@Monkey:
I've never been more embarassed at people in my country as when on my tour with Chrissie of the Congress building we saw that for one of the two statues of state heroes, Mississippi or someone had picked Jefferson Davis.
Well, fact is almost nobody outside America even knows the guy existed, so I don't think it's bad to give him a statue or two somewhere, as I don't exactly think he was the biggest piece of scum to have ever existed (given the founding father's rather positive opinion of slavery and whatnot) but I think that was quite an unfortunate choice.
A sidenote: The american civil war has to be one of the most ubiquitous subjects in history class, as I think we had it covered at at least 3 different levels during my schooldays, and yet while the name of General Lee was present in all of those study texts at least as a footnote, not one single mention was ever uttered in any officialy approved school curriculum about Jefferson Davis being the Confederate States President, or even any hint that the Confederate states had their own president at all. Seems a bit ironic. (Also made me not realise that fact until Wikipedia)
