a boring chapter anyway with a bad cliffhanger that I hope the anime team will fix by adding few pages from the beginning of chap #692.
I can't tell who is the AD, All the shots of Luffy look completely different and inconsistent.
At 0:21 , Vergo looks normal or is it just me? Looks like some sort of filler.
I really hope Otsuka directs one more episode, #616. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Edit: And I was hoping we would see some cool Mecha action soon by Tomita…
Here's 616's:
Thanks, looks great. Again, I have no freaking idea who might be the AD.
There seems to be some good Key Animation in the Smoker Vs Vergo battle. The bolder black lines reminds me of Hiromi Ishigami.
Ishigami coming back would be baller.
I noticed that the shot of Vergo reinforcing his arm had the same red-flash effect that it did back in 607 during his clash with Sanji. I wonder if it's the same animator? (the second half of the fight was Hisada, but that brief shot looked different)

Yeah, look at the part when smoker is bouncing off the ground. Still, there is no strong evidence that this might be Ishigami.
They look very different to me. And I think you meant #607.
Isochi did a great job it 616, i like his style in drawing luffy
It will be great if he become one of one piece's ADs
616 looks very nice. Looking forward to it.
And I think you meant #607.
I was gonna say…any of the lead animators from 606 shouldn't be animating more than talking heads.
Now 607, that would be nice.
Yeah I meant 607.
So 616 have full of chapter 690?

aha, 616's preview look great because Takashi Otsuka bring good animators with him
XMURADX can rest easy. His wish for 616 came true.
Another new guy huh? Looking at ANN he seems to be affiliated with a studio called Mushi Productions and has been an animation director on a few movies (one of which being Kochikame) as well as the Black and White Pokemon season and the current season of the Bakemonogatari franchise. Other key animation credits are Saint Seiya Omega, the new Hunter x Hunter, and Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Looks promising, we'll see.
EDIT: Ueda? Never mind, cut expectations in half.
Thanks Archah, What an awesome list!
#616 already looks great, add to that Otsuka is directing it, I'm expecting it to be the best ep in the arc.
#617, it was a terrible chapter, nothing interesting, & with a bad cliffhanger. So giving it to Deguchi was the right choice. Too bad, Masahiro Hosoda is directing it. I feel like Toei is punishing this guy.
#618, Masahiro Kitazaki got promoted to Animation Director in One Piece, I always believed he had potential. Ueda directing it, kills the hype a bit.
#619, this should be an awesome episode. Ide/Aya team was great last time, can't wait!
And finally the icing on the cake, the great Nakatani for #620, I believe this is an important ep as well, should be exciting to watch. Ayako as director is fine.
Normally by the end of the arc, I just lose hope. But Toei did not disappoint, so far. We could use more sakuga, though.
^^^
I hope that Rie Matsumoto will donate to one piece one of kyousogiga staff :P
Takagi mixed with Ootsuka? That's some haphazard planning there, unless Takagi's key animators all wind up being so good he doesn't need to correct them.
@Yuugi's:

#521…You know how that turned out. Pretty sure Takagi didn't even correct Kuroyanagi, Hayashi, and Ootsuka.

Keep dreaming buddy…
XMURADX Do you know if Masahiro Kitazaki is any good?
XMURADX Do you know if Masahiro Kitazaki is any good?
I can't say for sure, but I've always thought he was responsible for some cool scenes. But I could not confirm it, I guess we will know soon, but I believe he is good.
Honestly, I understand why they would start from Punk Hazard. IMO, the arc has been consistent artwise, with less ugly episodes compared to the other arcs.
Good Animation Directors in PH:
Yukiko Nakatani
Kazuya Hisada
Shigefumi Shingaki
Yusuke Isochi
Katsumi Ishizuka
Atsuko Kawamura
Takeo Ide
Megumi Yamashita
The arc is lacking Sakuga wise.

