Oh silly BatDan. It was Shueisha and Oda that told Viz it was Chambres and that is why it was used. Originally Viz did use Shambles. That is why it was changed.

That… doesn't make a lick of sense.
In English, a "Chambre" is just and old way of spelling Chamber.
In French, it means bedroom.Just because Law's main attack is "Room", doesn't mean that he's referring to a French bedroom. In fact, first time he used Shambles, the intent was clear as he mixed up the body of the Marines in his Room. God damn it Viz!
ha, yeah. Which word best describes this scene?
chambre: a room for sleeping; bedroom; or
shamble: any scene, place, or thing in disorder
*plus in Ch 660, he already created the 'Room' so there was no need to go all Sanji and say 'Room' again in French.
It creates a thematic connection between Law's moves, the same way that pretty much every character has a theme running through their naming choices.
Do we know any sells statistic for the first week release? I know we usually have them.

It still doesn't make sense since his other moves aren't named after rooms, and the body parts are in shambles.

Is anybody else in the Toronto area having a hard time finding volume 67 in stores? Even after nearly 2 weeks most of the stores in 'the' big chain aren't carrying the title. Guess I'll have to suck it up and order online. :x

From back when I bought english volumes for lots of series and hung on the release dates, it was pretty normal for them to show up late in book stores about a month after the release date, give or take a few weeks. I mean I'm not around Toronto (well I'm closeish but American lol), but I doubt the processes are much different between where we are. Same publisher after all.
What are the big huge bookstores in Canada? Down here we have Barnes and Noble and the rare occasional Bookamillion (used to have Borders and Waldenbooks but they went under to Barnes).
And I recall them all playing by the same basic setup.

Here in Ontario we only have one major company that owns the three chains (Chapters, Indigo, and Coles). In the past these stores have always had stock of the new volumes in a timely manner, so I'm not too sure what's up! In general, manga here isn't popular enough for smaller, independent book stores to carry many new releases.
Getting a bit more on-topic - I'm not too sure if the weekly sales data some of you keep track of includes Canadian transactions, but I thought I'd bring up this stock anomaly. Maybe this delay is happening in some American stores too. Who knows?
I hope i win sweepstakes !
So, I know it's a bit late, but I'm just reading Viz' Volume 66, and it's great. I found it great how Baron Tamago's speech was translated with the random bits of French in there. It was hilarious, and I loved it cause I'm a speaker of French myself. I don't know if it's been mentioned or pointed out already, but one part of it really got to me though.
Before Big Mom calls, he says "Mama does je t'aime her sweets most dearly," of course trying to say how she loves her candy. But it's just awkward, cause literally he said "Mama does I love you her sweets most dearly." Even to a starting French student, that'd look awkward. Other than all that, It was really nicely done.
just got 67, love it… also love the more mature language. wonder if they'll include some of the worse swears...

Are they finally swearing again? Thank god.
I mean I'm not some dumb teen anymore who thinks swearing is cooollll or whatever.
But what definitely isn't cool is angry dramatic exclamations with words like "darn" or "jerk" lol. Like Luffy furiously rushing at Mihawk when he thinks Zoro was killed by saying "DARN YOUUU". It's horribly funny lol.
Also! Yo! You're from Connecticut too! What bookstore and town did you find 67 in! Were there more! (please don't say online order :<)
You can pinpoint the chapter where stephen started translating by the enemy mooks' rougher speech patterns higher rate of breezy language by others.
at monkey king, yea unfortunately i did get it oline, but took nearly two weeks, perhaps theres more people buying it now…
Am I the only one who misses the pirate talk of earlier volumes? I reread some of the earlier arcs, and characters like Buggy, Kuro, and Krieg had great pirate accents. That would've worked perfectly with Blackbeard and Crocodile for instance. Honestly, with viz volumes, I don't care too much about complete accuracy, if the text is changed slightly to be more entertaining to read.

No that was awful. And only showed up midway through the Buggy arc.
And hollly crap would that have been horrible on Crocodile. What are you thinking??
im almost positive that some pirate lingo slipped once from blackbeard in the impel down volumes.

No.

Hell no.

Fuck no.
A million times no.
Go away.
Question: How come the Dwarves are called "Little People" when back in Sabaody the auction sheet called them the Dwarf Tribe?
We liked "Little People" more upon actually seeing them. Dwarves are too tainted by LOTR/Hobbit at this point.