Yeah that's true. I believe that it's probably because Punk Hazard wasn't an action type arc so the good AD's weren't given much to work with. The Dressrosa arc will most likely have more since it's an action based arc so there's a lot to work with. It's also because of the specials. I really hope that Toei stops making them. They should at least not do one for a long while. That's where all the best animators for the series keep going. If they won't fix the pacing, they should give us more eye candy to look at, at the very least.
The Key Animation list for #616 is long, it will be harder than usual to figure out who did what…There is a lot of cool scenes here.
At least we know Katsumi Ishizuka's scene, it was the best part of the episode. Wish if he could stop doing Animation Direction and continue doing more spectacular Key Animation.
!
This might come as a shock, but I believe the begining of Smoker vs. Vergo was Takagai. I know…Right? lol
Also, I can't confirm This but I think Shigeru Chiba might be responsible for the final smoker attack. Still, checking.
This episode continued the growing trend I've noticed of the characters' outlines being stylistically thicker in places. It used to be something that I only really noticed with Kawamura at times, but since the start of this arc I've been seeing it a lot more with different animation directors.

And would you say that's a good thing?
I like the look, so yes.

I've noticed that trend too, and not just in One Piece. Perhaps the current TV standard of HD has something to do with it? Although I think it's just generally growing in popularity among artists and animators.
Thicker lines is something modern anime needs more.
I glanced at 616 yesterday, to see where the anime is up to, and I was pretty surprised how dynamic the animation is compared to some of the crappy animation from years ago. This is good for Toei right? But then I saw Kyousougiga and now I KNOW Toei can do really good animation.
Interesting review on the new One Piece BR regarding the quality after Water Seven, similar to the opinions from users here.
Masahiro Kitazaki debut ep looks good as expected. I wonder if Satoshi Horisawa will work on #618, I think I noticed his style. Also, he usually works with Kitazaki in the same episodes.
And it's cool to have Shida again. So, I'm hoping the scene will be in #624.
Shuichi Ito is improving a lot…Now he handles main stuff, I noticed that he is more active in Punk Hazard.
I liked his scene here, but I believe if the storyboard was good, the scene would have looked much cooler.
I edited the scene into a gif, I prefer if it was executed this way.
!
So Toei is doing an Avengers series. If Tomita returns to Toei it might be for Iron Man cuts.
@Galaxy:
Preview did not disappoint. Looking forward to this.
Seems like some good Sakuga are involved.
Both 618 and 619 look good, looking forward to them.
Upcoming episodes are going to be great :)
Feels so good to see a bright blue sky again.
As expected, Horisawa does have some sort of a connection with Kitazaki. His scene was good, I think it was the Shogun's entrance.
Edit: Confirmed by Horisawa, also he did the previous cut as well.
!
BTW, Some people say this is Shingo Fujii scene from #616. He is a great animator, I feel ashamed that I didn't recognize his name. I tried my luck and asked him, hopefully he will give me an answer soon.
!
Edit 2: Fuji confirmed this scene as well.
A MAD for Shingo Fujii…These talented animators does better job on other shows, I don't know if it's due to limitations or deadline issues.
^^
Takashi Otsuka did a great job by bring him to work in that episode. Otsuka care about sakuga as usual
====
One piece #618
good art but with laggy animation in some cuts.
One Piece is getting more cool freelancers, now it's Shin Matsuo. While this is not confirmed to be his work, there is no other animator that I think could have done this other than him.
!
Did the backgrounds became brighter with a higher contrast in last episodes? or it's my imagination?!

Maybe they did? Could be the stream you're watching. The new Crunchyroll stream is in HD and it's much more vibrant than what Funimation's has ever been.
Maybe Matsuo's appearance is due to his working on a here-to-unannounced new special?

Could be, but him doing someone a favor is more likely.

Yeah, sometimes when people talk about colors i have the feeling they were watching the awfully washed-out funi stream. CR's 1080p looks beautiful.
Also, it's been a while since we've seen a bright blue sky.
Ueda direct DD precure#41 , hopefully he will not showing up in one piece in November and December
sorry for bad grammer