Even though soooo many other works of fiction use Dwaves as a species, like Warhammer, Warcraft, D&D…
Most dwarves in fiction are carbon copies of the Tolkien's, though.
Exactly. All those dwarves you listed are burly, stumpy bearded guys swinging around giant axes and hammers and shit. It doesn't really add up to the image that Oda is using.
Also, in case this hasn't been mentioned before, Oda doesn't use the term ドワーフ (dowafu or "dwarf"), he uses the word 小人 (kobito or "little person") which has a number of different analogues in English, such as little person, pixie, dwarf, gnome, fairy, etc. So by not using "dwarf," we're not directly ignoring something Oda put in there, we're just using an alternative to a prior translation choice, which was made without proper context long ago.
Fine… well why not Gnomes? Gancho kind of looks like a Gnome. "Little People" just sounds too PC for the wrong reasons.
Now I think you're just complaining for the sake of it.
Now I think you're just complaining for the sake of it.
grumble grumble Sometimes I just need to vent about stupid things…
Yes it's petty, but there's worse things I could be petty over. Like refusing to play a great game because the artstyle offends you. Or refusing to read One Piece because the art isn't "manga enough" (Yes this is a complaint I've seen).
By the way, when's that special edition with the fixed translations coming?
what special edition?
Even though soooo many other works of fiction use Dwaves as a species, like Warhammer, Warcraft, D&D…
Those are all copies of Tolkien dwarves lol.
Oda's going for something pretty obviously Borrowers/Lilliputian based.
@Monkey:

The actual word "dwarves" is itself a reference to Tolkien; dwarfs was the standard spelling before he used dwarves. He even had an overzealous editor "correct" it in the first edition of The Hobbit. According to Tolkien, it should really be something along the lines of dwarrow and dwarves is actually grammatically incorrect (though less so than dwarfs) but it makes sense in light of elf changing to elves.

I still think of the Littl' Bits when I look at his gnomes.
what special edition?
Alexis Kirsch mentioned a special edition that would fix a lot of the translations,

He meant it purely hypothetically, there's no current plans for one. Might as well wait for the Naruto or Bleach VizBigs before getting your hopes up for One Piece's.

@Monkey:
Because when I think of PC, I think 1959.
that's kind of exactly what I thought of. banshees be terrifying little kids
Not complaining, just letting you know that if you do decide to go back and edit the word "Dwarves" on the auction house list, don't forget to also edit Noland's flashback in volume 31. He tells a story about dwarves to a group of kids.
It would be nice to have a special edition some day with more consistent dialogue throughout the entire series.
I think "Little Folk" or "Small Folk" might have been a better fit.

It would be even nicer to not autistically interpret the series in some machine like way where somehow a guy telling fairy tales to kids has to align itself precisely with some other thing from later that probably has nothing to do with it.
Why not 'Vertically Special People'?
A Special Edition translated only by Stephen with all names spelled exactly how we want them to be. The things that could be accomplished if time and money were not a factor for Viz or their customers. May the dreams of man never die.

What makes you think all fans know what the hell they're even talking about in regards to translation.

Chill out. I already said it wasn't a complaint.
Noland had visited the city of gold, which was more than a myth. I assume the same is true of the dwarves or little people. I assume they're one in the same. Oda drops little hints of later things earlier in the story in many ways (ex. the Sun Pirates tattoo).
All I said was that it would be nice to have special editions with consistent dialogue (Zoro, Loguetown, etc.) I think Steven is doing a good job and would like to see him edit the earlier volumes. If you for some strange reason would not like to see this, then hey whatever floats your boat. No reason to attack someone for hoping for a special edition. I already bought all 67 volumes. Not sure what more I can do to support the series and prove myself a good One Piece fan who doesn't care about minor translation variations.
Myths and consistency?
Different cultures have like a hundred names for similar stories and phenomena.
If it's world building you're worried about, then your suggestion makes OP seem actually much smaller.
@Monkey:

Most don't and I really don't either. What I do know is the Viz staff themselves have made fun of the overuse of "pirate lingo" in the early volumes. Some of it's pretty cheesy. As far as names are concerned, that's just a joke about Zolo.
Personally I don't care. I own all the volumes and will continue to buy them. I wouldn't go back and purchase a Special Edition and I wouldn't expect Viz to make one, thus the phrase "if time and money were not a factor."

Again, why do you feel the need to be so argumentative over something so ridiculously minor? I just assumed that Oda was referencing the same people because he's been known to do that sort of thing. If you don't agree, whatever, that's fine, but your posts are quite rude. Please just chill out and stop acting like the One piece authority. You're not. I'm not "making the world small" or "reading One Piece like a machine / autistic child." I was simply offering a suggestion to Stephen for the possible eventuality of a special edition.
You guys, can't we all just be nakama?
So, about those VizBig Volumes - the first one is supposed to come out in September or something, but I made some calculations and I think by buying the Omnibus volumes you can come off cheaper…
And if there's any chance of a revised edition, I'm all for it. Well, I mean, it's not that hard to ignore "Zolo", but still :D
I just wonder when I can call all of the volumes my own xD My plan is to start buying the new volumes and then to buy the old ones either in Omnibus or VizBig volumes....
One Piece vol. 67 jumped up to 1st on New York Times Best Seller List for its 3rd week on the list. http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/2013-07-07/manga/list.html
Where did you hear about the One Piece Vizbig volumes? I couldn't find any listings for them. I'd be interested in buying a Vizbig edition, particularly if they change Zolo back to Zoro.

Might not be the same thing as a VizBig volume, but there are box sets coming out in November!
Doesn't say anything about translation changes, though!
How well does One Piece sell. I know it sells pretty well, and don't compare it to Naruto and Bleach. I just want to know if it sells moderetly well.
